Innovative new toolkit to fill gaps in missing shark and ray data

WWF and the Centre for Sustainable Tropical Fisheries & Aquaculture (CSTFA) at James Cook University have developed the first toolkit of its kind that provides a variety of ways to collect scientific data on sharks and rays to help conserve and manage these species, many of which are threatened.

GET THE TOOLKIT HERE

Sharks and rays are in a deepening crisis, with a quarter of all species threatened with extinction and many in significant decline, mostly due to overfishing. Exacerbating the situation is that nearly half of the species lack sufficient data to assess their conservation status.

The Rapid Assessment Toolkit for Sharks and Rays (the Toolkit) is aimed primarily at countries with insufficient species-specific data to allow science-based management. Such nations may have limited capacity and resources to gather data that could help them accurately determine the true states of their coastal environments, a situation common among marine-based communities. The Toolkit is designed to help remedy the dearth of basic information on movements, biodiversity and catch trends in many countries in Africa, Asia Pacific and Latin America.

“Having data is crucial for us to conserve and sustainably manage shark and ray populations,” said Dr. Andy Cornish, Leader of the WWF’s Sharks: Restoring the Balance initiative. “Without knowing what shark and ray species are in coastal waters, as well as how many are being caught and by whom, managers will not be able to take effective steps to reverse declines.”

Dr. Cornish noted that the deterioration of ocean health around the world has enormous implications for coastal communities in particular. “Sharks and rays perform a wide array of essential ecosystem functions, which means their conservation is even more urgent. The more we know about the status of shark and ray populations, the more we can focus conservation efforts where they are most needed,” he said.

The Toolkit consists of practical and simple step-by-step guidelines for collecting data by using six tools or methods contained in a 70-page manual. Appropriate tools can be selected depending on the knowledge gap of the particular waters where it may be used. They consist of how-to guidance in the areas of: taxonomy, genetics, creel and market surveys, baited remote underwater video systems (commonly known as BRUVS), tagging and tracking, and citizen science.

“The six tools are each broken into sections that explain why one would use a particular tool, what is the tool and detailed steps on how to use the tool,” said Dr. Cassandra Rigby, a CSTFA Research Fellow and chief author of the Toolkit. “Divers, for instance, can find useful ways to contribute information in the section on Citizen Science, or field operators can learn how to take a photo of a shark so it is useful for later accurate species identification.”

Increased Rain Gives the Golan Heights Sea of Galilee new life

0

Israel’s Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret) was still at critical water levels as recently as January, when a previous article depicted the then dire condition of the biblical lake. So critical in fact was the crisis that the lake’s water level had decreased so low that it nearly reached the dreaded “black line” of 214.7 meters below sea level  when the water becomes saline, due to underground salt springs.

The overall situation of the Kinneret has now improved significantly due to recent heavy rains which have also fallen on the Golan Heights, one of the Kinneret’s sources of fresh water. This situation prompted me to go on a day trip to the “Heights” and check out the situation there; especially the beautiful waterfalls of the Saar Stream, also known as Nahal Saar.

Starting out from central Israel on a rainy April 1, a virtual April fools joke in itself in drought plagued Israel, our group’s first nature stop was none other than Nahal Saar itself, to view the now swollen stream and truly spectacular water falls. As we approached the stream on foot, a near-deafening noise of rushing and falling water was emanating from it, as shown in a close-up view  of the top of the falls (photo).

The sheer power of the rushing water in this stream gives an indication of how much rainfall and snowfall has occurred on the Golan Heights and Mt. Hermon, a mountain range located on the northern section of the Golan . The cascading water in Nahal Saar flows eventually into the Jordan River and then into the Kinneret. The falls are located below the ruins of the Nimrod Fortress, built originally in 1229 by Al-Aziz Uthman, the younger son of the Muslim
Mamkuke conqueror Saladin.

Before reaching the Jordan, Nahal Saar flows through the historic site known as the Banias Nature Reserve, itself a natural wonder with smaller waterfalls and ruins of ancient settlements; including a site said to have been a place of worship to the Greek god Pan.

Mt. Hermon, the Golan Height’s highest mountain range, is a major source of water for the streams that eventually feed into area rivers, including the Jordan and Yarmuk rivers. This season’s precipitation have added considerably to the snow accumulation atop Mt. Hermon, from which the melting snowfalls feed into these streams.

Our tour included a visit to a small lake called Birkat Al-Ram, called Bherkat Ram in Hebrew. The picturesque lake is actually the flooded cone of an extinct volcano. The lake has been in danger of drying up due to excessive pumping for agricultural use.

The tour ended with a visit to a site called Mizpah HaShalom or Peace Vista, which gives visitors a spectacular view of the entire Lake Kinneret below. Viewing the lake after this season’s above average rainfall indicated that while some parts of the shoreline are still exposed, the rising of the lake’s water level by nearly three meters has
greatly improved the Kinneret’s situation over what it was previously.

