In a fragrance market awash with synthetic blends and mass production, Le Labo stands apart like a whisper of nature in a noisy world. Known for its cult-like following and unapologetically minimalist aesthetic, this New York-born perfume house has garnered global acclaim not only for its handcrafted scents but also for its commitment to sustainability, transparency, and ethical luxury.

Related: natural, green perfume by Ayelet Moriel

Natural Ingredients and Small-Batch Perfumery

At the heart of Le Labo’s ethos is a strong preference for natural, high-quality ingredients. While not every component is 100% natural—certain molecules must be synthesized to remain cruelty-free or allergen-safe—the brand is transparent about sourcing and formulation. Le Labo’s fragrances are vegan, cruelty-free, and free from parabens, preservatives, and artificial colorants. Their iconic labels are printed on recycled paper, and many of their bottles are refillable, with in-store refill stations offered in several global locations to reduce waste.

Each scent is freshly hand-blended and labeled at the moment of purchase—offering a small-batch, artisanal experience more akin to fine dining than factory fragrance. This model not only ensures freshness but also avoids the emissions and inefficiencies of large-scale warehousing.

Le Labo’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond what’s in the bottle. The brand uses recycled packaging, glass instead of plastic, and minimal outer packaging to reduce environmental impact. Even their candles are made with soy wax and cotton wicks, and their shampoo and body products come in plant-based, refillable bottles.

Their studios, which double as retail spaces, are designed with natural, raw materials like reclaimed wood and industrial metal—encouraging a slower, more conscious retail experience that echoes their “slow perfumery” philosophy.

City Exclusives: A Scented Travelogue with a Conscience

One of Le Labo’s most beloved—and elusive—projects is the City Exclusives collection. Typically only available in their city of origin, these scents are like bottled postcards, each inspired by the energy, culture, and olfactory identity of a global destination.

For a limited time every year—this time starting August 1—these fragrances go on a world tour, available in 1.5 ml discovery sizes and full bottles come September. It’s a rare chance to smell Tokyo’s Gaiac 10, Paris’s Vanille 44, or Dubai’s Cuir 28, even if you’re thousands of miles away.

This year’s exciting addition? OSMANTHUS 19, the new Kyoto exclusive—bringing the soft floral sweetness of osmanthus flowers into the fold.

Here’s the full travel-worthy list of scents:

A Quiet Revolution in Beauty

While many luxury brands are only now waking up to environmental responsibility, Le Labo has been whispering it from the beginning. From ingredient integrity and minimalist packaging to refill stations and city-inspired storytelling, Le Labo proves that sustainability doesn’t have to shout—it can smell like osmanthus, myrrh, or a hint of city smoke.

In a world oversaturated with fast beauty, Le Labo offers something different: a slow, mindful ritual that respects people, place, and planet. That’s why it’s more than perfume. It’s philosophy. In a bottle.

As individuals become more aware of their environmental impact, they begin to reconsider the products that they use in their daily lives, including sunscreen.

Conventional chemical sunscreens normally contain compounds that may harm marine life, especially coral reefs. But here’s the good news: mineral sunscreens are not only safer for your skin but also gentler on the planet. Learn how making the switch can help protect our oceans and contribute to a healthier future.

Which Sunscreens are Eco-Friendly?

Not every sunscreen product is the same, especially when it comes to environmental impact. Ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, and avobenzone, commonly found in chemical sunscreens, have been linked to coral bleaching and harm to marine life. These chemicals rinse off your skin when you swim or shower, making their way to waterways and weak ecosystems.

In contrast, mineral-based sunscreens use physical blockers like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to effectively protect against the sun’s UV rays. When formulated correctly (using non-nano particles and without harmful additives), they are a reef-safe method of sun protection.

Understanding the Ingredients: Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide

So what’s the difference between zinc oxide and titanium dioxide? They are naturally occurring minerals with broad-spectrum UV protection that block both UVA and UVB rays.

Unlike chemical filters, which absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, potentially irritating sensitive skin, mineral filters sit on the skin’s surface and physically block the sun. This makes them especially suitable for sensitive skin types, including children or individuals with conditions like eczema or rosacea.

