Learn how to make sustainable paper from mushrooms using tough, fibrous fungi like artist’s conk, turkey tail, and birch polypore. This eco-friendly craft transforms woody polypores into strong, chitin-based sheets perfect for art projects, greeting cards, or handmade journals. Our step-by-step guide to mushroom papermaking covers soaking, pulping, forming sheets with a mould and deckle, and drying methods—showing how fungi can replace traditional wood pulp for unique, natural paper.

How to Make Mushroom Paper

If you’ve already experimented with making moss graffiti or traditional papermaking, here’s the next level of nature craft: mushroom paper. This activity is perfect for forest schools, Waldorf school families, or DIY crafters who love experimenting with natural materials. Making paper from fungi not only produces unique earthy textures and colors, but it also connects you with the forest in an entirely new way. With seeds or dried flowers added, your creations can even be planted—turning your art into living gifts.

Why Mushrooms?

My daughter and friend Raven study and ID mushrooms that are edible.

Unlike plants (which are rich in cellulose), mushrooms are made of chitin, a strong structural polymer. This gives mushroom paper a distinct leathery texture—sometimes even resembling vegan leather, such as that used by iconic fashion designer Stella McCartney, the daughter of the Beatle’s Paul.

While we’ve heard from mycologists that say you can use poisonous mushrooms for paper as well as edible, we;d stay on the safe side and suggest using fungi confirmed by a local expert to be non-poisonous. And stick to woody, tough species you wouldn’t want to eat. Mushrooms like chaga could be curious to try, but the value of them might be better kept as a tea.

Dry, woody bracket fungi (also called polypores) are the top choice. They are called bracket fungi because they sit on the side of a tree like a shelf or bracket. They are hard to pull off but are removed with a knife or a rock. Experts we’re spoken with from the group UK Wildfood Larder say it is okay to pull all parts of the mushroom out. There is no need to consider leaving the roots since the actual “roots” of the mushroom run deep in the forest as mycelium. Mushroom hunters typically cut the mushrooms clean to avoid dirt and bugs in their edible haul. Below is a list of some bracket fungi you can try as paper. Really any of them will do.

Angela from Foraging with Angela tells Green Prophet: “I’ve made mushroom leather from a few species, but I’ve found that Oak Maizegill is the one I get the best results from. They grow in my area (Cape Town SA) as an alien. Any bracts that aren’t poisonous should do. You can usually tell the kind of paper/leather you’ll end up with by the feel of the fresh mushroom.

“I didn’t use any glues or binders for the Maizegill paper, their natural fibers are sufficient. It makes a flexible, foldable, leathery paper. I just blend it with lots of water to make the slurry.”

And the paper, she notes, can be “more of a leather. Depending on the species.” See her video below.

Mushroom paper typically ranges from pale cream to deep tan, often carrying a subtle earthy aroma. No two sheets are alike—each piece carries the spirit of the forest into your art.

There is nothing like Japan’s craft, design and industry and where it meets on a bicycle

Souki, a Japanese company dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional craftsmanship, is offering a unique opportunity to experience the art of sock-making through interactive workshops in Koryo Town. Known for its rich history in textile production, Koryo Town serves as the perfect backdrop for this hands-on (well, foot’s on) activity, allowing participants to engage in the intricate process of creating high-quality socks.

At the heart of the workshop is SOUKI’s original system, CHARIX—a fascinating blend of tradition and innovation. This ingenious setup combines an actual knitting machine, once used in the factory, with a bicycle mechanism. By pedaling the bike, participants power the knitting machine, weaving their own socks in real-time.

This interactive approach not only makes learning fun but also offers a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship involved in sock production. It’s charming for children to see industry in action. When we were in Japan, my son saw a waffle machine, hand run, churn out waffles on the streets of Kyoto.

The workshop on socks provides an immersive experience, guiding participants through the complete process of sock-making. After the knitting phase, SOUKI’s skilled staff steps in to sew the toes and apply a press-finish, ensuring the socks are ready for wear. This firsthand exposure to the meticulous techniques of sock production highlights the precision and dedication required in the craft. Of course you can knit socks at home, but that takes a lot more skill, and experience.

Participants can select their preferred color combinations, crafting a unique pair tailored to their style. The result? A pair of low-gauge, ultra-soft socks that provide both comfort and warmth—perfect for everyday wear.

You spend so much time in your craft and money too – should you offer free shipping through platforms like Etsy?

With the development of modern business techniques, many organizations have revamped their strategies to stay relevant to the global market. In the era of digital marketing, websites and ecommerce stores are playing a strong role in providing an online market to the consumers. These platforms provide premium quality products to their customers at a reasonable price, which makes them popular among the digital audience.

