Image: supplied

Running 26.2 miles at speeds most people cannot hold for a single mile requires years of targeted preparation. The men and women finishing major marathons in times under 2 hours and 10 minutes follow training systems built on exercise physiology research, altitude manipulation, and precise intensity control. Their weekly routines look nothing like recreational running programs, and the reasoning behind each session comes from decades of scientific study into human endurance limits.

The Numbers That Separate Elite Runners

A laboratory measurement called VO2 max tells researchers how much oxygen an athlete can use during intense exercise. Average adults test between 30 and 45 ml/kg/min. Elite endurance athletes score between 65 and 80 ml/kg/min. This gap explains why a professional marathoner can hold a pace that would leave an untrained person gasping within minutes.

Another marker called lactate threshold determines how fast someone can run before acid accumulates in working muscles. In untrained people, this point arrives at roughly 76.6% of their VO2 max. Elite runners push that boundary to about 82%. The practical result shows up on the track: professional marathon runners maintain lactate threshold speeds of 18 to 21 km/h, and they can hold that output for hours.

These numbers do not arrive by accident. Targeted training over many years shifts both measurements upward.

Fueling During Long Runs

Marathon training sessions that extend beyond 90 minutes require athletes to consume carbohydrates mid-run. The body stores roughly 2,000 calories of glycogen in muscles and liver, and prolonged efforts deplete these reserves at a steady rate. Runners practicing race-day nutrition strategies learn to time their intake and test products like sports drinks, bananas, and energy gels to find what their stomachs tolerate at pace.

Elite programs treat fueling as a trainable skill. Athletes experiment with different carbohydrate sources during weekly long runs, aiming to consume 60 to 90 grams per hour during competition without gastrointestinal distress.

The 80/20 Rule in Weekly Training

Dr. Stephen Seiler studied training logs from world-class endurance athletes across multiple sports. His research found a consistent pattern: these athletes spent approximately 80% of their training time at low intensity and 20% at high intensity. They did not arrive at this ratio through instruction. They gravitated toward it naturally over years of competition and trial.

The logic makes sense when you consider recovery. Hard sessions break down muscle fibers and stress the cardiovascular system. Easy sessions allow repair while still accumulating mileage. Professional marathoners log between 110 and 140 miles per week during peak training blocks. John Korir, winner of both Chicago and Boston marathons, has reported peak weeks exceeding 160 miles.

Running that volume with too many hard days leads to injury and burnout. The 80/20 split lets athletes absorb the workload.

Why East African Runners Dominate

Of the 100 fastest marathon times ever recorded, 89 belong to Kenyan or Ethiopian runners. Part of this comes from cultural factors: running represents a pathway to financial success, and communities identify talented youth early. Part of it comes from geography.

Kenya’s Iten and Kaptagat training areas sit at 2,500 meters above sea level. Ethiopian elites train at elevations between 2,355 and 2,890 meters in places like Addis Ababa and Entoto. At these altitudes, the body produces more red blood cells to compensate for thinner air. When these athletes descend to race at lower elevations, they carry that extra oxygen-carrying capacity with them.

Western runners often travel to these locations for training camps or use altitude tents to simulate the effect at home. The adaptation takes weeks to develop and fades within a similar timeframe after returning to sea level.

Periodization and Training Phases

Why does Abebe Bikila run without shoes?
Abebe Bikila – Wikipedia 1960 Rome Olympics

Elite programs divide the year into blocks with distinct goals. A base phase focuses on building aerobic capacity through high mileage at comfortable paces. A sharpening phase introduces faster workouts that simulate race conditions. A taper phase reduces volume before competition so the body can absorb previous training and arrive at the start line fresh.

Each block might last 4 to 8 weeks depending on the athlete’s race schedule. Coaches adjust based on how the runner responds, using blood tests, heart rate data, and subjective feedback to modify plans.

Recovery as Training

What happens between runs matters as much as the runs themselves. Sleep research shows that endurance athletes need 8 to 10 hours nightly to support muscle repair and hormonal balance. Many professionals nap during the day, particularly after morning sessions.

Massage, ice baths, compression garments, and stretching routines fill the hours when athletes are not running. Some of these methods have strong research support; others work primarily through placebo or relaxation effects. Either way, the time spent on recovery allows for the high training loads that produce results.

The Mental Component

Running at lactate threshold pace for over 2 hours requires mental discipline that cannot be measured in a laboratory. Elite marathoners develop this through years of hard training and racing. They learn to tolerate discomfort, to break races into smaller segments, and to maintain focus when fatigue accumulates.

Coaches incorporate specific mental training techniques, including visualization of race scenarios and practice at running even splits when the body wants to slow down. These skills take repetition, and they separate runners with similar physical abilities.