Currently, the lake is only supplying water to neighboring Jordan, as part of the 1994 peace agreement with Israel. “Israel’s fresh water now comes from mountain and coastal aquifers and desalination” our guide said. The current lake level of -211.8 meters below sea level is still about 3 meters short of being completely full and reaching the “upper red level” of -208.8 meters below sea level, when excessive water is sent into the lower Jordan River.

The lower Jordan, now not much more than a thin trickle of “unholy water” from sewage and saline runoff, can use a bit of  Kinneret lake water as well.

Tips for Using Your Voicemail System Without Being Intrusive

As companies strive to integrate the benefits of technology while retaining personalized service for clients, one way to do this is by utilizing the best features of call center software. Here are a few tips for doing just that.

Utilizing IVR

When customers contact a company with a call center, they often start by dealing with an interactive voice response (IVR) system. An IVR is designed to help them navigate a number of options before they are connected with a staff person who can help them. Callers respond to prompts to help the system determine why they are calling and which agent can best help them.

In some cases, people may have very unique personal needs that don’t fit in a typical menu. To accommodate this, companies with call centers need to structure their IVR systems to ensure prompt assistance to all callers. For example, they should always have an option that allows the caller to be connected directly to an agent without the need to navigate the menu.

An example of where this may be necessary would be insurance companies. A person who was just in an accident may need assistance, but they may not be in the best state of mind to follow verbal prompts on an IVR. They may also feel uncomfortable interacting with an impersonal software system when faced with a personal crisis.

Ensuring that callers can connect with a live person as quickly as possible when necessary is a simple way to retain a personalized touch and assist those callers meaningfully.

Call back options

Sometimes, a customer calls a company, but no call center agent is available to help them immediately. Customers may be given different options, such as staying on the line and waiting or being called back.

When callers choose the “call back” option, the voicemail can help personalize service by allowing the person to record their name and even the reason for their call. This can help the business determine who is best suited to address the caller’s needs. When they call back, they can also address the customer by name and have a head start on identifying their problem and any relevant information that may help them resolve the caller’s needs.

Customers can also be given the option of leaving their name without the reason for their call. This ensures that they do not feel like they have to divulge sensitive or personal information if they choose not to. Many people do not wish to provide personal details, particularly if they are recording a message, so they should have the option of skipping this step if they prefer. This enables them to receive service without feeling like the IVR has been intrusive.

Communication options

One way that businesses have improved customer service is by providing omnichannel communications options to their customers. This means that companies empower customers to choose between a number of methods to address their issues, including chat and text.

When a call center agent isn’t available to take a person’s call in a timely manner, the caller may be given the option of requesting a call back. But the voicemail system can also be designed to provide them with other useful information. Instead of expecting a caller to leave personal information on a recording, they can hear options presented and elect a different communication method.

This could mean engaging in a chat with an agent. For example, a person who’s at a noisy accident scene and unable to withdraw to a quiet place for a phone conversation may learn that they can communicate by email or text instead.

Whenever clients are given options and empowered to make their own choices, they are more likely to feel that the company is striving to meet their needs. Customers are less likely to feel that the company’s systems are invasive or impersonal, because the customer retains control by choosing from multiple options.

When companies try to tailor their services to meet the personal needs and preferences of their customers, they are more likely to establish customer loyalty and increase customer satisfaction.

Reasons For Sudden Rise In CBD Appreciation

0

If you are like most people there was probably a time when you didn’t know what CBD meant. You probably also didn’t even know what the term stood for or what it was used for. Most people still don’t understand that CBD comes from both the hemp and marijuana plants. Whatever the situation is, there is a good chance that you know a lot more about CBD now. Even though there is no scientific or medical evidence backing the claims made by many CBD manufacturers it seems that that substance is all the rage. Not only are there a number of topical products available, but there are also tinctures available. So, why all the rage?

It Offers Multi Uses

One of the reasons that CBD is so popular is because it can be consumed in a number of ways. The most traditional method of consuming marijuana is smoking. Sure, marijuana can be infused with edibles, but most people tend to smoke it. That is not entirely the case with CBD. You will find a wide range of CBD products available on the market. Not only are there tinctures and topical products, but there are also edibles, shampoos, bath bombs, dog treats, and ointments. CBD can also be smoked, but the different methods of consumption provide non-smokers with a whole new level of delivery systems.

Cannabis For Non-Stoners

CBD is growing in popularity because it is a substance that is like cannabis for non-stoners. What does this mean? Well, CBD products are extracted from the hemp plant. The hemp plant only contains minute amounts of THC, which is the active ingredient in marijuana that gets your high. In fact, in order for CBD products to be legally manufactured and sold they must contain 0.3 percent THC or less. This is such a small amount that you won’t even get high, but you will be able to reap all the medical and soothing benefits. There is even a white label CBD provider that produces products that contain zero THC.

Less Hassle And Cheaper

Medical marijuana has been growing in popularity due to all the benefits that it can provide one with. However, in order to get a medical marijuana license, you have to go through a long, drawn-out process. In addition to this, it can be quite expensive if you don’t have insurance. Heck, it is still somewhat expensive if you do have insurance. This is where CBD can counter that. Not only can you walk into a CVS and purchase the substance without a prescription, but you can do so at fairly affordable prices.