Nowadays, free shipping has become extremely common amongst businesses as well. Companies view this as a great marketing strategy. Free shipping has indeed shown great results as 9 out of 10 buyers are attracted to those markets which offer free shipping. Free shipping has a positive psychological influence on the customers, as more than half of the customers look at the shipping fee before they proceed with their shopping spree.

Is the ‘Free Shipping’ Strategy Worth it?

Many businesses have taken on this strategy. It has become so ubiquitous that now customers expect free shipping almost every time they shop from any online platform. Hence, this strategy makes the online business market more competitive and upholds the customer’s requirements. With many brands opting this strategy, it is wise for small businesses to adopt it as well, in order to compete at the highest level. Nonetheless, even if no company has taken on this strategy, then it is a great opportunity for one’s business to utilize. With renowned platforms like Amazon making use of this strategy, the customers have become accustomed to free shipping hence, one’s business needs to stay competitive to be relevant in the market.

Though high numbers and good results can get one excited, companies often fail to understand that this is just one of the many promotional strategies and if the business is not able to handle such extra expenses, they can always opt for another way to promote their business. Many factors may prove that this strategy can become unsustainable for them. There is a high shipping fee over international orders, therefore, companies have to devise a blended strategy accordingly. But they cannot disregard such offers as well since they play a big part in the growth of the company.

Increasing Volume of Sales Through Free Shipping

If a business plays its cards right, it can tremendously increase its sales. Offering free shipping during the season of your top or best selling products can be profitable for the company. Next, set a threshold for free shipping, this will incentivize the customers to shop more till that mark is reached. However, make sure that the threshold is not set too high. Additionally, offer free shipping on returns, only if one’s business rarely gets returns. This tends to build trust between the two parties.

Another good technique would be to mention the amount of money that they have saved from free shipping. Once a company learns how to effectively play out this strategy, they will surely see ascending numbers in their sales. To get free shipping at checkout, customers can make use of online coupons, like Newegg promotion codes to acquire major discounts on a range of products. They provide a list of companies offering free shipping to make life easier for the customers.

Traditional broom makers from Ghassaniyeh in the southern district of Zahrani told Lebanon’s Daily Star that they once made a decent living making straw brooms using materials sourced from the local region. But now straw itself has become prohibitively expensive and the community is turning to cheap nylon or plastic brooms that don’t work as well, putting yet another cottage industry at risk of obscurity.

Armenian-style broom-making was first introduced to southern Lebanon 75 years ago, according to the Daily Star.

Hajj Abbas Atweh taught men living in Ghassaniyeh how to source straw, soak it, and then bundle up to 500 pieces into a cohesive unit. Once assembled, the pieces are cut to give it a polished, finished look.

The craft soon became a tradition that the entire family could take part in, including children and grandparents.

Mohammad Hodroj, who was among Atweh’s original students, told the paper that at one time his family produced as many as 15,000 brooms annually. The soft straw was sourced from Egypt, Iraq and Syria while hard straw, which is harder to cut and manipulate and used for cleaning brooms, came from Bulgaria and Hungary.

But now it costs $2,000 a pound to purchase the straw for a product that sells for little more than $2 and artisans are struggling to cope – so much so that they have appealed to the Ministry of Industry and Tourism to help protect their craft.

And in order to generate awareness and interest in what they do, artisans have begun to invite children from various schools in Lebanon to come and visit them.

It’s hard to be competitive when a Chinese factory can process lesser quality plastic or nylon brooms for a fraction of the cost, but Abu Khater claims that these products are much inferior to the traditional straw brooms.

In addition to being less effective, “synthetic materials can also damage the carpets and other home textiles, whereas the straw broom cleans the carpet gently,” Hussein Abu Khater told the paper.

With approximately 80 brooms under his belt each day, Abu Khater is not completely out of business, but he fears that he and other villagers dependent on the trade might soon become completely swept out of business by the cheaper competition and less robust design model.

Somehow we have to ensure that doesn’t happen.

The founder of Ateeq, which is Arabic for vintage, Diane Rayyan teamed up with crochet master Ishrat Khawja to hold a two day “trocheting” workshop. Weighing just under 20 pounds and made entirely from plastic, the bean bags are sold with other eco-goods to generate funds for low-income Saudi women.

The founder of Fruitful Fusion, Khawja lent her crocheting expertise to the Trochet, an environmental initiative that turns trash into treasure. Albeit slightly cleaner than Egypt or Lebanon, Saudi Arabia is inundated with plastic bags that make their way into waterways, public parks and even remote desert locations.

But there is an important social component to the project as well.

“I believe the mind and the hand have generally lost connection with each other through the years and with Ateeq I am trying to unblock this passage to unleash creativity and innovation,” says Rayyan.

Held at the Rawaj Center in Jeddah, the two day workshop resulted in a line of brain cancer ribbons made from recycled plastic. Dania Al Masri of Jeddah’s Backpack purchased the whole lot of them, which was a tremendous boon for the project.

