This Thursday will be a very environmentally conscious day in Israel, between the Earth Hour light outages taking place in almost 20 cities, the “Carmel Repair” event to rehabilitate the burned-down Carmel Forest, and the Green Globe environmental award ceremony celebrating the past year’s environmental heroes.
Taking place for the eighth consecutive year, the Green Globe award ceremony is held by Life and Environment – the umbrella organization for over 120 Israeli environmental organizations. This annual green “Oscar”-like awards event recognizes environmental activist excellence in the governmental, business, and civilian sectors.
Naor Yerushalmi, the CEO of Life and Environment, said about this year’s ceremony that:
“The Green Globe ceremony is taking place this year not long after the ecological and nuclear disasters in Japan, which indicate our duty to be aware of the natural forces that are stronger than us and to reduce the wasting of resources for the benefit of future generations. The public now has an opportunity to demonstrate its power to decision makers, and demand that they prioritize environmental and public health issues.”
And this year’s Green Globe awards are going to:
Green Globe: Environment Minister Gilad Arden
Environmental Activist: Amiad Lapidot
Business Sector: Yuki Gil of the Shoresh Company Ltd.
Local Organization: Headquarters of the Struggle to Save Sasgon Valley