Little To No Side Effects

Probably one of the best things about CBD and CBD products is that consumption comes along with little to no side effects. It is not an addictive substance and some of the most severe reports of side effects only include mild nausea or upset stomachs. When you weigh this potential side effects against the benefits of the substance there really is no comparison. And, if the substance is taken as prescribed there is a good chance there won’t be any negative effects at all.

Time to eat trees? Change the planet with Agroforestry

The global community faces unprecedented challenges due to climate change and unsustainable farming and land use practices. Land degradation, social disruption, inequality, depletion of natural capital . . . these are just some of the issues that need to be addressed, now. Agroforestry, the practice of trees on farms, offers one of the most effective methods for addressing these interrelated challenges. But to make it effective, there needs to be a strong connection between the science of agroforestry and how it is incorporated into public policy to effect positive social and environmental gains.

The 4th World Agroforestry Congress will bring together more than 1,200 agroforesters, researchers, decision-makers, students, business leaders, NGOs and farmers from more than 100 countries to discuss, debate, and share best practices in an effort to bridge the science-policy gap.

The Congress, under Mr Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, will be held from 20 to 22 May 2019. And for the first time, it will be hosted in Europe, in Montpellier, one of France’s oldest cities and home to the country’s first formal research into agroforestry. The event is organized by CIRAD and INRA, in partnership with World Agroforestry (ICRAF), Agropolis International and Montpellier University of Excellence.

Launching the Congress will be Sustainable Agriculture, a Food Issue: Trees on our Plates, an exploration of the ways agroforestry practices can, and do, positively influence agricultural practices and as a result the food we eat. The day-long event, to be held Sunday 19 May, is open to the public and will feature discussions, exhibitions, entertainment, a products corner and more. It is made possible by the Fondation de France and the French Association of Agroforestry.

“We wanted, through this public day ahead of the Congress, to raise awareness of agroforestry with civil society”, said Emmanuel Torquebiau, Agroforestry Correspondent at CIRAD and Chair of the Organizing Committee of the Congress.

Grounding the Congress’ goals is the need for a substantial societal debate around agriculture and its role in land and climate decay. By strengthening links between science, society and policy, the Congress offers a timely opportunity to evaluate agroforestry’s vital contribution to the agroecological transition of world agriculture.

“It is time for technical solutions to be discussed within civil society and that they become part of public policy”, said Christian Dupraz, INRA Research Director and Chair of the Congress Scientific Committee.

Monday, 20 May will serve as the official launch of the International Union of Agroforestry (IUAF), the first global association devoted to furthering the work of agroforestry.

On May 23, participants will be able to visit the oldest European experimental agroforestry site at Domaine de Restinclières in Prades-le-Lez (11 km north of Montpellier). Here, cereals (such as durum wheat and barley rotated with protein peas) are grown, with many species of trees, especially walnuts. In more stony soils, vineyards are grown with pines and cormiers. This agricultural domain of 50 ha belongs to the departmental council of Hérault and is scientifically piloted by the INRA center of Montpellier.

Conceptualised in the 1970s by international think-tanks seeking solutions to the problem of tropical deforestation, agroforestry is now recognized as a vital practice for protecting soil, responding to climate change issues and contributing to global food security. Its applications are quite diverse and include: hedges and alignment of trees or shrubs in and around plots; multilayer agriculture; production of timber or fruit in cropland; fodder trees; trees for honey; shade trees for perennial crops (coffee, cocoa, vine) or livestock; multistoried agroforests; and agroforestry gardens. Today, agroforestry has become a subject of international research and is part of the agronomic education curriculum of higher education institutions around the world.

In keeping with its green mission, the Congress has enacted several initiatives including voluntary climate compensation for participant’s trips the funds from which will be devoted to agroforestry research and development projects related to soil protection, and a concerted effort to limit the ecological footprint.

NASDAQ seed gene company Evogene jumps into cannabis

Evogene to Develop Next Generation Medical Cannabis Products through New Subsidiary – Canonic Ltd

Evogene Ltd. dual-listed on the NASDAQ and the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (NASDAQ, TASE: EVGN), a leading biotechnology company developing novel products for life science markets, announced last week that it has established  a new subsidiary – Canonic Ltd – to develop next generation medical cannabis products.Evogene has been evaluating the medical cannabis field for more than a year, including market evaluation, obtaining governmental approvals for its research program and the establishment of a research facility, technology assessment and initial product line planning.

Canonic’s initial activities will focus on creating improved cannabis varieties by addressing the current developmental roadblocks of yield, stability and specific metabolite composition. These development efforts will be based on the utilization of Evogene’s broadly applicable leading Computational Predictive Biology (CPB) platform, which has in the past demonstrated success in addressing similar objectives for other crops.

