Canaan Fair Trade Creates Sustainable Community of Palestinian Farmers

0

"west bank sustainable farm"Bigger isn’t always better.  Canaan Fair Trade helps small-scale Palestinian farmers survive and thrive.

With the modernization of agriculture, farming has become an industry instead of a small-scale, community effort.  All over the world, small-scale farmers who have retained traditional (and many times organic) methods of agriculture have been pushed out by larger, industrial farms.  And in cases where small-scale farms have managed to exist, they often have to compete with the cheaper prices of larger farmers and reduce their prices below the point of fair trade.

Canaan Fair Trade has formed a cooperative of around 1700 family farms in Palestine, enabling them to continue their sustainable, small-scale and largely organic farming efforts.

Mediterranean Countries Shut Down Coral Protection

0

red-coral-necklaceFor the sake of trade in red coral such as this, several Mediterranean countries opposed a measure that would have protected precious coral.

Already plagued by a bucketful of ecological maladies, the Mediterranean faces further degradation of its precious coral, Bikya Masr reports. In December several Mediterranean countries were among those that shot down a potential Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) measure to protect diminishing red and pink coral. “Human livelihood issues” was the most widely cited reason for opposition.

Can An L-Shaped Skyscraper Scrub The Jordan River?

0

chile-l-shaped-skyscraperThis building is designed to accommodate residents, commercial activity, and clean the Mapocho River. Is this what the Jordan River needs?

Despite valiant efforts by Friends of the Earth Middle East (FoEME) and other worthy organizations, the Jordan River is in a perilous state. This 156 mile long river is ecologically essential to Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, the Palestinian Territories, and Syria.

In addition to diversion projects that interrupt flow to the shrinking Dead Sea, the river is heavily contaminated. Students at the Universidad de Chile have designed a skyscraper that doubles as a river cleaner. Could this be a potential solution for the dying Jordan River too?

Make your own non-toxic home cleaning products

eco home cleaning guide
Some essential and basic “green” cleaners for the house – for wood, the kitchen sink and even the toilet bowl.

Cleaning out the house is not everyone’s favourite job, but with all the different products available on the supermarket shelves, it can also be an expensive one.

Here are a few tips to cleaning your house in a more economical, greener way. With essential ingredients like white vinegar, lemon, and olive oil, it’s a snap. Some of us want to use greener products to be gentler on the earth, the city’s water recycling systems. Some of us can’t stand the toxic, synthetic odors. Some don’t like the way caustic cleaning materials affect our skin and lungs. Read on for all the great tips.

Sustainable cleaning shopping list:

• White vinegar- just use the cheap white distilled vinegar
• Lemons
• Olive oil- the most basic will do
• Bicarbonate soda/baking powder works just as well – it’s a mix of bicarbonate of soda and starch.

Sustainable cleaning equipment

Natural, reusable rags- old shirts, cloths.

Stick to reusable mops and rags instead of throw disposable paper and sponges that contain chemicals and soaps for cleaning. They are more expensive and often more toxic.

How to eco clean the windows

Take two to three tablespoons of vinegar to three litres of warm water in a spray bottle. Make sure it is a new bottle or cleaned well from any toxins hat might have been in it before. You will inhale microdrops of the spray.

Dry with crumpled newspaper. (And yes, please still buy actual newspapers. It keeps the printing presses and journalists in business.)

Green clean your floors

foundation repair eco laminate

Take eight tablespoons of white or cidar vinegar diluted in a gallon of hot water is great for mopping vinyl, laminate (not an eco option) or ceramic tiled floors. We often add half a lid of Ecover floor cleaner to the mix which gives a great citrus smell.

Toxin free sink cleaning

Get a clean spray bottle and fill it with pure vinegar, do not dilute it at all. White vinegar works the best. Spray all over the sink and leave for a few minutes and then wipe away with a rag.

This is a great way to get rid of all those hard water stains.

Cleaning microwaves and ovens

A cloth dampened in equal parts of vinegar and water usually does the trick. Microwave odors can be removed by placing some lemon slices in a bowl of water and putting on high for a few minutes. We are not against the self-cleaning ovens that burn out grease and grime. The catalytic function on ovens made in the last 10 years work well, do take an unreasonable amount of energy, but on the other hand you won’t use toxic chemicals to melt away the grime.

Do make sure to leave the home and open the windows if you are using the self-cleaning option on your oven. It off-gases and the byproducts are not good for your lungs or health.

Eco cleaning bath, shower, tiles

Mix two parts bicarbonate soda to one part vinegar. This forms a thick paste that can be applied with a damp cloth. Leave this on the surface for 10 minutes then rub with a brush or sponge.

Rinsing the mix of these surfaces and down the drains will clean the drains too.

Eco clean the toilet

To clean the toilet and cistern, just sprinkle some bicarbonate soda onto a damp cloth, scrub area and then wipe with another wet cloth.

