Babaà was founded in 2012 by Marta Bahillo, a textile designer with a passion for natural fibers and sustainable fashion. After studying textile design in Dublin, Ireland, and gaining experience in Argentina, Bahillo returned to her roots in Spain, where she created Babaà with the goal of offering beautifully crafted, eco-conscious clothing. Her vision was to bring timeless, locally made garments to life, using the finest natural materials sourced from Spanish sheep. Marta’s commitment to sustainability and the slow fashion movement is embedded in every piece, ensuring that each sweater is crafted with care, precision, and respect for the environment.

Babaà’s mission wasn’t just about creating clothes—it was about creating a lifestyle. Bahillo, who values simplicity and a natural way of life, made sure that every aspect of her brand aligned with those values. Whether it’s her preference for wearing only natural fibers or her choice to get movies from a “video club” in Madrid instead of streaming services, Bahillo’s dedication to a more mindful and authentic way of living is at the heart of Babaà.

The Appeal of Babaà Sweaters:

Oversized blue sweater by babaa borrowed by my teenager.

Babaà sweaters have a special place in the hearts of those who love a combination of comfort, style, and sustainability. These thick, cozy pieces have a nostalgic, almost “homemade” charm, reminiscent of something your grandmother might have knitted—if she were an expert at working with the best wool and colors. The sweaters are designed with large buttons, simple yet aesthetically pleasing patterns, and come in a variety of vibrant hues as well as calming shades of oatmeal. Their timeless design and high-quality craftsmanship give them an effortlessly cool, vintage feel, making them perfect for anyone who loves to feel cozy without sacrificing style.

The brand has gained a loyal following over the years, especially among women who appreciate the slow-fashion movement and a natural lifestyle. In fact, The New Yorker even covered the brand’s appeal to a group of women the author dubs “organic moms,” who are known for their love of co-ops, clogs, and laid-back, sustainable living. These women are drawn to Babaà not just for its beautiful designs, but because it aligns with their values—supporting local craftsmanship, ethical production, and natural materials.

I recently had the chance to try out two Babaà sweaters, and I have to say, they absolutely live up to the hype.

The Oversized Blue Sweater

Bold Yet Comfortable: This oversized blue sweater immediately grabbed my attention. With its bright, bold color and relaxed fit, it has that 80s vibe that feels both nostalgic and modern. The sweater is soft—softer than you might expect from a wool sweater—and it drapes beautifully. It’s the kind of piece that stands out on its own, making a statement without feeling over-the-top.

The softness of the blue sweater is definitely a win. Compared to the natural brown one, it’s much softer against the skin, which makes it ideal for those days when you just want to be wrapped up in warmth and softness. It’s the kind of piece that stands out, whether you’re at a casual get-together or just chilling at home. It’s fun, cozy, and the perfect nod to a past decade of fashion.

The Natural Dark Brown Sweater

A Nod to Nature: The natural dark brown sweater has a completely different vibe. This one is all about authenticity and connection to nature. The undyed wool gives it a raw, earthy feel, and the short-neck design adds to its simplicity.

The sweater smells like a sheep—something that may seem odd to some, but for me, it only adds to the charm. It’s clear this sweater was made with the finest natural materials. The texture of the wool is a bit more rugged compared to the softer blue sweater, but it’s still incredibly cozy. This piece is perfect for anyone who appreciates raw, unprocessed materials and loves that “earthy” feel.

A Minor Drawback – Pilling: One minor downside to both sweaters is the pilling. After a few wears, they do show some light fuzzing. It’s not a huge deal, and honestly, it’s easy to overlook because the overall comfort and style of the sweaters far outweigh this small imperfection. If you’re someone who’s sensitive to pilling, you might want to keep a fabric shaver handy, but for the most part, it’s a minor issue in the grand scheme of things.

Karin Kloosterman in a babaa sweater

The company rightly notices that cotton is one of the most destructive agricultural products on the market.

In part this is because the crop requires a lot of water, is dosed with scantly regulated quantities of harmful pesticides that eventually contaminate groundwater, many of the chemicals don’t wash out, and people who put all the work into caring for cotton are rarely compensated as they should be.

As a result, CC has voluntarily sought certification from an organization that holds companies to the most stringent international organic standard – GOTS.

“We all know the world is changing,” CC writes on their website. “Today more than ever we are aware of the environmental and social implications of the goods we consume.”

