5 hydrogen storage and energy breakthroughs

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. It is also a powerful zero-carbon fuel with an energy density of 5.5 kilowatt-hours per kilogram (kWh/kg). This is more than two and a half times the energy density of gasoline and eighteen times the energy density of the 0.296 kWh/kg 4680 battery used in the Tesla Model S.

Hydrogen is used for space travel and other specialized applications but it has not yet replaced fossil fuels in electricity generation, consumer or freight transportation. That may be about to change thanks to these breakthroughs in hydrogen technology.

1. Green Hydrogen

When hydrogen is burned in the presence of Oxygen, it doesn’t produce carbon dioxide (CO2) it only produces water (H2O) and small amounts of the chemicals produced by heating air. But the processes for generating hydrogen consumes energy and that energy can come from sources which produce CO2. Hydrogen is a colorless gas but engineers developed a nine color code to track environmental factors in the production of hydrogen. For example, when coal is used to produce hydrogen, it is known as Black or Brown hydrogen. Natural gas is used to produce Gray hydrogen with the steam-methane reformation process which released CO2 into the atmosphere. Burning black, brown or gray hydrogen appears to be carbon neutral but the overall process contributes to air pollution and climate change.

Blue hydrogen also uses natural gas (mostly methane) but the process is designed to capture and sequester the CO2 byproduct for storage or industrial purposes. 

Green hydrogen goes one step further by producing hydrogen from solar, wind and other energy technologies which do not contribute to climate change. 

Who is working with green hydrogen?

With abundant gas reserves and good climate for solar electrolysis, mideast countries are particularly well-placed for cost-effective green hydrogen production and job creation. Saudia Arabia’s NEOM development is working to produce the world’s largest green hydrogen production utility. 

Oman is also competing in this market with signed contracts for six green projects and a production target of more than one million tons of green hydrogen per year. The war in Ukraine has also forced the European Union to rethink energy dependency as part of regional defence and security. Hydrogen terminals and pipelines are being built and expanded to take advantage of imports from the Mideast and Canada. As Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau puts it: “The enhanced action plan on hydrogen will mobilize investment, support businesses, share expertise and get clean Canadian hydrogen to Europe… Fundamentally, it’s about good middle-class jobs, economic growth and clean energy.”

2. Hydrogen for mimicking photosynthesis

Photovoltaic (PV) electrolysis is not particularly efficient in using sunlight to extract hydrogen from water. The best PV cells are only about 15% efficient and electrolysis is only about 70% efficient. And when the panels are dusty, knock that down even more. Together their total efficiency is only about 10.5%.

Plants do much better but their process is complicated. Reading over my daughter’s shoulder while she was studying biology, I learned something about light-harvesting complex, dyads, ATP, antenna proteins. In my day it was simple, chlorophyll made plants green and turned sunlight, CO2 and water into vegetables our mom made us eat!

On a very high level, light is a form of electromagnetic energy like radio waves. For efficient capture of that energy we need antennas that are a small integer ratio to the wavelength. You may have noticed that the antenna in your 1980s mobile phone was shorter than the ones in your walkie talkie. CB and HAM radio buffs used to tune antenna lengths with a Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) meter. In the early days of television people did something similar with bits of aluminum foil wrapped around TV antennas.

But light has a very short wavelength. The sunlight that filters through our atmosphere has a wavelength of about 400-700 billionths of a meter (nanometer). Because this is a wide range of wavelengths, we need a range of different antenna sizes. Not to worry (says whoever invented photosynthesis) layers of different pigments capture different parts of the spectrum.

No one will ever know this little secret until autumn when the green chlorophyll fades and some of the the other colors are revealed. My explanation may be an oversimplification but our best PV solar cells are not nearly as complex or efficient as the photosynthesis in the broccoli mom made us eat. It’s like comparing a stone tool to the International Space Station. 

But we have to start somewhere and scientists at the University of Michigan took a step in the right direction by mimicking photosynthesis. They used a window-sized lens to focus sunlight onto a panel containing an indium gallium nitride nanostructure catalyst covered with water that was soon bubbling with hydrogen and oxygen gasses with an efficiency of 6.1% indoors and 9% outdoors. This doesn’t beat the efficiency of our best PV electrolysis systems, but it’s a start.

3. Geologic Hydrogen

We discussed this in a recent Green Prophet article about natural hydrogen. The idea is that instead of trying to find green energy to extract hydrogen from water, we search for deposits of hydrogen gas in the same way we search for fossil fuels. Geologic hydrogen is a hot topic in recent weeks because if we find large deposits of hydrogen, it really could be a game changer. At the very least it could serve as a transition fuel to help us phase out fossil fuels before their environmental damage overwhelms us.

