Sustainable furniture design has been creeping into the Israeli art world over the past few years, with eco friendly furniture being exhibited at Jerusalem’s Design Week recently and other recycled works being displayed at international shows of Israeli design such as the Bezalel Academy student show at Milan Design Week. Entering the local auction market for perhaps the first time though, recycled furniture pieces made by Israeli designers are participating in a sale that will take place at Tiroche Auction House in Herzlia on January 28th. The auction will include pieces created by Junktion Studio, Tal Gur, Adi Zaffran Weisler, Godspeed, Amir Raveh and Pini Leibovich.

Junktion Studio is represented by the Sonol Barrel chair seen above, made out of a discarded metal barrel that was considered industrial waste. This handmade, limited edition piece was fashioned out of the barrel, plywood, sponge and upholstery materials.

Tiroche Auction No. 144 of Israeli and International Art will take place on January 28, 2012. For more information about the auction visit the Tiroche website.

What if art had the power to change our habits for the (environmentally) better? Could a photograph change governmental policy, or at the very least, some of our daily behaviors? Artistic photographers have tried, and acclaimed photographer Spencer Tunick’s naked Dead Sea shoot this year to raise awareness about its sinking water levels is one of the most famous examples.

Sometimes the beauty of a photograph (or other work of art) is what it takes to force us to make a change. The stunning hanging laundry photograph series by Israeli photographer Sivan Askayo is no exception, and may cause many of us to regret that we ever used an electronic dryer.

Titled ‘Intimacy Under the Wires’, Askayo says that her “laundry project [began] in the vibrant alleyways of Tel Aviv’s Jaffa neighborhood and has become an ongoing project, taking me to Madrid, Barcelona, London, Florence, Venice and Buenos Aires to snap the anonymously displayed drying clothing.”

“The project, that was named ‘Intimacy under the Wires’,” she continues, “reveals images of laundry both intimate and unconfined while their snoopy character makes laundry, a seemingly prosaic subject, all the more intriguing.”

The series has already been featured in Phaidon, The SIP and Design Sponge, and we wonder what kind of effect it has had on peoples’ laundry.

Jerusalem will host the grand opening of its second annual Design Week on December 4th, with a week of design exhibitions, conferences, master classes, cinema events and workshops planned for a variety of audiences. The exhibitions will touch on a few design issues. Culture Climate, curated by Alfons Hug, will attempt to use design to create more empathy towards the global issue of climate change. Time 02 Fervency, the central exhibit, will focus on designs created within a short period of time and feature some local sustainable designs, such as the work of Adi Zaffran Weisler (of upcycled bullet jewelry fame) and Joy van Erven of Godspeed (the speedy design team that makes all its pieces within one hour).

The Culture Climate exhibition is based on the idea that climate change is a cultural change, in addition to being a political and social change. Despite the fact that climate change effects us all, however, the issue has been objectified over the past century and is currently presented in the form of cold, distant facts.

Culture Climate hopes to “elevate the aesthetic temperature of the climate crisis in order to renew our sensual bond with the most significant global change of our time and for the following generations.” The exhibit will include works by Simon Faithfull, Michael Sailstorfer, Raynold Raynolds, Gudio van der Werve, and more.

Israeli designer Ezri Tarazi, the head of the Industrial Design Department at Israel’s Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, is no stranger to sustainable design. Some of his previous projects include eye glass frames made from wood, and home furnishings created from upcycled ammunition boxes. But he put an entirely new spin on sustainable design recently with his free-falling mannequin chair – which employs the drop of a female mannequin filled with 100 kilos of concrete in order to sculpt the metal chair instead of using energy-guzzling machines. The chair is almost entirely man (and mannequin) made.

As shown in the clip below, Tarazi begins with a trapezoidal box made of perforated metal sheets. He then (with the help of a friend) hoists the weighted female mannequin above the box and drops it. The mannequin, being shaped in the human form anyway, creates a hollow in the box that is suitable for people to sit in. Whether the chair is comfortable or not is another question entirely.