The current cannabis market is estimated at ~$13 billion and is expected to grow to ~$24 billion by 2025. Although the cannabis market is growing rapidly, it is well recognized that next generation products will need to address the current limitations of: (i) low metabolite yield – causing high costs for patients, (ii) low variety stability – causing inconsistent products that have become unreliable as a medical treatment and (iii) uncertainty in connecting cannabis metabolite profile to specific medical indications.

Evogene is uniquely positioned to provide a significant competitive advantage in the resolution of these development roadblocks through its CPB platform and its recognized capabilities as a leader in the area of plant genomics. These capabilities have been developed and utilized for more than a decade through multiple collaborations with world leading ag-companies such as BASF, Bayer, Corteva, ICL and Monsanto focusing on crop improvement via plant genomics and are now expected to allow Evogene’s newly established subsidiary, Canonic, to not only meet the challenges but also to accelerate the product development process through its predictive science driven approach.

Canonic’s current workplan focuses on three main product types, through a non-GMO approach: (i) high metabolite yield cannabis varieties (ii) stable varieties with consistent metabolite performance and (iii) cannabis varieties with a unique metabolite profile tailored to specific medical indications. The indications that the company will currently address are: post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), severe chronic pain and cancer.

Dr. Arnon Heyman, Canonic CEO stated: “Having led Evogene’s Ag-Seeds division for the past few years, I am proud to now lead Evogene’s cannabis activity as Canonic’s CEO. Evogene’s cutting edge genomic technology, alongside our multidisciplinary team of professionals, uniquely positions Canonic to bring to market the most advanced, stable and consistent next-generation medical cannabis products, and I am confident we can make a significant impact in the world of medical grade cannabis.”

Ofer Haviv, Evogene President and CEO: “The field of medical cannabis fits perfectly within both our plant genomics activities and our human therapeutics activities. We have been evaluating this field and our relevant competitive advantages for over a year, and now, with the establishment of Canonic, we expect the new company to advance rapidly in executing its mission of developing next generation medical cannabis products and to create substantial value in a relatively short time.

“This expectation is based largely on Evogene’s capabilities in plant genomics and computational know-how that will allow Canonic to uniquely address the major challenges in this large and rapidly growing field. We look forward to updating you with respect to Canonic’s progress.”

As Evogene has previously reported, in order to take full advantage of its broadly applicable CPB platform, Evogene focuses – either as an Evogene division or a subsidiary – on a number of significant life science based markets in which its technology can serve as the key differentiator in the development of next generation products. As with each of Evogene’s market focused subsidiaries, Canonic, as a wholly owned Evogene subsidiary, will have full corporate capabilities while continuing to have access to Evogene’s CPB platform for its market area of medical cannabis.  In addition, Canonic will have the right to pursue its own business strategy and secure additional financial resources at appropriate times in the future.

The global seed market is valued at $37B , as of 2016, of which 53% is attributed to available biotech seeds, seeds which have been improved by gene transformation, in crops such as corn, soy and cotton. Currently available biotech seed traits capture approximately $8B and it is expected that as additional traits become available, the market may reach $14B, thus attempting to provide a solution to improve traits such as yield, abiotic stress, disease resistance, insect control and herbicide tolerance.

As global seed companies constantly aim to reach beyond current limitations to address the world’s growing need for feed, food and fuel, Evogene forges collaborations with these global companies to discover genes and genomic elements to develop improved seed traits.

The key traits Evogene targets are:

  • Improved yield
  • Resistance to abiotic/environmental stress (e.g. drought…)
  • Nutrient uptake (N2)
  • Insect control
  • Disease resistance

Gulf oil and chem companies educate on plastic problem

0

The Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) has spread awareness about the benefits of plastics and responsible resource consumption at a community outreach event supported by BASF in Dubai Festival City Mall on 28 March 2019, as part of the 7th edition of GPCA’s Waste Free Environment (WFE) campaign.

Families and visitors of different age visited GPCA’s awareness kiosk and enjoyed a wide range of activities including working with local artisans to produce handicraft from used plastics. Visitors of the mall participated in a recycling competition held by the campaign’s official recycling partner, Bee’ah, for the chance to win a special prize. With the aim to encourage plastic recycling, participants had to dispose of their unwanted plastic bottles at reverse vending machines to take part in the raffle.

The campaign has already been underway in a number of GCC locations organized by GPCA member companies, with more activities planned throughout 2019. WFE started as a regional clean-up campaign led by GPCA and supported by its members and has now transformed into a year-round global environmental movement, with over 10,310 participants in 17 cities, 11 countries and three continents taking part in WFE in 2018 alone.

Dr. Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun, Secretary General, GPCA, commented, “With plastics coming under increased attack due to the rising waste management challenge, the Waste Free Environment campaign comes just at the right time to spread awareness about the importance of plastic recycling and foster responsible attitude towards waste management and litter disposal. The campaign aims to reinforce the message that plastic is not to blame; on the contrary, as the most versatile, sustainable and durable material, it plays a positive contribution and delivers long term benefits to society. To prevent plastic from leaking into the environment, we need to enact a real behavioral change that starts with the actions of each and every member of our society and continues with the young generations and the generations to come.”