If you’ve ever jumped on the latest diet trend only to abandon it a few weeks later, Cleveland-based fitness coach Harsha Pakhal is here to reassure you that you’re not alone. From juice cleanses to no-carb challenges, most quick fixes fizzle out because they’re too extreme to maintain.

You need simple, sustainable habits that will actually stick. A big overhaul of your routine and habits won’t get you there because you need to slowly combine new habits with existing ones. That’s how you change your mindset and attitude towards food.

Here’s what Harsha Pakhal says about how you can do that:

Ditch the “healthy” and “unhealthy” labels

Eating healthy is so much easier when you make it fun instead of seeing it as a chore. One of the ways to do this is to stop labelling foods as “good” and “bad.” Telling yourself a food is off-limits tends to make it more appealing.

Research shows restriction often leads to stronger cravings and overeating once the “bad” food is allowed. So instead of it making you feel better, you end up sending yourself on a guilt trip. Your body knows what it needs to eat, and labelling or demonizing food takes away your ability to do that freely.

Prioritize Protein and Plants at Every Meal

Protein helps stabilize energy, supports muscle repair, and keeps hunger in check. Making it the anchor of each meal makes it easier to manage your cravings and stay on track with balanced meals throughout the day. So invest in those eggs, chicken, tofu, or bean staples because they’re the foods that are going to keep your hunger at bay.

Vegetables and fruits provide essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Pakhal encourages clients to focus on adding more colorful produce to their plates, which naturally creates a more nutrient-dense meal without feeling restrictive.

Stay Consistent with Hydration

Dehydration often shows up as fatigue or even false hunger cues. A simple routine like drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning and keeping a bottle nearby can make a noticeable difference in energy and focus.

Plan, Don’t Wing It

Last-minute food decisions usually lead to less healthy choices. So it’s time to make meal prepping your best friend. It doesn’t have to mean spending an entire Sunday afternoon in the kitchen. Even some light meal prep, like lunch salads and cooked protein, can make a huge difference when that hunger hits.

Practice the 80/20 Rule

Perfection isn’t the goal. By eating nutrient-rich foods about 80% of the time and allowing room for favorite treats the other 20%, clients can stay on track without feeling deprived. “That flexibility is what makes a healthy lifestyle sustainable,” says Pakhal.

Reframing Nutrition Success

For Pakhal, the real progress comes from building a rhythm that lasts. His clients often report better energy, improved mood, and greater consistency long before they notice changes on the scale. By focusing on habits rather than extremes, they create results they can maintain.

The Takeaway

If fad diets have left you frustrated, it may be time to rethink your approach. Starting with one of Pakhal’s five habits and practicing it consistently can lead to meaningful, long-term change.

Movement doesn’t always mean going to the gym or following a strict workout plan. Many Canadians are looking for ways to stay active that feel natural and easy to maintain. And the good news is, that’s entirely possible. Daily activity can happen while you go about your regular schedule. From walking to the store to stretching in the kitchen, movement can be woven into your life without needing to set aside extra time.

This article focuses on how to enjoy movement in ways that are manageable and uplifting. We’ll explore how everyday tasks, routines, and hobbies can offer opportunities to stay active. The goal is to help you see activity as part of life—not something separate from it.

Start Your Day with Gentle Activity

The way you begin your day can shape how the rest of it feels. Adding light movement in the morning—like stretching, a short walk, or a few minutes of deep breathing—can help your body ease into its natural rhythm.

This quiet part of the day is also a good time to think about how you’re fuelling yourself. Many people choose to support their daily routines with both a balanced breakfast and mindful wellness habits. For some, that includes health-friendly supplements that offer nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to play a role in supporting overall well-being when part of a nutritious diet.

Brands like USANA Health Sciences offer options that include ingredients to complement healthy living. These supplements are not a replacement for real food but can work alongside thoughtful eating choices to help maintain nutritional balance—especially on days when meals might not cover everything.

Together, movement and mindful nourishment can help you feel steady and focused as the day begins.

Turn Short Breaks into Movement Opportunities

Whether you’re at home or at work, breaks are a natural part of the day. You might use that time to check your phone or grab a snack. But you can also use it for light movement.

Standing up, walking around your space, or doing simple stretches are great ways to keep your body active. These quick activities can refresh your mind too. You don’t need to follow a plan—just listen to your body and move in a way that feels good. Making use of small pockets of time adds up and supports consistent movement throughout the day.

Let Chores Count Toward Activity

Many people overlook how much activity happens during regular household tasks. Vacuuming, sweeping, gardening, and even tidying up are all forms of movement. If you’re doing them regularly, you’re already staying active more than you might think.

