Egypt is building a nuclear energy plant, expected to go online in 2026 when countries like Germany have shut down all its domestic nuclear power. The El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant is the first nuclear power plant planned for Egypt and will be located at El Dabaa, Matrouh Governorate, Egypt, about 320 kilometers northwest of Cairo.

According to project documents, the plant is expected to generate around 37 billion kWh per year, enough energy to power about 10 million homes. Consider that millions of Egyptians are very poor and use bitumen for cooking.

Egypt is building the nuclear power plant with Russia, and the head of Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA), Sherif Helmy, recently took part in the Young Scientists Forum in the Russian city of Sochi, an event that drew senior international experts and officials in the nuclear energy sector.

This flagship project is aimed at boosting Egypt’s energy capacity and deepening Moscow–Cairo strategic ties.

In a statement, the NPPA said Helmy used the forum’s main session — themed “From the First Russian Nuclear Plant to Global Technological Leadership” — to outline the significant progress at El Dabaa nuclear power project.

He told reporters the installation of the reactor pressure vessel for the first unit, attended remotely by the Egyptian and Russian presidents via video link, marked a historic milestone and underscored strong political backing in both countries.

Helmy said Egypt’s nuclear program aligns with the country’s National Climate Change Strategy 2050, adding that nuclear power plays a critical role in supporting economic and industrial development. He made it clear that current priorities include completing the El Dabaa project on schedule and tracking global advances in small modular reactors (SMRs). Turkey is also steadily developing nuclear energy technology around Eastern Europe and Baltic states.

Helmy praised Egyptian–Russian cooperation, describing it as a solid strategic partnership that is essential for delivering the project’s goals. He said the NPPA is seeking deeper collaboration on peaceful nuclear applications and initiatives to promote nuclear energy across Africa.

Concluding his participation, Helmy said Egypt would continue to train national personnel, strengthen international cooperation and expand scientific and technical capabilities to advance the country’s sustainable energy vision.

Given that the Egyptian Navy can’t save people trapped inside a dive boat from drowning, we have little faith that the Egyptian authorities will be able to manage a nuclear reactor safely.

It is expected to generate around 10% of the country’s electricity when completed.

At a recent forum in Sochi, Russia, Turkey’s Energy and Natural resources minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced that nuclear energy would play a “critical role” in Turkey’s journey towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2053. Like Greta Thunberg, Turkey and Russia consider nuclear energy renewable energy.

“We aim to reach a total of 12 reactors and a nuclear power of 15,000 megawatts, with probably four reactors in three different locations in Turkey,” he said.

Bayraktar said the country’s aim was to install two additional nuclear plants alongside the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, currently under construction in the Mersin province. Environmentalists in Turkey have been against the plant, built in collaboration with Russia, from the outset.

Funny that the true renewable energy leader Germany shut down its last reactor in 2023, while Turkey starts up its first.

The Turkish Government view nuclear energy as renewable energy. Nuclear is not a renewable energy source, but it is an alternative to fossil fuels because it does not emit greenhouse gases. Environmental groups usually consider nuclear as a non-renewable energy source.

The Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is a large nuclear power plant in Turkey under construction located in Akkuyu, Büyükeceli, Mersin Province. It is expected to generate around 10% of the country’s electricity when completed.

“We have a great potential for renewables and energy efficiency, but we absolutely need to add nuclear energy into our energy mix,” Bayraktar said.

Some thought leaders at the Dayan Center believe that while Turkey has agreed as part of NATO to be a non-nuclear state, the use of nuclear as domestic energy will give Turkey an easy in for developing nuclear weapons. Erdogen said in 2019 said, “Some countries have missiles with nuclear warheads, not one or two. But I can’t have missiles with nuclear heads. I cannot accept this.”

Nuclear energy is often misconstrued as renewable due to its low greenhouse gas emissions and continuous power generation. However, it is not classified as renewable for several reasons. Firstly, nuclear power relies on the extraction of uranium, a finite resource that must be mined, processed, and refined. Although uranium reserves are substantial, they are not limitless, and extraction entails environmental impacts such as habitat destruction and water pollution.

Nuclear energy produces hazardous radioactive waste that remains harmful for thousands of years, requiring careful disposal and management. Unlike renewable sources like solar and wind, which generate power through natural processes that are indefinitely available, nuclear reactors rely on controlled nuclear fission, a process that consumes uranium fuel and generates waste.

