One of the worst fires in Israel’s history swept through and charred 5,000 hectares of the Carmel Forest, killing more than 40 people. Prison guards in a bus en route to evacuate prisoners were burned to death when their vehicle became engulfed in flames. Experts suggest that unusually dry and hot conditions along with high winds contributed to the fire’s ferocity, and that certain sections of the forest that have sustained repeated damage may never recover. Investigations are ongoing.
