<p class="p2">Storefront windows can engage more than the sight. Large TV displays become pointless when sound cannot pass through the window’s glass. Surface speakers can now make brand awareness a complete sensory experience. Window shoppers will not only engage with sights but with sounds, as well.</p>
<p class="p2"><b>Let Them Peek In</b></p>
<p class="p2">A simple way to use your storefront window is to leave it as it is. Keep it sparkling clean and as transparent as it can be. The idea here is to let passersby see what you have to offer inside.</p>
<p class="p2">A restaurant or café can showcase its beautiful ambiance. This will be reason enough for passersby to get enticed and have a meal or enjoy a cup inside. A retail store can draw attention with its clean layout and varied merchandise. Then, potential customers may come in and decide on a purchase.</p>
<p class="p2">Window shoppers can be customers based on what they see on your storefront windows. Choose a strategy that best gives the story of your brand. You can also choose a combination of these ideas. The important thing is to see how passersby or pedestrians engage with your style. Innovate and change as you see fit.</p>

<p>Amid soaring real-estate prices that sent scores of protestors to the streets last year, <a href="http://www.winwin.co.il/Homepage/Page.aspx">an Israeli company</a> recently ran a marketing campaign for affordable lunar homes. According to a report published in the <em>Times of Israel, </em>an email circulated among local press promised that intrepid home seekers could purchase “Beautiful apartment towers &#8230; built in plastic bubbles” and &#8220;apartments for all size families, from three rooms to large penthouses, along with garden apartments.”<span id="more-77126"></span></p>
<p><strong>Earthly comforts on the moon</strong></p>
<p>Nor would they have to leave behind their earthly creature comforts as a movie theater, restaurants and cafes, schools and cable TV, along with a lake similar to the <a href="http://www.greenprophet.com/2012/03/sea-of-galilee-risestwo-meters-but-still-runs-short-of-water/">Sea of Galilee</a> would also be available at the IsraMoon colony.</p>
<p>Listed on the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/%D7%99%D7%A9%D7%A8%D7%90%D7%9E%D7%95%D7%9FIsramoon/418313651535392" target="_blank">IsraMoon’s Facebook page</a>, prices for the lunar apartments ranged from $156,000 to $207,000 and WinWin even produced a compelling <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_50wuYMYQpw&amp;feature=player_embedded" target="_blank">Youtube video</a> for disbelievers. Thousands of people responded to the advertisement, but not everybody was amused.</p>
<p>A senior Israeli editor who asked not to be named in the <em>Times of Israel&#8217;s</em> story threatened to file a report with local police. In an email to WinWin, copied to the journalists who had been taken in by their clever but deceitful marketing stint, he accused the company of fraud.</p>
<p>&#8220;Will you also be setting up facilities for youth groups?” he asked in his email. And referring to last year&#8217;s protests he continued, “and will you be building a boulevard for protesters who will demand social justice outside the fancy lunar ‘penthouses?&#8221;</p>
<p>The IsraMoon website has been closed down following a Facebook declaration that with 130,000 apartments available on WinWin&#8217;s site, it isn&#8217;t necessary to move to the moon.</p>
<p><strong>No lunar dwellings, but what about Mars?</strong></p>
<p>But here&#8217;s the strangest twist: even though it&#8217;s not possible to live on the moon, <a href="http://mars-one.com/en/mission/mission-and-vision">Mars One</a>, a Dutch initiative, is promising to establish the first human settlement on the red planet by 2023.</p>
<p>They also claim that by 2033 there will be more than 20 people living and flourishing at their new home &#8211; which takes a mere seven months to reach!</p>
<p>Mars One dwellings are expected to consist of a Lander equipped with a special inflatable section that creates a large living space after landing. Clearly they haven&#8217;t heard about Nader Khalili and his <a href="http://www.greenprophet.com/2011/12/nader-khalili-earth-buildings-space/">earth architecture fit for space</a>.</p>