The construction and decommissioning of nuclear power plants involve significant energy inputs and environmental costs, making them less sustainable than truly renewable alternatives. While nuclear energy provides low-carbon electricity, its reliance on finite resources and generation of long-lived radioactive waste preclude it from being classified as a renewable energy source. Thus, while nuclear energy may contribute to reducing carbon emissions in the short term, it is not a sustainable solution for meeting long-term energy needs.

Has Turkey misread the room by calling nuclear energy renewable energy? The proposed expansion aims to reach 7.2 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear capacity by 2035 and up to 20GW by 2050.

Bayraktar has described plans for incorporating small modular reactors, which could potentially contribute some 5GW over the next few decades.

The minister also expressed the necessity of developing a balanced energy mix, combining renewable sources with stable base load power, particularly citing the intermittent nature of solar and wind energy.

Turkey’s sunny climate offers a high solar energy potential, specifically in the South Eastern Anatolia and Mediterranean regions. Solar power is a growing part of renewable energy in the country, with 12 gigawatts (GW) of solar panels generating 6% of the country’s electricity.

Wind power generates about 10% of Turkey’s electricity, mainly in the west in the Aegean and Marmara regions, and is gradually becoming a larger share of renewable energy in the country. As of 2024, Turkey has 12 gigawatts (GW) of wind turbines.

Turkey has a problematic environmental track record. Consider the environmentalists who were murdered over the construction of a stone quarry in their forest.

Being on the side of the planet doesn’t pay in Turkey. You can go to jail for speaking up against pollution or high cancer rates in children. Turkey’s leader supports Hamas and terror groups publicly. Are these the kind of society you want using nuclear power?

Just a reminder to Turkey:

Chernobyl Disaster (1986): The Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion in Ukraine remains one of the worst nuclear accidents in history. A combination of design flaws and operator errors led to a catastrophic explosion in reactor 4, releasing a massive amount of radioactive materials into the atmosphere. The disaster resulted in immediate deaths, widespread radiation exposure, and long-term health effects for thousands of people. The affected area remains largely uninhabitable to this day.

Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster (2011): Following a devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant experienced multiple reactor meltdowns, hydrogen explosions, and the release of radioactive materials. The disaster led to widespread evacuations, contamination of soil and water, and long-term health concerns for residents and workers. It reignited global debates on nuclear safety and prompted a reassessment of nuclear power policies worldwide.

Three Mile Island Accident (1979): The partial meltdown of a reactor at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania, USA, marked a significant nuclear accident in history. Equipment malfunctions and human errors led to a loss of coolant and partial core meltdown in reactor 2. While the incident resulted in limited off-site radiation releases and no immediate fatalities, it caused public panic, raised safety concerns, and led to stricter regulations for nuclear power plants in the United States.

Like making lemonade from lemons (or fermented lemons which are even better) Russian scientists have found the best way to use an invasive weed brought from America – and called hairy beggarticks or Bidens pilosa officially. Its other names are black-jack, cobbler’s pegs and Spanish needle. The Russians found that the leaves of the plant contain an interesting enzyme, one that could function as a vegan alternative in the food industry to make cheese and wine, they report in the International Journal of Scientific & Technology Research. This plant, like duckweed as a superfood (see the startup GreenOnyx), could be a promising new ingredient that is vegan, kosher and halal.

Eating a Plant-Based Diet

The scientists say that the leaf extract of hairy beggarticks (let’s say it three times: hairy beggarticks, hairy beggarticks, hairy beggarticks!) contains enzymes that speed up fermentation in wine and which help turn milk into cheese, working as a plant-based alternative to the expensive enzymes used in the food industry such as rennet which comes from an animal stomach. Vegans are looking for alternatives to animal based products constantly such as sturgeon or gelatine as wine clarifiers. Remember when Starbucks got called out for putting crushed red beetles in its frappuccinos? That’s what we are talking about.

According to the authors from South Ural State University, the technique they now use with the invasive plant can produce cheaper plant alternatives to expensive enzymes necessary in wine and cheese production. And obviously the vegan alternative is much desired as more people turn to a plant based diet.

“There is a long tradition of using Bidens pilosa as a medicine,” says Irina Potoroko from the Russian institute. “Due to its prevalence, its use, in our opinion, is extremely beneficial in winemaking and milk processing, where the Bidens pilosa extract can become an alternative to many food animal enzymes,” she said.