To eliminate stains in the bowl- you can place three cups of undiluted vinegar in the bowl and scrub it with a toilet brush.

Eco clean wood

Mix one part olive oil with one part lemon juice. You can rub it on furniture or apply with a spray bottle, then polish with a dry cloth.

Eco clean mildew and mould

-Prepare one part vinegar or lemon juice to one part baking powder. Apply to affected area and leave for one to two hours or even more depending on the severity of the mould or mildew. After this, it can be rinsed off.

An eco air freshener

By mixing eight tablespoons of baking soda with three drops of any essential oil, you can eliminate lots of bad odours. Just place the mix in a decorative bowl or vase.

Another option is to add a few drops to some table salt or kosher salt and aerate this mixture over a votive candle. Try calming, natural and essential oils. You can dig into our herbalist’s medicine cabinet for some ideas.

Quick shopping list for essential oils:

  1. Organic lemon oil
  2. Tea Tree Oil
  3. Organic lavender oil
  4. Bergamot oil
  5. Roman Chamomile
  6. Peppermint essential oil
  7. Rosemary essential oil
  8. Sweet basil essential oil
  9. Rose absolute oil
  10. Ylang Lang oil
  11. Ginger oil

Dusting the sustainable way

Desert areas and Middle East countries are especially dusty so it is important to develop a method that cleans the dust without moving large amounts back into the air. Try soaking your dusting rag in two parts water, two parts vinegar and two drops of lemon and oil, then wring it out and store in a covered glass jar until you need it.

Look into HEPA filters that can clean the air as well so much less of the dust from diesel fumes and building materials get into your lungs.

Eco laundry ideas

The eco friendly detergents are well concentrated and are often very economical. I have found that I need to use little to get a good wash, especially with the brands Ecover, ECOS and Eco-Friend.

For a fabric softener you can use vinegar mixed with your favourite essential oil. But fabric softeners are not really necessary and are usually full of conditioners and fragrance that irritate the skin. If you have bad stains you can soak your clothes in a bucket with some bicarbonate soda for an hour before washing.

Cleaning your clothes with warm or cold water washes are the best for the planet, along with opting to use your machines on off peak hours to avoid overloading the grid on hot or very cold days. Some places like in Canada over incentives and 50% discounts for using appliances after 7PM, so see what’s out there. Saving money, means saving time, means using your time for love, creativity and exploring nature.

Happy Cleaning, Happy Breathing!

Now, the launch of a ‘Sustainable Lifestyles’ campaign will give more than 720 women in Abu Dhabi the opportunity to learn about the environment and how they can take positive action to protect the planet.

Abu Dhabi Pioneers Concentrated Solar Thermal A/C With Chromasun

Breakthrough sustainable clean energy technology gets a field test in forward-thinking Abu Dhabi

In one of Chromasun’s first international pilot projects, the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority has arranged for the company to demonstrate its commercial solar-powered air conditioning technology,  Solar Thermal Magazine reports.

Chromasun’s unique solar thermal air conditioning system is being installed at a distribution center that manages controls and processes for the utility.

Previously the center’s office air-conditioning was supplied by conventional electric chillers. But these have significant fossil-based peak power demands on hot days. Abu Dhabi is working to green its grid to help in international efforts to prevent climate change. Solar power has zero carbon emissions, and is permanently fuel-free.

In this field-trial, Chromasun is using rooftop-scale solar thermal technology, concentrated with sun-tracking reflectors, to heat a liquid to very high heat – the same way that massive utility-scale solar thermal power plants do.

The Israeli solar thermal pioneer Luz invented the technology 30 years ago, and the formerly Luz-owned big utility-scale SEGs in California still make electricity using this type of solar thermal technology – to focus the sun with mirrors to heat a liquid. It is a proven technology and ideal technology for regions with good insolation. Already, the technology is being pioneered to boost oil field production in the Gulf.

It is the basis for at least nine Recovery Act-powered projects in the US this year. Last year, Iran inaugurated its first CSP solar power plant.

But instead of using the heated liquid to boil water to make steam to drive a turbine to make electricity, like a SEGs-type of power plant, Chromasun will use the super-heated liquid created on a rooftop to power air conditioners, in the commercial building underneath each system.

Chromasun founder Peter Le Lievre has deep experience in utility-scale solar thermal systems, having implemented the first solar thermal add-on to a fossil fired power station at Solar Heat and Power, and as the co-founder of Ausra, which is building a 100 solar thermal MW plant in Jordan. He is scaling-down solar thermal technology to the commercial building market, and using it a new way, to supply air conditioning.

How Solar Thermal Air Conditioning works:

Sealed inside a protective clear cover, Chromasun puts lightweight, highly reflective aluminium mirrors to concentrate the sun’s rays between 20 to 25 times, focused on a pipe containing the liquid to be heated. The mirrors pivot in unison to follow the sun. The whole device is sealed inside a clear glass cover to protect the moving mechanism from dust and dirt and any possible objects in motion outside, from wind-driven dust and debris to birds or small animals.

