Upgrades can be made so earth homes are seismic resistant.

Eastern Afghanistan was struck late on September 1, 2025 by a shallow magnitude-6.0 earthquake centered in the rugged Kunar region near the Pakistani border. Officials reported at least 800+ deaths—rising to 812 in some tallies—and thousands injured, with the worst destruction in Kunar and neighboring Nangarhar. The timing at night, the shallow focus (around 10 km), and the remoteness of mountain villages amplified the toll as whole clusters of homes failed.

Rescue teams faced blocked roads and difficult flying conditions after intense rainfall in the preceding 24 to 48 hours triggered landslides and rockfalls, cutting off communities and slowing evacuations by helicopter. An officer with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs noted that saturated slopes and debris left many routes impassable.

Why so many mud-brick homes failed

Mud-brick (adobe) is ubiquitous across Afghanistan because the materials are local, low-cost, and low-carbon. But unreinforced earthen walls are heavy and brittle; when shaken laterally they can crack and overturn suddenly, especially where construction lacks ring beams, vertical ties, or quality workmanship. Earthquake engineering guidance has long documented life-safety weaknesses in unreinforced adobe and the measures that improve performance.

Rainfall made matters worse. Raw earth loses strength when saturated; prolonged rain can erode foundations and soften wall toes, while shaking then pushes already weakened walls past failure. Where houses sit on steep slopes, the same rain that undermines walls also lubricates soil and colluvium, priming slopes to slide.

Quakes often trigger slides in mountainous terrain, but exposure and damage are magnified by land-use choices. Across Afghanistan, decades of conflict and poverty have driven deforestation, unmanaged road cutting, and settlement on unstable slopes—factors known to reduce slope stability and raise landslide risk. Reports and assessments highlight extensive forest loss in the northeast (including Kunar and Nuristan), widespread land degradation, and the role of road benches and slope undercutting in failures.

Earthen construction can be made significantly safer with well-known, low-tech improvements—without abandoning the sustainability advantages that make it attractive. International guidance specific to Afghanistan and to earthen buildings more broadly points to solutions that local masons and communities can apply with training and modest materials.

How to build back safer—while staying sustainable

Start with the site. Avoid active gullies, landslide scars, and steep toes of slopes; set houses back from cut slopes and stream banks; provide perimeter drains and raised plinths so foundations stay dry. Simple slope-stabilizing works (such as properly designed cut slopes and gabion retaining where essential) reduce local landslide risk.

Tie the structure together. A continuous bond (ring) beam at wall tops, laced to vertical elements, helps walls act as a unit. Buttresses or pilasters at corners and long wall runs, improved connections at wall intersections, and light, well-anchored roofs limit out-of-plane wall failures. Even cane, timber, or welded-wire mesh embedded in earthen walls can add crucial tensile capacity.

Stabilize the earth. Where budgets allow, stabilized earth mixes (with lime or other binders appropriate to local soils) improve moisture resistance and strength. Good soil selection and compaction, consistent lift heights, and high-quality plaster with fiber reinforcement limit cracking and water ingress.

Many at-risk homes can be upgraded in place: add ring beams and corner stitching; “wrap” walls with mesh and new plaster; stitch cracks; improve foundations and drainage; and strengthen openings with lintels and jambs. UN-Habitat’s post-disaster housing guidance emphasizes that staged, low-cost retrofitting can save lives quickly.

Learning from regional vernacular—without romanticizing risk

Responsible rebuilding can draw on the region’s deep lineage of climate-wise architecture while meeting seismic realities. Readers curious about earthen design lineages can explore our coverage of Hassan Fathy’s New Gourna, Fathy’s people-first design philosophy, and Nader Khalili’s earth-bag “Superadobe”, alongside contemporary examples like sandbag domes and Cal-Earth projects. Vernacular cooling methods—from Iran’s windcatchers (bādgir) to modern riffs on mashrabiya—demonstrate passive comfort strategies that also reduce operating carbon.