Dubai oil company goes against plastic

Waste Free Environment Campaign supports the transition to a circular economy which aims to maximize the value and utility of materials over their lifecycle and minimize energy and resource consumption. WFE contributes to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals #12: Responsible consumption and production and #14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources. It is also in line with the GCC governments’ national visions to address waste management, enhance sustainability and preserve natural resources.

Earlier that week, GPCA organized a roadshow across several schools in Dubai to build awareness about the benefits of plastics and recycling among students aged between 7-12. Sponsors of this year’s campaign include SABIC, LyondellBasell, Dow Chemicals and Cosmoplast.

The UN asks Pope to fight for water

0

Pope Francis environment

Writing to Pope Francis, FAO’s Director-General has pointed to the need to safeguard the world’s water resources so that they can benefit every person in every country.

“Access to clean water and sanitation is essential for life, and it is the basis for maintaining a healthy life and helping millions of people out of poverty and hunger,” Graziano da Silva wrote in a letter to the pontiff on 1 April.

The FAO Director-General thanked Francis for his 22 March 2019 message of support to an event organized by the Rome-based UN agency on World Water Day. He noted that the pontiff’s words “always inspire and strengthen us in the struggle for a more just and more supportive world; where equality and social justice become ecumenical values.”

According to the United Nations World Water Development Report some 4 billion people, almost two thirds of the world’s population, suffer from severe water scarcity for at least one month a year.

As such, “we have a long way to go to convert access to water into an effective human right,” Graziano da Silva wrote.  He cited Francis 2015 encyclical Laudato sí, which “teaches us the importance of a balance between human beings and nature to guarantee a sustainable future for our planet.”

The FAO Director-General underscored the hardships suffered by many people, especially women and children, who in water-scarce regions, must walk for hours in order to fill containers with water which is essential for drinking and cooking as well as for personal hygiene. “It is essential to guarantee adequate access to water for these vulnerable people. We cannot prevent a drought from happening, but we can prevent a drought from resulting in a famine and a socio-economic upheaval,” he wrote.

The Brazilian experience and FAO’s “1-million cisterns” project in the Sahel

In the letter, Graziano da Silva described an initiative in Brazil where many poor family farmers in dry regions have benefited from the construction of cisterns in their homes to store rainwater. Based on the Brazilian experience, FAO and partners are implementing a project to build 1 million cisterns in the Africa’s Sahel region.

“It is essential to educate new generations on the use and care of water,” the FAO Director-General stressed, noting how many people can contribute to this through simple actions, such as not wasting food and buying food produced in a sustainable manner.

Graziano da Silva concluded by reiterating FAO’s commitment to continue cooperating with Pope Francis and the Holy See on all the issues related to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, especially the fight against poverty, hunger, malnutrition and forced migration, and for the promotion of peace.

Later this week the FAO Director-General will participate in the Land and Water Days event in Cairo, which will review progress made in addressing water scarcity in the Near East and North Africa region.

Sedom Mountain hides the longest salt cave in the world

0

Following the biblical recounting of Lot’s Wife who was turned into a pillar of salt, Israel’s Dead Sea region is now famous for another salt phenomenon: Malham Cave, the world’s longest salt cave. Get spelunking!

For thirteen years, this title was held by Iran’s Cave of the Three Nudes (3N) on Qeshm Island.  Now, an international expedition led by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU)’s Cave Research Center (CRC), Israel Cave Explorers Club, and Bulgaria’s Sofia Speleo Club, along with 80 cavers from nine countries, has successfully mapped the Malham salt cave in the Dead Sea’s Mount Sedom which, at 10 kilometers long, now bears the title of world’s longest salt cave

Salt caves are living things, geologically speaking.   They form mostly in desert regions with salt outcrops, such as Chile’s Atacama Desert, Iran’s Qeshm Island and Israel’s Dead Sea.   What helps them form is water—even arid climates see the occasional rainstorm.  When it does rain, water rushes down cracks in the surface, dissolving salt and creating semi-horizontal channels along the way.  After all the rainwater drains out, these dried out “river beds” remain and salt caves are formed.

Fitting this description is Israel’s Mount Sedom, an 11km long mountain that sits 170 meters below sea level at the southwestern tip of the Dead Sea.   Underneath a thin layer of cap rock, this mountain is made entirely of salt (just like the kind we season our food with).   Two factors protect this mountain from dissolving away: the sturdy cap rock that covers its salt, and the arid climate of the Negev Desert.   Mount Sedom gets roughly 50mm of rain a year, mostly in short but dramatic rain bursts.  As Professor Amos Frumkin, director of the CRC at HU’s Institute of Earth Sciences, explained, “The Malham Salt Cave is a river cave.  Water from a surface stream flowed underground and dissolved the salt, creating caves – a process that is still going on when there is strong rain over Mount Sedom about once a year.”   In this way, the Malham Salt Cave is “alive” and continues to grow.