The collectors are put on the roof and they focus the heat of the sun on a liquid, which gets solar heated to 175ËšC, and then sent in pipes down to the boiler room in the building, where it is used instead of electrically heated water in a double-effect absorption chiller that converts the heat coming from the panels into chilled water to run through the air conditioning system.

Chromasun already has a 16,000 square-foot assembly plant in San Jose that can put together 10 megawatts of concentrated solar thermal systems per year.

Blondes Have More Fun Composting

0

atar friedmanMaybe blondes really do have more fun, and more fun composting too.

It’s easier to get Israelis excited about blondes than about composting, but if you get their eco-attention using a blonde?  That’s a different story.  Atar Friedman, a beautiful young Israeli blonde with a mission, has been trying to get Israelis more conscious about waste and composting.  Now the face of a new garbage sorting campaign, Friedman says that she’s “very proud to be the dumb blonde who models garbage.”  Blending glamour with garbage, maybe Friedman has got what it takes to improve the country’s increasing trash problem.

Book Review: Animals in Islamic Tradition and Muslim Culture

animals in islamArwa reviews the book by Richard C. Foltz, Animals in Islamic Tradition and Muslim Culture, Oneworld Publications

Following the controversy during Eid Al-adha and allegations of animal mistreatment in Egypt, I found myself questioning how my faith which teaches compassion towards animals could become so inextricably linked to clear animal abuses.

Islam, despite what many state, does teach compassion towards every single animal- even dogs and pigs which face so much stigma in the Muslim world. In an effort to educate myself more about my faith and arm myself with information against those who justify those abuses- I did what journalists do best. I did some research. I stumbled across Richard C Foltz’s book during my search and his book instantly won points by have a title which recognised the difference between Islamic teachings and Muslim culture. In fact, it turned out to be a little gem of a book and even had some interesting things to say about Islam and the environment!

Israel Well Positioned to Meet Growing Gulf Need for New Water

0

The thirst for water in an arid region means embracing waste water recycling

Altogether the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman are projected to need to spend US$60 billion on expanding waste water collection and treatment capacity over the next six years, according to international strategy firm Booz & Co speaking to Middle East Utilities.

Saudi Arabia alone is on track to become the third largest water reuse market in the world after the United States and China, says Walid Fayad, partner at Booz & Co.

Israel’s Leviathan Gas Find Will Have Widespread Repercussions for World Power

8

The gigantic $45 billion Leviathan gas find tosses out Israel’s previous relationship with the world. The biggest deep-water gas find in a decade has enough reserves to supply Israel’s gas needs for 100 years.

Oil and gas exploration that might benefit Israel has long been stymied by political fears. Because of worries about antagonizing current relationships with Arab partners, Big Oil had till now avoided the possibility of any political blow-back from finding any potential oil and gas in Israel.

So it took a relatively minor company, Noble Energy, to make the Leviathan gas discovery off the shores of Israel.

21 Years After US, Turkey Finally Bans Asbestos

3

turkey-bans-asbestosSomewhat belatedly, Turkey bans the procurement and use of asbestos throughout Turkey.

Asbestos was once considered the darling of building materials given its extraordinary resistance to heat, its absorbent qualities, and its tensile strength. Commonly used in roofing, tiles, paper production, ceiling and floor tiles, in packaging, and in gadgets, asbestos became popular in the latter half of the nineteenth century.

The trouble is, asbestos has deleterious effects on human health and on the environment. As such it finds itself on the list of materials that are known to be dangerous to humans.

Banned 21 years ago in the United States and in various stages throughout the western world, entry into the European Union also requires its prohibition.

Accordingly, Turkey has completely banned asbestos production, use, and supply.

Egypt’s Organic Sector To Get First World Regulations

0

organic-food-regulationsNew regulations in Egypt will prevent from fraudsters from falsifying inorganic food.

Organic agriculture is not so widespread in the Middle East. There are certain places in Israel that belong to the WWOOFing network, while Dubai creeps along with farms that unfortunately rely on desalination for their water. Turkey too is heading in that direction, slowly, with its Orbanic farmers market.

In Egypt, where no regulations exist to prevent it from happening, producers slap high tags on their products and call them organic or biodynamic – even when they are not. In response to complaints, the Ministry of Trade and Industry has introduced new certification regulations that should curtail this process.

Lots Of Green Challenges Ahead In 2011

Burning Coal in China

Our individual efforts to stem global warming seem mighty inconsequential when China is burning billions of tons of coal.

As we reflect back on the past year and look forward to a greener 2011, it is tempting to believe that environmental awareness is gradually and inexorably growing, as reflected in recent Green Prophet reports about recycling initiatives, solar projects, electric cars and other positive developments. Maybe that’s why it was so disappointing to read the following headlines in the Washington Post yesterday: China has seen the future, and it is coal and SUVs lead U.S. auto sales growth despite efforts to improve fuel efficiency.