<p>This isn&#8217;t necessarily green news, but it does have potential for sparking green activism projects: At the end of October 55 people posing as airport personnel and other normal citizens broke out in a well-rehearsed dance at the <a href="http://www.dubaiairport.com/">Dubai International Airport</a>. It was a &#8220;flash mob&#8221; and it took months to organize. The film of the event has gone viral with thousands of hits within hours of being posted on YouTube.</p>
<p>Scott Mars­hall from <a href="http://www.diversechoreography.com/">Dubai-based Diverse Choreogr­aphy</a> was responsible for the high-energy routines that amassed hundreds of happy travelers. Real airport workers knew that the event was going to take place, so this isn&#8217;t a case of crazy westerners hijacking the Emirate airport. Instead, the mob dance was a marketing ploy sponsored by the airport to draw attention to the DXB Connect Debit Card.</p>
<p>This just goes to show that despite all the fun poked at rich sheikhs like <a href="http://www.greenprophet.com/2011/07/hamad-sheikh-grafitti-spac/">Hamad, who carved his name into a beach</a> so that it would be visible from space, and <a href="http://www.greenprophet.com/2010/03/white-gold-mercedes/">gold mercedes drivers</a>, the Emiratis have a sense of adventure and humor. We hope that their willingness to hold a flash mob event, which definitely flouts convention, bodes well for future environmental policies as well!</p>

<p>An American marketing extraordinaire, Jen Drexler knows <a href="http://www.greenprophet.com/2011/03/bedouin-women-solar-power/">what women want</a>. She also knows what they aren&#8217;t telling!</p>
<p>Along with her partner Mary Lou Quinlan, Jen founded Just Ask a Woman more than a decade ago, a <a href="http://www.greenprophet.com/2010/11/are-superfoods-for-real-or-just-a-marketing-device/">marketing firm</a> that helps brands understand and better serve female consumers.</p>
<p>We first learned of her through <em>The National</em>, where she discusses the concept of &#8220;green-ish&#8221; &#8211; a term based on the notion that women often say one thing (the Half Truth) but do another (the Whole Truth). In an interview, she tells us how women often &#8220;talk a big game around green but don&#8217;t necessarily follow through,&#8221; and how we can influence them to <a href="http://www.greenprophet.com/2010/02/ecomum-green-birthday-party/">be more green</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Jen, can you tell us a bit about your role at Just Ask a Woman?</strong></p>
<p>I co-founded our company 12 years ago with our CEO Mary Lou Quinlan.  My primary roles are servicing our consulting clients and developing content for our books, speeches and blogs.</p>
<p><strong>We heard about you through a story published in <em>The National</em>. Ann Marie McQueen discusses formerly eco-friendly expats who &#8220;backslide&#8221; in the UAE as a result of have access to fewer &#8220;green&#8221; resources. What is the challenge facing them? </strong></p>
<p>I guess my question is are they really backsliding because of fewer resources? My hunch is that they may backslide because it is easier and less expensive to not go green or they just don’t rank it as high on their value system.</p>
<p><strong>You note that one of the solutions is to become &#8220;greenish.&#8221; Can you explain this to our readers? </strong></p>
<p>I wouldn’t say being Green-ish is a solution but rather that it is an inevitable truth for real women living in a real world.  Women want to do the right thing by their families and their environment but have to make daily compromises because of their financial resources.  Green products generally cost more so women will prioritize the areas in her life where they are the most important.</p>
<p><strong>What, in your opinion, is so hard about going &#8220;green&#8221;? Is this a marketing failure? A government failure to provide adequate resources to make smarter choices, or is this good ol&#8217; fashioned laziness? </strong></p>
<p>I think it comes down to cost and quality.  Do organic cleansers work as well as the ones filled with chemicals? Not usually.  And even if they did Americans have been trained to associate the smell of products like bleach with cleanliness and with the absence of that sensory signal they doubt the efficacy of their green cleaners.</p>
<p><strong>As a marketing guru who best understands how women make consumer choices, what can we do in the Middle East to influence women to make more responsible choices? </strong></p>
<p>You have to understand the barriers to green for her and then look for the opportunities to overcome them.  If there aren’t enough products on shelf for her to choose from think about ways to help her make her own (water &amp; vinegar as a cleanser, baking soda as a stain remover…)</p>
<p><strong>And lastly, from a marketing perspective, how do we know we&#8217;re winning? </strong></p>
<p>When women feel like they have more in their repertoire that is green versus not. Shifting the balance will be the signal that progress is being made.</p>
