Raphael Mechoulam, discoverer of THC, CBD in medicinal cannabis. Cannabis can cure pain, but it also shows powerful effects against viruses.

Update: April 27, 2020 – a second clinical trial by another Israeli group on COVID-19 and CBD cannabis is reported here.

Israel is a medical cannabis powerhouse. And a medical powerhouse in its own right (see how Pluristem is bringing COVID-19 patients back to life). Not because people here use the natural substance more than anywhere else, but because it has been legally researched by Israeli universities for about four decades. Israel is where pioneering scientists like Raphael Mechoulam first isolated and named THC and then he did the same for CBD, which is the non-psychotropic molecule – among 80 or more – that is found in the marijuana plant. You can find CBD now available around the world and it’s useful for treating COVID-related anxiety.

Israel is one of the places where pioneering American physicians turn –- such as Dr. Alan Shackelford – when he was asked by the parents if he could treat a little girl with epilepsy using cannabis. So when I read the headlines that Israel is investigating the effects of cannabis on COVID-19 patients, I was intrigued.

We know that cannabis can create anxiety in some people, but in another whole group, probably larger, it can actually calm you down. The CBD molecule when grown in plants that have little THC, can offer the calming effect without the mind-altering THC effects.

Cannabis as anti-viral?

If cannabis is inhaled by smoking or by using a bong or vaporizer, there can be lung damage. But there are other ways cannabis can be ingested, such as an oral dose, using cannabis oil, or as edibles.

According to local TV reports in Israel, Ichilov Medical Center in Tel Aviv will begin administering medicinal cannabis to coronavirus patients in moderate condition, as part of an experimental treatment. Medical cannabis is legal in Israel, but it is not widely used in hospitals to treat patients.

The new study is investigating one of the active substances in cannabis, cannabidiol, or CBD, to see if it can slow down the inflammatory process that creates the deterioration of severe Coronavirus patients. It might be able to alleviate symptoms of the disease.

Local reports state that the study will be done across a number of wards in the central Tel Aviv hospital, and will include dozens of moderately ill patients. The study is initiated by the hospital and is currently not related to any company, it is reported.

Dr. Barak Cohen, a senior anesthesiologist and head of the Corona management at Ichilov and the research’s initiators, assured to the media: “this is a novel approach to treating some of the symptoms, using a component of the cannabis plant that is considered safe and non-addictive.”

The study is not being sponsored by any company. Barak has authored studies on cannabis in the past, most recently on the comparisons of synthetic cannabis to natural strains.

Cannabidiol (CBD) can make up about 40% of the plant’s extract, and has been researched for the treatment of anxiety, pain, cognition, and movement disorders. My friends in Canada swear by it.

Doctors are hoping to use the antiviral properties of cannabis to slow the spread of the virus.

Pain doctors in cancer wards in Israel can quickly help patients get prescriptions if a person is suffering a terminal illness but normally it takes a year or more to qualify for a license. In Toronto when my father was dying from cancer in one of the best hospitals in the world I was not permitted to treat him using cannabis. There, while Canada has legalized cannabis, the medical establishment might be long behind what Israel is doing. CBD, THC and CBD hemp products can be easily found and obtained in Canada now that cannabis is legal recreationally. But knowing how to apply these products medically is really still a big guess at best. That’s why we need medical investigators looking for trends, patterns and best dosing schedules.

On April 27, we report on a second clinical trial starting on CBD and cannabis initiated by the company Stero. Find the study here.

Renewable energy investment matchmaking platform

wind turbines
Renewable energy installations can provide round the clock energy in continents like Africa, where more than half of the people are without power. This is important for industries like gold mining, who need to use polluting diesel in offgrid locations.

Advancing the renewables-based energy transformation is an opportunity to meet international climate goals while boosting economic growth, creating millions of jobs and improving human welfare by 2050, finds the first Global Renewables Outlook released by the International Renewable Energy Agency – IRENA. They are like the United Nations for Renewable Energy and are based in Abu Dhabi.

While a pathway to deeper decarbonisation requires total energy investment up to USD 130 trillion, the socio-economic gains of such an investment would be massive, the Outlook reveals. Transforming the energy system could boost cumulative global GDP gains above business-as-usual by USD 98 trillion between now and 2050. It would nearly quadruple renewable energy jobs to 42 million, expand employment in energy efficiency to 21 million and add 15 million in system flexibility.

IRENA’s Director-General Francesco La Camera said: “Governments are facing a difficult task of bringing the health emergency under control while introducing major stimulus and recovery measures. The crisis has exposed deeply embedded vulnerabilities of the current system. IRENA’s Outlook shows the ways to build more sustainable, equitable and resilient economies by aligning short-term recovery efforts with the medium-and long-term objectives of the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Agenda.”

“By accelerating renewables and making the energy transition an integral part of the wider recovery, governments can achieve multiple economic and social objectives in the pursuit of a resilient future that leaves nobody behind.”

The Global Renewables Outlook examines building blocks of an energy system along with investment strategies and policy frameworks needed to manage the transition. It explores ways to cut global CO2 emissions by at least 70 per cent by 2050.

Green Hydrogen?

A new perspective on deeper decarbonisation shows a path towards net-zero and zero emissions. Building on five technology pillars, particularly green hydrogen and extended end-use electrification could help replace fossil-fuels and slash emissions in heavy industry and hard-to-decarbonise sectors.

Low-carbon investment would significantly pay off, the Outlook shows, with savings eight times more than costs when accounting for reduced health and environmental externalities. A climate-safe path would require cumulative energy investments of USD 110 trillion by 2050 but achieving full carbon neutrality would add another USD 20 trillion.

The Outlook also looked at energy and socio-economic transition paths in 10 regions worldwide. Despite varied paths, all regions are expected to see higher shares of renewable energy use, with Southeast Asia, Latin America, the European Union and Sub-Saharan Africa poised to reach 70-80 per cent shares in their total energy mixes by 2050.

Similarly, electrification of end uses like heat and transport would rise everywhere, exceeding 50 per cent in East Asia, North America and much of Europe. All regions would also significantly increase their welfare and witness net job gains in the energy sector despite losses in fossil fuels. However, economy-wide, regional job gains are distributed unevenly. While regional GDP growth would show considerable variation, most regions could expect gains.

Raising regional and country-level ambitions will be crucial to meet interlinked energy and climate objectives and harvest socio-economic welfare. Stronger coordination on international, regional and domestic levels will be equally important, the Outlook concludes, with financial support being directed where needed including to the most vulnerable countries and communities.

As partner of the Climate Investment Platform, launched to drive clean energy uptake and mobilise clean investment, IRENA will advance collaborative action targeted to help countries create enabling conditions and unlock renewable investment.