“People are beginning to see that industry and ecology MUST go hand in hand, they continue. It’s up to every one of us, and we believe that together we can make this amazing awakening into a new, better, greener reality.”

Caravan Collective is doing their part with a fun line of organic apparel specifically geared towards cyclists, but non-cyclists would love their quirky shirts, baby clothes, forthcoming tank tops for both men and women and even accessories.

The vision was born on an organic farm in northern Israel and the fun-loving firm strives to deliver the highest quality design and materials.

One percent of the company’s profits are donated to environmental causes.

Cycling has taken off in Israel in recent years. In addition to taking part in races and exploring backcountry trails, many cyclists commute to work on their saddled steed. There’s even a cardboard bike from the country that is close to hitting the marketplace.

Now the thriving new subculture has a locally-owned and operated clothing line of their own, and one whose environmental and social ethic they can be proud of.

The time has finally come to announce the winner of the Facebook competition launched in cooperation with MuMu Organic – the first organic clothing line in Greece. Randomly chosen by our judges, Shannon Gilmour gets to enjoy the dress of her choice, which will be shipped to her from Greece. Readers will recall that we asked participants to say why it’s important to choose organic and fair trade clothing. This is what Shannon wrote:

“I recently watched a talk – Michael Braungart: Why Less Bad Isn’t Better (you can find it here http://vimeo.com/2362082.)

Braungart, a chemist who promotes Cradle to Cradle thinking and design, talks about the cancerous chemicals in everyday objects. Our skin is the largest permeable organ on our body. What we do to the Earth, we do to ourselves, and that is a scary thought!

After watching this talk, I started to look at my wardrobe differently. I have mostly natural fibers, but few organic pieces. Many of my clothes I have had for many years, and they have held up well, but need replacement. So I started looking online to see what types of fibers have the least chemicals. Surprisingly to me, bamboo is heavily processed with chemicals to convert it to modal, a rayon.

All rayons are chemically processed – so those are out. Silks, are also heavily processed with chemicals. Same for linen made from flax. In the end, organic cotton was by far the best for humanity and the planet. I think MuMu’s dress designs are beautiful and timeless. Organic cotton and fair-trade – Fantastic. I’d rather make it myself than enslave anyone. Finally, clothing for the body, mind, and spirit to feel great in.

Thanks MuMu and Green Prophet!”

Thank you Shannon and our other readers who participated. We didn’t reach our goal but we are still happy to have many new readers on board. And a special thanks to Athena Bentila from MuMu Organic, who will contact both Shannon and the first five respondents entitled to a 50% discount on the company’s online store.

Whereas organic food has been a relatively easy sell to high-end customers, organic clothing has been a little tougher to get going. Organic goat cheese or cherry tomato confit sound delicious to just about anybody, but organic clothing might call to mind tie-dyed hemp drawstring pants or loose beige tank tops. It doesn’t have to be so. An increasing number of young designers see the environmental and personal comfort value of using organic cotton, and so lots of trendy clothes are starting to be made with sustainable fibers. Organic clothing lines are popping up everywhere, including large superstores such as H&M, bringing the trend to the mainstream.

One fashion area that organic clothing is beginning to approach is the high-end market, and Dutch company Pure Rootz is doing its part: one organic polo shirt at a time.

Based in the Netherlands (but with an online shop that opens shopping possibilities to the Middle East), Pure Rootz describes itself as “passionate people with a mission.” The company states that:

“We love stylish and quality clothing, but at the same time we feel responsible for our planet and the trace we leave behind. Everything you do in life has an effect on nature and the people around you. That is why we came up with a full organic & fair-trade casual clothing brand: PURE ROOTZ. In this way we make it possible for you to wear cool and stylish clothing while taking care of nature and the people making it.”

The company’s line of polo shirts and high quality long sleeved shirts appeal to a preppier demographic not usually courted by organic fashionistas.

They’re still plenty of appeal left for staunch hemp-wearing environmentalists, though, as Pure Rootz donates 10 percent of its profits – 5% of its profits towards Serengeti Watch (which protects lions) and another 5% towards nature conservation projects.

Highstreet ethical clothing designed just for Muslim modesty is a little difficult to find here in England, UK, but with some online research you can pick up great items to stay organic and Islamic. Here is a fine selection of core wardrobe pieces I dug from the store Fashion Conscience. Wear the dress with leggings for lazier days, pair up with knee hight boots or mix’n’match the items to create two unique spring-summer outfits, despite the windy British weather. For a truly Middle Eastern flavour try wrapping the headscarf in traditional Arab styles, demonstrated by the plethora of YouTube hijab tutorials.