These activities can be done mindfully to make the most of them. Try focusing on your posture or turning on music to make them more enjoyable. When you view chores as part of your movement routine, it takes away the need to find time elsewhere in your day.

Be Social While Staying Active

Movement can be more fun when it’s shared. Spending time with friends or family doesn’t have to mean sitting still. Going for a walk in the neighbourhood, exploring a local trail, or joining a casual dance or fitness class are all great ways to stay connected and active at the same time.

These shared moments support both social and physical well-being. There’s no need to focus on performance—just enjoy moving together. Making activity part of your social time makes it easier to include in your lifestyle without extra planning.

Create Space at Home for Simple Movement

You don’t need a gym to move your body. A small corner of your home can work well for light activity. Whether it’s a space for stretching, yoga, or light home workouts, having a dedicated area makes movement easier to return to each day.

You can keep a mat rolled up in the living room or use a quiet bedroom for a few daily minutes of gentle activity. Keep it simple—just enough room to move freely without interruption. This helps build a habit without feeling like you need to do something extra or out of your routine.

Try Seasonal Outdoor Activities Across Canada

Snowshoeing in Canada

In Canada, each season brings something new to try. You can hike in the fall, snowshoe in the winter, bike in the spring, and paddle in the summer. These outdoor activities offer a chance to enjoy nature while staying active.

You don’t need to commit to large outings. Even short neighbourhood walks, visits to local parks, or time in the backyard can provide movement. Many cities have seasonal programs and trails that are open to the public, making it easy to find something that fits your interests.

Celebrate Every Small Win You Notice

It’s easy to overlook the value of small progress. But choosing to walk instead of driving, standing more often, or adding a five-minute stretch at the end of your day all make a difference. These changes don’t need to be big to be meaningful.

Taking time to recognize your efforts can help you stay motivated. You might jot down what you did at the end of the day or share your movement moments with a friend. When you celebrate these steps, you build a stronger connection to your goals and enjoy the process more.

Movement doesn’t have to be intense, structured, or time-consuming. It can be as simple as how you walk, sit, or stretch throughout the day. Canadians can find plenty of ways to stay active that match their lifestyle, interests, and environment.

By rethinking how movement fits into your life, it becomes easier to maintain. You don’t need a detailed fitness plan to benefit from regular activity. With a few mindful choices and a positive approach, movement can be a part of how you live—not something extra you have to do.

Enjoying movement in your daily life is not about achieving something specific. It’s about staying connected to your body and finding ways to stay active that feel right for you.

It’s no secret that as a person gets older, they become more susceptible to certain ailments and medical conditions. This could include minor issues like everyday aches and pains, or serious conditions like breast or prostate cancer. The good news is that it is possible to ensure healthy ageing and to reduce or completely avoid common medical problems associated with the ageing process. To that end, here are four tips you can incorporate into your current wellness outline that will serve you well today and many years into the future:

Consult with Medical Professionals

There’s no substitute for advice from a doctor. Maybe you are overdoing it in your Iyengar yoga class or going for too many runs with the wrong footwear. Though it is possible to make smart health decisions on your own, it’s still a good idea to check in with your doctor on a regular basis and mix their advice with people you trust. Your doctor can provide you with numerous treatments for common medical issues directly. Additionally, they can also help you get in touch with specialists for certain issues. If, for example, you begin to suffer from bunions, your doctor can recommend you contact an organization like Northwest Surgery Center in the United States for further assistance.

Treat Your Body with Care

So you’ve been exercising and staying on top of being fit, but staying up late, indulging in fast food, smoking cigarettes like it’s 1977 or drinking alcohol like it’s 1999 –– these are all vices that can have a severe detrimental impact on your overall well-being. Cutting back on these bad habits (or better yet, eliminating them entirely) will help you build a healthier and happier lifestyle. Have you heard about the fad in the US where people are looking for alcohol-less drinks? It’s becoming a thing. Note that as you get older, tiny bad habits in your 20s can grow to become damaging to your health and even harder to quit. So cut them out ASAP!

Relax

CBD me to relax

Your mental state can have a big influence on your physical health. As such, it’s crucial for ageing individuals (well that’s all of us at some point) to find ways to relax and unwind on a regular basis. Yoga classes, CBD products, and meditation are all tried-and-true methods designed to relieve stress. Reading books or starting a hobby like pottery on the wheel or ceramics is a a great way to lose yourself for a few hours a week. It’s my favorite hobby. Or try a new game like chess. It’s great for the mind. If you’re concerned about your mental wellness, make sure to reach out to someone who can help – a friend or a professional.