Across North Africa and the Middle East, long-lived earthen settlements like Ghadames in Libya, Syria’s beehive houses, and desert hospitality built around qanat water systems show how form, orientation, and thermal mass serve people and climate—knowledge that can be paired with seismic detailing rather than discarded.

For those exploring resilient off-grid typologies, see our primers on Earthships and this earlier guide on how they work, as well as practical accounts of earth-bag homes and concise principles of sustainable architecture. For a lighter take on low-tech cooling ingenuity, even Afghan taxi “windcatchers” have inspired DIY adaptations for heat resilience. Read that here.

The September 1 earthquake was a geologic shock compounded by saturated slopes and decades of environmental pressure. Unreinforced mud-brick failed catastrophically, but earthen homes do not have to be death traps. With careful site selection, drainage, ring beams and ties, better detailing around openings, and pragmatic retrofits, communities can keep the carbon savings of earth while gaining the life-safety benefits of modern seismic practice. The science and practical manuals exist; the challenge is organizing materials, training, and support to deploy them quickly and fairly in the mountains where they are most needed.

A new UN report shows that nearly 1.4 billion hectares of land (just over 10 percent of the total global land area) are already impacted by salinity, with an additional one billion hectares at risk due to the climate crisis and human mismanagement. Soils became saline from water overuse. Aquifers become brackish and precipitation that is lacking cannot replenish the natural balance back to the soil, making them unsuitable for farming. This Saudi Arabian company Iyris is working to solve agriculture on brackish (salty aquifers and land).

So who are the worst-affected?

Today, 10 countries: Afghanistan, Australia, Argentina, China, Kazakhstan, Russia, the United States, Iran, Sudan, and Uzbekistan account for 70 percent of the world’s salt-affected soils.

The Global Status of Salt-Affected Soils report was presented today during the International Soil and Water Forum 2024 in Bangkok. The event discussed an action plan for halting and reversing soil degradation and water scarcity.

Excessive salinity reduces the fertility of soils and severely impacts environmental sustainability. In the countries most affected by this issue, salinity stress can lead to crops yield losses – such as rice or beans – of up to 70 percent.

Related: are US aquifers damaged beyond repair?

This comes at a time when there is an urgent need to boost food production to feed a growing global population.

The report estimates the area of salt-affected soils at 1 381 million ha (Mha), or 10.7 percent of the total global land area. It further estimates that 10 percent of irrigated cropland and 10 percent of rainfed cropland are affected by salinity, although uncertainty remains high due to limited data availability.

Models of global aridity trends indicate that, under the existing trend of temperature increase, the affected area may increase to between 24 and 32 percent of the total land surface. The vast majority of aridification is expected to occur in developing countries.

The drivers of salinisation are both natural and induced by humans

The climate crisis is increasing aridity and freshwater scarcity. Rising sea levels are projected to place more than one billion people in coastal zones at risk of progressive flooding and salinisation by the end of the century. Additionallly, global warming is contributing to salinisation through the thawing of permafrost.

Inadequate agricultural practices also play a significant role. These include irrigating crops with poor-quality water, inadequate drainage, deforestation and the removal of deep-rooted vegetation, excessive water pumping in coastal and inland areas, the overuse of fertilisers, de-icing agents, and mining activity.

Strip coal mining

Global freshwater use, in particular, has increased sixfold during the last century, contributing to groundwater salinisation due to the overexploitation of aquifers for irrigation purposes.

Call for action

Since salt-affected soils account for at least 10 percent of land, their sustainable management is crucial to meet growing food demands. The report offers a series of strategies for managing salt-affected soils sustainably. Mitigation strategies include mulching, using interlayers of loose material, installing drainage systems and improving crop rotations.

Related: This sweet pea is smart when choosing a bacterial partner

Adaptation strategies include breeding salt-tolerant plants (such as halophytes, which flourish in mangrove swamps, tropical sand and cliff shorelines, and even salt deserts) and bioremediation – using bacteria, fungi, plants or animals to remove, destroy or sequester hazardous substances from the environment.

