qatar-green-awardsThe third annual Green Awards were distributed last week at the Four Seasons hotel in Doha, Qatar.

Qatar Today and its partners handed out the 2010 Green Awards last week. Leaders from all sectors of society attended the event, which was held on November 27th at the Four Seasons Hotel in Doha, including high ranking officials, corporate leaders, and sustainability and environment executives.

The awards were distributed by Oryx Advertising Company’s Chairman, Mr. Yousuf Jassem Al Darwish, Dr. Saif Al Hairi, Vice Chairman of the Qatar Foundation, Eng. Issa Al Mohannadi, CEO of Dohaland, and Vice President of Qatar Today Magazine, Ravi Raman. This is the first and only such annual award program devoted to Qatar’s environment, but in its third year, according to Qatar Today, the number and quality of entries have improved drastically.Prizes were awarded in nine categories, and comprised entries ranging from small, local projects to those with national application. Some notable winners are as follows:

Doha Bank was awarded first place in the Environmental Leadership category, while Friends of the Environment were recognized as leader in the Best Public Awareness Campaign. Dolphin Energy Limited one first place for its Environmental Vision in the Energy Section and Al Haya Waste Management was chosen as the best Green Product and Service.

Qatar Today partners with HSBC and DOHALAND, as well as DHL, Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC) and Jamila Magazine to stage what have become “coveted honors” given the high profile people involved. In a press release, Dohaland, led by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned, made the following statement:

Dohaland is delighted to partner with Qatar Today in taking on the challenge of spreading awareness on green issues in Qatar. Sustainability and environmental awareness are at the core of what we do at Dohaland, and partnering with an organization that shares with us these same values will ensure that individuals, businesses, and society at large stand up and take notice. Together we can create a better, greener, more sustainable Qatar of the future.

Qatar Today is just one publication under the Oryx Advertising Co WLL umbrella, which was established three decades ago. Other publications include Qatar Al Yom, Woman Today, and Glam. The annual Green Awards recognize initiatives that are aimed at recycling, educating, and in general improving the country’s environmental record.

In fact, wherever she traveled – whether it was Viet Nam or South Africa or England – it became clear how inefficiently the mandate to re-think our consumer culture is reaching the general public.