Transform these habits into eco-friendly habits

bike lanes tel aviv

Earth Day just passed us by on April 22 and hopefully, it sparked some interest in being more eco-friendly. All of us have habits that can be switched out for better ones, and switching those habits out for ones that are eco-friendly is no exception. Most of us go through our daily routines without even thinking about what adjustments we can make to better our planet. Perhaps, one of the most obvious changes someone could make would be to ditch the bad habit of smoking. Well-made CBD vape products can make this switch possible, and more importantly, make it eco-friendly. Let’s look more into this transformation that can be made, along with a few more.

Switch Smoking For A Vape

Did you know smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths per year? That’s a pretty hefty number, as well as a great reason to make the switch. I know you might be wondering how vaping is better than smoking? Well, have you ever walked down the street and noticed mounds of cigarette butts? Not only is this litter, but it’s filled with toxins and chemicals. The reduction of second-hand smoke is another great reason to switch to vapes because second-hand smoke is just as deadly for the bystander exposed to cigarette smoke. The idea of vapes can be just as troubling for some people due to some of the bad press that vapes have received in the past, but you just have to be able to identify reputable companies to purchase from. Vitamin E acetate is a dangerous additive that some companies incorporate into their pens.

This synthetic form of vitamin E is extremely dangerous and can lead to hospitalizations and even death in some cases. Safe companies will provide third-party lab results for their products, and you can make sure you don’t see vitamin E acetate anywhere in the ingredient list. There are so many vape options to choose from that don’t harm the environment.

Running Appliances

Did you wake up this morning and decide you were going to clean your whole house and run all your appliances at the same time? Most of us don’t intend on it, but it happens. The best time to actually run your appliances is anywhere between 7 pm until 12 noon the next day. Not only do you ease up the level of power being used in your area, but electric companies also charge more during peak hours, so this is a little insider tip to cut back on your power bill.

Grow Your Food

You don’t need acres of land to create your own garden, you can honesty make a great herb garden right on an apartment patio. Do a little research on some fruits and veggies you like to eat and see which ones fit into your capabilities. Many of us have tried to grow flowers with no success, but have you ever tried to grow fruits, veggies, or herbs? They’re actually a little easier to grow than flowers, and arguably more rewarding because you get to harvest your food and eat it! If you cook with herbs it’s always a good idea to at least have a little mini herb garden because cooking with fresh herbs is the absolute best!

planting herbs

Reading

Hopefully, some of us have developed some better habits such as reading a little more while on quarantine. It’s so easy to get caught up in a good season of Breaking Bad, or whatever else catches your attention, but picking up a book is a great source of mental stimulation. So, cut back on the power (once again) and pick up a book. How about Practical Herbs by Henriette Kress?

Water Usage

Do you ever really think about how much water we use? If you live in a place like California, water conservation is a big deal, and droughts are not uncommon. There are a few simple ways you can cut back on your water consumption such as turning off the water when you’re brushing your teeth, taking showers instead of baths, only running the washer or dishwasher with full loads—you get the idea. You can also get a bucket to collect the shower water as it warms up and use it to water your new garden! Once you start thinking about things like this, being more mindful of it, you’ll start coming up with your own ideas.

Walk or Bike

It’s understandable… sometimes it isn’t possible, but if you live in an area where things are bunched pretty close together, you should try walking or biking sometimes. Maybe on a glowing bike path like in Holland? It’s great for the environment, you get exercise, vitamin D, and you’ll be doing your part in cutting back pollution!

Conclusion

Switching out some of your daily habits for habits that are more eco-friendly like CBD oil products doesn’t have to be a daunting task. A quick google search will literally reveal thousands of eco-friendly ideas, activities, and lifestyle changes. The first step is having general interest and curiosity—now you’re really on track to make this world a better, more sustainable place!

A memorable night at the Sultan’s palace – exploring the Tidore festival

0

tidore festival Tidore: a tiny island in the Indonesian Molucca Sea and one of the last remaining sultanates in the world. Forever overshadowed by its bigger brother and long-time rival, the neighboring island of Ternate, it is known by few and visited by even less people. I first set foot there in December 2018. Little did I know I was about to have a transformative meeting and would return the next year, for one of the most culturally rich and immersive experiences of my traveling life.

A small island with a big history

While the name for most people doesn’t ring a bell, history tells us the sultanate of Tidore used to be a force to reckon with. Though only 600 square miles wide – now home to approximately 50,000 people – it was a major regional, political and economic power in the pre-colonial area. Founded in 1409, the sultanate once ruled large parts of eastern Indonesia, including Halmahera, Buru, Ambon and New Guinea. Largely funded by the spice trade, it was locked in a fierce battle for control over it with its neighbor Ternate. Dutch interference during the colonial period significantly weakened the kingdom’s control and the sultanate was abolished after Indonesia’s independence. But in 1999, the sultanate was re-established and the sultan returned to power.

Chance encounter

Nowadays, there is not much left to remind of the grand ambitions of the tiny kingdom, except for some remainders of Dutch and Portuguese fortresses that attest to the historical significance of the island. I first visited Tidore on a day-trip from Ternate – about fifteen minutes by boat – and fell in love with the mellow and friendly atmosphere. Although the sights weren’t particularly special, strolling through the small villages with colorfully painted and well-kept houses was a joy. Near the  market, I was stopped by a local man, who invited me to his family home for a cup of traditional coffee. I ended up spending a wonderful afternoon with mister Ipin, his wife Nadira and their daughter Ira. Nadira made the tastiest coffee – flavored with local spices and nuts – and mister Ipin turned out to be a passionate teacher of Tidore’s culture and history. The family ran a small homestay and I left feeling sorry I couldn’t stay longer, but promising I would be back.

Becoming a part of the family

A few months later my phone went off: I received a text message from mister Ipin, inviting me to the annual Tidore Festival. At the time I was living in Manado, in Sulawesi, located a short flight or overnight boat ride from Ternate. Not really knowing what to expect, but driven by the good memories of my former visit, I made my way back to the Moluccas. I was given a room at the home of pak Ipin’s father- and sister-in-law, who took me in as if I was a family member. This was a real homestay: not the kind that acts as a small guesthouse, but the kind where you actually become part of the family for the duration of your stay. I shared my meals with the family and whenever they had the opportunity they would come and hang out with me, or take me on trips around the island.

Meeting the local community

I was also made part of all the community activities and events the family attended. One night, I joined them to a traditional ritual in honor of a deceased friend. As soon as I entered the house where the event was to take place, I was taken along to the kitchen area, where I joined a group of chattering women. Peeking from behind a curtain with some of the other women, I witnessed an elaborate ritual of men chanting and praying. Afterwards, there was a communal meal with plenty of friendly exchanges and jokes. It was an experience unlike any other: I felt accepted straight away. I was a white western female, visiting an intimate ritual within a traditional Muslim community, but I didn’t feel like an outsider for one second. That night, inspired by the kind hospitality of the local community, I felt convinced that people from around the world can truly connect, no matter how big their differences.