By highlighting the critical link between sustainable soil management, water quality, and food production, “the report outlines strategies for the recovery of agricultural salt-affected soils, including emerging fields like saline agriculture and salinity bioremediation,” Lifeng Li, Director of FAO’s Land and Water Division, and Jorge Batlle-Sales, Chair of the International Network of Salt-affected Soils (INSAS), wrote in its Forward.

Consequences of drought in Iraq

The report also calls for a legal framework at the national and international levels to safeguard natural saline ecosystems and ensure the sustainable management of agricultural soils under irrigation, particularly in areas at risk of salinisation. The main goal is to protect productivity, quality, and overall soil health, ensuring food quality and quantity for future generations.

Did you know women in Afghanistan got the right to vote before women in countries like USA, France, Ireland, UK and Sweden? It was one of the first reforms King Amanullah and Queen Soraya put into action, after declaring Afghanistan’s independence in 1919. The young Royal Couple were eager and enthusiastic to build their new nation; a nation where women should be equal to men. With the Queen as Minister of Education; secular schools for girls and boys were built, also a hospital for women in Kabul and a theatre.

Who was Queen Soraya?

Queen Soraya Tarzi of Afghanistan was born on November 24, 1899 in Damascus, Ottoman-ruled Syria and she played a significant role as the Queen of Afghanistan from February 28, 1919, to January 14, 1929. She was the daughter of Asma Rasmiya and Mahmud Tarzi, a prominent intellectual and politician advocating for the modernization of Afghanistan. From the Pashtun Barakzai tribe, Queen Soraya received her education from her forward-thinking father, setting the stage for her future as a trailblazer.

The Tarzi family’s return to Afghanistan coincided with the ascension of Amanullah Khan to the throne in 1919. Amanullah Khan’s father, Amir Habibullah Khan, had called upon Afghan exiles to return to their homeland. It was during this time that Queen Soraya met Amanullah Khan and they were married in 1913. This union marked the beginning of a powerful partnership that would shape the destiny of Afghanistan. Queen Soraya, unlike her predecessors, emerged as a true partner to her husband.

As King Amanullah Khan led the nation through a period of transformation, Soraya stood by his side at various events, from national gatherings to hunting parties and cabinet meetings. Notably, she broke new ground as the first Muslim wife to appear publicly with her husband.

Her influence extended beyond Afghanistan, capturing the attention of the entire Muslim world. In 1928, Queen Soraya received an honorary degree from Oxford University, highlighting her global recognition and the respect she garnered in academic circles. Despite her achievements, the rapid modernization efforts spearheaded by the monarchy faced resistance in more traditional provinces.

Fearing rebellion, King Amanullah Khan made the difficult decision to abdicate, leading the royal family into exile in Rome, Italy. Their last daughter alive, Princess India, daughter of King Amanullah Khan and Queen Soraya, died at 94 in 2023 in Rome. If you look around a Rome you may find the grand-children of King Amanullah Khan and Queen Soraya.

Princess India, the youngest daughter of the Afghanistan royal family who died in 2023

Queen Soraya continued her advocacy for women’s rights and education during the exile, remaining a compassionate and dedicated figure. Her efforts, however, were overshadowed by the challenges faced by the modernization initiatives in Afghanistan. The queen passed away at the age of 68 in Rome, leaving behind a legacy of progressive ideals and dedication to her nation.

Today, Queen Soraya Tarzi is remembered as a pioneering queen who played a crucial role in Afghanistan’s journey towards modernization. Her burial in the Bagh-e-Shaheed mausoleum in Jalalabad, alongside King Amanullah Khan, serves as a reminder of their enduring impact on Afghan history.

This is in stark contrast to Asma al-Assad, the wife of Syria’s dictator Bashar al-Assad. Asma al-Assad, from London, England, is known for being the Queen of Captagon.

