It comes every year on Saturday 19 March, as the clock strikes 8:30 PM around the globe. It’s a worldwide movement that aims to unite the global community on a broad range of environmental issues, working on a grassroots level to enact mass behavioral change. Join the fun by turning off non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol for your commitment to the planet.

Organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the event launched in 2007 as a singular “lights-off” event in Sydney, Australia and has since grown to engage more than 7,000 cities and towns worldwide. WWF reported that last year, a record-breaking 172 countries and territories took part, with about 10,400 participating landmarks going dark for an hour.

Earth Hour aims that by darkening our rooms we will enlighten our awareness of the opportunities and challenges of creating a sustainable world.

According to the event website, the movement has racked up some tangible achievements:

WWF Uganda started the world’s first Earth Hour Forest

More than 250,000 Russians voiced support for better protection of their country’s seas and forests

Argentina used its 2013 Earth Hour campaign to help pass a Senate bill for a 3.4 million hectare Marine Protected Area in the country

Thousands of wood-saving stoves were distributed to families in Madagascar

Solar-powered lights were installed in three villages without electricity in India

In Paraguay, WWF used the Earth Hour platform to build public support to gain an extension of the logging moratorium, helping to reduce deforestation

Education programs for schools were launched in Thailand and Taiwan

Hundreds of thousands of LED lights were installed by girl scouts in the USA

More than 2123 mitigation actions submitted by Earth Hour City Challenge 2014 participating cities

It’s symbolic. The organizers don’t measure resultant reductions in power consumption or greenhouse gas emissions. It seems especially effective when children participate; a powerful way to convey climate change issues in a visually memorable way. But is it a bit too much of “child’s play” to incite radical change among the world’s largest energy consumers? Now in its tenth year, the one-hour event continues to be the key driver of the wider environmental movement.

If you’re reading this now from Egypt, Jordan, Israel or Lebanon – go flip off the power and come back in 30 minutes. Missed the hour in your local time zone? Self-direct, and pick another hour to switch off. Or drop some cash to the cause via their website donation tab.

Spurred on by the annual Earth Hour campaign, the airports’ action will save an estimated 300,000kw hours of energy and 129 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. A solid contribution by one of the world’s largest carbon-emitting industries!

Earth Hour took place globally on March 29, but the airports’ operator kicked off compliance early stretching the event to over 3 weeks of green behavior. The shutdown didn’t affect services within the buildings, which begs the question why were so many lights installed in the first place?

Blame the designers, and short-sighted airport operators who place aesthetics above the environment. It’s so easy to do both! (See how Saudi’s Hajj Terminal achieved this over thirty years ago – link here.)

Airports that embrace conservation see an immediate cash payoff. Energy efficiency projects (energy management systems, installing high efficiency lighting and occupancy sensors) have slashed Dubai Airports’ electricity and fuel costs by $4.33 MIL, cut water use by over 130 million gallons, and saved more than 72,000 tons of CO2. A win-win for operational and maintenance budgets and for the planet.

In the US and EU, stringent governmental regulations demand a minimum level of project environmental performance, and robust environmental assessment is compulsive during project planning and permitting processes which are overseen by national environmental authorities. Building codes, typically reflecting internationally accepted standards, mandate minimum energy efficiency characteristics for materials and equipment.

Major new airport terminal projects are underway in Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi, with continued airport expansion in Jordan. But in the Middle East, absent mature environmental agencies with strong governance over large capital building projects, conservation gets fitted into designs only if a designer convinces the client of it’s importance, or if that client is especially savvy to its benefits.

Safe to say it doesn’t happen unless the operator specifically demands it. And they usually don’t, until well after the project is over and the utility bills start to arrive.

Here’s hoping Dubai Airports sets a new trend that embodies an old UK adage: a penny saved is a penny earned. What’s good for an airport’s pockets turns out to be great for the world.

The first Earth Hour took place in 2007. Since then, it has blossomed into a massive global celebration that sees not only millions of individuals hitting the switch for an hour, but major landmarks as well.