A memorable evening at the sultan’s palace

The Tidore Festival turned out to be an annual celebration of the sultanate’s anniversary, featuring a week-long program celebrating local culture through traditional rituals and events. For the most impressive ritual of them all, my host family and I headed to the sultan’s palace or kraton. As we entered the palace, a circle of men was forming in the main area. Soon, the men started to sing synchronized, rhythmic chants that filled the air. As in trance, one man after the other got up and made his way to the middle of the circle. The men in the center – two at a time – repeatedly stabbed themselves in the chest with large knives. I held my breath, but to my surprise and relief the knives hardly drew any blood. A participant afterwards told me that the small wounds only itched and would be healed the next day. Until today, I have no explanation for it, other than that I had an up-close encounter with something supernatural.

Thousands of candles and crazy bamboo

The peak event of the festival was preceded by an atmospheric evening program. While walking to the event location, we passed streets lined with burning candles. At a square, people gathered around a huge bamboo construction with hundreds of candles, which were being lighted by men with long bamboo poles. By the candlelight, young men engaged in traditional games, such as bambu gila or ‘crazy bamboo’, in which two groups of men try to keep hold of a bamboo stick, while a spirit is supposedly moving it left and right. It was a magical evening, and while mister Ipin drove us home on his motorbike, with little Ira falling asleep on my lap, I felt grateful to be part of this world so different from mine for a little while.

Early morning parades and traditional dances

The next morning, the whole island woke up early for the traditional parade to the sultan’s palace. From every corner of the island, groups of people dressed in traditional attire started before sunrise on a long walk to the kraton. In every village the parade passed, new people joined, so that the line of people grew bigger and bigger. I too joined the swelling numbers and let myself take along the stream of chattering, drumming, and singing people and waving flags. At a crossroads near the palace, parades coming from all four directions met, and the large crowd entered the palace. After flag carriers ritually brought in the flags, an elaborate show featuring local dance and music took place, and the sultan – who was unfortunately sick – even made a quick appearance.

What traveling is all about

I returned to Manado feeling overwhelmed and extremely touched by the hospitality and kindness I had encountered in Tidore. While making my way back to the harbor, I teared up just a little, and realized that encounters like this are the reason I love to travel and will always continue to do so. With the guidance of mister Ipin, one week in Tidore had taught me more about local culture than I would have learned traveling on my own in a year. I got to know a world guided by traditions and rituals, where the supernatural is real, and the mystical and the ordinary mingle. I also got to know people who opened their homes and their hearts to me, and experienced a connection that bridged all the gaps between us. To me, this is exactly what traveling is all about.

International renewable org bolsters renewables in Africa

0

solar panels africa village
Renewables are perfect for Africa where more than half of all people don’t have access to clean power. Microgrids powered by renewables are the future.

With Ebola flaring up again and corona taking over our lives, Africa is more vulnerable than ever. This year starts the decade of action when we must all band together to make renewables part of Africa in every way, from domestic use like by the Israeli tech company Lumos to renewables in mining.

So this news makes us happy: The African Union Commission (AUC) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) have agreed to work closely to advance renewable energy across the continent to bolster Africa’s response to Covid-19. The two organisations will focus on innovative solutions to drive the development of renewable energy including decentralised systems, and to increase access to energy across the continent.

The cooperation aims to bolster Africa’s response to the pandemic by, inter alia, improving the ability of rural health centres and communities to deal with the health challenge using renewable energy to power critical services such as medical equipment and water pumping for improving hygiene.

Africa is home to more than two thirds of the world’s least developed countries and 600 million people currently live without access to modern energy services. Paradoxically, Africa possesses vast renewable energy potential that could cover nearly a quarter of its energy needs through indigenous renewable energy by 2030. The deployment of renewables-based solutions is, therefore, central to the achievement of universal access and a key enabler for the attainment of the aspirations of the AU Agenda 2063 as well as achievement of the UN Agenda 2030 on Sustainable Development. The two organisations will collaborate to make this possible.

During a virtual discussion, H.E. Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid, Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy of the African Union Commission and Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA agreed that a concerted and coordinated response is essential to address the energy related response to COVID-19 and noted that renewable energy offers the most plausible and sustainable response, which will continue to uplift the quality of life for millions of Africans long after the pandemic.

H.E. Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid said: “The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that energy is critical for all spheres of life and is now proving to be a matter of survival.  The African Union Commission has made major strides to advance energy development in Africa through various programmes and partnerships.  It is now even more urgent to fast track energy access efforts on the continent”.

The Commissioner went on to say, “It is time to use Africa’s enormous renewable energy resources for the benefit of the African people in response to the coronavirus pandemic.”

She called upon IRENA and AU to work together to mobilise international support, including the private sector, to provide electricity to health facilities and associated services for fighting the pandemic in Africa, especially the rural and peri-urban areas.  “It is critical that the vulnerable in society, especially women and girls, are specifically targeted in these efforts”, she added.

On his part, the IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera said: “Renewable energy can cost-effectively supply the critical power needed in Africa’s rural communities to supply health centres, facilitate the provision of clean water, support agriculture and facilitate other productive sectors.  Such measures are critical to the continent’s ability to deal with the pandemic.”

“Our response to this crisis must also promote long-term sustainable development and support for the achievement of NDCs,” continued Mr. La Camera. “The deployment of renewables is therefore a foresighted strategy to ensure a resilient future, in which no one is left behind.”

The collaboration between the AU and IRENA complements ongoing AU programmes, which include the Africa Bioenergy Policy Framework and Guidelines; Renewable energy in African island states; Development of small hydropower potential in Africa; Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility; and the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA) as well as the Strategy for integrated approach for provision of basic infrastructure in rural and remote areas of Africa.

This is in addition to other African initiatives such as Desert to Power, Coalition for Sustainable Energy Access, and the Africa Renewable Energy Initiative (AREI) – an Africa owned and led drive to scale up renewable energy – consolidating efforts from the international community to address the needs of African countries.

The AU and IRENA will also collaborate in the context of IRENA’s Clean Energy Corridors initiatives in East, West and Southern Africa focused on advancing the deployment of renewables through the creation of larger and more robust power markets encouraging cross-border trade of renewable power.

These commitments build on existing cooperation between the AU and IRENA to strengthen the enabling environment for low-carbon, climate-resilient renewable energy investment as the continent seeks to raise its renewable energy ambition.

4 Things You Need To Do While Overcoming Addiction

0

hanging out in a tree, woman on branch of large tree
We are isolating from nature, from our family and friends. This pandemic will make overcoming an addiction even harder because we don’t have all the above to help us through.

Many people don’t realize they have a problem, they keep consuming the same drugs and liquor regularly. They keep affecting the people around them and ruining their own lives as well.

But since you’re here, that means you realized you have a problem. That is a big step, but there is a long and challenging road ahead. You need to keep in mind whatever is driving you in the right direction. You need to keep working for it, no matter how hard it gets.

Here are some things you need to do while battling your addiction.

Eating a Healthier Diet

When a person is hooked on certain substances, they might be spending all their money and time consuming it. They might not be eating healthy or living like a regular person. That is why their body is probably suffering from one or multiple deficiencies.