Millions of Afghans had fled to Pakistan over the years as refugees – some from since the Taliban takeover in 2021, many from decades before. They have built homes and lives in Pakistan, some homes built from mud with their own hands, and believed they would be welcomed to stay, live and continue working in the Muslim-majority country of Pakistan. This past October, according to the BBC, Afghan refugees have have been told it’s time to return to Afghanistan.

Pakistan is sending them back to the Taliban terror group, of which they are terrified, and is bulldozing mud homes that Afghan refugees have built over the years.

“I am very sad about leaving my house. I can’t express in words the pain I felt leaving it. Our house was made of mud, and we built it ourselves. I planted many trees there. My neighbours and friends were in tears [when I left] – It’s the cruel government that is making us leave,” says Abdullah, who has a family of 20 people all born in Pakistan, while speaking to the BBC.

Pakistan is conducting a nationwide return of Afghans and others who they say are in the country illegally. A decree was issued at the beginning of October this year that some 1.7 million Afghans must return to Afghanistan. Pakistan has seen an increase of terror attacks, of which they are linking to Afghans. But they are collectively punishing all Afghans for any Taliban involvement.

The United Nations and its aid agencies in Afghanistan posted a message on Tuesday that they urgently need funds to provide “post-arrival” assistance to hundreds of Afghan families returning from neighboring Pakistan daily to avoid arrest and deportation.

“More than 60% of arrivals are children,” a UN coordination agency said in a statement. “Their condition is desperate, with many having traveled for days, unclear of where to return to and stranded at the border.”

The Pakistani government, in early October, ordered the deportation of all foreigners without legal documents, including 1.7 million Afghans, warning those who remained in the country beyond November 1 would be arrested and expelled to their countries of origin.

According to the AP those that leave Pakistan come with nothing because all their property was seized at the border crossing from Pakistan. There is no food, housing, toilets on their return.

Arshad Malik, country director for Save the Children, said those returning are coming back without education documents, making it difficult for them to continue their learning, as well as lacking the local Afghan languages of Dari and Pashto because they studied Urdu and English in Pakistan.

He warned that child labor in Afghanistan as well as their involvement in smuggling are likely to increase due to poverty as most returning families were among the poorest migrants in Pakistan.

“Smuggling at Torkham by children was one of the concerns from the past, so the involvement of children in smuggling and illegal goods’ transfer will increase,” Malik said.

According to the UN, Afghans make up one of the largest refugee populations worldwide. There are 2.6 million registered Afghan refugees in the world, of whom 2.2 million are registered in Iran and Pakistan. Some are in the United States, and some are in Europe. According to Canada’s CBC news Canada has welcomed 30,000 Afghan refugees recently.

Another 3.5 million people are internally displaced, having fled their homes searching for refuge within the country. In light of the rapidly deteriorating security situation since the Taliban took over in 2021, the number of people fleeing will likely continue to rise. Meanwhile, the Taliban is visiting Iran looking to cooperate.

The Taliban returned to power in 2021 after capturing Kabul and overthrowing the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, ending the 2001–2021 war. In September 2021 the Taliban re-established the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. The Taliban government remains internationally unrecognized.

Update Nov 13, VOA reports they can stay until December.

Glow bacteria activated to sniff out nitrogen oxide, a gas emitted from old landmines

Buried landmines left and forgotten from wars and conflict of the past maim women, children and men alike. All sorts of technological solutions have been proposed to clear landmines from the Middle East, and years ago we reported on how Egyptian scientists proposed bacteria to do do just that.

A solution is badly needed as 20% of the world’s land mines are planted in Egypt, where they have killed or maimed a total of more than 7,000 people in the last 30 years. They are scattered in the western desert and Sinai and pose an enormous impediment to development as well as considerable risks to animal and human safety. In Cambodia they employ an award-winning rat to sniff out landmines:

Magawa is a Tanzanian-born African giant pouched rat who has been trained by the nonprofit APOPO to sniff out explosives. With careful training, he and his rat colleagues learn to identify land mines and alert their human handlers, so the mines can be safely removed.

