Potential National Geographic Explorer of the year, environmentalist David de Rothschild sailed a 60ft catamaran made of 12,000 plastic bottles and other recycled plastic material. In 130 days, he and his crew traveled 8,000 miles from San Francisco to Sydney. A wayward member of the banking empire but a tireless ambassador for the environment, David is one of Green Prophet’s favorite eco-hunks. This trip in particular was designed to make people aware of the 4 billion tonnes of plastic waste that leaks into our oceans year.

As a tour leader who led “eco-friendly” camping trips throughout North America, Tafline soon realized that she was instead leaving behind a trail of gas fumes, plastic bottles and Pringles. In fact, wherever she traveled – whether it was Viet Nam or South Africa or England – it became clear how inefficiently the mandate to re-think our consumer culture is reaching the general public. Born in Iran, raised in South Africa and the United States, she currently splits her time between Africa and the Middle East. Tafline can be reached at tafline (at) greenprophet (dot) com.