Notably, reef-safe formulas do not contain nano-sized particles, which can cause danger to the environment. Rather, non-nano mineral-based sunscreens have minimal chances of being consumed by marine creatures or diffusing to the environment.

Beyond the Ocean: Greater Environmental Impact

You can make your own sunscreen, using mineral-based ingredients

Being eco-friendly is not just about what is inside the bottle. Many brands are also committed to creating sustainable packaging that uses recyclable or even biodegradable materials. This limits plastic waste and supports the shift to a circular economy.

Some formulas are also biodegradable, meaning they can break down naturally without causing any damage to the environment. These products help you approach sustainability in a comprehensive way, allowing you to take care of your skin while taking care of the environment around you.

Safe for You and The Planet

Mineral sunscreens are one of nature’s most thoughtful solutions. Unlike many chemical options, mineral filters are not absorbed into the bloodstream and are less likely to induce an allergic reaction, making them a smart choice for individuals with sensitive skin, allergies, or autoimmune conditions.

By choosing mineral sunscreen, you’re making a conscious decision that aligns with not only the well-being of the planet, but also your health.

Final Thoughts

You don’t have to choose between protecting your skin and protecting the environment. Mineral-based sunscreens offer effective, reef-safe UV protection while supporting a more sustainable lifestyle. Whether you’re just beginning to explore green skincare or already committed to it, switching to mineral sunscreen is a great place to start.

If you’ve ever switched from one personal care product brand to another, you know just how differently your body can react to a new product. From body lotions to makeup, sometimes making a product swap can be a big deal.

One of the products that you probably swap often is deodorant. With all of the new scents and added benefits, such as 24-hour protection hitting the store shelves, you’ve probably tried a wide range of deodorants to stay smelling good throughout the day.

But have you ever thought of switching from store bought deodorant brands to a natural deodorant? While switching between store brands is usually no big deal, making the switch to natural deodorant is a process. Read more here on sage advice about natural deodorants on Green Prophet.

Here’s what you need to know about transitioning from store bought to natural deodorant.

Reasons to Switch

For many people, if a product they use is working, there’s no need to swap it for something else. However, what most people don’t realize about deodorant is that most store bought brands are made with harmful ingredients. Some issues are relatively mild; such as irritated skin and redness, while other ingredients can cause serious health issues like an increased risk of cancer, hormonal disruption, and even Alzheimer’s disease.

After learning about the health risks that your deodorant may be causing, it only makes sense to switch to a healthier and safer alternative. But swapping out store brand deodorant with natural deodorant isn’t as simple as it may seem.

What to Expect

There’s truly a process behind switching to natural deodorant. There are some things you’ll want to know so that you aren’t freaking out and going back to a store brand deodorant before the new natural product starts to really work.

You Will Sweat

Despite what most deodorant brands advertise, sweating is not the enemy. In fact, your body sweats to remove toxins and other harmful chemicals in the body. While store bought deodorant uses ingredients to block the pores to prevent sweating, natural deodorant doesn’t.

Instead, natural deodorant allows your pores to open themselves, letting your body breathe and resume its natural process of removing toxic buildup that’s been kept in for years.

Once you make the switch, you will sweat. In fact, you may sweat even more as your body starts to get rid of the toxins and chemicals that have been building up over time. Typically in a few weeks, your body will normalize and you’ll find that you will sweat less.

This means you’ll need to be patient and stick with it, even if your pits are sweatier than ever before. If sweat becomes an issue, simply apply more deodorant. You can also try switching to an all-natural antiperspirant that uses natural ingredients to keep sweat at bay.

You Will Stink

The whole point of deodorant is to keep you from stinking, right? Just as you will sweat more after making the switch, you’ll also likely smell more than usual. Again, this is because your body is detoxing and getting rid of all of the harmful chemicals in your body. Be sure to steer away from deodorants that use chemically smelling scents like flowers, as you’ll just end up smelling like a stinky flower.