A standout landmine sniffer

Even among his skilled cohorts working in Cambodia, Magawa is a standout sniffer: In four years he has helped to clear more than 1.5 million square feet of land – an area about the size of 20 soccer fields. In the process, he has found 39 land mines and 28 items of unexploded ordnance.

Globally about half a million people around the world are suffering from mine-inflicted injuries, and each year an additional 15 to 20,000 more are injured or killed by these devices. More than 100 million such devices are still buried in over 70 countries.

The major technical challenge in clearing minefields is detecting the mines. Where are those menacing objects just under the sand? Maybe trees have grown around them? The technologies used today are not much different from those used in World War II as shown the classic film The English Patient, requiring detection teams to risk life and limb by physically entering the minefields. There is a critical need for an efficient solution for the remote detection of buried landmines and unexploded ordnance.

Researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have updated existing research in researching engineered glow bacteria from E.coli to help armies and humanitarians with the task and report their findings in New Biotechnology. A couple of years ago they published similar research in Nature Biotechnology. There they offer a system combining lasers and bacteria to remotely map the location of buried landmines and unexploded ordnances.

Biosensors activated: Smells like grenade

The system is based on the observation that all landmines leak minute quantities of explosive chemical gas, which accumulate in the soil above them and serve as markers for their presence. The researchers molecularly engineered live bacteria that emit a fluorescent signal when they come into contact with these specific type of gas. This signal can be recorded and quantified from a remote location.

This bike path in Holland uses glow in the dark bacteria to light the way

How do they do it? The bacteria are covered in small beads, which are scattered across the surface of a test field in which real antipersonnel landmines were buried. Using a laser-based scanning system, the test field was remotely scanned and the location of the buried landmines was determined. This appear to be the first demonstration of a functional standoff landmine detection system.

“Our field data show that engineered biosensors may be useful in a landmine detection system. For this to be possible, several challenges need to be overcome, such as enhancing the sensitivity and stability of the sensor bacteria, improving scanning speeds to cover large areas, and making the scanning apparatus more compact so it can be used on board a light unmanned aircraft or drone,” said Prof. Shimshon Belkin, from the Hebrew University, who was responsible for genetically engineering the bacterial sensors.

Egyptians diffuse bombs with bacteria

Over in Egypt, the researchers also proposed a biological system for removing landmines by degrading them. By activating the bacteria that will attack the gas emitted from landmines.

Their biological solution involves three stages: detecting the mines, corroding its iron case, and then neutralizing its explosive power.

Aresa Biodetection, a company from from Norway, designed the first phase of the study in March, 2004 by creating a strain of mustard plant called Arabidopsis thaliana that turns red in the presence of nitrogen oxide that leaks from land mines.

Researchers hoped to spray seeds from an airplane with help from the air force.

The next phase of the then proposed idea involved spreading bacteria that will eat away at the iron casings so that the trinitrotoluene (TNT) gas will be released, but Laurel Anne Hill, moderator of the Minds Clearing Landmines, questioned whether Egypt’s land mines have iron casings.

The final stage would entails planting plants such as tobacco or sugar beet that absorbs nitrogen, which the Egyptians claim will finally deactivate the mines.

Landmine detection for the birds?

But Richard Butler, program Managing of Halo Trust which specializes in disarming hazardous war debris told the paper back in 2012 that birds will eat the seeds. Researchers countered by claiming that the area of northern Egypt where they plan to test the technology does not have a lot of birds.

Looking further into the Egyptian idea, it’s not clear whether the solution came to light. But there are loads of others for inspiration, like the mine detection boot. And of course Afghani dreamers like came up with this idea: artistic mine sweepers.