In the experiments, the researchers proved that fresh leaves of Bidens pilosa have high protease activity in an acidic buffer pH 4 (8.2567 × 10-7 mM / mg / min) compared to an alkaline buffer pH 10 (5.15 × 10-7 mM / mg / min) at 30 degrees Celsius. The scientists were able to determine the optimal conditions for the enzymatic activity of the leaf extract, which makes it possible to use in various technological processes.

Potoroko believes that it is necessary to continue the research in order to find out which part of the plant (roots, stem, flowers?) has the greatest protease activity, because the research carried out was focused only on fresh leaves.

Bidens pilosa is widespread in the world as a weed imported from America. In Russia, the plant was found in the Far East. Bidens pilosa belongs to the quarantine weeds prohibited for import. Going forward, the scientists want to break down even more parts of the plant, which originated in the U.S. but spread throughout the world as an invasive weed.

Related: Read about really good “Jewish” ice cream from Tel Aviv that uses hummous as a base.

“Who allowed them to offend national feelings?” Shteinberg told the news website Tatar-inform.ru. He also threatened to sue the factory if they don’t stop production of the ice cream. Slavitsa’s director responded by saying, “Look at the sales! People love it! At the end of the day, it’s clear that this Jew is not poor at all,” making reference to the ice cream’s commercial success.

The city prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into whether the ice cream maker used the name “Poor Jew” and the Israeli flag legally on its packaging.

The Slavitsa company has long demonstrated questionable taste. They were previously criticized for creating a chocolate ice cream named after then-President Barack Obama, which had a wrapper depicting an African boy, and for naming another ice cream with an ethnic slur for Ukrainians.

One of them is a young woman from Turkey.

The environmental hardline activists are not the most extreme out there, but their actions known widely in the western world are usually done without severe impunity. But the Russians, famous for jailing Pussy Riot activists are not letting go of the activists.

Gizem Akham, a 24 year old cooking student from Istanbul is among the 30 Greenpeacers who could face seven years of jail time, or in a correctional colony.

According to her Greenpeace profile: Gizem has always believed in leading a simple life that is respectful of all living things. She has dedicated her life to this principle. In her middle-school years, Gizem helped collect clothes and books for underprivileged children. When she turned 18, she and her father arrived at the Greenpeace Mediterranean office in Istanbul to volunteer. Since then, she has been an active volunteer in many campaigns.

Gizem lives on one of the Prince’s Islands off the coast of Istanbul together with her cat, Momo. Here, she finds the peace and simplicity that is hard to find in the city centre. Gizem left her studies in International Finance to study Gastronomy. Her specialty is deserts and she also used to bring fresh baked cheesecakes every time she visited the Istanbul office and her friends back home really look forward to tasting more of her delicious cakes and pies.

The group, which includes long-time Greenpeace activists, were charged with piracy but now face a lesser sentence of hooliganism.

International involvement is welcome because Russia clearly does not understand the importance of Greenpeace in the modern, environmental dialogue. The fall out by the eco community worldwide could be a disaster for Russia who so wants to belong to the modern, developing world.

Doing it by bully force will not bode well for Russia who is trying to assert itself as a world power in the race for oil as the arctic opens up.

Russia plans to begin selling oil later this year: “As was envisaged, production is expected to start by the year-end,” Gazprom Neft Shelf, a unit of Gazprom, said in an email to Reuters. It was the first public remarks by the company since Greenpeace activists tried to scale the production platform at Russia’s first Arctic offshore oil project last month.

Greenpeacer activists are concerned that an oil spill could damage the world’s only untouched area, becoming bigger now that global warming has caused much of the arctic to melt. The group attempted to peacefully scale the Russian-owned facility in the arctic.

After BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in 2010, there are concerns about a future spill in the arctic. Gazprom said last Thursday that it is able to handle any oil spills at Prirazlomnoye, its rig in the arctic.

The Tel Aviv-based architecture studio Talmon Biran sent us images of their entry into a recent design competition for the Nikola-Lenivets artist community in Russia’s Kaluga region.

Conceived in tandem with Anna Leshchinsky, the proposal calls for a condensed campus-style layout comprised of “floating” wooden structures that sit lightly above ground. Residential and communal spaces are separated and the whole facility is powered by rooftop solar panels.