All items are from Fashion conscience except the v-neck cardigan, which is available from Monsoon.

Want to dress ethically, fashionably, chic and according to the Islamic faith?

Muslim fashion is picking up mainstream trends and Muslim women in particular are experimenting with organic clothing to keep the Islamic principle of modesty tied in with ethical ‘eco-hijab’ living. This ensemble is based on a skirt and cardigan from the UK’s Spirit Of Nature, an entirely organic store striving for ‘eco-living’. In keeping with the eco-lifestyle, the wedges are from Fashion Conscience, bag from Monsoon and scarf from Pearl Daisy.

I like this mix of textures and that the rear-end-covering vest echoes the aqua blue in both skirt and cardigan; it’s a fresh look with hopes of a warmer spring.

This past week the Miami Herald reported on what we’ve known for years: that Tel Aviv, while hot in general, is also one of the hottest green destinations of late. Their article reported on Tel Aviv’s urban farming, vegan/organic/local food options, green drinks, farmer’s markets, eco-friendly forms of transportation, sustainable design, and more. And so in light of the Miami Herald stepping up and noticing, we decided to put together our own mini-green guide to Tel Aviv.

Food

Whether your food cause of choice is vegan, organic, or local (or all three), Tel Aviv has options for you. If you’re shopping for yourself, organic and local farmer’s markets can currently be found in two spots in Tel Aviv. Orbanic (an urban/organic farmer’s market) takes place every Friday at Hatachana, the newly renovated Turkish train station between Neve Tsedek and Jaffa. And if you’re in the northern part of the city? Tel Aviv’s Port hosts another organic farmer’s market every Tuesday and Friday.

Vegan and/or vegetarian diets more your thing? You can check out a Meatless Monday at Tel Aviv University, in the northern part of the city. In the southern part of the city, at the corner of Yehuda Halevi and Herzl (or at their alternate branch on Ibn Gvirol) you can bite into a juicy vegan burger or shwarma at Buddha Burger, a completely vegan restaurant with an extensive menu.

Architecture

Tel Aviv is known for its Bauhaus architecture, which is kind of green in and of itself since one of its characteristics includes cross ventilation (reducing the need for energy-guzzling air conditioning). But beyond that, Tel Aviv has been developing greener architecture. The Azouri Brothers are currently building Tel Aviv’s first eco-high rise (which will be 20 stories tall, check out the image on the right). There are many other green spaces in the White City, however, which are celebrated in Tel Aviv’s annual architectural weekend (usually takes place in May).

Transportation

Sure, walking is eco-friendly, but in a city as hot and humid as Tel Aviv you might want to get where you’re going a little faster. Which is why cycling is a great option. If you’d like more of a leisurely, sightseeing ride then EcoBike offers Bike & Beer tours (a 3 hour bike ride through many of Tel Aviv’s sites followed by a cold beer on the beach). Or wanna pick up some extra cash while in Tel Aviv? Become a Greenie Bicycle Courier for a day or so.

Fashion

The residents of Tel Aviv have, historically, always been fashion conscious but now they are becoming more eco-conscious as well. Some local designers are integrating more sustainable materials into their lines, such as organic cotton. Cotton boutique, on the northern part of Dizengoff, offers a completely organic cotton fashion line (check out one of their dresses above). PopLove Designs, a team of two Tel Aviv-based designers, brings a different approach to sustainable fashion with their upcycled fabric clothing. Zendegi, in Neve Tsedek, offers organic and fair trade clothes from a range of designers.

Adults aren’t the only ones who stand to benefit from Tel Aviv’s sustainable clothing trend, though. Katanchic, in Dizengoff Center, offers organic clothes for oh-so-trendy green babies.

Shopping

If shopping for green clothes isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other green products. There are plenty of sustainable designers working out of Tel Aviv, finding creative ways to reuse our junk. One of these is Hasadna (or, the “workshop”), appropriately located in the Jaffa flea market, and among their products is a chandelier made out of plastic ice cream spoons (check out the photo on the left).

Other Tel Aviv-based upcycling design studios include Studio Mesila, Studio Ubico, and Junktion.

Since her launch in 2008, Egyptian fashion designer Nadia Nour has been wowing fashionistas with her elegantly glamorous and individual fashion range which also happen to be environmentally-friendly.