Every year, the Burj Khalifa switches off and this year, for the first time, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque) in Istanbul and the Hagia Sophia and Bosphorous Bridge that connects Europe and Asia will be switching of as well.

In Jordan, a candlelit march will take place on one of the city’s oldest streets in Jabal Amman, and the lights of Al Karak Castle will be switched off as well.

Related: Why Earth Hour still matters

Small events will take place in Egypt and Iran and other countries across the Middle East and North Africa – all you have to do is head over to WWF’s Earth Hour site to find out how you can get involved in your own community or country.

And if there isn’t an event, make one! Or have your own private party in the dark.

Whatever you choose to do, remember this. While Earth Hour is a symbolic international gathering designed to celebrate a healthier planet, the idea is to get people thinking about ways that they can reduce their footprint for the long term.

“It’s a brilliant reminder that together we can make change happen, and it gives us a chance to think about the small things we can do everyday to help create a brighter future,” writes WWF.

“So whether you reflect under the stars or celebrate by candlelight, it’s a moment to say you’ll do your bit to protect our planet – not just for one hour, but every day.”

This year’s Earth Hour takes place on March 29, from 8.30-9.30pm (local time.)

Will you switch off?

Writing for Slate magazine, Bjorn Lomborg argues against what he believes to be the futility of Earth Hour. But Mr. Lomborg’s inability to see the value in such collective environmental efforts makes a compelling case for why we need them. As I pointed out here in Green Prophet, modern electric lights are thousands of times more efficient than ancient candles. Mr. Lomborg is also correct that today’s centralized coal power plants are unable to efficiently cope with a short-lived drop in demand. But this points to a failure our energy infrastructure, not in the Earth Hour concept. So, what is the true value of Earth Hour?

Earth Hour, a time when we switch off our lights together for one hour, won’t solve the world’s energy problems any more than Lent and Ramadan will eliminate world hunger and thirst. But before anyone criticizes the value of this largely symbolic effort, consider the fact that we are living in a world of symbols where paper currencies hide true environmental costs. Our great-grandparents endured the smell of kerosene, soot-stained ceilings and coal-dust inside of their homes.

But modern technology conceals our generation’s environmental impacts in faraway smokestacks, pit mines and landfills where we can’t see them. It traps us in a comfortable cocoon of soundproofed SUVs, bottled water and air conditioning. It shields us from both the positive and negative impacts of our actions.

The glare of our glorified technology also blinds us to the light of our universe and to the plight of earth’s three billion poor. In our fictional world, the cost of shipping food thousands of miles is negligible and the cost of repairing a product always exceeds its cost of manufacture. In this pretend world, an individual has no impact on earth’s environment.

We have learned a toxic combination of indifference and helplessness. We also live a fiction that technology can solve a problem that has its roots in human nature.

Earth Hour helps us to see through this social hallucination and understand that, though technology is a great comfort to the self-absorbed masses, it is not all there is to being human.

This temporary interruption of our technological lives helps us to connect with one another and see that through community we can amplify our positive impacts on this fragile earth. So join us in turning off your lights at 8:30 P.M. local time on Saturday March 23.

Enjoy the stars, moon, Jupiter and comet Panstarrs in the western sky. Be thankful that these haven’t been turned into pay-per-view commercial products. If you notice that even one neighbor has followed your example, thank them and understand that your individual actions, no matter how small, can make a positive difference.

For as Margarete Mead put it, “Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world; indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.”

International Space Station view of Dubai Light Pollution on February 22, 2012. Can we change the world by switching off for an hour?

People from all over the world are encouraged to turn off their lights for Earth Hour, which takes place on Saturday March, 31 2012 at 8:30 pm local time (check the Earth Hour website for details of your home country). The first Earth Hour was organized in Sydney, Australia in 2007 by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). By 2011, millions of people across 137 countries participated in this reminder of our ability to change the world for the better.