Malham was initially discovered by the CRC back in the 1980’s.  Later, tens of CRC expeditions surveyed Mount Sedom and found more than 100 salt different caves inside, the longest of which measured 5,685 meters.  Subsequent carbon-14 tests dated the cave as 7,000 years old, give or take, and successive rainstorms created new passages for the cavers to explore.  When the international expeditions returned to Malham in 2018 and 2019, their surveys discovered the cave’s record-breaking, double-digit length. “Thirty years ago, when we surveyed Malham, we used tape measures and compasses.  Now we have laser technology that beams measurements right to our iPhones,” Frumkin recalled.

Notably, Malham is the world’s first salt cave to reach a length in the double-digits.   By comparison, Iran’s Qeshm Island salt cave, now the world’ssecond largest salt cave, measures only 6,580 meters.  In addition to its length, the Malham Cave contains a stunning array of salt stalactites and saltcrystals within its chambers.  These salt icicles hang from the cave’s ceiling and grow longer and fatter as each drop of water rolls down before evaporating into the salty air.

Currently, the survey team is processing final data from the new Malham Cave surveys to create an electronic map of the cave and to publish its findings.

The international cave expeditions that worked together to map Malham Cave include Israel’s Cave Explorers Club, HU’s Cave Research Center, and Bulgaria’s Sofia Caving Club & Speleo School.  The survey team included cavers from Israel, Bulgaria, France, United Kingdom, Croatia, Romania, Germany and the Czech Republic.

Boaz Langford, Member of HU’s Cave Research Center and head of the 2019 Malham Cave Mapping Expedition: “Israel’s salt caves are a global phenomenon.  My colleagues around the world are always amazed at what we find here.   Returning to survey Malham Cave allowed us to reveal its full dimensions and rank Israel as first among the world’s longest salt caves.”

Yoav Negev, Chairman, Israel Cave Explorers Club and project leader of the Malham Cave Mapping Expedition: “This entire project began with a call to Antoniya Vlaykova at Bulgaria’s Sofia Caving Club & Speleo School.  From the very beginning they showed real interest in collaborating with us and in taking on a central role in the project.  Soon we had a 50-member delegation—half international, half Israeli. The Malham Cave is a one of kind expedition that demonstrated the power of international caving delegations coming together to achieve something remarkable.  The fact that we came away with a new world record is icing on the cake.”

Efraim Cohen, Member of HU’s Cave Research Center: “Mapping Malham Cave took hard work.  We cavers worked 10-hour days underground, crawling through icy salt channels, narrowly avoiding salt stalactites and draw-dropping salt crystals.  Down there it felt like another planet.   Our next and final step is to map the tightest spots and the most difficult ones to reach.  When we’re all done, it’s likely we’ll add a few hundred meters to Malham’s impressive 10 kilometer length.”

The 2018 and 2019 Malham Cave expeditions were supported by the Bulgarian Federation of Speleology, the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Bulgaria, the European Federation of Speleology (FSE) and its sponsors Aventure Verticale, Korda’s, Scurion, and Bulgaria Air.

5 Health Benefits of Scheduling Regular Doctor’s Appointment

0

No matter how hard you work to ensure your health, everyone could use a little help from time to time. In fact, trying to implement a big lifestyle change all on your own is next to impossible. Rather, most people perform their best when they receive support, advice, and encouragement from those around them. And there’s no one better positioned to provide those services than a friendly doctor. To that end, today we’ll explain five massive health benefits you’ll receive when you decide to start scheduling regular doctor’s appointments:

Cures and Medicine

It may sound obvious to say that going to the doctor’s when you feel sick is a smart idea, but there are many people who have a deep-seated mistrust of doctors. The reality is that doctors can provide you with medicine to help clear up everything from a nagging cough to a potentially serious infection. If you don’t feel well, don’t try and soldier on alone; go see your M.D. instead!

Preventative Treatments

Though you may “feel” healthy now, you may also be at risk for developing worrying conditions and not even realize it. That’s why doctors monitor blood pressure and test vital signs every time they book an appointment. What’s more, certain diseases can remain asymptomatic for long periods of time and can only be detected if you visit dedicated testing centers. Those who want to protect their well-being for years to come need to make seeing the doctor part of their routine.

Peace of Mind

Illness anxiety disorder is real and its effects can be quite serious. However, for the rest of us, it’s important to see a doctor to prevent unnecessary fretting and stress. Going to the doctor’s will give you peace of mind and clear up any questions you have about your health.

Dietary Assistance

Many individuals find it difficult to stick to a diet, or else, they struggle to create a diet that produces weight-loss results. If either of those scenarios sounds familiar, then it may be a good idea to ask your doctor for some help in this matter. A good doctor will know how to recommend a diet that suits your needs, and they’ll likely be happy to share dietary resources with you!

Lifestyle Advice

Having trouble getting to sleep at night? Thinking about starting a family? Wondering why you feel tired all the time? Believe it or not, your doctor can offer medical solutions to resolve a number of issues in your everyday life. Before you start making assumptions about your health, give your doctor a call first and see what they have to say.