Graduating with a degree in Fashion and Philosophy, it’s seems that Nadia Nour was destined to create an ethical fashion range that gracefully combines her love for fashion with concerns for the planet. With a focus on organic cotton, silks and vintage fabrics, Nadia has also shown her commitment to her home city by producing locally in New York City’s Garment District.

She insists that you can still wear high-end fashion, show off your personal style and reduce your carbon footprint. I spoke to Nadia about what inspires her work, her top tips for eco-shoppers and how her Arab heritage shapes her work.

What inspired you to create an environmentally-friendly clothing range?
As I learned about the fashion industry’s negative impact on the environment, I realized that I did not want to be part of the problem. By producing locally in NYC, I am reducing emissions caused by transportation as well as helping to sustain the local economy and maintain manufacturing jobs through my support of the NY Garment District.

My organic fabrics are dyed with all natural ingredients which helps to keep toxic dyes from being flushed into our water supply. My organic cottons are also grown without the use of pesticides which is not only healthier for people and the planet, but also makes for a softer and more durable fabric.

Although you use natural and organic materials and dyes, your range of clothing is very sophisticated and glamourous. Was this a conscious decision?
Definitely, my goal is to design clothes that are beautiful and that are also organic. Women do not have to sacrifice style to be green.

What do you think is going to be the next big thing in Eco-Fashion?
I think we will continue to see an expanding variety of organic fabrics and collections.

Does your Arab heritage influence your work?
Yes, I am inspired by the rich colors and beautiful geometric designs found throughout the Arab world. The idea of world traveling and cross-cultural influence inspires much of work.

What eco designers do you admire?
Karim Rashid is inspiring in his approach to lifestyle design and his environmentally-conscious methods.

Any advice or top tips to offer the fashion conscious eco warrior?
Read your labels and do your homework. I think the organic fashion movement should follow the example of the organic food movement. People educated themselves about the ingredients and manufacturing of their food and as awareness was raised, demand was created for organic food. Companies responded and today almost every grocery store in the US has an organic section.

Although you use natural and organic materials and dye, your range of clothing is very sophisticated, feminine glamour.

Finally, what can we expect from Nadia Nour in the future?
I am developing initial plans for expanding my line to include accessories and jewellery.

Stay tuned for more on Nadia Nour’s range of eco accessories and jewellery to go with her certified organic, lovely and sustainable clothing.

Many people wouldn’t normally associate Islam with fair-trade and ethical fashion but that is all set to change as a growing number of Muslim companies rediscover Islam’s fair-trade message. Whilst fair-trade fashion would generally conjure up images of well-dressed hippies, there is a new generation of Muslims who are placing ethical concerns at the heart of their work and wardrobe. Not only does this indicate rising green and ethical awareness in Muslim businesses, it also means there is a growing demand from normal Muslims for environmentally-friendly options. I spoke to some of the people behind these unique companies from across the UK, Canada and the Middle East to find out more.

Muslims go Organic with T-shirts and Hijabs

Urban Ummah is a UK-based clothing line that sells fair-trade, ethically produced and environmentally-friendly printed t-shirts with catchy Muslim slogans. One t-shirt which caught my eye was the ‘Yes, I am Organic and Islamic.’ It explains on the website that going organic is not only good for your health but ultimately leads to a better quality of life for you and those growing the crops, who would otherwise suffer from the side effects of harmful pesticides.

“As Muslims, it is our duty to put a stop to this [farmers in third world countries becoming ill due to the use of chemicals in the crops they produce]. If we switch to a few organic products on our shopping lists instead of the usual rubbish we subject our bodies to, perhaps we can make a real difference to someones life. Becoming fairtrade, organic, ethical and environmental, is all expected of a Muslim, so please give a damn!”

Artizara's Hand-woven fair trade natural bamboo hijab

But it’s not just t-shirts that Muslim businesses are providing; Artizara sells fair-trade hijabs for eco-conscious Muslimahs, and in Canada Queendom Hijabs offer a full range of eco-hijabs made from certified organic cotton and bamboo.

Organic cotton is particularly eco-friendly as it has minimal impacts on the environment, while bamboo grows at a rapid rate, requires very little pesticide and is 100% biodegradable. Founder of Queendom Hijabs, Abeer Al-Azzawi spoke to Green Prophet about why she decided that all her products would be environmentally-friendly.

“Islam promotes values of caring for nature and God’s creation,” she explained. “So it’s our responsibility to respect nature and do what we can not to damage it. If we have opportunities to contribute positively to environmental issues, we should seize them.”

