First up is a screening of Urban Legend – an environmental documentary by Nitzan Horovitz that was presented a few months ago at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque.

After the 50 minute film is shown, a panel discussion including Horovitz and Orli Ronen-Rotem (the CEO of the Heschel Center) will take place.  The movie will be shown on Tuesday, January 6th at 5:30 pm and is free and open to the public (RSVP required to [email protected]).

Next on the green Tel Aviv social calendar is a lecture on Thursday January 8th by Professor Robert Bornstein of San Jose State University.  The topic of his presentation is “Urban climate interactions with air quality and climate change.”

Bornstein’s research focuses on how urbanization creates new urban climates and how these new climates control the spread of air pollution.  The lecture will be in English and will take place on January 8th at 11 am.

The architects won 1st prize in the competition to design the Tel Aviv University’s (TAU) Porter School of Environmental Studies (PSES) green building.

“We will design the PSES building according to principles of green design with technologies and materials that will reduce the building’s impact on the environment,” they said.

It will be TAU’s first “green building”, and one of the first of its kind in Israel.

The building itself is expected to serve as a “living laboratory” for teaching and research on green architecture, both within the University and outside. The construction of the first phase will be completed by November 2010. Visible by the side of the highway, educators are hoping the building will draw attention to passersby.)

Much to the disappointment of her Moroccan grandmother, Karen became a vegetarian at the age of seven because of a heartfelt respect for other forms of life. (The proceeds of the newsletter went to non-profit environmental organizations, of course.) She now studies in New York. Karen can be reached at karen (at) greenprophet (dot) com.
