Support Sea Shepherd to Save the Whales

Killer whales attacking boats, mom and her calf
Orca whales are attacking and sinking ships in the Strait of Gibraltar

In the 3rd of this series of water-related posts, following on from our recent news of a whale dying in the Mediterranean Sea (which you can read here) on the sad death of a whale off the coast of Ashkelon, Israel we look at the pioneering activism of the sea Shepherd Conservation Society, who exist under the directorship of Captain Paul Watson, to protect and preserve whales and all the creatures of the sea, from human cruelty and exploitation.

Originally formed in 1977 by ex-Greenpeace co-founder Watson, the work of Sea Shepherd ranges from baby seal protection, preventing illegal poaching, whaling and shark hunting, and upholding and enforcing all International laws governing the World’s oceans (see ocean despoliation here) and marine life. (Why are hundreds of whale fetuses in a museum in Norway?)

The Society and its leader are controversial due to their methods of engagement with whaling vessels and those involved in these activities. The International laws are very shady and circumspect, and several Countries over the years have backtracked on their commitment to end whaling. Japan and Norway are particularly guilty of this.

Japan in particular reserves the right to kill a set number of whales annually ‘in the name of research’. Sea Shepherd and Independent sources claim that this whale meat is then sold on the open market.

Watson and his committed crew of volunteers from all around the world, ram whaling ships, try to divert them off course, fly (in a helicopter) at them, spray smoke flares over the ships, and come close to the letter of the law in activist action.

Sea Shepherd is run entirely on the donations it receives from worldwide supporters, and this includes the 4 ships currently in the society’s fleet, called Neptune’s Navy.

Volunteer crew members on the ships speak of the “moral need” to be doing the work they do, sometimes risking their own lives in harsh conditions to try to protect the lives of whales and other ocean inhabitants.

Green Prophet commends the organisation, and seeing the work that they do is hopeful both for the marine environment and the morality of humanity.

Billboard waste to hand bags

Naomi of Abu Yoyo

They’re up, then they’re down. Up, then down. The story with the billboards along the Tel Aviv Ayalon Highway is a bit of a yo yo. Activists fight to have them taken down for polluting our collective consciousness and then advertisers win the battle and the billboards are up again.

That’s why we excited to hear about Naomi’s Abu YoYo (meaning piggyback ride) company which is designing goods from billboard waste. Check out her kitchen accessories for drying dishes, bags and office products.

Naomi writes Green Prophet, “In my small studio in Tel-Aviv I am designing and producing bags and accessories for the office and home, which are all made of used advertisment banners.

abu-yoyo-green-prophet-kitchen.jpg

“In the struggle to forbid the large ads in Tel Aviv and on the highways, little is said about the material those things are made out of … well, it’s plastic, a very toxic variety, and tons of it is disposed of in unfriendly ways. (Only in Tel Aviv, at least 6,900 meters of it are produced and disposed of every month!).”

Naomi’s idea is not entirely new. We’ve heard of projects like this from Berlin, but we love how design and social consciousness are now merging in Israel.

Get a Shabbos-Clock for Your Heater

0

feb-21-get-a-shabbas-green-prophet.jpeg

Religious Jews will not turn on or off electricity on the Sabbath. Their solution? A timer electrical outlet, a shabbas-clock. Set the times you want the appliance plugged in to be on and let it go…

To save energy these outlets are great to use for space heaters. If you use space heaters when those cold nights hit so does the dilemma of whether to keep your heater on or not hits as well. If you use these outlets you can have your heater turn on and off periodically throughout the night. I personally have it on as I fall asleep and set it to turn on again about 15 minutes before I wake up. This way I can wake up warm and save energy.

You can do this too and GreenYourselfNightly.

Ride a bike, Walk, Jog, or Run

If you aren’t doing this already you’re probably saying: Are you out of your mind?! I can’t do that! Or perhaps: Yeah, I know I should, I will tomorrow. While tomorrow just becomes the next day…

It’s time to stop pushing this off. Make tomorrow today. If you don’t have time, make some, it’s for your health as well as your planet’s. If you are out of shape, this is your chance to get into shape. If it’s “not for you” ask yourself what about being healthy is “not you.”

By biking, walking jogging or running to get between short distances you are not only assuring your continuing health yourself but you are reducing carbon emissions.

What a wonderful way to GreenYourselfDaily.

“Let There Be Water”

feb-20-let-there-be-water-green-prophet.jpg

Almost every office has one. Sitting in the corner with that strange square body with a big blue head… The water cooler! Ahh just the thought of it makes me feel thirsty. I love the “glub glub” when you pour yourself a cup of water.

Well it might be time to say goodbye to that lovely musical sound when pouring oneself a cup.

No, there is not ban; water-coolers are not becoming illegal. Something better has come to town. Imagine not having to waste precious office space with those gigantic 5 gallon bottles, or not having to order more when you are running low. Imaging if you could extract water from thin air…

With eight steady writers and up to several new posts a day, Green Prophet is growing exponentially and helping to make the world just a little greener (we hope). In less than two months we have acquired a substantial following from all over the world.

There are several ways to keep the green love flowing, as creepy as that sounds. Green Prophet has just added an email subscription tool on the top right corner of our blog “Prophecies By Email.” By subscribing you can get our new posts delivered straight to your inbox every day.