If you have been addicted for quite some time now, then it would be best to start by incorporating better and healthier foods in your daily diet. You need to get your daily requirements of the macro compounds filled, as well as focus on the vitamins, minerals, and others.

Keeping Up With Exercise

Related to the addict’s diet, they may also be extremely unfit. Not only because of the lack of nutrients, but the drugs can also affect the physical body state. They may have lost a lot of muscle mass and barely have the strength to stand straight for a few minutes at a time.

Whether or not your physical appearance has significantly suffered from your addiction, you need to start exercising regularly to get better. You probably don’t have enough strength to start lifting weights just yet, which is why it might be more suitable to look into a variety of other forms of exercise to get better.

Changing Certain Habits

While consuming drugs and alcohol every other day, people tend to develop plenty of bad habits that are very challenging to leave behind. They might be hanging out with other addicts, taking part in illegal activity, and being wild in a bad way, among other things.

Chances are that you may be hooked on a bad habit as well. Now that you are on the road to getting better, it is essential to find healthier habits. You can take up something that makes you feel good, and surround yourself with good people who motivate you to stay clean.

Get Professional Help

Overcoming the addiction is not easy, and many people aren’t able to go through all the challenging stages of detoxification. That is why you must consider getting professional help.

The best way to do this is by going to a rehabilitation treatment center. They have a wide array of wonderful programs that can target your problems specifically and work towards getting you better.

They will take care of your eating habits and giving access to plenty of workout plans. You will also be in a safe facility, away from all temptations and the wrong crowd.

A 10x faster coronavirus test with available diagnostics lab materials

0

Naomi Habib, Safra Brain Institute
Prof. Naomi Habib is a partner in a team leading the way to a faster, cheaper corona test.

Israel is a biopharma and medical powerhouse. Earlier this week we reported on a NASDAQ traded company called Pluristem that brought dying coronavirus patients back to life and weaning off ventilation. Now, the Hebrew University from Jerusalem sends us a science breakthrough that speeds up testing results.

If you read the news you will keep hearing that we are out of reagents – the testing chemicals needed to check if someone is infected or not. Because we all can’t get tested fast and some of us return to a new normal, we continue to sit it out inside, away from work, away from our friends and families. Simply because thousands of people would be walking around sharing Covid-19 unknowingly.

The scientists at Hebrew University believe that hey have a solution that is faster and cheaper using methods that are easily found in any diagnostics lab.

Professor Nir Friedman and Professor Naomi Habib led the research. “The virus detection protocol we developed is four-to-ten times faster than the current protocol.  It’s based on magnetic beads and works both robotically and manually. The robotic protocol has already been tested at Hadassah Hospital [in Israel] and is now fully operational,” says Habib.

Testing for Covid-19 currently involves extracting RNA molecules from a patient’s mouth or nose swab sample to see whether they contain viral RNA that confirms the presence of the Covid-19 virus. The new method developed by Friedman and Habib can do the same thing, only faster.

Another advantage to this new testing method is its low price. The test relies on materials that are readily available and easy to manufacture locally, making it significantly cheaper than imported kits. Magnetic beads are the only item in the protocol that still needs to be imported from overseas. However, these beads can be recycled and used again and again.

Friedman says, “our Covid-19 test significantly reduces labs’ dependence on external factors. To date, we’ve tested hundreds of clinical samples from Hadassah Hospital and our results were identical to those found by the kits currently being used.”

The researchers’ next step is to develop a method that would allow for tens of thousands of samples to be tested simultaneously instead of the current rate of thousands of tests.  This feat would be based on genomic sequencing and the results, so far, are promising.  “We’re encouraged by preliminary—and positive indications—that this method will work,” added Friedman.

To complete their tests, Habib and Friedman have teamed up with 15 researchers and lab students from the University.  “It’s very moving to see a large group of researchers so dedicated to finding a solution to our current crisis, one that will get Israel—and hopefully the rest of the world—back to normal,” said Habib.

The research team includes Dr. Ayelet Rahat Dr. Masha Adam, Alon Chapelbaum, Dr. Ronen Sadeh and Dr. Agnes Kloschendler, along with two robotics experts, Dr. Uri Shabi and Dr. Moshe Cohen. The study was funded by the Caesarea Foundation.

Stem cell drug from Pluristem brings dying covid-19 patients back to life

3

yaky yanay from Pluristem holding a treatment vial
You might want to thank this guy. Pluristem’s stem cell treatment helps covid-19 critically ill to wean off ventilators. The placental stem cell treatment helps a person regenerate damaged tissue. Early evidence suggests the drug can work as prevention as well.

For the elderly and the infirm getting a corona virus COVID-19 diagnosis is like a death sentence. As the world sits at home with baited breath waiting for herd immunity or a vaccination, an Israeli company called Pluristem might have the cure. In a fast-tracked clinical trial running in Israel 100% of critically ill patients (a group of 7) survived Covid-19, while more than half improved and are now weaning off of ventilators.

The Israeli medical company Pluristem Therapeutics (Nasdaq:PSTI)  founded in 2001, has announced that its stem cell therapy treatment, using placental stem cells, has been successful in its preliminary trials on patients who are severely ill with coronavirus.

The trials were able to proceed quickly based on fast-tracking laws in cases of compassionate use. The Pluristem’s stem cell treatment called PLX was applied to critically ill people facing organ failure. The company already has a drug in the pipeline to treat radiation sickness and has worked with NASA to solve long duration space travel.

In the trial in Israel, Pluristem’s placental expanded cells (called PLX) were able to scale back a severely overactive immune system response that causes pneumonia and untimely death by COVID-19. The company’s treatment stimulates the body to regenerate its own cells. While the study is young and the PLX treatment was used on only 7 patients who were suffering from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, the future looks very bright for the company and for us.

The company plans on starting clinical trials in the United States and Europe as soon as regulatory hurdles allow them to do so.

There have been about 10,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Israel, with about 120 deaths. Pluristem was able to apply their novel drug treatment in three medical centers in Israel. Among the patients four demonstrated failure of other organ systems, including cardiovascular and kidney failure, indicating critical disease and an overall very poor prognosis.

“Pluristem is dedicated to using its competitive advantages in large-scale manufacturing to potentially deliver PLX cells to a large number of patients in significant need,” said Yaky Yanay, Pluristem’s CEO and President.

All the treated patients were considered high risk for mortality yet 100% managed to live, according to the company.  Two patients with multi-organ failure prior to treatment, showed clinical recovery in addition to the respiratory improvement.

As a next step, the company plans to apply for initiation of a multinational regulated clinical trial program for the potential use of PLX cells in the treatment of patients suffering from complications associated with COVID-19. In this regard, while Pluristem expects to continue treating patients for complications associated with COVID-19 under the compassionate use program in Israel.

PLX Cells for Covid-19 can be manufactured in large scale quantities, offering a key advantage in addressing a global pandemic. The stem cells are not culled from a live source or a patient’s own cells, but are cells grown on a 3D scaffold in the lab. The drug can be given to patients without the long and complicated process of tissue matching.