4. Hydrogen Fusion

Two isotopes of hydrogen are used in the most common fusion reaction. These are Deuterium and Tritium. Chemically each of these behave very much like ordinary hydrogen which has one proton and one electron but Deuterium also has one neutron and Tritium has two neutrons. These isotopes are relatively rare but the energy released by a fusion reaction is hard to ignore. We already mentioned that the energy density of hydrogen when it is chemically burned in air is about 5.5 kilowatt-hours per kilogram.

But the nuclear fusion reaction between Deuterium and Tritium isotopes can produce 94 trillion kilowatt-hours per kilogram. This is 17 trillion times the energy density of gasoline. The catch is that fusion is difficult. Harnessing this energy isn’t as easy as dumping some rubbish into a device like “Mr. Fusion” in the film “Back to the Future.”

It’s even more difficult than trying to harness the energy in a bolt of lightning. But scientists are working on this from two different angles, magnetic confinement and laser confinement. Both have demonstrated net energy gain but not yet at a level that is commercially practical.

5. Hydrogen Airships

It must have seemed the perfect form of transportation. Dirigibles were luxurious and majestic. School teachers told us what it was like to watch these massive inventions cast shadows across midwestern cornfields. They took the comforts of a passenger cruise ship and sailed among the clouds. The Hindenberg even had a piano lounge.

No form of transportation is perfectly safe and these airships were no exception. Seventy-three people died when the USS Akron crashed into the ocean and 48 died on the R-101. But the Hindenberg exploded on land in daylight with thousands of spectators, photographers and NBC radio broadcaster Herbert Morrison whose famous words “Oh the humanity!” would signal the end of this airship era..

This too may change as we face the true costs of jet aircraft travel. A round-trip transatlantic flight releases about two tons of CO2 per passenger, comparable to the annual carbon footprint of an average person living in Jordan.

One of the disadvantages of airships was that they flew low and slow in a part of the atmosphere prone to gusty winds, turbulence and lightning. When Hughs and other companies took jet aircraft into the stratosphere above the weather, modern flight was transformed. There is no reason why an airship should be confined to the turbulent lower atmosphere. The spy balloons that were in US news in recent weeks launched from China over Canada and the US flew at 60,000 feet, almost twice the cruising altitude of commercial aircraft. 

But hydrogen isn’t just for spy balloons. The developers of an airship called the h2 clipper plan to take advantage of the economic advantages of hydrogen airships in cargo transport. Hydrogen will be used for both lift and power and if it is green hydrogen, it will truly be a zero carbon aircraft. Loz Blain explains in New Atlas:

“We’re talking cargo loads up to 340,000 lb (150,000 kg – or the equivalent of about 115 Toyota Corollas), distances up to 6,000 miles (9,650 km, or roughly the distance between Los Angeles and Barcelona), at cruising speeds over 175 mph (280 km/h, or a little under one-third the speed of a Dreamliner passenger plane – but 7-10 times faster than a cargo ship can go).”

 

On paper it sounds good, jet aircraft are expensive, carbon-heavy energy hogs and these airships are beautiful. H2-Clipper won the prestigious hydrogen transport innovation awards in 2023. The company has tested models in wind-tunnels and has plans for a prototype by 2025 and a full-size production airship by 2028.

CFCs are rising: “This shouldn’t be happening”

We thought we’d solved CFCs but the ozone-depleting chemical is popping up in unexplained ways.

Just when we thought we’d solved the ozone hole, scientists are here to curb our enthusiasm for humanity’s ability to reverse anthropogenic damage. Atmospheric chemists policing the earth’s atmosphere have found a troubling reversal in recent data, stating that CFCs or ozone-destroying chlorofluorocarbons have sudden risen in the last 13 years, looking at data from 2010 to 2020. 

The Montreal Protocol banned most uses of chlorofluorocarbons and called for their global phase-out by 2010, and we thought it was a great success story: Earth’s ozone layer is projected to recover by the 2060s.

With results are published in Nature Geoscience: “This shouldn’t be happening,” says Martin Vollmer, an atmospheric chemist at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology in Dübendorf who helped to analyse data from an international network of CFC monitors. “We expect the opposite trend, we expect them to slowly go down.”