The Stars are Still There

A few weeks ago I spent a night in a small town on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean and was relieved to see that the same wonderful stars I grew up with are still there, even though all but a handful are invisible for much of the world’s population. If weather permits, Earth Hour gives city dwellers the opportunity to sample the lost beauty of the night sky. Celebrate Earth Hour the moment the sun sets for a truly stellar performance. This sky map shows the Western sky from Beirut, Lebanon during the beginning of Earth Hour at 17:30 UTC.

Jupiter, Venus and the moon in the West from Beirut, Lebanon during Earth Hour

See Four Bright Planets in An Hour

Jupiter, king of the planets, is the first bright “star” above where the sun set. Even a pair of binoculars or a carefully held toy telescope will reveal a string of bright pearls off to the side. When Galileo saw these, he thanked God for allowing him to be the one who discovered what are now known as Jupiter’s Galilean moons.

Next in the lineup is Venus, the Greek and Roman goddess of love. She outshines every star in the night sky. She might even be visible from Abu Dhabi, but find a darker place to really appreciate the beauty of the only planet bright enough to cast a shadow on earth. She is a hottie, her thick corrosive atmosphere gives us a frightening example of the greenhouse effect taken to an extreme. Her surface temperature of 500C would melt lead. The days are very long on Venus, equal to 243 Earth days and slightly longer than its year. It also rotates backwards so that the sun rises in the west and sets in the east.

Look slightly above Venus and you’ll see a small cluster of pretty stars, the Pleiades, also known as the seven sisters of Andromeda. In binoculars this conjunction between the Pleiades and Venus will be wonderful.

Continue along the line from Jupiter through Venus and you’ll see the gibbous moon. Further along this line you’ll see Mars high in the East. It isn’t nearly as bright as Venus, but it shines steady and reddish amongst the stars of Leo. Wait until the end of Earth hour and if your Eastern horizon is clear, you’ll see golden Saturn rising in the east.

It is no coincidence that all of these planets and our moon lie along a line which passes from west to east. This line (red in the image) is called the ecliptic. It is the plane the planets orbit within. During the spring equinox, the earths equator tilts through the plane of the ecliptic, so for those near the equator, the planets lie along a path which reaches almost directly overhead from west to east.

Mideast Light Pollution From Above

On February 22nd, astronauts aboard the international space station used an ordinary Nikon camera with a 400mm lens to take a photo of the light pollution of Dubai. The lights around Burj Khalifa far outshine an already overly-bright city. Tomorrow night ISS astronauts intend to take more photos from space and tweet their observations. What will they see? Each and every one of us can make a difference to the health and beauty of our home planet.

For the past four years, Istanbul’s majestic Bosphorus Bridge has been lit all night long by an LED display that consumes electricity at a rate of 90 kilowatts. (That’s roughly 400 megawatt-hours per year, which is approximately the amount of energy consumed by 200 average Turks, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.) But tonight, its glittering reflection will disappear from the Bosphorus — for one hour.

The bridge will fall dark in honor of Earth Hour 2011, a four-year-old tradition established by the WWF to raise awareness about the urgent need to conserve energy and thereby cut back on greenhouse gas emissions, the leading contributors to climate change.

This tribute to energy-efficiency is sorely needed in Turkey, where greenhouse-gas emissions rose by approximately 120 percent from 1990 to 2007: the greatest increase in emissions of any country in the world, according to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Turkish participation in Earth Hour 2011 is expected to be double what it was last year, according to Tolga Baştak, the general director of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Turkey. Baştak expects 10,000 individuals in 40 separate provinces across the country to switch off their lights between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. tonight, he told Turkish paper The Hurriyet Daily News.

“The number of people in Turkey who support this struggle against climate change… is not to be underestimated at all,” said Baştak.

Turks will join citizens of Israel, Abu Dhabi, and many more countries around the world in dimming their lights for Earth Hour 2011.

Besides the Bosphorus Bridge, other Turkish landmarks with rapacious energy appetites, such as Ankara’s Opera House and the Istanbul headquarters of the Turkish conglomerate Sabancı Holding, will also go dark for Earth Hour.