If you have a website or blog, add our link. In the blog world it’s called “link love.” We’ll probably add yours in return – just ask us.

If you have a website or blog and would like to stream our news directly to your site, also – just ask us how.

Other ways to help the green grow: Green Prophet fans can let us know at Technorati, where you can favorite us here. If you feel like ranting and sharing your thoughts about the environment, join us on Facebook (hugs to Michael for setting that up).

Let your friends (and foes) know about us too. And last but not least, a discussion is starting to brew on our Yahoo group.

Thanks to everyone for tuning in!

Filter Your Water

0

feb-19-filter-your-water-green-prophet.jpg

Much of the bottled water on the market is actually not so natural. As a rule, bottled water is no safer or healthier than the H2O that flows from municipal water systems. Many are bottled from natural sources; however, some are simply filtered or even only tap water in a fancy package. The ones that do come from natural sources sometimes can be destructive to the environments from which they are pumped.

The biggest problem with bottled water is the packaging. Empty bottles add to litter and solid waste. If you re-use your bottles by filling them with filtered water you can keep our world clean from excess plastic waste and it’s a great way to GreenYourselfDaily.

Hybrid Cab Fleet Taking Over Tel Aviv?

monit-tel-aviv-greenprophet.jpg

In a bid to cut down on pollution (and greenhouse gases we hope), the Tel Aviv Municipality is conducting a feasibility study on the use of hybrid taxi cabs in the overly congested and polluted city. We say go one step further – turn Tel Aviv into a car-free zone.

The approval is expected to go through in a couple of months and if accepted, could mean Tel Aviv’s fleet of about 5,000 cabs and their drivers will be lured to switch over to the “greener” option with tax incentives.

An Underground Water Tour of Israel's Domestic Water Pipes

5

water pipes israel middle eastGreen Prophet’s James goes underground to see what happens below the surface in Israel’s water pipes.

I will open rivers on the bare heights and springs in the midst of the valleys. I will make the wilderness a pool of water and the dry land fountains of water. – Isaiah

Always ready and willing to go to the heights and depths for a good story, this intrepid greenie spent part of yesterday with a bunch of journalists under the soil of Israel, submerged in a rusty water tunnel, courtesy of Mekorot, Israel’s National Water Company.

Many in Israel talk of the mis-management here of this scarcest of resources, and it is also clear how water has been used as a political tool; with the Palestinians, shipped in from the Turks, and even secretly siphoned from desert aquifers away from other Middle East countries.

An interview with a water expert at Sde Boker some years ago alerted me to how water access is a conduit to talks, negotiations and deals (many of them secret) across the Middle East, and that the fragility of this resource sometimes binds a fragile peace.

Controversial New Arab City in the Galilee

1

Probably my best memory of Israel is hiking in the Galilee as a teenager. With its green expanses enlivened with blood-red and yellow flowers and sparkling streams, there is no place in Israel like the Galilee.

Much political furor has been provoked by Minister Meir Sheetrit’s promise to build an Arab city in the Galilee. (With the ensuing remarks from both right and left evoking a tiresome paint-by-numbers quality.)

Forget about politics for a minute. What about the environmental consequences?

Buying in Bulk

0

Try to buy in bulk  from warehouse stores or the shuk. Often these items come in big jars which you can use. But even if you cannot, you’ll often find that they offer items that have less packaging and therefore have less trash when you are done using them. An added benefit is that it can also save you money.Just another way in which you can GreenYourselfDaily!

Children… Go Play by the Cesspit

0

feb-18-children-go-play-by-the-cesspit-green-prophet.jpg

I can go on “home-binges” where I will coop myself up inside for days at a time. There can be the productive kind where I’m a workhorse and so do not get out. There are other times when it’s just out of laze… After one of these binges my house will inevitably end up a pigsty.

This is what is happening to our mountain aquifer.

Afcon Industries to Fund Wind Power in Israel

0

A $100 million investment by Afcon Industries is more than hot wind. It’s a testament to put Israel on the cleantech map and the country’s renewable energy goals set in the right direction. When ready, the cleantech project could supply up to 5 percent of Israel’s energy needs. It could set an example for the Middle East by being the largest wind farm in the region.

The City Garden

5

Every morning I feel oneness with nature and my creator when I go to my green city garden just outside my front door in Tel Aviv. There I watch my passion fruit vine grow with tenacity; every morning I check its small tendrils racing to catch the sun while it reaches out to clasp any solid object.

As the passion fruit and other plants in my Mediterranean garden grow bigger – the olive trees, the myrtle, cactuses, native grasses and vines – an increasing number of animals find and build homes next to mine.

Aerate Your Water

0

feb-18-aerators-green-prophet.jpg

Installing Low-Flow showerheads and faucet aerators is probably the single most effective water conservation action you can do for your home.

Inexpensive and simple to install, low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators can reduce your home water consumption as much as 50%, and reduce your energy cost of heating the water also by as much as 50% as well.

This conservation of water and energy is not only good for the environment, but savings in your water bills will more than pay for the cost of the aerators within a few months.

From then on, you enjoy continued savings and of course… It’s a great way to GreenYourselfDaily.
