Sustainable design is popping up all over Israel, and we’ve tried to cover as many of these designers as possible.  Our survey of ten sustainable Israeli designers who reduce, reuse, and recycle covers tons of green, innovative, and aesthetic projects ranging from rubber tire handbags (that are surprisingly chic) to old suitcases-turned-shelving units.

So we were very happy to find out about a Sustainable Design Seminar starting at the Israeli Design Center in Holon next week, because that means that not only is the trend continuing, but it’s hitting the mainstream as well.

The five session seminar will be lead by Adital Ella and Yair Engel, both of whom are sustainable designers and experts in the field of sustainable design and industry.  The seminar, which will conduct one class per week beginning on Tuesday June 9, is intended for designers, students, and those interested in the field of sustainability.

The program of the seminar is as follows:

The Concept of Sustainable Design: An introductory lecture about the history, importance, and significance of sustainable design in a world of production and consumption.  The first session will also include an introduction to the concept of cradle to cradle.

Eco-Design – Tool Box for Sustainable Design: An introductory lecture about the concepts and leading strategies of eco-design.

New Materials and Renewable Materials: Screening of the recent film, Addicted to Plastic (see trailer above), and a lecture about considerations regarding choice of materials in green design.  Introduction to a wide range of materials appropriate for sustainable design.

Risks, Pressures, and Opportunities: Discussion of the status quo of global standards, and their relevance to the local market.  Packaging, print, and everything in between.

Sustainable Design in the Business World: Discussion of the growing trend of corporate social responsibility and how it effects corporate production systems.  Discussion of case studies of companies achieving greater success due to adopting an environmental approach.

The five seminar sessions will be held on Tuesday evenings (beginning June 9th) from 6:30pm – 9:30pm at the Mediatheque Auditorium, 6 Golda Meir Street, Holon.  For more information, call 03-5021555 or email [email protected].

Self-repairing contact lenses and desalination membranes that fix themselves?

Could the humble contact lens become a sustainability breakthrough? Researchers in Korea have developed a self-healing hydrogel lens that repairs scratches with just one hour of UV light exposure. Beyond reducing waste from disposable contacts, the technology could one day help extend the life of solar panels, water filtration systems, and other plastic-based products.

Make paper mache with flowers to create stunning vase

There’s something quietly beautiful about what Rebloom Studio is doing, and it starts with waste. At wholesale flower markets, mountains of unsold blooms are tossed out at the end of each cycle. Perfect flowers, just not sold in time. Most of them are burned or dumped. Rebloom takes that moment and turns it into something else.

Baby teeth read like tree rings paint a picture of toxins in early life

A new study from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York offers a striking insight into how the environments we are born into can quietly shape our brains years later. By analyzing naturally shed baby teeth, the ones tucked under pillows for the tooth fairy, researchers have reconstructed a detailed timeline of exposure to environmental metals during pregnancy and early infancy.

How to Effectively Promote Your Sustainability Progress

Before promoting sustainability progress, companies must ensure their initiatives are genuine and measurable. Today’s audiences are increasingly skeptical of vague environmental claims, particularly as awareness of “greenwashing” has grown.

Choosing Riyadh over Dubai? What Investors Should Know

Saudi Arabia is deploying capital at unmatched scale to catalyze tourism and advanced industry while rewiring its power-and-water backbone. The investable frontier is widening—especially in renewables, grid storage, water efficiency/desal retrofits, and hospitality operating platforms. Prudent investors will insist on phased delivery, enforceable KPIs (energy, water, biodiversity), and RHQ/zone compliance—while pricing political-economy and reputational risks alongside growth upside.

Big Box stores are a pretty new concept in Israel, and thank God that not every Israeli city wants them in their backyard. The Jewish National Fund Meets An Inconvenient Truth

According to the JNF, it has transformed thousands of acres of barren land into green forests in Israel. They state that each person emits about 23 tons of carbon per year, estimating that each tree planted can absorb one ton of carbon in its lifetime. That's a whole lot of trees you'd need to be planting. Could so many fit in Israel?