The hour has been observed on the last Saturday of March since it began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. At first just a Sydney-wide phenomenon, support for the event quickly grew, and 128 countries participated last year. Egypt even turned off the lights that usually illuminate the Great Pyramids of Giza. In Istanbul, two of the city’s swankiest hotels offered a “candlelit dinner” during Earth Hour 2010, and featured an organic wine on their menus in honor of the occasion.

On March 26, 2011, 71 government, public, and private organizations in Abu Dhabi will join the World Wildlife Fund’s international initiative to switch off the lights for Earth Hour. In keeping with a host of the Emirate’s day-to-day energy-saving initiatives including the “Turn-it-off campaign,” several businesses will turn off their lights between 8.30 and 9.30 p.m. Khaleej Times reports 14 major hotel chains are among those that will participate.

Designed to draw attention to the dire need to reduce electricity consumption and the powerful impact of just a few small gestures, Earth Hour has become an international sensation. Although this year’s event may be eclipsed in part by the ongoing vitriol besieging Bahrain, Libya, and Yemen in particular, Abu Dhabi is forging ahead.

Emirates Palace, the Sheraton, Crown Plaza, and the Hilton hotel are among the hotels that plan to participate.

Representatives of the Sheraton Hotel explained to Khaleej that they will turn off their exterior signage lighting, dim or turn off non-essential interior lights, and use candlelights in some public areas. They will also leave explanatory notes inside each room to explain the purpose of turning off. Also on offer will be candlelit dinner and “green” cocktails.

Similarly, the Emirates Palace hotel will turn off their interior and exterior decorative lighting.

“We are keen on energy efficiency procedures in all phases of work, and the Emirates Palace even won international awards in this area as we use environment-friendly materials, which reduce energy consumption,” the general manager of the hotel Hans Olbertz told the paper.

The cool Eco Chicks of Abu Dhabi are also getting involved: they are inviting interested energy savers to walk along the Abu Dhabi Corniche. They will meet at the parking lot near the Hilton hotel at 6.45pm, with Dubai Drummers in tow, and encourage participants to bring along homemade lanterns. And if you bring an old incandescent bulb, you’ll receive a friendlier replacement for free.

Go forth and conquer, all ye eco-warriors.

20 Israeli cities will be participating in this year’s annual lights-out Earth Hour.

Following an initiative that began in Australia in 2007, Israeli cities (spearheaded by Tel Aviv) have observed Earth Hour for the past few years. Earth Hour is a global movement that urges individuals, businesses and governments to support action on climate change by powering down their lights for an hour – at the same time. Thankfully, this year is no different and 18 Israeli cities will be turning off their lights on Thursday evening between the hours of 8pm-9pm.

Tel Aviv has traditionally observed Earth Hour by gathering residents in Rabin Square for a free biodiesel and/or cyclist-energy-powered concert by a popular musician, and this year will be no different as The Giraffes (seen in the clip above) will be performing together with Carolina and Red Band.

Israel will be observing Earth Hour two days earlier than the rest of the world this year, but nevertheless joining around 6000 cities that are powering their lights down this week.

Lights will be turned off during different times around Israel:

20:00 – Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Yerucham, Modi’in-Maccabim-Reut
20:10 – Jerusalem, Dimona
20:20 – Petach Tikva, Nes Tsiona, Ra’anana
20:30 – Netanya, Rehovot, Arad, Eilat, Yavne
20:40 – Ashdod, Givataim, Herzlia, Bat Yam
20:50 – Holon, Haifa, Yokneam

So if you are so inclined, join thousands of others in making a small change with a potentially big impact on Thursday.

According to the Earth Hour website, “Earth Hour aims to educate the global community about the threat of climate change and how easy it is for individuals and businesses to make small changes to the way they live and operate – small changes that will make a big difference.”

In the first few months of each year, we report on several special days and hours: there’s World Water Day on March 22nd, Earth Hour on the last Saturday of March, and Earth Day on April 22nd. The next earth-themed day – World Environment Day (WED) – will be celebrated on June 5th. We think of these as living memorials to our planet. Just as we set aside time to honor saints and leaders, environment days similarly create punctuations in our routines. However, rather than meditate on the sacrifice and wisdom of our leaders, we reflect instead on our collective responsibility to protect everybody’s earth.