The chair raises questions about the relationship between human needs and design – do contemporary designers fashion their creations around the needs of human consumers, or do we adapt ourselves to the design of the objects that we use?

For Christmas last year, Israeli artist Hadas Itzcovitch gifted her city of Haifa a tree made from 5480 upcycled plastic bottles (pictured above). Constructed immediately after the disastrous Carmel region fires broke out and destroyed so many trees, Itzcovitch’s tree was a symbol of the community’s hope for a greener future. In a few weeks she will be building another set of 10 green cypress trees, this time as a celebration of the Baha’i gardens in Haifa and of the city’s interfaith residents.

But she will not be building these trees alone. Itzcovitch intends to bring the infrastructure for the trees alone – 10 timber bases – and encourage local residents to come help her construct the trees using upcycled newspapers.

The construction of Itzcovitch’s trees, which will take place on Friday October 21st, is part of a larger eco-celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Baha’i gardens and the city’s interfaith nature.

In addition to the live music and performances that will take place, workshops will also be held by City Tree and the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI). Upcycling artists will also be selling their eco-friendly products such as repurposed fabric bags, jewelry made from natural stones, and organic soap.

The 10 trees will be, in Itzcovitch’s words, a “direct continuation of the Baha’i gardens into the German Colony” where the festivities are located.

It takes a lot of energy to mine metals from the earth, and significantly less energy to recycle metals into something new. But if you can upcycle used metal scraps into something else (such as an upcycled aluminum can chair) without it undergoing a significant process? That’s ideal. And industrious. The concept has not evaded Reuven Fields, an Israeli artist currently living and working in North Carolina in the United States whose front lawn and studio are filled with sculptures fashioned out of scrap metal.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Btz_M8_X9WI[/youtube]

Born and raised on Kibbutz Hazorea in Israel, Fields moved to the US about ten years ago to seek out greater opportunities for his metal art. He studied metal design at Wizo Canada in Haifa, but soon became interested in performance art and using his sculptures in combination with music.

The video clip above, Cycles of Life, shows one such performance piece with his upcycled metal scrap art being combined with flowing water and music. “My interest has always been more kinetic,” Fields says. “I’m still a performance artist at heart.

(This Green Prophet thinks that the sculpture also aptly demonstrates the Cycles of Metal.)

Since moving to North Carolina, Fields has been active in the community and created many residential, commercial and public pieces. He often participates in local art festivals and competitions as well.

Fields welcomes visitors to his studio, where works every day (except on days when he’s at the local scrap yard collecting materials).

We’re talking Islamic Eco-Rap. In this exclusive Green Prophet interview, Zaufishan asks eco-Muslim A.L.I. why his environmental message should be on our iTunes playlist.

Green Prophet: Firstly, who is behind ‘Professor A.L.I?’

Professor A.L.I.: I’m a hip-hop poet, artist and activist based out of the Bay Area in California. I identify myself as a human being. I try to define myself through my actions, clarify myself through my intentions, and strive to be a Muslim.

Outside of rap music, I am both a writer and an educator. I am working on several writing projects with the poetry compilation entitled ’72 Martyr Series’ coming out the soonest. I also teach courses in African-American Literature and poetry at U.C. Berkeley as well as in the Humanities department at a prestigious college preparatory school in the Bay Area.

Green Prophet: When did you start the “Eco-Rap” concept?

Professor A.L.I.: I’ve been rapping since high school, but over time what I rapped about and communicated through hip-hop changed. It was fueled by my observations and life lessons. Hip-hop to me is a method of communication to a specific audience, one that is capable of understanding coded language and acting upon a message.

“The overwhelming message in my short life has been that this planet is dying and we are the murderers. Once the lesson was imparted, that this pristine planet is now polluted, the natural has become artificial and that life itself has become unbearable… I made this my predominant message. I called it “the real green movement” but a radio show host at KPFA called it ‘Eco-Rap’ on the air, ‘Islamic Eco-Rap’ at that, and it stuck.”

I didn’t set out to promote a specific theme, I was just trying to tell a story to inspire my fellow Muslims to save our planet – not just from Global Warming or pollution but all forms of epidemics and oppression.