Instead, look for a natural deodorant that uses safe and effective odor-masking ingredients such as essential oils, baking soda, and coconut oil. These ingredients not only prevent odor but they keep bacteria at bay.

Give the natural deodorant a week or two to really start working. This gives your body enough time to finish detoxing and to get back to a normal healthy balance.

Skin Sensitivity

Depending on the ingredients used in the natural deodorant that you choose, you may find that your armpits are red and inflamed. Certain ingredients can also cause rashes and other skin irritation. Baking soda is typically the culprit behind these skin issues as many natural brands use it to keep pit odor at bay.

To reduce skin sensitivity, switch to a natural deodorant that uses less baking soda, or find one that doesn’t use the ingredient at all. This way you can avoid having irritated skin while also keeping armpit stink away.

When applying natural deodorant, try dabbing it on versus rubbing it. The motion of rubbing the deodorant against your skin can cause even more irritation. It’s also important to avoid putting on too much at once.

Conclusion

Switching to natural deodorant may take a few weeks, but at the end of the process, it will be well worth it. There’s no better feeling than knowing you aren’t applying harmful ingredients to your skin on a daily basis.

Sugar wax, sugaring or Persian waxing, whatever you want to call it there is an old, tried and true way to wax, naturally. Many beauty regimens do more harm than good as many products contain harsh chemicals including toxins, hormone disruptors and even pesticides! That’s why we have scouted out an ancient Arabic beauty regimen that does not threaten your body or your bank account for that matter.

It’s an attractive recipe. This all-natural sugar wax is most popular in Egypt and Lebanon. There are plenty of videos which present efficient instructions on how to proceed with the depilatory “cooking.” But we like the video better below.

Sugar wax sugaring recipe

Sugar, white or brown (1 cup)

Water (2 Tbsp)

Lemon juice (1.5 Tbsp)

Salt, optional (1 tsp)

Sugaring Wax Method

Combine these above natural ingredients in a saucepan and simmer on low heat. Allow the mixture to thicken and turn golden-brown. (Just like freshly baked cookies you know it’s good when it’s golden-brown.)

Stir the mixture with a spoon, making sure the sugar crystals dissolve. Within roughly eight minutes, it will thicken considerably and take on a syrupy consistency. Be careful not to let it burn.

Watch as the mixture turns a darker brown, turn off the heat, and let the forming wax cool for a couple of minutes.

And voilà (as this is also called Persian waxing), there you have your wax. Apply where desired and pull in the opposite direction of hair growth.

The wax is totally reusable so stick the leftover portion in plastic and put it in the fridge. 10 seconds in the microwave will be enough when you want to use it later.

The sweetness of this sugar wax cannot be denied: it’s sticky, like toffee, and the color of caramel.

It’s also effective, cheap, and non-harmful.

Great for sexy legs. So try it at home. I know I will!

Following our report on turmeric‘s benefits for natural breast health, science is finding more evidence for Mother Nature’s healing possibilities. According to ScienceDaily.com, “scientists at Aston University and Russells Hall Hospital have discovered that an extract from a common plant in Pakistan may help treat breast cancer.”

While more research is needed, according to the report, the results were free from the side effects such as hair loss associate with modern cancer treatments. The plant, called Fagonia cretica, is part of a family of plants that grow in arid, desert regions including Africa, the Mediterranean and Middle East regions.

From the ScienceDaily.com report:

“The plant, Fagonia cretica, and known as Virgon’s Mantlem, is commonly used in herbal tea. It has been traditionally used to treat women in rural Pakistan who have breast cancer, but up until now this treatment has been regarded as something of a folklore remedy. However, patients in Pakistan who have taken the plant extract have reported that it does not appear to generate any of the serious common side effects associated with other cancer treatments, such as loss of hair, drop in blood count or diarrhea.”

Now, scientists at Aston University in Birmingham and Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley have undertaken tests of the plant extract and demonstrated that it kills cancer cells without damage to normal breast cells in laboratory conditions.

