Karen Chernick
- Design and Culture Editor
Much to the disappointment of her Moroccan grandmother, Karen became a vegetarian at the age of seven because of a heartfelt respect for other forms of life.
She also began her journey to understand her surroundings and her impact on the environment.
She even starting an elementary school Ecology Club and an environmental newsletter in the 3rd grade. (The proceeds of the newsletter went to non-profit environmental organizations, of course.) She now studies in New York.
Karen can be reached at karen (at) greenprophet (dot) com.
Tafline Laylin
- Managing Editor
As a tour leader who led “eco-friendly” camping trips throughout North America, Tafline soon realized that she was instead leaving behind a trail of gas fumes, plastic bottles and Pringles. In fact, wherever she traveled – whether it was Viet Nam or South Africa or England – it became clear how inefficiently the mandate to re-think our consumer culture is reaching the general public.
So she has picked up her mighty pen to bring better exposure to environmental issues. At other times, she waxes philosophical about culture and travel on her personal blog. Born in Iran, and raised in the United States, she is currently based in Cairo.
Tafline can be reached at tafline (at) greenprophet (dot) com.
Arwa Aburawa
- Eco-Islam Affairs Editor
Arwa is as Muslim freelance writer who is interested in everything climate change related and how Islam can inspire more people to care for their planet and take active steps to save it while we can.
She is endlessly suspicious of all politicians and their ceaseless meetings, especially as they make normal people believe that they are not part of the solution when they are the ONLY solution.
Her Indian auntie is her model eco-warrier, and when Arwa is not busy helping out in the neighborhood alleyway garden, swap shopping or attempting fusion vegetarian dishes- with mixed success, she’d like to add- she can be found sipping on foraged nettle tea. You can find all of Arwa’s published work on her freelance site, and check out her musing on her blog.
You can contact her via arwa (at) greenprophet.com
James Murray-White
- Books Editor
James grew up in a green village outside Cambridge, UK which gave him an eye into the natural world. Years later, after being an actor, dramatist, weary traveller and anthropologist, the environment fires him up the most – and he’s compelled to save and nurture it.
Based in the UK, James keeps busy with writing and filming projects. Growing things organically and composting profusely take up the remainder of his time.
James can be reached at james (at) greenprophet (dot) com.
Tinamarie Bernard
- Green Love Editor
Tinamarie combines her interests in two of her favorite topics – relationships and the environment – for Green Prophet. As our eco-sexpert, she explores ways to make our personal lives more sustainable, whether it’s between a couple, the sheets or our ears. While eco-sexuality is a new term and still unfamiliar to many, being conscious about what we use in moments of intimacy is connected to better stewardship of the planet.
In her spare time, she muses about sacred sexuality, conscious love, intimacy, feminism and parenting as the top-rated Modern Love column for Examiner.com and several other media outlets. She composes poetry (mostly in her heart), mediates (when time allows), rides horses, and searches for delicious parve dessert recipes. She considers chocolate a righteous sin, and won’t give up a single pair of red shoes.
You can find her on Facebook, follow her on twitter @ModernLoveMuse, or send her an email at tinamarie (at) greenprophet.com.

Rachel Bergstein
When her vegan summer camp counselor explained to a fifteen-year-old Rachel how the dairy industry pollutes the groundwater in poor rural communities and causes global warming, there was no turning back. Her green fire lit, Rachel became increasingly passionate about the relationship between human societies and the natural environment, particularly about the systemic injustices associated with environmental degradation. She currently works at Friends of the Earth Middle East.

Dr. Yosef Gotlieb
Dr. Yosef (Yossi) Gotlieb is a geographer specializing in society-nature relations, international development and global change. He was born in Costa Rica and raised in the United States.
During his doctoral studies, he proposed that development be directed toward geo-ethnic regions rather than in the confines of the post-colonial state. Kurdistan was his case study.
Among Dr. Gotlieb’s writings are Self-Determination in the Middle East (NY: Praeger, 1982) and Development, Environment and Global Dysfunction (Delray Beach, FL: St Lucie Press, 1996). He currently directs text and publishing studies at David Yellin College of Education, Beit HaKerem, Jerusalem.

Miriam Kresh

She owns too many cookbooks and is always planning the next meal.

Hannah Katsman
Hannah learned environmentalism from her mother, a conservationist before it was in style. Once a burglar tried to enter their home in Cincinnati after noticing the darkened windows (covered with blankets for insulation) and the snow-covered car in the driveway. Mom always set the thermostat for 62 degrees Fahrenheit (17 Celsius) — 3 degrees lower than recommended by President Nixon — because “the thermostat is in the dining room, but the stove’s pilot light keeps the kitchen warmer.”
Her mother would still have preferred today’s gas-saving pilotless stoves.
She has taught English but her passion is parental education and support, especially breastfeeding.Hannah can be reached at hannahk (at) greenprophet (dot) com.
Ira Moskowitz
When his kids were small, Ira would point to litter on the ground and tell them: “That makes me angry!” He still gets angry about pollution, waste and abusive treatment of our world, but is encouraged by the growing awareness of environmental issues and has been following the latest developments in cleantech with great interest.
To contact Ira, email ira (at) greenprophet (dot) com.

Degree. Following graduation, Maurice embarked on a career as a real estate broker before making the decision to make Aliyah to Israel.
After arriving in Israel in October 1974, and attending a language school to learn Hebrew, Maurice worked in a variety of occupations until starting his own insurance business in 1980.