Muslim women face varying amounts of oppression from men depending on where they live. In some regions like Lebanon, Turkey, Morocco, Israel and the UAE, women are relatively as free as the men to drive, work — and yeah work out. While some women may dream of going to a post-workout Starbucks in Lululemon hot pink workout pants – in Afghanistan women are fighting for the right to work out at all.

In a post-Taliban city of Kahandar, Afghanistan Muslim women are sneaking into a new gym to secretly work out. Though I am not sure how secret that may be now that the story was covered in the New York Times.

Some women say they faced depression and health problems and felt joining the gym – founded by a women’s rights activist Maryam Durani (who survived two suicide bombings and death threats) was the only thing they could do for their well being.

Even Muslim women walking around outside in certain villages in the Bedouin society in Israel is not considered acceptable. So given the restrictions there aren’t a lot of creative ways for every Muslim woman to exercise. I have noticed a growing number of Muslim women walking in conservative workout gear in Jaffa, something I hadn’t seen let’s say 5 years ago. So times are changing, even in Afghanistan. And while women in America fought to wear pants in the 1930s, Afghani women are fighting for the treadmill.

The gym was started last year in a basement, guarded by security, and away from prying eyes.

While there is a health club for women in the city of Kabul, some areas like Kandahar are extremely conservative.

In my city the Muslim women enjoy a day at the gym every other day of the week at the Jewish Arab Community Center, which is sensitive to Muslim modesty needs. That’s women on one day, and men on the other. There is a beach in North Tel Aviv which operates for the same reasons one day men, one day women, but for Orthodox Jewish families who practice similar modesty laws by choice.

I support any society that wants to be modest, but not the ones enforcing the rules that clearly dehumanise others.

In Bedouin towns in Israel such as Rahat women are not allowed to have free movement including going to work, and walking around the village, so it really depends more on village and town customs, and how men from the families enforce their religious observance, more than a country-wide oppression.

Over in Afghanistan social media posts are calling the gym ‘a house for whores, so women can make themselves look better for men’. Women who visit the new gym have been threatened outside and hit with stones and death threats should they return –– a barbaric response to a basic human need to feel fit.

We need a little more Rumi

Even though the Taliban have left the city the women face the same control by men exerted over them as though the terror group never left, they say.

Afghanistan wasn’t always so repressive towards women. Neither was Iran. Repressive and oppressive regimes have turned both countries into backwater states, with barely a hint of their former selves.

My husband’s great-grandfather was born in Balkh, previously Persia and now Afghanistan, the same town where Rumi, a Muslim Sufi came from. I consider Rumi to be one of the world’s biggest spiritual guides, teaching humility, love for nature, love for god. Years ago his town and region was a mystical and cultural magnet from which the West met the East in much more than trade of goods, but where spiritual ideas looking for the truth and god collided.

Sadly the god of the bullies has taken over and we need to help the women in these impoverished places rise up – one sit up at a time. And remember even progressive-looking women can be married to despots. Read our story about Bashar al Asad’s London-born wife Asma al Asad. And the fiasco with Vogue.

Fuel progressive thinking, and read more stories from Afghanistan and Iran

The Skateistan skateboarding school first established in Kabul shelters girls and street kids from Afghanistan’s harsh realities. Since then, it has been so successful, the non-profit NGO has established two more locations.

Many do-gooders go to countries like Afghanistan, where culture prohibits girls from certain activities common in the west, in an effort to save them, but Australian skater Oliver Percovich took his mission one step further by consulting with the local community and government to establish a facility that fits in with the prevailing cultural ethos.

Although girls are not permitted to ride bicycles in Afghanistan (like Saudi), skateboarding is considered a perfectly modest activity.

So when Percovich first showed up on the streets of Kabul with three skateboards and found himself surrounded by happy faces eager to learn what to do with them, he faced few obstacles upon opening a skateboarding school.

“I always like to go high on the ramps,” said Hanifa, a 14 year old Afghan skater. “When I’m up there I feel free, like I’m flying. I like that feeling a lot.”