Professor Helen Griffith and Professor Amutul R Carmichael who lead the study are now aiming to identify which element or elements of the plant are responsible for killing the cancer cells with a view to eventually begin trails with human cancer patients.

Professor Helen Griffith of Aston University said; “More research is needed to establish the role of the extract in cancer management and It now needs to be demonstrated that this extract is as effective in killing cancer cells inside the body as it is within laboratory. The next steps are to identify which element of the plant is responsible for killing the cancer cells with a view to eventually begin trails with human cancer patients.”

As an plant family, Fogonia is distributed across many regions. The rural communities in Pakistan and beyond who are familiar with it as a potential medicine or supplement ‘may not benefit from it’s development as a pharmaceutical,’ writes a Nature and Science blog devoted to natural medicinal discoveries. “The populations who know and use the herb, perhaps originally because they have few other affordable or effective options, are not likely to see much recognition of their prior art in having knowledge of the herb as a medicine.”

Overall, this is good news for women who are interested in learning more about herbs for breast health, enhancing breasts naturally or who understand the delicate balance between living sustainably and sexual wellness. With environmental toxins being likely culprits for a variety of concerns including increasing breast size, it’s important that further research is completed that does more than simply identify the cancer-fighting compounds within this plant. Really smart science would ask those who are familiar with Fagonia‘s properties to share how best to serve these specific cups of tea while honoring humanity’s long history of turning to nature for what ails us, breasts and all.

Before I gave birth, I was sure it would be all-natural. For the sake of my baby, and my back, I decided to not take an epidural. The tune changed when the contractions attacked me like a lion, giving me no-where to run. Was this a smart decision to take the epidural, and do the short-term effects of it outweigh the other problems, like difficulties in breastfeeding, or lower back pain? According to a new study from Tel Aviv University, women who opt for the natural, pain-relief-free birth are at a much higher risk of developing full blown post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It’s no trivial matter as PTSD is associated with serious health effects like depression and in the worst cases suicide. This news will no doubt get the La Leche League women fired up. Read on.

In the new study Prof. Rael Strous and colleagues found that about one third of all post-partum women develop PTSD, and among them a smaller percentage develop the full blown version of the condition. It usually develops in individuals who experience highly traumatizing situations such as terrorist attacks and car accidents, but symptoms can also come about after normal life events — including childbirth.

Looking deeper at the cases of women who developed PTSD, some 80 percent opted for natural childbirth without pain relief. Other significant factors that pointed to whether or not they’d develop the condition include the woman’s body image (including discomfort with being in an undressed state for the relatively prolonged period of labor and undergoing elective Caesarean sections), fear during labor, and complications in the present and earlier pregnancies and labors, the researchers found.

Published in IMAJ, the Israel Medical Association Journal, the researchers assess that the trauma is unlike others, in that it’s not unexpected. Still mothers feared their own safety as well as the health of their new babies.

In the study researchers interviewed 89 post-partum women between the ages of 20 and 40, first within 2 to 5 days after delivery and then again one month after delivery.

They discovered that of these participants, 25.9 percent displayed symptoms of post-trauma, 7.8 percent suffered from partial post-trauma, and 3.4 percent exhibited symptoms of full-blown PTSD. Symptoms included flashbacks of the labor, the avoidance of discussion of the event, physical reactions such as heart palpitations during such discussions, and a reluctance to consider having another child.

Is an epidural the key to stopping PTSD?

According to Strous, one of the most influential factors for developing PTSD or not was pain management during delivery. Of the women who experienced partial or full post-trauma symptoms, 80 percent had gone through a natural childbirth, without any form of pain relief.

“The less pain relief there was, the higher the woman’s chances of developing post-partum PTSD,” he said. Of the women who did not develop any PTSD symptoms, only 48 percent experienced a natural childbirth.

A full 80 percent of the PTSD group reported feeling discomfort with being unclothed, and 67 percent had previous pregnancies which they described as traumatic. Fear of the labor itself, both in terms of expected pain levels and danger to themselves and their children, was also influential.