The Nikola-Lenivets artist community is designed to provide a space that inspires community, creativity and learning. To help catalyze such wholesome aims, the design team chose simple structures that look like pitched boathouses made mostly out of wood.

These are arranged to optimize solar gain in winter and to create plenty of space in between. Hostel-like residential areas are separated from the communal areas which include such facilities as a cafe, gallery and workshop space.

Sustainability is fundamental to the proposal. In addition to honoring the regional vernacular architecture, the team did specific research to determine how the buildings should be oriented to maximize efficiency. An angle of 155 degrees was decided upon and implemented in the design accordingly. The south facade will maximize solar gain while the northern side will provide thermal massing.

Corrugated metal sheets on the southern end of each building maximizes heat absorption, as do floor panels that slowly release warmth throughout the day, while cutouts in the roof promote both daylighting and natural ventilation.

All of these energy-saving measures conserve what is generated by an array of rooftop solar panels that power the entire campus. Water is also heated by the sun, and is conserved via a rainwater harvesting system and a grey water recycling program.

Not content with half-hearted eco-overtures, Biran and Leshchinsky have also proposed to install a living machine that relies on a manmade wetland system to treat the community’s waste water nature’s way. This is an ambitious design that is nonetheless deeply rooted in smart ecological solutions, and we’d love to see it come to life.

In an unstable situation in good times, it’s surprising to learn that Jordan (with its plentiful sun) is intent on building its first nuclear reactor, for what it believes to be a source of nonpolluting, sustainable energy. In the wake of Chernobyl, and now Japan’s nuclear saga, the inability for humanity to learn from its past leaves me dumbfounded.

According to the Jordan Times, and earlier Bloomberg, Jordan has been accepting bids to build a $4 billion USD, 1,100 megawatt nuclear reactor within the next 10 years, outside of Amman.

Nuclear energy and the Middle East are two words that do not go well together, considering that just a couple months ago infidels sabotaged natural gas pipelines from Egypt heading to Jordan. Containing sabotaged nuclear reactors is a little more tricky.

It’s not too late to stop the process: Winners of the bid will be announced by December, with the frontrunners being Russian Atomstroy Export, Canadian AECL and a consortium comprising French firm AREVA and Japanese Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Since reactors are cooled by water, and Jordan remains quite dry, it’s perplexing at best, environmentalists argue, as to how this new project could be compatible with the environment. Not to mention that Jordan is situated on top of a fault zone. I am still scratching my head over this one.

One way readers against nuclear energy can appeal is by contacting authorities in Canada, Japan, France and Russia where the bidders are based. “Enlightened” nations from the developed world might better find ways to help Jordan learn from the West’s mistakes by helping Jordan adopt renewables, like solar energy.

With the nuclear power plant crisis in the Chernobyl reactor in 1986 and now the recent Japanese nuclear crisis at the Fukushima nuclear power plant many people are still wondering if there is any possible good use for nuclear energy , especially when it can create “dead zones” in areas surrounding the damaged reactors, as in case of both Chernobyl and Fukushima, affecting both people and animals as well. Maritime nuclear may circumvent some of the risks.

How a nuclear submarine reactor works

What may not have been taken into account is the maritime success of nuclear energy, and its use in both military and civilian maritime vessels since the first nuclear powered submarine, the USS Nautilus was launched in 1954.

The use of nuclear power has enabled both ships and submarines to travel on the world’s seas and oceans for extended periods of time without the need to refuel. Nuclear power has also been considered as being cleaner and less expensive that the heavy fuel oil needed to power conventionally powered models. Due to the advantages of being able to be at sea for extended periods of time; and in the case of submarines to cruise at depths and in areas not possible in conventional diesel powered models (in the Arctic Ocean for example) nuclear powered military vessels have been the rule since the 1970’s.

Although nuclear energy has not been used much in commercial merchant vessels, it has been used to provide power for ships like large ice breakers which help ensure clear sea lanes for merchant marine vessels sailing in waters above the Arctic Circle.

The Down Side of Nuclear Powered Navy Vessels

Naturally, there is a “down side” to empowering nuclear energy to provide to provide the power for operating large naval vessels. And this is particularly when a nuclear powered vessel, especially a submarine, sinks to the bottom of “Davy Jones’ Locker” with its nuclear reactor and radioactive fuel aboard, as well as possibly a number of nuclear armed missiles.

