<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The large group of scientists from a number of Taiwan research organizations including the </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Taipei Medical University Hospital, found that incense use can cause cancer, breathing problems, heart disease and neurological disorders. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They reported their findings in the <em>Journal of Inflammation Research</em> (<a href="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/incense-human-health.pdf">links to PDF here</a>). </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some findings: “Notably, exposure to incense burning during pregnancy may have profound neural effects in offspring,” the researchers write. </span></p>

Similarly, by using nationwide data set from Taiwan Birth Cohort Study, delayed gross motor milestone achievement was found among infants born in homes with incense burning.&#8221;</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;Through a case control study of children of ages 10 years and under in Los Angeles County, a significant increased risk of leukemia was found among children whose parents had burned incense more than once a week at home during pregnancy or nursing period, which still remained after adjusting for confounding variables such as parental occupational exposure, parent use of garden sprays, or parent use of household pesticides,” they report.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;Evidences suggest that incense burning might affect all stages of lives, from pre-conception to old age, with multiple health effects. Much work has been done in order to explore the toxicities status of burning incense in association with human health. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;Although underlying mechanisms remain still in the primary stages of study, oxidative stress and associated inflammatory responses seem to be the plausible pathophysiological pathways underlying the adverse effects of incense smoke,&#8221; they add.</span></p>
<p>Researchers in Nepal also warn about incense use, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7654492/">likening it to smoking</a>. </p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Notably, the Taiwan researchers say collectively, &#8220;tobacco smoking has been also well recognized as an oxidative stressor that induces the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, which in turn leads to damages to the body.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;Since both incense smoke and tobacco smoke may affect the biological systems through the same pathway, it would not be surprising that the effects of incense smoke in ever or current smokers are different from those in never smokers, but in varying ways.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Incense, depending on what it is made from can include metals and other compounds that can severely affect one&#8217;s health.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Taiwanese researchers are aware that it will be difficult to intervene in Asian religious practice. They consider taxes on incense to encourage less use, but know that contraband and cheaper products will infiltrate the black market and cause more damage possibly. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They note: “Rather, the situation can be improved by establishing the guidelines for safer practice of incense burning. For instance, it was reported that the emission and health risk may differ among housing conditions. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“In cases where incense burning is unavoidable, every attempt must be made to improve the indoor air quality, such as reducing the amount of incense burned, enlarging the space, facilitating the ventilation, and selecting health-friendly incense products.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With Covid probably here to stay we need to be extra careful about using incense. Alternatives suggested is vapor or smoke-like products that look like incense but which do not release particulate matter, along with essential oils or natural smells. These alternatives may provide comfort to those familiar with every day incense use. They also suggest using an app that creates a video to look like incense burning but are doubtful as to whether people would really use this option. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A workshop isn’t much different from a video series or fitness regime — you’re still instructing people. The difference is that you’re providing a comprehensive overview of a specific issue or problem in a workshop.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Workshops provide value that you can charge for or offer for free to your members. If non-members want to sign up, by all means, charge a fee for the workshop, and they might end up paying for a membership to your fitness studio.</span></p>

<p class="p3">Most people trust their doctor’s advice. However, in the United States, many doctors feel beholden to certain <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/double-dip-doctors-paid-to-advise-promote-drug-companies-that-fund-research"><span class="s1">pharmaceutical companies or medical suppliers that help them pay their bills</span></a>. This has led to a deteriorating trust between physicians and the general public. False reports of vaccine side effects and complications have only worsened the situation in many segments of the population. As a result, some patients are seeking alternative health treatments for their chronic conditions.</p>
<p class="p3">This is not to say that no alternative treatment is effective or beneficial. In fact, there are many <a href="https://www.greenprophet.com/2019/07/5-ways-to-use-non-psychoactive-cannabis-for-health-wellbeing/"><span class="s1">non-traditional treatments</span></a> that are still relatively new and are therefore not commonly implemented but are nonetheless effective. For example, <span class="s1">stem cells for knees</span> can help regenerate and repair lost cartilage more safely than traditional knee replacement surgery.</p>
<p class="p3">However, not every alternative treatment is as effective as stem cells. This is especially true when it comes to cancer treatments. Cancer is one of the most common killers in the world, but there are hundreds of different types of cancer that can affect individuals in unique ways. Therefore, “cure-all” alternative treatments simply don’t work.</p>
<p class="p3">Large cancer organizations have even gone on a campaign to teach people about the dangers of alternative cancer treatments. While there’s nothing wrong with getting a second (or third) opinion from a licensed healthcare professional, you should not be self-treating conditions like cancer. Many of these “cures” can be found online for far less money than traditional cancer treatment, making them seem like enticing opportunities.</p>
<p class="p3">Sadly, most (if not all) of these products and treatments are scams. Cancer is a complex condition that can’t be cured with a natural topical or vitamins. Instead, you will need to seek out a comprehensive treatment that is proven to be effective.</p>