Green Prophet: We love creative environmentalists and Green Prophet fans would be very interested in the background to your eco-messages. So, what exactly do you rap about?

Professor A.L.I.: Hip-hop is an intelligent movement in which rap plays a role of delivering… [a] message. The message here is that the ‘Mother’ Earth is in fact dying; slowly murdered by the children she once suckled. Eco-Rap is bringing awareness to this global issue. And Islamic Eco-Rap is putting it in the Muslim context of the ultimate goal in life: to please Allah Almighty (God).

I believe that we will be judged by God for our contribution to the destruction of this planet. I also believe that the foretold revolutions by prophets in the past will come to pass as ecological disasters that we are creating and have created. I hope that using the art of hip-hop and rap music to deliver a message will be heard by the only group that has the energy, incentive and hope to change things: the youth.

Green Prophet: That is a fantastic aim and we hope the youth will be part of the movement. What drives you to spread this ecological message to others?

Professor A.L.I.: My mother died from Lymphoma in 2007. Her last words to me still echo in my mind ‘Grab the Mic’. She wanted me to continue with hip-hop and rap which I had almost given up on at that point. In her life she was an accomplished musician, singer and vocalist. She encouraged me to use my voice. After she passed I embarked on using my voice to tell a story.

I firmly believe that my mother, who died young, died because of what we as human beings have done to the environment. Cancer is a by-product, and my mother a casualty of human neglect. I do this to honor her and to help inspire people to make the world a better place for my daughter to grow up in.

Green Prophet: Have you collaborated with any other singers or activists?

The ‘Carbon Cycle Diaries’ LP was a project that was constructed just to tell that story. There was something in it that resonated with established artists in the music industry and so I was first joined by the iconic figures: E-40, then Killah Priest, Raekwon, Canibus, Brand Nubian and Hussein Fatal of the Outlawz. Many other artists also collaborated with me in this solo debut, helping to bring this [eco] message to the people.

Green Prophet: Rap artists are generally associated with the mainstream music industry – songs are about living the fast life, cars, women, women in cars. How and why are you different with your eco principles?

I wouldn’t say that I am a mainstream artist. I do collaborate with mainstream artists as I mentioned earlier but I think what I am doing is what true hip-hop artists have always done which is communicate to the masses about real issues. I think where I differ is that I keep both a human focus, but an overall global feel. The earth is at the heart of the question; it is after-all why I call my solo debut the ‘Carbon Cycle Diaries’.

Green Prophet: Muslims are increasingly raising awareness about food waste and pollution. What are your biggest concerns as an eco-Muslim and which areas of the world do you feel are most affected by similar issues?

Professor A.L.I.: Let me tackle part two first. I have travelled all over the world extensively and spend a great length of time in the Middle East and Asia. I would say that nations developing now and trying the bridge the gap between themselves and ‘The West’ are the areas of the world I am most concerned with. The reason is that these nations are using the same methods used by the U.S. and Europe which we are now paying for as ecological disasters and as Global Warming. They are using these methods because in many instances they are cheap and quick; often times the climate issues are exacerbated by geography and pre-existing weather patterns as well.

One of the most polluted places I have been in recently is Tehran and it goes beyond the fossil fuels burned for millions of unregulated vehicles. Tehran and much of Iran is on a plateau, pollution just sits there and is visible as you fly in and out of the city as a thick brown layer.

As an Eco-Muslim my biggest concern is that my fellow Muslims lose sight of the fact that the earth is a trust, and destroy it in hopes of being more like other nations. I fear we will lose ourselves in the process.

Green Prophet: Now that you mention the Middle Eastern regions affected by human neglect, more of its otherwise traditionally Muslim countries are welcoming rap artists and their entourages. Where have you performed and what has the reaction been from different communities?

Professor A.L.I.: I have performed in Canada and the United States and I hope to perform in Turkey, Arab Nations, and Iran now that ‘Carbon Cycle Diaries’ is out. I get a mixed reaction. Many Muslims are under the false assumption that only traditional language [spoken] music is permissible or that Western influenced music or instrumentation is problematic. At the end of the day I find the greatest support amongst those who listen to the message conveyed which is one which resonates within Muslim culture.