The researchers discovered to their surprise that support during labor, in the form of a midwife or doula, had no lasting impact when it came to avoiding post-traumatic symptoms.

Factors such as socioeconomic and marital status, level of education, and religion also had no effect.

Reading the warning signs

There are some immediate steps medical professionals can take, Strous says, including better counselling about pain relief and making sure that patients’ bodies are properly covered during delivery: “Dignity is a factor that should be taken into account. It’s an issue of ethics and professionalism, and now we can see that it does have physical and psychological ramifications,” he says.

This research certainly makes me think again about going natural for the next birth. Or should I start smoking pot? (It’s supposed to be a good way to fight PTSD).

Red cochineal bugs have been used as a dye for centuries. But its a product from bugs, not deemed kosher or halal. A new product from Israel called Lycored makes red dye from tomatoes.

Look at any Middle East dining table and the humble tomato is usually there front and center, diced into a cucumber salad or sliced in big wedges drizzled with lemon juice and olive oil. No one knows fresh tomatoes like the Levant. It makes sense, then, that the Israeli company LycoRed should corner the market for lycopene, a new super-food and natural dye extracted from the tomato.

Lycopene is quickly replacing artificial and animal-based red dyes across America. Health-conscious, vegan, kosher and halal consumers are paying particular attention to this new “green” red dye.

Red food coloring is an attractive way to add a natural tint to milkshakes (Starbucks does it), red velvet cupcakes, candies and yogurts, but recent evidence on six synthetic dyes, including Red 40, links them to behavioral problems in children.

As savvy parents demand better solutions for candies and snack foods, and big retailers such as Starbucks are searching for natural alternatives for their fruit shakes, all eyes are on Israel.

LycoRed has been making natural dyes — from orange to red to red with bluish notes — for about 15 years using carrots or tomatoes. The company recently doubled production of Tomat-O-Red, its antioxidant-rich lycopene compound from non-genetically modified tomatoes grown in California and Israel.

Kosher– and halal-certified, it is recognized as safe for consumption by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Kicking the old red habits

Roee Nir, the company’s color and flavor global commercial manager says that the “Southamptom Six” — Red 40 and five other petroleum-based synthetic food dyes – were found by Southampton University researchers to be linked with childhood reactions including temper tantrums, aggressiveness, kicking, screaming and a lack of self-control. Children are particular susceptible to the effects of Red 40, while in adults it might cause nervousness, migraines or an upset stomach.

Food coloring makes a wide variety of processed foods more attractive.

LycoRed’s colorings offer fresh hope for the food industry. The company’s lycopene is now widely used in products including surimi, an artificial crab meat; smoothies and yogurts; beverages and juices; and confectionary like gummy bears and hard-boiled candies, says Nir.

And now Starbucks? A recent controversy was stirred when Starbucks declared it would no longer use a petroleum-based dye in its Strawberries & Crème Frappuccino. Initially the company announced it would switch to carmine, a dye produced from a beetle, but vegetarians objected and so did kosher consumers, who are not permitted to eat insects. Starbucks quickly replaced its “bug juice” with lycopene.

LycoRed is the only lycopene producer with FDA approval, so it’s a good bet that Starbucks uses the Israeli product, though Nir can’t name names due to non-disclosure agreements.

Cosmetics and drugs and pizza

Lycored, the producer of natural lycopene-based taste-enhancers for food and beverage, has unveiled tomato serums, Sante, and Clear Tomato Concentrate (CTC) for the pizza industry to reduce the amount of sugar and salt in sauces and crust recipes.

LycoRed has had to double its production to meet increasing demands, and Tomat-O-Red is expected to transition from the basic foods industry to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Tomatoes, rather than Red 40, can color your luncheon meat.

Though other Red 40 replacements from the natural world include a dye from beetroot, Nir says these other solutions are not as chemically stable as lycopene and tend to degrade at high temperatures or over time. They are also more susceptible to damage from UV light.

That puts LycoRed in an enviable position, particularly as public awareness of lycopene’s health benefits for the skin and heart has really started taking off in America, Nir adds.

A new nutraceutrical is launched
