Natural remedies for ants in your home

Florida carpenter ants Camponotus floridanus

Here are some eco-friendly tips for getting rid of ants…

Try sprinkling one (or more) of these ingredients where ants enter your home and it will help keep your house ant-free this spring and summer:

Lemon juice, cinnamon, baking soda, coffee grounds, vinegar.

Diatomaceous earth which some people eat for health reasons is also a natural repellent.

And… if you mix all of the above and bake in the oven at 350 degrees you’ll get a nice cake!

Actually not, but your house will smell better than with poison.

The best trick is to keep your surfaces clean and all food in closed containers.

If there’s no food, they won’t stay.

As far back as he can remember Jack Reichert has been interested in the environment. In the second grade, he rallied all of his classmates to donate one recess a week to cleaning up litter from the schoolyard. That was the same year that a city councilman asked him to help with his campaign because of the letter Jack had written asking him to clean up Boston Harbor. Ever since Jack has followed the development of the international green conscience with anticipation and hope that one day we will treat Mother Earth with the respect she deserves and not turn her into another Giving Tree. 1. A solution of bay leaves, soaked in hot water, cooled, then sprayed on indoor or outdoor surfaces, is a clean, good-smelling insect repellent. Outdoors, a small pile of sugar placed where you don’t mind the ants may draw them away from your doorway. At worst, a mild soap solution will kill them without doing terrible environmental damage. Indoors, ants can be kept out of the honey or sugar jar by keeping the jar in a bowl of water slightly wider than the jar. But the last advice of the article is the best: sweeping away a few scouting ants from a clean surface is a lot easier than cleaning a horde from leftovers on the counter! Keep everything closed and clean.