Green Prophet: With that in mind, what advice would you give to aspiring Muslim eco-rap artists and other environmentally aware Muslims (who cannot sing!)?

Professor A.L.I.: I have young Muslims connecting with me now who aspire to be rap artists. My question is always ‘Why?’ Most recently I had someone tell me that they wanted to rap so they can be like Jay-Z. In other instances I have people only paying attention to my music because of the big names attached to my project. At the end of the day I’ll tell all of them the same thing, don’t embrace rap and hip-hop because you want to be rich. Get involved if you have a message and a passion to effectuate change. Be creative yet stay true to your voice and experiences. At the end of the day if you want to copy someone copy the Prophet Muhammad in Islam.

To my environmentally conscious Muslims, I say we need to educate the communities at large of how ‘Haraam’ (unlawful) our wasteful lifestyle is.

“I have never been to an Islamic center that regularly recycles and composts; I have been to many that use Styrofoam and waste copious amounts of power, food and water. These may seem like little things but they contribute greatly to the worldwide epidemic. Each one, teach one and let’s keep the movement growing!

Green Prophet: Amen to that! So, lastly, what contribution do you hope to make towards Muslim environmentalists?”

Professor A.L.I.: The Arts need to play a significant role from music to painting, to plays and animation. My greatest hope is to network with so-called ‘green sheikhs’ and eco-Muslimas like Kristiane Backer, to help bring light to environment issues in our own communities. We need to stop thinking in terms of being Carbon Neutral and start thinking in terms of being Carbon regenerative.

We need to be the stewards of this ‘Real Green Movement’ and help create a global awareness starting in the Middle East. Music and hip-hop can be powerful tools in energizing our future leaders into becoming environmental stewards themselves.

Green Prophet: Thank you kindly A.L.I. for sharing your environmental words of wisdom and we hope that everyone reading is inspired and takes a leaf out of your unique activism.

Israeli artist Liat Yaniv‘s creativity – like that of many before here – was fueled by a shortage of materials and resources. When she was an art student in Denmark she had limited funds, and so she began to find ways to use the ubiquitous and free materials around her – such as the daily newspaper. She did not use the newspaper to create papier mache, though, which is what many end up doing with newspaper. She used the colored sections of the newspaper to make idiosyncratic eco-friendly dolls with surprising amounts of character and presence.

A self-proclaimed “Paper Worker”, Yaniv has developed her technique and builds her dolls from rings of paper with glue. She waits for each ring to dry before adding the next, until the rings are firm and create a hollow form for the dolls. The dolls are then covered with a surface made out of carefully selected pieces of colored newspaper.

Each doll can take several weeks to complete.

In her own words, Yaniv says that “I do not produce garbage. I work entirely from things I have at home. In the morning I get the newspaper, and in the evening, I cut out all the color pieces from it. This process has been going for over 9 years, and I manage to collect a wide variety of colors. This is a range of colors I would not be able to find in any store.”

“The materials that I love the most are those that are in daily use, that people take for granted and do not pay attention to,” she says. “It is my goal to make people look at them differently. Some people find it hard to believe that such colorful work is made from the newspaper they read every day.”

If you have a lot of stuff laying around that you can’t bear to part with but currently has no use, than Hana would be a god send. The Jordan-based eco designer can turn tins into lanterns, skateboards into necklaces and plastic bags into notebooks. Not only is she a budding designer with great flair but she also has the time to help out on projects working with children in refugee camps, women’s rights and helping the planet. I spoke to the upcycler about all things hand-made, taking a leap into the unknown to do something you love and changing people’s perceptions of trash.

Also, check out Hana’s tin can lantern tutorial which is a great step-by-step guide to making a gorgeous lantern from a tin- but if you don’t have the time to make it yourself, you can always snap up one of Hana’s!

Where in Jordan were you born and raised and have you always wanted to be a designer?

I was born and raised in Amman, I knew since I was a child that I wanted to be an artist but the idea evolved as I grew older and I started to know myself better. Eventually I realised that I want to do something artistic that has a certain function to it and holds meaning.