Maybe it’s heated floors in the bathroom. Or a secret hideaway at the bottom of the garden, perfect for escaping the summer heat.

Whatever your ambitions, it’s important to remember dream homes do exist. And they’re not created by magic. They’re made out brick and earth, as well as hearty amounts of grit and determination. So, if you’ve got a dream and a plan, why not find out where it can take you?

It’s what the owners of these incredible nature inspired homes did and, would you take a look at what they’ve managed to achieve!

Hang Nga Guesthouse, Vietnam

Hang Nga Guesthouse in Dalat, Vietnam, was built to resemble the trunk of a giant tree. Affectionately dubbed ‘the Crazy House’ by locals, it is open to the public as a small hotel. It contains ten rooms, each with its own special theme. As the shape of its twisted and uniquely curved outer wall suggests, the building is full of unusual nooks, crannies and hiding spots.

Monsanto Houses, Portugal

Portugal’s Monsanto village is an architectural wonder; living proof humans can create and build without destroying precious natural features. In this tiny village – which has remained mostly unchanged for centuries – homes have been built around, between, alongside, underneath and even inside gigantic granite boulders. The boulders were there first. So, the people of Monsanto, naturally, incorporated them into their houses.

Eliphante Art House, Arizona

If you’re ever in Arizona, you might want to take a trip to the legendary Eliphante Art House. It is so called because its entrance – a dark tunnel which leads to a breathtakingly inventive series of sculptural and mosaic rooms – is shaped like an elephant’s trunk. Artist Michael Kahn and his wife began construction on the unusual house all the way back in 1979. It took the pair a total of twenty eight years to finish! The end result is a building which, from the outside, marries flawlessly with its environment.

Cappadocia Rock Houses, Turkey

High up in the arid hills of Turkey, you’ll find the majestic region of Cappadocia. Millennia ago, volcanic eruptions blanketed the area with a thick coating of ash. This ash would later solidify solidified and turn into soft rock that’s perfect for carving. Since then, locals have tunnelled directly into the rock to create labyrinthine houses, mansions, monasteries and more. Can you believe there are underground buildings here which rise to eight storeys? Unsurprisingly, the region is popular with visitors who flock to Cappadocia to marvel at its subterranean settlements.

Why ‘Dream’ Home Doesn’t Have to Mean Impossible Home!

There’s no denying it takes a great deal of skill and dedication to build a dream home. Yet, people do it all the time, often starting from a place of scant knowledge and experience. Perhaps the biggest challenge is time. It took the owners of the Eliphante Art House almost thirty years to realise their vision. If you want to build a dream home, you’ve got to be in it for the long haul.

Eco Marketing Campaigns

Every business in any area of sustainability that wants to grow and succeed needs to perform creative marketing. In doing so, it can inform potential customers about its products or services while strengthening its relationship with current ones. Nowadays, there are two main types of marketing methods.

There is traditional and digital marketing. An enterprise in areas like solar energy, commercial solar energy and DIY solar energy, can choose to utilize either of these types. In addition to that, there are enterprises which make use of both types combined. This is known as integrated marketing. Here is more about this and how competent enterprises are implementing this marketing method.

What is an integrated eco marketing campaign?

This is a marketing effort which combines both traditional and digital media. It enables consistent, complementary communication with the target market.

An integrated marketing campaign is a multi-disciplinary approach. It is also very popular. That’s because studies have revealed that 72% of all customers want to connect with their favorite firms through integrated marketing campaigns. This is because consumers normally crave variety and they also want to be reached in a way that is comfortable to them. Teens like Tiktok, older adults like Instagram and grandparents like Facebook. And some people who avoid social media prefer billboard ads, and email.

Many consumers watch TV and read their paper while also spending a substantial amount of time online. Hence, they respond to both traditional and digital marketing methods. Here is a deeper explanation of this type of campaign and how you can implement it for your firm.

The components of an integrated marketing campaign

An integrated marketing campaign combines multiple marketing elements. Examples of these are direct marketing, public relations, social media, print ads, yard signs, YouTube and Tiktok videos and TV advertisements as well.

For example, you can use a press release distribution services to distribute your press release. Every firm can mix up these elements of its integrated marketing campaign according to their own way. As such, this type of campaign can take multiple forms.

Enterprises that are training integrated campaigns is to see multiple outcomes. For example, the goal of an integrated marketing campaign is to have x% increase in new customers and total attendance at a specific event. Many firms have implemented integrated marketing campaigns and experienced marked success. While creating an integrated marketing mix, it is important to make sure that the main focus is about internet marketing. Here is why.

Why you need to maintain your focus on internet marketing

You’re able to reach a wider audience at a much lower cost. Thanks to the internet, you can reach millions of people around the world in seconds. You can create advertisements and post them online for pennies. After that, these ads can reach a plethora of people. In doing so, you’re able to create a global following and audience too. People spend many hours every day surfing the internet. Therefore, marketing online is a low risk, high reward type of effort.