<p class="p3">You may think that the vast majority of people know how to differentiate between legitimate medical advice and a scam. Though you’re technically right, <a href="https://www.cancer.org/latest-news/the-truth-about-alternative-medical-treatments.html"><span class="s1">nearly 40% of people in the United States alone think that their cancer can be cured through alternative therapies</span></a>. This means that millions of Americans are actively avoiding real treatment because they believe in alternative treatments that have little or no scientific backing.</p>
<p class="p3">It’s important to note that cancer is not the only condition that attracts many people to alternative treatments and therapies. People seek alternative treatments for everything from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) to back injury. Oftentimes, when patients don’t like the existing treatment options offered by physicians, they look for alternatives online. After all, why undergo a risky or painful surgery when you could just take some pills you found from an online vendor?</p>
<p class="p3">However, it’s not always about seeking out different treatments. The reality is that healthcare in many countries is extraordinarily expensive. In other cases, treatment for certain conditions may not even be available in your city, country, or region. This can lead desperate people to look for low-cost alternatives that, more often than not, yield almost no results.</p>
<p class="p3">Despite their popularity, alternative health treatments are hit and miss. Those approved by health officials are great, but you should take caution with anything that has not undergone scientific testing. Hopefully, campaigns against medical misinformation will gain more traction, while legitimate alternative treatments will become more commonplace in health clinics around the world.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Two years ago I took my family to India for a holiday. I didn’t have any expectations but I knew that something would change in me. India is the place for that people would tell me over the years, and as the birthplace of yoga it’s the ideal way for you to jump into yoga as a beginner or as a seasoned practitioner. People that do end up wanting to take their yoga to the next level do end up travelling to India –– to Pune or Rishikesh –– one of the spiritual centers. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I found myself at neither of those places but at a cafe-cum-community center called </span><a href="https://www.greenprophet.com/2019/05/make-artjuna-cafe-your-first-stop-in-goa-india/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Artjuna in Goa</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, where I met Ian, a yoga teacher. Two years ago I jumped into yoga again after leaving it for more than 15 years. Now in my 40s I see some amazing changes in myself. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Since starting yoga and being with Ian every day for 5 weeks, first off it gave me a mission while travelling. I put my kids in a local school </span><a href="https://www.greenprophet.com/2018/03/re-schooling-in-goa-at-the-holistic-yellow-school/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Yellow School </span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">run by hippies and took my morning class. It was hot and sweaty and there were ants on the floor here and there, agriculture brush burning in the background every morning, but after the session I felt good and strong and found myself reaching for healthier food, like salads, every day. After 5 weeks there was a transformation. But it wasn’t only in the way I looked. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some months after we returned from India my dad who had travelled with us started complaining about a pain in his back. After some complicated weeks in the summer we found out that he had cancer and it would be a difficult and fast disease. We would lose my dad 5 months later. And I think that journey with him, from diagnosis to palliative care gave me post-traumatic stress that I am trying to deal with. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 1em;">Yoga helped me deal with the crisis then, and still deal with the crisis now –– sometimes I even amused my dad from his hospital bed (and the nurses too) when I stood on my head. It helped us deal with the long hours of visiting each other and it helped me calm down to sleep through the night beside him. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 1em;">I sometimes cry on my yoga mat in practice, and a few tears slipped out of the corner of my eyes this morning thinking about my dad. But yoga helps you deal in a few ways:</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Most of our life is spent running around with our lives. From here to there. Carpooling the kids if you have them; running from one meeting or social activity to the other if you don’t -– or also do! Life today moves faster than it ever did. Yoga helps you quieten, sit for a moment, listen to yourself and recenter. It gives you space to remember, face your fears or loss and look at it. Yoga helps us move in human-scale time. Not robot time, not AI time, not a NY minute.</span></p>
<h2><b>Yoga builds your immune system</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">All of the asanas or yoga poses affect and stimulate your vagus nerve which runs from your head down your spine. It simply makes you healthier in stressful situations that might, God forbid, also cause you to get sick. </span></p>
<h2><b>Yoga helps you move forward</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In a way, and this is probably a spiritual matter, beyond body resilience, practicing the asanas puts the mind-body continuum in its rightful place. Dramas no longer needs to be so dramatic. Other people’s problems irritate you less. You might have more compassion. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of the things I might like to do one day when my kids are older is take a </span><a href="http://www.vinyasayogatraining.com"><span style="font-weight: 400;">yoga teacher training course in India</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. A simple one is 200 hours, but there are 300 and 500 hours too. Some people emerge with a Yoga Alliance certification –- depending on the one you want. Like in SCUBA diving there are different associations. Now I wouldn’t do it because I don&#8217;t want to be a teacher (I mean, well I am to my kids, I guess) &#8230; I don’t want to open a studio –– but I&#8217;d be interested in a teacher course because I crave that me time. A teacher training class, if you do it in a place like India, can be a 4-week vacation to yourself, not from yourself or your problems. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you are into yoga you will know what I mean. You can find classes for students of all skill levels, so no need to worry about how you are going to look in hot pink yoga pants from Lululemon. I wear Iyengar pants that look like an unsexy diaper. But I know that the serious yoga schools will not only help you with exercise and movement, they will give you life skills in how to eat, breath and basically live this one great life. </span></p>