Upcycling is a new and pretty word of an old concept. How did you get introduced to upcycling?

It was by coincidence that I got introduced to upcycling. I used to make jewellery out of old leather from bags or shoes or even leather seats but I didn’t know that what I was doing is called upcycling until I decided to research jewellery ideas on the internet and only then was I introduced to this term.

What is it about upcycling that you love?

I love the idea of turning something that people see as trash into something beautiful that also has a function. I also love that there are so many ways that you can upcycle something, for example I use the sewing machine to make bags and purses out of old neckties, on the other hand I use the jigsaw to make the skateboard jewellery, so there’s always a new skill to learn. And since I’m a person who doesn’t like routine this job is perfect for me!

I read that you quit your job as a graphic designer to become an upcycler. Was that a difficult decision to make?

It was difficult at first because I had to move out of my comfort zone where I get paid consistently, but I’m the kind of person that if I don’t do what I want I become miserable and depressed. Is the ‘green’ aspect of upcycling important to you?

To be honest, at first the concept of green products didn’t occur to me because like I said I didn’t know that what I was doing was called upcycling- it was just something I did to pass the time. But as the project grew bigger I realised that what I was doing could raise awareness about the environment, and being someone who has always loved nature it made sense to do it. I now go to different areas in Jordan where I give workshops on how to reuse certain things that harm the environment like plastic bags and bottles. I started reading more about how those things harm the environment and try to come up with ideas that can help prevent those problems.

This is actually how it all started, I was sitting with a friend one day and it hit me- I told him I’m going to quit my job and open a shop. I didn’t know anything else back then, I didn’t know it will have to do with upcycling I just knew that this is what I wanted to do.

In the Egyptian desert landscape of Wadi Natrun, 200 students and activists worked in the blistering heat to send a message to world leaders heading to Cancan for the latest climate conference. Placing large black strips on the ground and using florescent jackets, the image of a scarab holding a sun with ‘350’ inside slowly emerged and could even be seen from space. The enormous scarab was a call for leaders to agree to a fair and effective climate deal and also symbolized the potential of solar power as a renewable resource to power Egypt’s future.

The Cairo event was designed and organised by the local artist Sarah Rifaat and was one of 12 events around the world by the 350 campaign. Rifaat told the BBC that it was “important that Egypt joined this global call” to tackle climate change.

Devastating Impacts of Climate Change On Egypt

Egypt has a lot to lose from the effects of climate change due low sea levels and scientists have warned that the Nile Delta, which provides a lifeline to the country through agricultural activities could be at stake. In fact, a study commissioned by the Arab Forum for Environment and Development warned that Egypt would be one of the worst affected amongst the Arab countries with 12 million Egyptians at risk due to rising sea levels. Much like the entire MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, Egypt is also at risk of increasing water scarcity.

Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali explained at a recent conference that water scarcity “constitutes a source of deep concern for most Muslim countries given their water poverty, imbalanced demographic growth, arbitrary exploitation of water resources, aggravated pollution, and severe and frequent climate changes, together with associated problems of drought.” He added that resolving this issues was one of the ‘most important duties’ of our time. According to reports, around 1,000 Egyptian youths took part in the climate art event backed by the 350 campaign, which included photo exhibitions to highlight the issue of climate change.

Using Art To Inspire Change & Awareness

The 350 campaign is run by Bill McKibben who spoke to Green Prophet last month and hopes the events will demonstrate the massive public support for bold climate action and the role that art can play in inspiring humanity to protect the planet. “Art can convey in a different way than science the threat that climate change poses to our planet,” he explained. “The world’s best scientists have tried to wake-up politicians to the climate crisis, now we’re counting on artists to help.”

The 350 campaign is named after the upper limit of carbon that is safe in the atmosphere and works to reduce the current level which stands at an estimated 380-390 parts per million to 350 ppm. Other pieces of climate art installed for the event- which organisers say is the first international climate art project- included an elephant in New Delhi, a flash flood in Sante Fe and a human hurricane in Mexico City.