Green Credentials spread to the Middle East

Aber, who is originally from Iraq, added that she hopes her green credentials will inspire the rest of the Muslim world to be more eco-conscious. In fact, an ethical fashion revolution seems already under way due to SHUKR Clothing, a company which is championing ethical and fair-trade practices in the Middle East.

SHUKR was launched in 2001 by Jaafar Malik and Anas Sillwood, both British citizens who have recently moved to the Middle East. Anas explained that like many other younger Muslims he struggled with the dilemma of trying to dress in ways that were faithful and modest on the one hand and fashionable and modern on the other. “SHUKR was, therefore, launched to meet the need for contemporary, fashionable Islamic clothing,” he explains.

“Interestingly enough, we soon found that members of other faith communities also seemed to have similar dilemmas to a certain extent, and it wasn’t long before we also had loyal Christian and Jewish customers amongst the SHUKR clientele.”

Queendom Hijabs are made from certified organic cotton and bamboo

Anas explains that in terms of fair-trade, the majority of SHUKR’s raw materials – especially cotton – are purchased from Syria under fair, fixed prices which support cotton producers.

“Islam’s emphasis on fairness and justice spills over into a concern for fulfilling workers rights, the second main goal of the fair trade movement. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, famously said that the worker should be paid his wages before his sweat dries…”

“As for environmental sustainability,” continues Anas, “The Qur’an repeatedly informs us that wastefulness is an appalling trait, and traditional Muslims in the Muslim heartlands have internalized this message; they may not have had the exposure to widespread governmental “green” campaigns like we have in the West, but their religion has taught them, for example, not to waste.”

As SHUKR, Queendom Hijabs and Urban Ummah have illustrated, the green and fair-trade message is growing amongst the Muslim population who believe ethical standards are important as they are rooted in Islamic principles. Minimizing waste, protecting the environment and providing fair wages may have only recently become fashionable but they have always formed part of the Islamic ethic of fairness.

Maybe you should rethink your choice of fabric.

Sitting here in the sticky summer heat, it is difficult to choose what to wear when really any extra layer on our skin is something we wish we could avoid. The choice can be made easier for you when you consider not just the article of clothing, but the material from which it is made. But with all those fabrics out there; cotton, polyester, acrylic and silk, who really knows what is best?

The most obvious answer is that natural is always best. Unfortunately there are many other options out there that feel great. As you wonder around trying to choose anything from skirts to socks, there are always many cheaper synthetic options available, which are soft and comfortable to the touch.

Acrylic – This is one of the most common fabrics around and is a versatile and cheap substitute for natural fabrics. It is made through chemical processing that gives us a fine soft material. Being soft is great, but on the other hand, this fabric doesn’t last as long as natural fabrics and tends to fuzz easily. Aside from this a chemically processed material is far from the best option to have on your skin for hours at a time.

Polyester – Here we have again another fabric made through chemical processing, this time based on petroleum. Does this sound like something you skin would appreciate? This is another fabric you should avoid since not only does it not allow your skin to breathe, but if you have sensitive skin, this can lead to all kinds of irritations.

These are not the only synthetic fabrics to avoid, as you start checking labels, you will realise that many products use a blend of synthetic and natural fabrics. Ideally, you want to find clothing made of 100% natural fibres such as wool, cashmere, satin or linen. Of course, in the heat of a Middle Eastern summer there are some better options.

You should choose a natural fabric that leaves your skin free to enjoy the fresh air

Cotton – If you have sensitive skin, or if you are just looking for some sexy environmental fun clothing alternatives, this is the fabric for you. As a natural fabric, cotton allows air to circulate through the fabric to your skin, which in turn helps absorb perspiration and take away the heat. In this way your body can be kept nice and dry through those sticky days. Not only this, but it will stand the test of time, lasting through multitudes of washes and at the end of the day is actually biodegradable.

Silk – Just to give your skin a little summer treat, try out the elegance of silk. It is one of the oldest fabrics known to man, dating back to Ancient China, Greece and Rome and for a good reason. It is one of the strongest natural fibres and being highly absorbent makes it cool in summer and warm in winter.

From the sheen of silk, to everyday cotton and of course different types of wool for winter, the natural fabrics will stand you in good stead. Next time you go shopping for clothes, try looking beyond the style, colour and designer, to the fabric, to make sure that you are giving your skin the best that it deserves.