Israel is years ahead of the United States on stem cell therapies as it was pretty much an unfundable enterprise in the United States, starting with a bill that was passed in the US in 2009.

While stem cell research was never illegal in the United States, the funding-barring mechanism put into place in 2009  by Christian law that equates placental stem cell research as a sin seriously damaged any advances in that field.

Israel, as a Jewish state, does have restrictions and ethical guidelines in place, and its halachic or Torah-based laws do rule research directions. Jewish law, supported by leading rabbis believes that life in utero does not start at conception, but only at 40 days after conception. So early stage embryonic tissue may be used as a research base.

Stem cell research in Israel has not faced the same hurdles as in the US or Europe. It is recognized as potential cures and therapies in cancer, replacing or fixing damaged organs, such as in spinal cord injury, or pneumonia. Or in novel areas that mitigate animal suffering and climate change such as cultivating lab grown meat.

Israel leads the way in stem cell research over the United States and Europe per published paper, per capita.

A vaccine and a cure?

PLX cells are allogeneic mesenchymal-like cells that have immunomodulatory properties that induce the immune system’s natural regulatory T cells and M2 macrophages, and thus may prevent or reverse the dangerous overactivation of the immune system. The company has used their treatment to help a number of medical problems including radiation poisoning.

Yanay notes that the PLX cells may potentially reduce the incidence and severity of covid-19 pneumonia and pneumonitis leading to a better prognosis for the patients. This isn’t new science for the company: pre-clinical findings of PLX cells in previous animal studies shows that the treatment helps pulmonary hypertension, lung fibrosis, acute kidney injury and gastrointestinal injury which are complications of the severe COVID-19 infection.

The company hopes that  with clinical trials from hundreds of patients globally they can slow, maybe even stop the devastating damage of COVID-19.

Key highlights for those able to help fasttrack regulatory approvals:

  • All treated patients were in Intensive Care Units (ICU) on ventilators and suffered from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)
  • 100% survival rate for all seven patients
  • 6 patients completed 1 week follow up; the seventh patient was treated on April 5 2020
  • 4 of the 6 (66%) patients that completed 1 week follow up demonstrated improvement in respiratory parameters
  • 3 of the 6 (50%) patients that completed 1 week follow up are in advanced stages of weaning from ventilators

Renewables made up more than half of all new energy sources in 2019

solar energy field in ramat hanegev

Let’s keep this up post-corona and anything the world might throw at us. Renewables keep economies and communities resilient. A solar energy field in Israel called Ashalim.

The renewable energy sector added 176 gigawatts (GW) of generating capacity globally in 2019, marginally lower than the (revised) 179 GW added in 2018. However, new renewable power accounted for 72 per cent of all power expansion last year, according to new data released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

IRENA’s annual Renewable Capacity Statistics 2020 shows that renewables expanded by 7.6 per cent last year with Asia dominating growth and accounting for 54 per cent of total additions. While expansion of renewables slowed last year, total renewable power growth outpaced fossil fuel growth by a factor of 2.6, continuing the dominance of renewables in power expansion first established in 2012. Solar and wind contributed 90 per cent of total renewable capacity added in 2019.

“Renewable energy is a cost-effective source of new power that insulates power markets and consumers from volatility, supports economic stability and stimulates sustainable growth,” said IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera. “With renewable additions providing the majority of new capacity last year, it is clear that many countries and regions recognise the degree to which the energy transition can deliver positive outcomes.

2020 starts the decade of action

“While the trajectory is positive, more is required to put global energy on a path with sustainable development and climate mitigation – both of which offer significant economic benefits,” continued Mr. La Camera. “At this challenging time, we are reminded of the importance of building resilience into our economies. In what must be the decade of action, enabling policies are needed to increase investments and accelerate renewables adoption.”

Renewables accounted for at least 70 per cent of total capacity expansion in almost all regions in 2019, other than in Africa and the Middle East, where they represented 52 per cent and 26 per cent of net additions respectively. The additions took the renewable share of all global power capacity to 34.7 per cent, up from 33.3 per cent at the end of 2018.

Non-renewable capacity expansion globally followed long-term trends in 2019, with net growth in Asia, the Middle East and Africa, and net decommissioning in Europe and North America.

Solar added 98 GW in 2019, 60 percent of which was in Asia. Wind energy expanded by close to 60 GW led by growth in China (26 GW) and the United States (9 GW).

The two technologies now generate 623 GW and 586 GW respectively – close to half of global renewable capacity. Hydropower, bioenergy, geothermal and marine energy displayed modest year on year expansion of 12 GW, 6 GW, 700 MW and 500 MW respectively.

Asia was responsible for over half of new installations despite expanding at a slightly slower pace than in 2018. Growth in Europe and North America increased year on year. Africa added 2 GW of renewable capacity in 2019, half of the 4 GW it installed in 2018. A new organization called the Clean Gold Energy Alliance aims to make every new mine renewably powered by 2030. Green Prophet and the mining company Loncor – LN (TSE) in a JV with the world’s #2 gold company Barrick Gold TSE: ABX) is making that happen. More here on renewables needed in mining. And how renewables and the mining industry could save Africa.

Highlights by technology:

  • Hydropower: Growth was unusually low in 2019, possibly because some large projects missed their expected completion dates. China and Brazil accounted for most of the expansion, each adding more than 4 GW. A good idea in some instances, but expanding operations could lead to the destruction of the Nile. Some consider hydro power to be an interim solution to renewable energy.
  • Wind energy: Wind performed particularly well in 2019, expanding by nearly 60 GW. China and the United States continued to dominate with increases of 26 GW and 9 GW respectively.
  • Solar energy: Asia continued to dominate global solar capacity expansion with a 56 GW increase, but this was lower than in 2018. Other major increases were in the United States, Australia, Spain, Ukraine and Germany.
  • Bioenergy: Expansion of bioenergy capacity remained modest in 2019. China accounted for half of all new capacity (+3.3 GW). Germany, Italy, Japan and Turkey also saw expansion. This is also known as biogas. IT’s taking energy from organic sources like methane.
  • Geothermal energy: Geothermal power capacity grew by 682 MW in 2019, slightly more than in 2018. Again, Turkey led with an expansion of 232 MW, followed by Indonesia (+185 MW) and Kenya (+160 MW). Companies like Ormat, lead the way.  Their shares are up on the stock market ORA (TLV).
  • Off-grid electricity: Off-grid capacity grew by 160 MW (+2%) to reach 8.6 GW in 2019. In 2019, off-grid solar PV increased by 112 MW and hydropower grew by 31 MW, compared to growth of only 17 MW for bioenergy.

So, to make your business grow and deal with your competitors, you have to make sure that you are doing everything right.

There are countless ways to take your business to new heights. But, if you are working hard, but your direction is not the right, then you may not get the desired results. Therefore, you need to make sure that whatever you take, it is in the right direction.