The internet engages with your customers interactively

Nowadays, the opportunities to interact with audiences from any part of the world are gradually increasing due to social media marketing. Furthermore, engagement is also more direct thanks to chatbots. Brands can use these methods to interact with the masses and advertise. Moreover, they can implement experimental technologies as well. A prime example of such is Virtual Reality (VR).

You can track customer metrics

Digital marketing campaigns have one major advantage over traditional methods of marketing. You can actually track the performance of your advertisements. It is possible to track consumer data and use it to see the performance of a specific digital marketing method. This allows you to collect substantial customer data and use it to correctly improve your strategy. Traditional marketing methods had no way of accomplishing this. The ability to track client metrics gives innovative businesses a huge advantage because they can adapt to changing trends over time.

In today’s world, business is highly competitive. Therefore, it is necessary to implement the most innovative marketing methods so as to capture the attention of your target market. Traditional methods have worked well for a long time. However, the digital age is here and the internet rules.

Therefore, there is a need for digital marketing methods too. Smart brands combine these methods and implement an integrated marketing campaign. In doing so, they cover the customer base that responds to traditional marketing methods as well as the more tech-savvy clients. Furthermore, they can view metrics from their integrated marketing campaign and adjust to fit changing trends in the market. Seeing as adaptation is an important skill in business, executing an integrated marketing campaign is a perfect example of adaptation in your marketing efforts. It is the marketing method of the future!

My car has been written off – what should I do now?

car written off carshare time

Having your car written off is never good news, and it can initially be quite overwhelming. Understandably, therefore, some drivers can find themselves confused about what to do next. If you ever find yourself in the same position, it’s worth knowing that while your car insurers will handle most of the key steps involved, there are still a few key decisions you can make to determine the final fate of your car. But you have to decide them quickly!

Who decides if a car is a write-off?

This falls to a trained assessor employed by your insurance company. Most car insurance policies say that it’s their responsibility to conduct a detailed examination of your car, and then decide whether to pay you to get it repaired, repair it themselves, or simply declare it a write-off.

A car might be written off for several reasons, but they all fall into the same two broad categories. Either it’s so badly damaged that it’s unsafe to drive, or the potential costs of getting it repaired are greater than the current value of the vehicle, making it uneconomical for them to put it back on the roads.

If your car is declared a write-off, your insurer will then assign it a salvage category (sometimes known as a salvage title).

What are the different salvage categories?

There are four main salvage categories: A, B, N and S. They’ve been established by the Association of British Insurers, and are designed to indicate the general condition of a vehicle at a glance.

  • Category A: Vehicles in this category are strictly scrap only, as they’re too badly damaged to put back on the roads.
  • Category B: The vehicle cannot be repaired, and the body shell must be scrapped. Parts can feasibly be removed from it for salvage, however.
  • Category S: The vehicle has suffered serious structural damage to its chassis, and requires extensive repair that would outweigh the vehicle’s value.
  • Category N: The vehicle has non-structural damage, and can’t be driven unless professionally repaired – the costs of which, again, would outweigh its value.

What you can do when your vehicle is designated as written off

Challenge the decision

When your insurer informs you your car is written off and provides you with a settlement figure, you can challenge their decision, but your window for doing so is very brief. Your insurer has to notify the Motor Insurance Fraud and Theft Register (MIAFTR) within 7 days of the declaration, and once that happens, it becomes a lot more difficult to reverse. To successfully challenge the decision, you need solid evidence to prove your car is worth more than their valuation of it. This includes quotes from mechanics to show differing repair costs, quotes from scrap yards which offer an alternative view on the true salvage value of your car, and reliable evidence of its market value.

Buy the car back from your insurer

If your car has been designated as an S or N (structural or non-structural) faults, you can sometimes apply to buy it back from your insurer and subsequently have it re-registered. If this is an action you’d like to pursue, you have to let your insurer know as soon as you can. (However, it’s worth getting an independent mechanic to give you their professional valuation of the car, just to be on the safe side.)

If you’re successful, your insurer will then give you your payout and sell the car back to you. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that if you do this, your car will still be on the MIAFTR, be worth far less when you come to sell it on later. This is by design – it’s intended to protect consumers from unknowingly buying “new” cars which have been previously written off.

Scrap your car

If your car has been designated as a Category A or B write off, you can’t repair or resell it. Instead, you’ll need to scrap it and reclaim or sell any parts that can be salvaged. Potentially, your insurance company can do this for you. However, if you’re doing it yourself using services like Scrap Car Network, it’s worth knowing that removing any parts from your car can have a significant effects on its resale value, so unless you’re an experienced mechanic or automotive professional yourself, it’s rarely worth doing.

If it does come to that, organisations like Scrap Car Network can provide a quick and easy way to scrap your car. Paperwork is kept to a minimum, and it takes as little as 10 seconds to get an online valuation of your car. What’s more, choosing them enables you to directly contribute to their social and charitable causes, at no extra cost.