WED in Rwanda

Designed to pique international concern for environmental issues, the first WED day was initiated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 and gave rise to the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP). Each year, WED has a unique theme, and is hosted by a different country. Sweden was the first, while 2010’s “International Year of Biodiversity” commemoration will be hosted in Rwanda. An important eco-region known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” this African country is home to the Gorilla, whose existence is imperiled by habitat loss and poaching.

Gorillas: A Symbol of Dwindling Ecosystems

According to UNEP, “the fate of the great apes is closely tied to ours as they inhabit some of the last remaining tropical rainforests – ecosystems that not only assist in supplying us with water, food and medicine but also play a global role in carbon sequestration and thus combating climate change.” Therefore, any effort to protect the Gorilla corresponds to an effort to protect our own habitat as well.

Which brings us to our role in WED. This day is not only relegated to large government or non-government organizations. UNEP encourages every conscientious individual and every organized action to contribute to the global momentum, to use our sweeping networking tools to voice our restorative will. And if you think that individual voices go unheard, allow the details of the world’s largest mass participation event in history to persuade you otherwise.

The Power of People United

Funded by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour took root in Sydney in 2007. According to earthhour.org, 2.2 million people and 2,000 businesses switched off their lights for one hour that first year. The following year, 50 million people in 400 cities did the same. In 2009, Earth Hour spread to 4,000 cities and towns, while this year a record “… 128 countries and territories joined the global display of climate action… People across the world from all walks of life turned off their lights and came together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet.”

While this event amounts to substantial energy savings (imagine what we could do if we switched off every night?), the most important thing to realize is the power of united individuals to steer the course of climate change.

For this World Environment Day, use your powerful voice to support biodiversity: arrange a clean up in your area. Encourage your friends and family to stop using plastic bags. Plant a tree. Plant a community garden. Conduct a workshop on how to curtail water use, an especially precious resource in the Middle East. And then register your WED activity here, and UNEP will donate $10 to Gorilla conservation and protection. Every action counts.

Earth Hour wasn’t the only way that Israel celebrated Earth Day this past Thursday – it was also the day that Life and Environment warded its annual Green and Black Globe awards. Taking place for the seventh year in a row this year, the award recognizes the positive efforts of Israeli environmental organizations, activists, groups, and companies. It also recognizes, however, parties responsible for actions that harm the environment.

This year’s Black Globe was awarded to Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, for his proposed environmental planning reform. Environmentalists claim that this plan would reduce public involvement in environmental planning and give more power to local planning committees (which are often less reliable than national planning committees).

But on to more positive endeavors.

The Committee to Save Palmahim Beach, a small organization formed to prevent the construction of a 350 vacation apartment complex on the beach, was awarded a Green Globe for its efforts to protect open spaces.

The Green Globe Volunteer Award went to Amit Mendelson, an engineer and urban planner, who has been working towards protecting open spaces in the country’s central region.

PowerSines (read more about them here) won the Green Globe Award for the business sector. The company, based on Or Yehuda, has developed a technology that ensures that the exact necessary amount of voltage is sent to lighting systems and electric motors, potentially saving consumers approximately 38% in electricity consumption.

The Jewish-Arab group, the Public Committee to Protect the Environment in Kfar Kanna, Mashhad and Mitzpe Hoshaya, was awarded a Green Globe for successfully preventing an aluminum casting factory from being built in the Tziporit industrial area. The construction of the factory would have seriously polluted the region.

Good Water Neighbors, Friends of the Middle East was recognized for its strides in environmental education. To date, this incredible organization has created partnerships between 25 Israeli, Jordanian, and Palestinian communities.

Sharon Nissim was awarded the Civil Servant Green Globe for her efforts to rehabilitate the polluted Kishon Stream.

The Urban Sustainability Green Globe went to Community Gardens (like the one for seniors we wrote about)- an effort that began in Jerusalem and which has spread to cities all over the country. Approximately 200 community gardens are currently active throughout Israel, and are an important statement about the potential for urban sustainability.