Getting blogging outreach services could be an excellent and reliable way to make your business grow. I used this service because it delivered just the results that I wanted for my brand.

Here’s how blogging outreach services can help your business grow:

Increases Traffic on Your Site

To increase the traffic on your site, you need to give people a reason to keep visiting your site every now and then. The best way to give people this reason is to provide them with some quality content that can lead them back to your website through the backlinks present in the blog content.

An important thing to notice here is that you must publish quality content that can grab the attention of the reader from the very first line of the blog. It is only possible when you hire a blogger outreach service with extensive experience in the field.

Effectively Attract New Customers

Customer buying trends have also been changed since the past decade. People have so many choices in the market for a single kind of product. Therefore, it is vital to grab their attention in every possible format.

A blog is a compelling and detailed way to spread the message of your business. It allows you to engage with your potential customers thoroughly. It is a very effective marketing strategy, and it attracts new customers.

Turns Your Website into a Final Destination

If you want your customers to visit your website as the ultimate destination, then you need to provide them with something more other than services. Along with getting your blogs published on other websites, you must create a blog on your website as well.

It provides your customers with an opportunity to engage with you in their spare time. The ultimate key to produce engaging and interesting content. For example, if you own a restaurant or your product is food-related, then writing about interesting food facts would be a great way to grab the attention of the customer. If you can produce exciting and engaging blogs, then your clients will directly come to your website whenever they have spare time to read something interesting.

Spreads Awareness about Your Business

Since a blog is a great way to reach a significant number of audiences, it is the ultimate way to make people aware of your brand. Your potential client is out there looking for a suitable brand to buy the product you sell.

You need to tell that customer that you are also available and how you are better than others in the market. This way, you are creating brand awareness and spreading the message of your business at the same time.

Provides Long Term Results

Unlike other kinds of digital marketing campaigns, a blog always remains relevant. More often than not, blogs contain interesting information that the customer can use anytime they want. This way, once a blog is published containing the backlinks to your website, it can generate traffic and customers for your website for quite a long period of time.

So, if you are looking for long term results, getting blogging services is your ultimate solution.

Hacking our way out of corona, in Tel Aviv

eddy flux biodome grow food on mars
Artificial Intelligence is used in this biodome to grow bio-organic food with zero waste using the Eddy robot by flux. The idea was started at a Google Hackathon, organized by the Pears Foundation.

On Sunday April 5th, individuals and teams around the globe will participate in a virtual hackathon that addresses new global challenges that have emerged since the worldwide spread of the coronavirus. Over 2 days, the hackathon participants will suggest ideas and develop technological solutions for social and logistical problems such as:

How can we help businesses overcome this disaster? How can we help the vulnerable? How can we keep order and sanity and reduce the spread?

The Hackathon is a collaboration between the Global Resilient Cities Network (GRCN), pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality, a member of GRCN. Throughout the year, the municipality’s Resilience and Social Equality Authority advances a municipal resilience plan, which aims to reinforce municipal anchors, so that these anchors will enable the city to deal with difficult events and disasters in extreme case scenarios. Consider that this cure-like treatment from Pluristem appears to stop symptoms of covid-19. Israel leads the way in medical advances in biopharma, so there are chances for young people to step up to the plate.

The hackathon will be judged by an esteemed panel of international judges including: Lina Liakou – Managing Director for Europe and the Middle East, for Global Resilient Cities Network pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation, Eytan Schwartz – Director of Communications, Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality, Khouloud Ayuti – Co-COE, PresenTense, Piero Pelizzaro – Chief Resilience Officer and the City Lead for the H2020 Lighthouse project Sharing Cities at the Municipality of Milan, Liora Shechter – Chief Information Officer and Smart City Director, Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality,

kasbah du toubkal
At the base of Toubkal. We visited this kasbah before our hike.

North Africa may not enjoy the same popularity for its national parks as some of the other renowned spots spread across the continent, but that in no way should be a deterrent to visit. The countries which constitute a major portion of the Sahara desert are home to some of the most stunning landscapes and regions of natural biodiversity that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

So set out on a journey with us to explore these areas of lush green wetlands, rugged mountains and some of the most fascinating flora and fauna in some of the top national parks of North Africa.

Toubkal National Park, Morocco

Standing tall at 4167 metres, Mount Toubkal, set in the beautiful Atlas mountains is the continent’s highest peak outside East Central Africa and is the main feature of this extremely popular national park of Morocco. The area is ideal for nature enthusiasts and hikers looking to spend a relaxing time in this attractive heritage spot from late spring extending to late autumn.

The park is home to more than a hundred species of birds, reptiles and other mammals. Some of the remarkable animals found here are the mountain sheep. Birdlife includes the Royal Golden Eagle, the Bonelli’s eagle, booted eagle and the short-toed eagle.

While hiking, keep your eyes peeled to the ground for porcupine, mongoose, the Atlas viper and the thorny eyed gecko. Toubkal National Park certainly makes for one of the best wildlife holidays in North Africa.

Jebil National Park, Tunisia

Situated in the Sahara desert, the 150,000 hectares Jebil National Park is the largest of all in Tunisia. Consisting mostly of desert vegetation, the place is home to a large variety of wildlife which include the Barbary sheep, a species which is endemic to the region.

Other animals found here are the fennec fox, cobra, horned viper, gazele and jackals. Birds which have made this place their home are bustards, larks and ravens. The park offers a perfect opportunity to view the natural world of Tunisia as other regions of the country focus mainly on ruins and towns.

El Kouf National Park, Libya

Access to this wonderful park is limited due to the political instability in the country, else the El Kouf National Park should be on the must visit list of any tourist to Libya. Enjoying a picturesque setting just off the Mediterranean coast, the park is known for its rich flora and fauna.

Wadi Kouf cave, Libya
A cave in El Kouf National Park, Libya

Shrubs, sand dunes and limestone hills form the predominant landscape here which in turn is home to rare animals like the striped hyena, the Egyptian wolf, red fox, crested porcupine and the tiny spotted Genet. Important birds spotted here include the golden eagle, barbary partridge, houbara bustard, black and white storks, sandgrouse and a variety of waders. Hopefully with passage of time visitors will be allowed to appreciate the unique ecosystem of El Kouf.

Banc d’Arguin National Park, Mauritania

Due to its strategic location extending to the Atlantic coast, the topography of the park consists of mainly shallow waters, coastal swamps and sand dunes resulting in a contrasting desert environment. This has resulted in throwing up a unique and diverse marine zone of important natural significance.

banc d'anguin, woman at the shore
Woman at the seashore, Banc D’Anguin

The vast marshy expanses attract millions of migratory birds from places as far as Europe and Siberia. Great white pelican, greater flamingo, caspian tern, reed cormorant, eurasian spoonbill are a few of the species found here.

The park also houses a number of varieties of turtle, notably green sea turtle, apart from  the bottle nosed and humpback dolphins. The only predominant mammal found here is the Dorcas gazelle. Virtually free from tourists this UNESCO World Heritage site is a very peaceful place to visit in a country off the tourist radar. Some airlines let you book now, pay later.