In fact, the Afghan National Olympic Committee donated the 5,428 square meters of land on which the first school was built, though certain cultural exigencies have to be observed, such as keeping girls and boys classes separate, and girls have to be instructed by females only.

In addition to teaching skateboarding, the facility offers educational classes, including environmental science, so that children between the ages of 5 and 18 are developing their minds along with their confidence and physical dexterity.

It is the first international development initiative to combine skateboarding with educational outcomes, according to its website.

Several years down the road, Skateistan has uplifted hundreds of children. Roughly 40 percent of them are girls, and 50 percent of them are either street kids or refugees. And after experiencing such great success in Kabul, they opened two more branches – first in Cambodia and most recently in Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan’s fourth largest city.

They have also established a grassroots street-level program in Pakistan.

“The students themselves decide what they want to learn – we connect them with a safe space and opportunities for them to develop the skills that they consider important,” according to Skateistan.

Since many of the children live in dangerous areas, the school even provides transport to ensure they are able to attend classes safely. Even so, a few children were once killed in a bombing attack, underscoring the devastating context in which this beautiful program uplifts our precious youth.

Three of them were related to the mayor of Drumbak village, where the incident took place.

Fishing with grenades might sound like a strange way to have fun, but it is common practice in Afghanistan, Qasim Hamayoun, an official with the National Environmental Protection Agency, told the paper.

Sometimes people will use electricity to stun their dinner – I’ve seen men fish with live wires in remote Vietnamese villages, so this crude technique is not restricted to Afghanistan.

The policemen were fishing on one side of the Larkhab River in Northern Afghanistan when one of them, the son of a powerful warlord, threw a grenade that landed amid a group of children who were playing 50 yards away – on the opposite bank.

Six boys were killed immediately and another boy and a girl were wounded.

“General Andarabi, reached by telephone, confirmed that his son was being held in connection with the episode, but maintained that the children had accidentally detonated a piece of unexploded ordinance, and that his son was not on duty at the time,” writes Rod Nordland.

The Mayor, meanwhile, said the children were killed “like birds.”

In Cyprus, Egypt and Lebanon and other countries in the Middle East, that’s no idle comment. Birds (and other wildlife like wolves and antelope) are killed indiscriminately – sometimes as many as one million – for either a delicacy, in the former’s case, or even natural viagra.

And – as is true in Baghlan Province, where the environmental protection agency has been unable to persuade the local populace to stop using grenades and rockets to fish – nobody is serious enough to police the issue.

General Andarabi has promised that his son will be attended to in accordance with the law of Afghanistan, and that he will support whatever the government deems necessary.

There are many ways to fund terror, and one way is by consuming opium or heroin: Opium production in Afghanistan is seeing record increases for the third year straight, reports the United Nations.

This is because foreign military have started leaving the country and as they do drop Afghani farmers back into the hands of the Taliban.

Poppy production started going down starting in 2008 when there were eradication (burning opium crops) and incentive efforts to get Afghani farmers to switch to other kinds of crops.

But with the Taliban insurgents returning to the provinces they are now supporting opium farmers’ return to the valuable cash crop.

And when we say support, we mean with arms and guns. The Taliban actively fight government officials who try to eliminate poppy fields.

Prices this year range from $350 to $440 a pound.

Despite the religious prohibition, opium and heroin are not just a problem in the west. The drugs are also used by Afghanis, and opium is also heavily consumed by Iranians. This leads to a broad range of societal problems which we are sure readers are aware of.

For the Afghani farmers in the southern Kandahar and Helmand provinces, alternative crops to poppies which form the derivative of opium, do not compare. Farming wheat leaves them hungry, while opium creates a multi-billion dollar business, and the Taliban of course get their cut.

Someone who can help the Afghani farmers find a more productive and sustainable crop might very well earn the Nobel Prize. Maybe help them switch to medicinal marijuana?

Afghanistan is currently the world’s largest producer of opium, and it supplies about 75 percent of the global market.