The researchers believe that factories are accidentally releasing three of the ozone-depleting chemicals — CFC-113a, CFC-114a and CFC-115 — while producing replacements for CFCs. At the time when CFCs were phased out, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) were brought in instead. But CFCs can be produced as by-products in the manufacturing stages of HFC. “Accidental” production is discouraged by the Montreal Protocol, but not prohibited by it. Look to Excavation, a new Apple TV series, to understand how we should not be letting mineral-grabbing business people to lead our future.

“A lot of this probably boils down to the factory level,” Vollmer says, pointing out that HFC production is on the rise. “A factory can be run relatively clean or relatively dirty.”

The researchers speculate that levels of CFC-112a might be on the rise because of its use as a solvent or as a chemical feedstock. However, they say they need to discuss this idea further with chemical engineers to confirm that assessment.

A research project for engineering students to take on?

Meanwhile, banned CFCs can be traced to China, where it is used mostly for home insulation. A Nature study estimated that somewhere between 90,000 and 725,000 tonnes of CFC-11 were produced and embedded in products like foams and gases between the years of 2013 and 2019, and these CFCs have not yet been emitted yet into the atmosphere. This foam is in buildings across China and the rest of the world where the home insulation material is not banned.

Genome research now looks to the diverse origins of Swahili culture, with Swahili people carrying a mixture of local African, Middle Eastern and South Asian ancestry. The Swahili culture (where Muslim imams worry about Chinese ports) was often thought of being an Arab colony, but new investigation into the DNA shows this is untrue.

Researchers led by Harvard’s Esther Brielle at the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology, analysed the genomes of 54 individuals buried in Kenya and Tanzania between the years 1250 and 1800 and found that they were descended from people who began mixing around the year 1000.

Nearly all of their East African ancestry seemed to come from women, whereas most of the Asian ancestry was contributed by men from Persia.

Persians are not Arabs. The new DNA results do support the oral traditions of the Swahili people in Kenya and dispel colonial myths and old writings of Europeans who came to Africa and found that Swahili civilization is “essentially an Arab civilization”, notes anthropological archaeologist Chapurukha Kusimba, who co-led the study in Nature.

After working with plants and AI for years I’ve known it to be true. Dozens of cannabis growers I’ve interviewed knew it was true too. And now science proves it: plants emit sound, which means they can talk. Not like us: they talk more in clicks and ticks and using the help of artificial intelligence scientists have transformed plant talk into audible sounds we can hear. 

The click-like sounds, similar to the popping of popcorn, are emitted at a volume similar to human speech, but at high frequencies, beyond the hearing range of the human ear.

“We found that plants usually emit sounds when they are under stress, and that each plant and each type of stress is associated with a specific identifiable sound. While imperceptible to the human ear, the sounds emitted by plants can probably be heard by various animals, such as bats, mice, and insects,” the scientists announced. The paper was published in the prestigious scientific journal Cell.

“From previous studies we know that vibrometers attached to plants record vibrations. But do these vibrations also become airborne soundwaves – namely sounds that can be recorded from a distance? Our study addressed this question, which researchers have been debating for many years,” says Hadani.

At the first stage of the study the researchers placed plants in an acoustic box in a quiet, isolated basement with no background noise. Ultrasonic microphones recording sounds at frequencies of 20-250 kilohertz (the maximum frequency detected by a human adult is about 16 kilohertz) were set up at a distance of about 10cm from each plant.

The study focused mainly on tomato and tobacco plants, but wheat, corn, cactus and henbit were also recorded.

Prof. Hadany explains: Before placing the plants in the acoustic box we subjected them to various treatments: some plants had not been watered for five days, in some the stem had been cut, and some were untouched.

“Our intention was to test whether the plants emit sounds, and whether these sounds are affected in any way by the plant’s condition. Our recordings indicated that the plants in our experiment emitted sounds at frequencies of 40-80 kilohertz. Unstressed plants emitted less than one sound per hour, on average, while the stressed plants – both dehydrated and injured – emitted dozens of sounds every hour.”

The recordings collected in this way were analyzed by specially developed machine learning (AI) algorithms. The algorithms learned how to distinguish between different plants and different types of sounds, and were ultimately able to identify the plant and determine the type and level of stress from the recordings.

Moreover, the algorithms identified and classified plant sounds even when the plants were placed in a greenhouse with a great deal of background noise. In the greenhouse the researchers monitored plants subjected to a process of dehydration over time and found that the quantity of sounds they emitted increased up to a certain peak, and then diminished.

