Meeting Your Green Love

Winter is on its way, and with it the bone-chilling cold that penetrates every poorly insulated apartment in Israeli cities. Now is the perfect time to stop contemplating global warming alone, and one American Web site, Greensingles, promises to help its members connect to other carborexics with this pitch:

  • You are a member of the environmental, vegetarian, or animal rights community…
  • You share an interest in the many aspects of green living…
  • You have trouble meeting people because of your special interests and beliefs…
  • You live in a small town or a big city, but don’t like the bar scene or typical singles groups…
  • Congratulations, you are a kindred spirit and a Green Single! And, you are not alone. There are millions of seekers just like you.

In addition to offering a dating service, Green Singles also promises to donate 5 percent of proceeds to environmental non-profits, and hosts a Green Market classified ad board.

Unfortunately, a quick search of the site found no matches in Israel. However, if JDate, Zoosk or Mekusharim (all sites commonly used for dating) are listening, this could be a great way to widen the ranks of local environmental activists.

Daniella Cheslow grew up in a car-dependent suburb in New Jersey, where she noticed strip malls and Wal-Marts slowly replacing farmland. Her introduction to nature came through hiking trips in Israel. As a counselor for a freshman backpacking program at Northwestern University, Daniella noticed that Americans outdoors seemed to need to arm themselves with performance clothing, specialized water bottles and sophisticated camping silverware. This made her think about how to interact with and enjoy nature simply. This year, Daniella is getting a Master’s in Geography from Ben Gurion University of the Negev. She also freelance writes, photographs and podcasts. In her free time, she takes day trips in the desert, drops off compost and cooks local foods like stuffed zucchini, kubbeh and majadara. Daniella gets her peak oil anxiety from James Howard Kunstler and her organic food dreams from Michael Pollan. Read more at her blog, TheTruthHerzl.com.