Since the 1960’s a number of nuclear powered submarines have sunk; two from the USA, including the USS Thresher which sank in April 1963 with 129 crew members and civilian technicians on board. To this day, the remains of this vessel, which broke up into 6 parts, and its nuclear reactor, are still lying in 8,400 feet (2,900 meters of water) in the Atlantic Ocean.

USS Thresher under water

The number of Russian nuclear subs which have sunk is not as well known, although international records indicate that a number of nuclear bombs have been lost at sea from various accidents (US records indicate at least 11 nuclear bombs from American submarines and aircraft alone).

The last Russian nuclear sub lost at sea was the Kursk, which sank in the Barents Sea in August 2000 with 112 crew members on board.

The cause of the sinking of this vessel was later attributed to it colliding with another unknown submarine and although it was not carrying nuclear weapons at the time of the disaster its nuclear reactors were in operation, although Russian authorities testified that the sub’s reactors were shut down when the accident occurred.

Nuclear powered vessels have not yet been introduced into the Middle East; and although the navies of Israel, Egypt, Iran, and possibly other countries have submarines, none are nuclear powered. This doesn’t mean that this could change in the future, however.

The biggest deep-water gas find in a decade has enough reserves to supply Israel’s gas needs for 100 years.

Oil and gas exploration that might benefit Israel has long been stymied by political fears. Because of worries about antagonizing current relationships with Arab partners, Big Oil had till now avoided the possibility of any political blow-back from finding any potential oil and gas in Israel.

So it took a relatively minor company, Noble Energy, to make the Leviathan gas discovery off the shores of Israel.

For years, only small Israeli oil and gas explorers like Riato and an Israeli energy firm, Delek Group, had persisted in trying to find fossil energy for Israel, according to the Wall Street Journal. Delek Group finally succeeded in enticing Houston-based Noble Energy to start exploring off the coast of Israel after the small independent company pioneered off-shore exploration in the Gulf of Mexico.

Because of the urgency of gaining energy independence, situated as it is in the midst of unfriendly neighbors, Israel had passed a very easygoing oil and gas deal back in 1952, with some of the world’s best perks for energy companies, including low royalties and corporate taxes on exploration. But this summer, the Israeli government started considering changing the law, to boost the government’s take of any gas find.

As it became clearer this year that the Tamar, and then the Leviathan gas finds could wind up being very large, Israel’s Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz proposed changing the terms, not just for future finds, but even retroactively, on these previously granted exploration leases. These would abolish tax breaks for energy firms and impose steep tax increases of 20% to 60% on windfall profits.

This would completely change the financial picture for energy companies who are operating on the previous basis. Noble Energy and Israeli oil executives fought back, even enlisting the US State Department and then former President Bill Clinton to lobby hard to keep the law the same.

“Your country can’t just tax a US business retroactively because they feel like it,” Clinton told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in July, after Noble Energy announced its first tentative findings, according to the Wall Street Journal report.

With the prospect of actual energy independence looming now for Israel, with the Leviathan gas find confirmed this week, how Israel handles the relationship between its government and its gas bonanza – will change its history. We have both extremes, from Nigeria, with no laws impeding the oil industry, to Norway, which is the only comparable democracy that has virtually nationalized its oil from the North Sea to benefit its people rather than oil tycoons.

But whatever the government does, the Leviathan gas find has already changed Israel’s relationships with other regions, and not just the great oil and gas powers of the Arab world.

Obviously its own natural gas fired electricity is a natural to power the electric vehicles being developed by local entrepreneur Shah Agassi, to replace the gasoline-powered vehicles that enrich its Arab neighbors.

But currently, electricity fueled by imported Russian coal supplies 71% of Israel’s electricity.

Not only could the nation now substitute for these risky foreign coal supplies by switching to natural gas, (since coal plants are fairly easily converted to burn natural gas, as US utilities have found) but by doing so, Israel can now easily and economically swap almost three quarters of its current electricity portfolio to one with less than half the carbon cost.

So this changes Israel’s relationship with a Northern nation which has been unafraid to bully Europe – when it was in dire need of Russian energy supplies – using its energy hegemony. Now Israel no longer needs Russian coal. With this find, it is not just energy independent, itself.

But customers from throughout Asia are now wooing the formerly friendless nation, desperate for the last drops of fossil fuels.