“In this study we resolved a very old scientific controversy,” says Prof. Hadani. “We proved that plants do emit sounds. Our findings suggest that the world around us is full of plant sounds, and that these sounds contain information – for example about water scarcity or injury. We assume that in nature the sounds emitted by plants are detected by creatures nearby, such as bats, rodents, various insects, and possibly also other plants – that can hear the high frequencies and derive relevant information.

We believe that humans can also utilize this information, given the right tools – such as sensors that tell growers when plants need watering. Apparently, an idyllic field of flowers can be a rather noisy place. It’s just that we can’t hear the sounds.”

In future studies the researchers will continue to explore a range of intriguing questions: What is the mechanism behind plant sounds? How do moths detect and react to sounds emitted by plants? Do other plants also hear these sounds?

The show features “urban mining” as a main industry in a world over-consumed and warmed to the limits of its survival. What can we extract from our past once all the resources are used up? 

Rare earth metals, the vitamins to modern industry, power the kind of future we want to support: wind turbines, electric cars and rechargeable batteries. But these materials are limited in supply and the mining industry that pulls rare metals from the ground is fraught with regulatory hurdles and environmental woes. Most people don’t want a lithium mine in their backyard no matter how lucrative it might be for the nation.

Regenx from Canada has evolved the concept of mining: they are urban mining in the classic sense and pointing the way to cleaner and more sustainable ways of recovering minerals from industry. He tells Green Prophet: “Mining is a tough industry: you are out in the elements but we can mine 365 days a year, indoors. It is kind of a cliche, this “urban farming” but we really can do it in an eco-friendly manner.”

Typically today when a car dies or its catalytic converter replaced, it gets smeltered or goes to landfill. While not present in electric vehicles, a catalytic converter is an essential part of our still thriving petroleum-based economy serving diesel cars and trucks. It controls emissions by breaking down toxic gasses turning them into water and carbon dioxide. Palladium and platinum is needed for building new catalytic converters and these metals will play a critical role in the cleantech industry.

Peak palladium and platinum?

“What it takes to find platinum and palladium and then to mine it, is a huge footprint,” Pendura explains. Naturally extracting it from the trash is both common sense and a good business opportunity.

Each catalytic converter is valuable at the end of its life cycle because each contains between 3 to 7 grams of platinum and palladium. But getting those materials out can be toxic and bad for the environment. With 84% of the world’s annual supply of palladium used in catalytic converters it is easy to see how a limit on this resource can yet affect the price of next year’s car purchase or rental which have already gone sky high. 

In November, 2022 a catalytic converter theft ring in the US was busted for stealing catalytic converters from cars and trucks transforming them into half a billion dollars worth of rare metals.

Consider:

  •   2,110,000 oz. of palladium was used in the production of catalytic converters in North America in 2021
  •     27 million auto catalytic converters become available for scrap each year but only 30% of the palladium is recovered
  •     Diesel catalytic converters are expected to grow from USD 24.7 billion in 2017 to USD 39.3 billion in 2025
  •     Hydrogen fuel cells, medical devices, electronic glass, hard disc drives (cloud data storage), fertilizer, physical investment (coins), safety products, jewelry, dentistry, all of these rely on palladium and platinum

Faced with operational inefficiencies and operating past capacity, it is likely that no new smelters will be built in North America so the industry is being pushed towards a better solution for recovering rare metals. The Regenx process emits less carbon dioxide compared to traditional mining and smelters. Its costs are stable and predictable, and the company will generate additional future revenue through carbon credits, an attractive sell to ESG funds and impact investors.

The market can’t wait: supply chain issues from Russia and South Africa are crippling the availability of rare metals, and with Regenx, American and Canadian recycling companies can produce close to home. 

As of today, Regenx is the only commercially viable solution for the recovery of precious metals from catalytic converters besides smelters. The company plans on recovering 70,000 oz of platinum and palladium per 10 tonne/day/facility with anticipated annual revenues in excess of $100M USD. Future plant expansions are planned. 

“It is a key point in the automotive industry, the chemical industry. They have shareholders they want to appease as well and are becoming more vocal about sustainability and the environment, so the whole concept of cradle to grave or the circular economy is attractive,” says Pendura. “Our ability to do [urban mining] in an eco-friendly manner is getting attention. There is no doubt about it.”

Future-proofing the jobs of students today? “Hydrogen fuel cells use a tremendous amount of platinum,” notes Pendura: “I think it will be one of the major markets in the future. Anyone in precious metal recovery, you are putting yourself in a very attractive position if you are a student or an engineer.”