Ifrane National Park, Morocco

This 500 sq km park is boundaried by the Azoru National Park on one side and few Berber villages on the other. Home to wolves, wild boar and the highly endangered Barbary macaque, Ifrane is also known for its exceptional birdlife. Some fine species include marbled teal, common kestrel and red kite. The two Ramsar wetland areas harbour brahminy ducks and common coot.

The forests of the park are pretty alluring and the region is splashed with lakes among which Dayet Ifrah and Dayet Aoua support a large colony of birds.

Ahaggar National Park, Algeria

Dominated by the lofty Ahaggar Mountain range, the massive park covers an area of almost 450,000 square kilometres and lies in the Saharan Algerian Region. Even though rainfall in this area is scanty, an excellent number of animal species, some now extinct, roamed across these volcanic landscapes. Due to its location, plants and vegetation grow abundantly here, thus making survival of animals easy in the otherwise harsh conditions of the desert.

Hoggar Mountains in English, Algeria.
The Hoggar Mountains (Arabic: جبال هقار‎, Berber: idurar n Ahaggar) are a highland region in the central Sahara, southern Algeria, along the Tropic of Cancer.

Nomadic herders have confirmed regular sightings of the critically endangered Saharan cheetah, once thought to have perished. Other important wildlife found here is the Dorcas gazelle and the endemic Barbary sheep.

Ichkeul National Park, Tunisia

Named after the lake which lies within its borders, the park is one of the most vital wetland reserves in Tunisia. A dam constructed upstream of this UNESCO World Heritage site has left the ecosystem in a balance, but thankfully conservation efforts have made it to survive.

The park forms a passage for migratory birds and ample numbers if geese, ducks, storks and flamingos make a halt here during the season.

Tlemcen National Park, Algeria

The Northwest part of Algeria is home to this park and lies near the city of Tlemcen, from where it got its name. The park is rich in biodiversity and nearly 141 species of animals have been recorded here along with almost 100 different varieties of birds, 18 reptile species and 7 amphibian types.

Historic sites found inside the park like the Beni Add caves and the Zariffet and Ain Fezza woodlands are of significant importance. The conservation efforts which have been undertaken  ensure that the flora and fauna are well preserved.

The extraordinary ecosystem has resulted in spotting exotic species such as – turtle Greek and common chameleon. Raptors make up for more than half of the bird population and migratory birds such as the white stork make up the rest. Mammals found here are forest cat, squirrels and Barbary sheep.

The large number of National Parks in North Africa are a source of food and shelter to an amazing variety of wildlife within its boundaries. This is the only place where you can witness the beauty of the harsh Sahara region and at the same time support in the conservation of some of the finest flora and fauna which manage to thrive in these extreme habitats.

Coronavirus: Report from New York City

0
Coronavirus New York City
You will never beat New York, sign on The Bonnie

Lightning’s not supposed to strike twice. But here I am.  In New York City.  America’s Ground Zero for coronavirus. And I thought that surviving an escape from my office on the 82nd floor of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 was the last time I would be part of a Ground Zero tribe. And the gods laughed.

I am so fortunate.  I’m employed in a now-devastated industry (aviation) – by an “essential” agency which means that – although social distancing means I am working out of office – my paychecks (for now) and healthcare coverage continues. I’m part of the newly defined “1%”.  I have a job, a home, and to (cringeworthingly) quote my 89-yr old mother – I have my health.  Bubbe was spot on: health is everything.

I walk my old dog in my Astoria neighborhood, passing one hundred shuttered cash-based businesses. I think of the thousands of workers now three weeks without income and I could weep.  I can survive closed restaurants and bars, I can forego a Chinese massage. I never did go for a Korean mani/pedi.  The worst impact to me is an awfully overgrown hair style now that barbers and salons are all close.

I suspect that if this continues for months  – not the weeks broadcast by my President who predicted “a beautiful Easter” – it will be the death of the American middle class (burdened by overwhelming mortgage, credit card, and college tuition debt), and God protect those in the lowest income brackets.

Coronavirus New York City
People line up on the lines to buy groceries in New York City

The few open shops – a supermarket and drug store – are restricting customer access – staging entry and controlling 6 feet gaps in each queue.  Purchase of items is also restricted – one dozen eggs, one carton of milk.

Many disregard the Center for Disease Control recommendations – I see a gang of 8 men playing basketball at a local park, and the old men who previously sat outside our Greek coffee shops still convene with cigars and newspapers, enjoying (thanks climate-change) good weather just as they’ve done for years before.

The lucky ones – older professionals in my demographic – have an option to retreat the vacant city for our vacation homes – in my case a seaside home that used to take 3 hours to drive to in congested metro traffic.  Yesterday I made the trip in 90 minutes., on a desolate New Jersey highway made famous by Simon and Garfunkel.

New Jersey Turnpike, free of cars
No cars on the New Jersey Turnpike

There’s no “counting the cars” on today’s New Jersey Turnpike.  I suspect everyone’s “gone to look for America”.  We ponder what this means for the November presidential election.

But these summer communities are not prepared to handle summer peak populations in off season, stressing police, fire protection, and hospital resources.

This post is a simple meandering of thoughts from New York.  Tell us what you are experiencing in your own zip code. Wishing all good health.  Please be safe, be kind to your neighbors, unplug from the news, and try to find something each day to make you laugh.

CBD Isn’t Working? Eight Common Reasons Why & How To Fix It

0

cannabis powder and CBD oil
We all know that cannabis products may be a greener way to mitigate pain and health problems. But what dosage and when?

The CBD compound is currently the trendiest product that is positioned as a beneficial remedy for most physical and mental diseases and disorders. Scientific studies and numerous stories from CBD users tell about CBD as a cure-all component, which encourages more people to pay attention to CBD. However, when it came to your trial, there wasn’t any miracle? You can check out some of the leading platforms like www.cbdarmour.co.uk where you will get to know how CBD has helped others. Check out the following possible reasons why CBD product doesn’t work for you before you decide to give up on CBD treatment.

Poor Quality Product

Considering the growing popularity of CBD, it seems like it is everywhere – from online brands to shelves of over-the-counter shops. The unfortunate truth is that some dishonest companies aren’t selling products that are claimed on their website or in stores. Concerning CBD, there is little to no federal regulations, and some companies take full advantage of this situation and add anything in a bottle and label it as “organic CBD”.

The best way to avoid fake products is to buy from sellers and companies that provide transparency. Next time you are planning to purchase a new CBD infused product, use these simple tips to make sure the product is high quality:

  • Certificate of analysis. Search for evidence of third-party laboratories results. Lab testing can confirm the validity of offered products and show how much CBD is in the composition;
  • False statements. Refrain from brands that claim to cure, prevent, treat or diagnose any disorders by using their products. Although CBD is a useful compound that has helped many people with various ailments, there is still not enough evidence to make such loud statements;
  • Reputable source. Opt for brands with a professional and ethical approach to their business. Research history of a company, reviews, and its reputation on the market to make well-informed buying decisions.