Sometimes graffiti can be seen from space. In Tunisia it graces the country’s tallest minaret. In Lebanon, they are making green graffiti for the city streets. And Egyptians have converted military barriers into trompe l’oeil streetscapes. Afghan artist Malina Suliman finds her inspiration in southern Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban and one of the most dangerous places in the world. She aims to change the cultural environment through sculpture and painting that depicts the challenges of her war-weary generation.

Born and raised in Kabul, Suliman moved to Pakistan in 2007 to study with Art Council Karachi. She returned to Kabul and its nascent art scene, joining local art association Berang. The group works to promote the arts in her deeply conservative hometown.

“Many people had never seen an art installation. Some were offended and others were hurt because they’d experienced [he pain of the subject matter] before,” Suliman said to Al Arabiya, speaking of her painting “War and Chaos” which depicts the aftermath of a suicide bombing.

Suliman’s artwork is drawing attention in the Afghan capital, and internationally. Last year, she was invited to President Hamid Karzai’s palace: he’s also from Kandahar.

She describes her untitled painting of birds flying above the mountains as, “symbolic of how we rise to see a world beyond the mountains that surrounds us when we are educated.”

The image above is a sculpture she created of a child missing a leg. She says on her website, “Children in Afghanistan are often forgotten by their families or just left as victims to fend for themselves so I wanted to capture their pain in the sculpture. But really the message I wanted to get across was that nothing is forever, and as Afghans we are reminded of that daily. We’re constantly in fear that today might be the day I fall, today may be the day I die.”

Her exhibit in Kandahar, where the Taliban and tribal elders dominate public opinion, was the first in three decades. She drew a mostly male crowd, including Kandahar governor Tooryalai Wesa. “I was taken aback by her work. I had only seen great art abroad, but never here,” Wesa told Reuters. “I hope it persuades more women to do the same.”

Thirty years of war following the 1979 Soviet invasion sent Afghanistan’s art scene into hibernation. But in the past decade, with a weakened Taliban, the arts are reemerging in Afghan’s largest cities. Al Arabiya reports that the western city of Herat has art studios on offer, and northern Mazar-e-Sharif is growing a lively graffiti scene.

Modern, provocative, inexpensive to produce and widely accessible to viewers, graffiti is increasingly visible throughout the Middle East. Her art collective runs group workshops in the art form, but Suliman’s been known to venture out alone, at night, using a flashlight to illuminate her work site. Typical behavior for graffiti artists (think UK’s Banksy and Tunisian-born El Seed) but add in the Taliban and it’s a very different picture.

Last year, Suliman joined the all-male Kandahar Fine Art Association (KFAA), which opened Kandahar’s first art gallery with funding from The Ministry of Information and Culture. Her involvement has spurred more female artists to participate, but risks remain real.

“One of our biggest fears is that people will mistake us for creating art for foreigners or working with NGOs. People who work with NGOs get shot without question in Kandahar,” she said. Suliman has received phone threats and the Taliban have criticized her.

But one of Suliman’s greatest challenges lies at home. “The night of my first exhibit my family told me ‘if you go, don’t come back’,” she said. While her sisters and mother now support her ambition and passion, her father and brothers are strongly opposed.

Last year, working with KFAA, Suliman taught Kandahar’s first contemporary arts workshop and participated in Helmand’s first ever first art exhibitions. Future Projects include workshops in sculpture and graphite drawing. “My target with graphite is that Afghans wear it around their eyes, and by using graphite in art, this might change their views and minds.”

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTRJ3dy-eeY]

Suliman’s work knows no limits. She uses traditional paints on canvas, spray cans on walls and rock, and broken glass, tree shavings, and whatever interesting trash she picks up in multimedia collage. She believes that any piece of scrap can be turned into art.

She has a profound passion for her work. Her long-term goal is to travel throughout Afghanistan, conducting workshops, introducing future artists to drawing, painting, sculpting and graffiti. Her immediate goal is to create a platform of expression for a generation whose voices often go unheard.