“Because I can sense the pride in their work, hence empowering them in the least I can do,” Al Masri said of her purchase.

“It is a two-way benefit: If the community supports young entrepreneurs, the entrepreneurs will support the community. I believe empowering one another reinforces great values and it keeps the economy going.”

In times of stress, I turn to sewing and crafting. Colouring in and cutting out shapes, gluing, stitching and sticking things together is just so much fun that I can’t believe entire nations aren’t hooked on it. For a couple of hours you can forget you are an adult, with bills to pay and dishes to wash, and just make useful things. So, to help you celebrate and unwind this Ramadan I have scoured the internet for the best Ramadan-inspired crafting ideas for you to try. From beautiful banners, lovely lanterns to yummy Ramadan cookies, there’s something for everyone (of every crafting capability) to try.

Ramadan Wall Calendar

This lovely idea from Debbie Qalballah over at the ‘My So Called Life And Other Lies’ blog is just gorgeous. Made with the help of her adorable boys, this fabric wall chart is made up of little pockets with the days of Ramadan on the front. In the pockets which you can place chocolates or little toy treats for your kids (or yourself!) to enjoy at the end of the fasting day. The best thing is that you can use this over and over again and you can also make it using scraps of fabric you have lying around.

Night Lanterns

The night lantern is not only the symbol of Ramadan but is also a great way to light up your home at Sahoor (meal just before Muslims start fasting at sunrise). There really is no end to the variety and style of lantern you can craft although upcycling cans and jars does earn you some greenie points. There are some great instructions for a mosque-design over at Crafty Arab which is just chockablock with great ideas. If you are feeling particularly crafty, you can have a go at making the stunning lanterns I featured in the top image. Papermatrix have the full details and good luck!

Ramadan Banners, Mobiles and Garlands

Spruce up your home and really get into the Ramadan spirit with some hand-made Ramadan banners and gorgeous sun and moon garlands. All you need to make these is paper, scissors, strings and a little bit of creativity. Place the banners and garlands next to a window or over a door for maximum effect. If you have kids, this also makes a great crafting activity to keep them busy so that you can enjoy some quiet time during daylight hours. You can even download and print some designs from Ramadan Joy.

Ramadan Peace Pack

I think this is great idea to help Muslims share Ramadan with their neighbours or colleagues who may not know a lot about Ramadan. The ‘Ramadan Peace’ pack is an idea I found at the Ramadan Joy site and it basically consists of a moon-shaped cookie (or any other Ramadan-inspired shape) in a hand-made packet which includes a note which briefly explains what Ramadan is all about. I think it’s great- yummy and informative.

Fantastic Felt Ideas

I admit I have a soft spot for all things woolen or felt so I have gathered my favourite Ramadan-inspired things made out of the soft stuff. Ramadan Joy have a range of felt banners and bags and you could also get really creative and make a mosque-shaped tea cozy. Ramadan Joy crafter Khadija has got a blog with showcases a range of designs you can use to make your very own stunning little tea cozy.

Egypt’s hottest new environmentally-conscious designer Manar Moursi studied in two of America’s most prestigious academic institutions before founding Studio Meem – a sassy and sustainable design studio based in Cairo. Leaving the stoic traditions of Princeton University and UVA behind, Moursi is now making green waves in her home country.

Studio Meem

Despite being a fairly young firm, this week the studio is already displaying their inaugural project at the annual Design is a Verb exhibition set up by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Arts Center. PALMCRATE Off the Gireed is comprised of a vibrant series of lamps, tables and other unique pieces constructed out of organic palm fiber by local artisans. Hit the jump to learn more about the studio and its talented founder.

Chic street sensibility

Made possible in part by a 2011 British Council Grant for artists and quite a lot of gumption, Studio Meem strives to design distinctly Egyptian products with a chic street sensibility. Creating a bridge between local artisans and designers, the studio relies on locally and sustainably-sourced materials, but never compromises either quality or style.

“All our products embody a perfect balance between unique design-know-how and traditional artisanal craftsmanship,” according to the studio’s website literature.

PALMCRATE Off the Gireed recently won a coveted Red Dot Design Award. It has also been awarded a 2011 Good Design award by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture, Art Design and Urban Studies.

The sustainable route

Although Moursi has worked on satellite cities in Kuwait and interior design for river Nile cruise boats, it is telling that she has switched her focus to creating a sustainability ethos within the Egyptian context. Such leadership is badly needed in this country, although we are happy to report that the newly-invigorated local populace is slowly taking up the mandate to forge ecologically and socially-responsible businesses.

Critics might consider design among the most frivolous concerns given the many other challenges that Egyptians face, but Studio Meem’s work is no less important as it creates meaningful job opportunities and ensures a certain level of long-term self-sufficiency.