Wrong Dosage

The correct dosage of CBD often causes a lot of confusion. Some people can be more sensitive to CBD and would notice the first positive effects almost immediately after intake and even from a lower dose. Starting with a lower possible dosage and building up gradually is a great method to understand how much CBD is needed to achieve your goals.

However, if you are subjected to chronic or severe disease, consider consuming a higher dose. Different health conditions require different amounts of CBD, including bodyweight, CBD concentration and individual metabolism that impact the CBD dose.

Also, make sure to consult your doctor to determine the right amount of CBD considering your medical state and severity of the existing ailment.

Interaction With Prescribed Medications

CBD is usually a well-tolerated compound with a high safety profile. However, in the case of simultaneous intake, CBD can interact with specific medicaments and cause adverse effects or diminish the effects of either CBD or other medications.

CBD infused products can interfere with blood-thinning and chemotherapy drugs, sedatives, anti-seizure medications, and certain allergy medications.

Therefore, you should visit a physician or healthcare provider before using CBD if you are currently taking any prescription medication.

CBD Type

You might have seen CBD products like CBD isolates, broad-spectrum, and full spectrum goods on the market. A CBD isolate is a purified product that includes only CBD substance without other compounds naturally occurring in a hemp plant. Full-spectrum CBD products retain all cannabinoids from cannabis plants with small concentrations of the THC compound while broad-spectrum goods contain the same components but without THC.

Some people can choose a CBD isolate with peace of mind that there is no THC in the composition. However, sometimes taking pure CBD won’t be enough to relieve the chronic conditions and receive a broad range of effects. Therapeutic benefits of the whole plant are higher than using only its parts due to the entourage effect of cannabinoids.

Improper Method Of Intake

Variety of CBD forms and product types offer different methods of using CBD infused products such as ingestion, sublingual, inhalation, topically, and even as an addition to food and beverages. Each way and product provides various onset times and influences how much CBD and additional components end up in your organism to achieve the needed results.

If you choose CBD edibles, they have to go through the digestive system before hitting the bloodstream, which decreases the amount of received beneficial effects. On the other hand, if you use oil sublingually (under the tongue), this method helps to improve bioavailability and deliver CBD right into your bloodstream for fast-acting effects.

Try to experiment with the available methods of consumption to find a suitable one to relieve acute symptoms and fulfil your needs.

Unrealistic Expectations

Several CBD users believe that cannabidiol will cure all disorders and diseases. No doubt, CBD is an effective remedy with a vast amount of advantages and healing properties. It can help to manage various symptoms, including pain, anxiety, depression, inflammation, and others. However, CBD isn’t the key that can fit all the locks, and it won’t offer all the benefits you have imagined.

Severe Medical Condition

In case you have an undiagnosed medical condition or an unknown illness that CBD can’t help, such remedy isn’t a solution.

Also, these problems can get worse if you don’t take the proper medications or receive the right treatments for the illness, which is recommended by a doctor.

Giving Up Too Early

Being tolerant and consistent over time of CBD treatment is key to a full experience of the positive effects and effective relief from various diseases as well as managing chronic symptoms.

CBD works by interacting with the cannabinoid receptors of the body’s endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for essential functions and helping the organism to reach homeostasis. That’s why it can take some time, patience and consistency for the body to respond and for you to notice first improvements.

Conclusion

CBD doesn’t work for everyone equally and can’t help with every issue, yet it can be helpful in many cases. It might take some time for CBD to activate and for you to find the ideal dose.

Being tolerant and consistent over the whole time of CBD treatment can help to experience all the positive effects and receive needed relief from various diseases and chronic conditions.

With the right dosages, suitable methods of intake, preliminary doctor visit and several days, or weeks of using CBD, you are more likely to notice a difference in your system. Many medicaments work this way, and you don’t need to rush and give up on CBD after one use.

How Risky Is It To Use Public Transportation During The Coronavirus Pandemic?

woman and man wearing masks subway Japan
Can we safely move through airports and subways in corona times?

The coronavirus is spreading at a really alarming rate. There is no sign that this will stop, even if in many Asian countries the spread did slow down. Due to the current pandemic, many governments started to restrict travel. This is a normal way to tackle a pandemic but few people understand why this is the case. In order to highlight the reasons, we should talk about how risky it is to use public transportation in the current coronavirus setting.

Busses And Trains

The most common way for the virus to spread is when a person that is infected is coughing. This is when small droplets that are packed with virus content reach the air. People around the infected person breathe these in or infections happen as someone touches surfaces that the droplets landed on. Then, when the face is touched without washing one’s hand, infection appears.

The official government advice is to stay away from people, at a distance of at least 2 meters. This is why using trains and busses is very tricky. If these public transportation methods are crowded, it is practically impossible to maintain this distance.

When you travel on a bus or train that is quite empty, risks are much lower. However, factors like ventilation and the time spent on the train/bus do play an extra role. Train operating companies now run reduced services. These are offered for those that need to travel. Surfaces are more often cleaned and carriages are often checked.

Major bus operators also respond by cutting back service frequency. Better cleaning is also implemented and only those that need to travel by bus should actually use it. In London alone, over 40 tube stations were closed. This will keep growing if the pandemic continues.

Generally speaking, whenever possible, do all you can to avoid the peak transportation hours if you absolutely need to take the bus or the train.

Planes

With air travel, the biggest concern when the outbreak first appeared is that it can transport infected people from one country to another. As a result, most airlines actually suspended, rescheduled or consolidated flights. There are even airports that were shut.

Flightright, a company responsible for gaining flight cancellation compensation in value of over 300 million EUROs till now, has carefully monitored the situation. While cancelled flight compensation keeps growing due to the fact that air travel is delayed or cancelled, what is very important is to focus on health. Remember that flight cancellations only affect your wallet and there are firms like Flightright that help. Dealing with the coronavirus is much more difficult.

Flightright gives you access to the possibility of getting compensation for flights that were delayed even up to 6 years in the past. The coronavirus is not the only reason why flights are delayed or cancelled. If you had problems with any type of flight delay or cancellation, Flightright should be contacted to see what type of compensation can be obtained.

Recently, we saw the UK government advising people to always avoid non-essential travel to another country. Residents were also encouraged to get back to the country as soon as it is possible.

In the event that you absolutely need to fly, there is this belief that there is a very high possibility to be infected since you breathe “stale” air. In reality, the air that is present on a plane is of a higher quality than what you find in the average business office. It is definitely a whole lot better than on a bus or on a train.

The big problem with air travel is that there are more people standing in a smaller square feet area. This is especially the case when planes are busy. This fact increases the risk. However, the air is changed faster. This means that you are much more likely to avoid being infected if you just avoid contact with other passengers. Although it might seem illogical to some, plane travel is safer than regular public transportation methods.