Plus, an increase in lighthearted, quirky projects such as these might permit a touch of color to crack through the darkness that has shrouded Egypt for far too long.

IKEA Israel won’t even sell incandescent light bulbs any more, and people are gradually switching to more energy efficient compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs). No need to toss the baby out with the bathwater, though – those incandescent bulbs can still be useful. Read on for 5 great ways to turn those old bulbs into something new – including a how-to tutorial on making a light bulb terrarium.

1. Upcycled Light Bulb Terrarium

As shown in the photo above, a light bulb terrarium is literally a green way to reuse an old incandescent bulb. These small terrariums are a bright gift idea and are perfect for decorating a desk, shelf, or window sill. Check out instructions on how to pull this off at Instructables.

2. Light Bulb Christmas Ornaments

Ho ho ho and and an old halogen light bulb (or other form of incandescent bulb). With the Christmas season upon us, some upcyclers may be looking for ways to make Christmas ornaments. Light bulbs are easily personalized and decorated with yuletide cheer. Get some inspiration at Instructables.

3. Converting Light Bulbs into Chemical Glassware

A more scientific project would be to convert your old light bulbs into chemical glassware. This idea is not new (it was published in Popular Science in 1933, as seen above), but it’s still relevant. Check out the full instructions at Modern Mechanix.

4. Light Bulb Hanging Vase

Small, clear, and vase-shaped already, old incandescent light bulbs are easily transformed into miniature vases. You could either build a stand for the bulb, or have it hang with thread or wire. Place a flower plucked from your garden in the bulb vase, or alternatively you could use it to keep your basil fresh. Easy instructions can be found at Instructables.

5. Light Bulb Oil Lamp

Brooklyn-based designer Sergio Silva sells similar light bulb oil lamps for a hefty sum, but you can make your own with fairly basic equipment. Make a single oil lamp or a set of nine as an alternative and upcycled Hannukah menorah. Learn how at Instructables.

Note: Before attempting any of these projects, make sure that you have safely hollowed out the wiring from the light bulb.

Sustainable Israeli designer Aya Tager will be giving upcycling workshops in Tel Aviv in a couple weeks, but for those who can’t make it she is giving an online workshop right here on Green Prophet! Aya (aka Aya Kaya) teaches us how to turn old t-shirts and tank tops into cloth bags that can be used in multiple ways. (For those of you about to gift Christmas or Hannukah presents, this bag may be a great eco-friendly alternative to disposable wrapping paper.)

No sewing experience or fancy equipment necessary! For this easy 4-step project you will need: an old t-shirt or tank top, scissors, needle and thread, and old socks.

Step 1: Fold the shirt so that the sleeves are one on top of the other (you can use the side seams as guides). Then cut out the sleeves and excess fabric at the top of the shirt, so that it will resemble handles.

Step 2: Stitch the bottom to close the bag. You can use a different colored thread to make the bag more decorative (in the photo above Aya has used red thread on white cloth).

The basic bag is now done and you can add details.

Step 3: One way to decorate the bag is to continue the stitching from the bottom of the shirt around the edges of the entire bag.

You could also use old colorful socks to thicken the fabric around the handles. This will help use up other old fabrics and make the handles of the bag sturdier.

The socks can also be turned into a decorative flower or bow tie.

Step 4: Your bag is done! It can now be used as a lightweight and reusable shopping bag the next time you go food shopping, as a lunch bag to take to work or school, or as an alternative form of gift wrap during the holiday season!

The Jewish holiday of Hannukah celebrates the miracle of a single day’s supply of oil lasting for eight days of lighting, and is beloved by environmentalists who appreciate the energy efficiency aspect of the holiday. Sustainable designers have taken the energy efficiency aspect of Hannukah and integrated it into eco-friendly and upcycled Hannukah menorah designs. While beautiful and made using materials that would otherwise end up in landfills, those upcycled Hannukah menorahs are only used once a year. During this year’s Jewish festival of lights, sustainable designer Aya Tager will teach workshops on how to upcycle glass jars into lanterns that can be used all year long.

Whereas Hannukah served as the inspiration for Tager to make upcycled lanterns, she said that she specifically chose to use glass jars because “glass can be recycled but the process requires high energy consumption.”

“My first recommendation,” Tager continues, “is to re-use glass jars (for example when making a home made jam) and since most of us have several used jars the next recommendation is to upcycle them from ‘just’ a package into a lovely object we can use again and again.”

Tager’s workshops are intended “to teach kids and adults how to turn objects they think are of no use anymore into useful, personalized and great looking items without spending lots of money or using extra energy.”

Her two upcycling workshops were organized in collaboration with Tel Aviv’s Achoti Fair Trade shop and Bait Banamal in the Tel Aviv port, and will take place on the afternoons of December 25th and 28th.

For more information about the workshops and to register (registration required) call the Achoti fair trade shop at 077-4011271.