Rethink Your Routine

Just because a diet and exercise routine helped you achieve your fitness goals in your 20s and 30s, doesn’t mean the same routine will deliver the results you want to see in your 40s and 50s. In fact, it only makes sense that as you get older, you should reconsider your exercise regimen and daily diet. Now might be a good time to try out new workouts or healthy meal recipes or a keto diet. Why not? Trying new things can be difficult, and you may experience some setbacks when you introduce new concepts into your routine. However, keeping things fresh is essential to living a healthy life –– no matter your age.

A 90-minute yoga class in the great outdoors? Piece of cake, some yogis will say. But with Bikram yoga, a form created by Calcutta-born Bikram Choudhury, there’s a catch: class is conducted in a studio that’s heated to 105°F or approximately 40.6°C. When you are doing yoga like this in the Arabian Desert there is no need to heat the room!

When I go to Dubai (and I will someday…I’m determined), I will sign myself up for at least one Bikram yoga class there, even if it happens to be summer and the beating sun has already made its strong presence known.

Instructor Brian Ward started offering Bikram yoga classes in 2003 at a studio called Club Stretch in Bur Dubai. Then Mona Banki, a teacher under Ward’s direction at Club Stretch, branched out in 2010 to initiate Bikram Yoga Middle East, whose studio is located in Tecom, Dubai.

Many classes are offered on a ongoing basis, and package deals can tremendously improve the look of class rates. It’s worth a try, even if only for the amazing feeling you’ll get the instant you step out of the steamy studio and into the lobby, which will feel crisp and cool and refreshing. If you’re like me, you’ll get the urge to keep treating your body right and eat a nice big healthy meal as a reward.

Bikram yoga is not for the faint of heart. In fact, it’s for those who want to get their hearts pumping throughout an intensive workout – a codified workout that’s a set of 26 different postures and 2 breathing exercises, one to open class and one to conclude it. Designed to bring oxygen to 100 percent of the body, Bikram yoga is rejuvenating from head to toe. The heat is said to stimulate organs and aid digestion, although caution is due where preexisting medical conditions exist.

You may be feeling a little stressed out just thinking about the heat, but it actually helps Bikram exercisers feel the opposite way. The yoga is training for the relaxation of the mind. Chances are that if you can stay focused while dripping sweat and balancing on the ball of one foot, you will better be able to stay calm and concentrated in any other challenging situation.

In this short video on Bikram yoga, London’s leading teacher, Michelle Pernetta, says that “in the long term, you can expect to get rid of your aches and pains and have increased strength and flexibility, and really improve your stamina.”

Stamina increases especially for those people who are so committed that they take a Bikram yoga class every day. I took a Bikram yoga class in New York City’s Flatiron district yesterday; as a dancer, I find it especially beneficial. When I was chatting with the instructor after class about this kind of dedication, I learned that some people even take two classes per day. Three classes are considered excess; Bikram yoga policy disallows anyone from taking more than two, on a daily basis.

Just remember to stay very hydrated by drinking lots of water before class, and remember Bikram Choudhury’s words: “It’s never too late, it’s never too bad, you’re never too old, you’re never too sick to start from scratch once again, to be born once again.”

A complete detoxification process awaits you.

With Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani at the helm, Qatar’s bid committee spent years fighting to host this prestigious cycling event for two reasons: first, Al Thani thinks the presence of ultra lean athletes from other countries will convince Qatari nationals that physical fitness is more fun than shisha and McDonalds, and second, the State wants to send the message that bicycles are better for the environment than cars.

In addition to the UCI Road World Cycling Championship in 2016, the Gulf nation with one of the highest carbon footprints and percentage of fat people will host the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championship, the IHF World Handball Championship (for men only) in 2015, and then the much-discussed FIFA World Cup in 2022.

Al Thani is on a fat-melting, emissions-slashing crusade and he’s using international sporting events to spread his vision.

“Apart from the fact that Qatar will be the first country in the Middle East to host the Road World Championships, the most important aspect of the event is the legacy it will create in terms of physical fitness and awareness about protecting the environment,” Sheikh Saoud said.

In preparation for building a culture of cycling, the state has already starting building some bicycle lanes in Al Waab and near the airport, which doesn’t sound like the most exciting place to burn off calories and choke down soot.

And if Doha is anything like its Gulf cousin Abu Dhabi, cyclists better wear armor when they hit the roads.

Still, we can’t fault Qatar for striving, as part of its National Vision 2030, to build a healthier nation, and for the sake of humanity and the environment, we hope this worldly flurry of athleticism will have its intended effect.

A team of British researchers devised a calculator that weighs you against the world.

Did Olympic fever catch you? Itching to get sporty and lean? Before jumping into a new exercise routine, of course respect that classic disclaimer: first consult your doctor, who will check your weight and height and calculate your body mass.

Green Prophet’s brought you gizmos to calculate your carbon footprint, apps to save the planet, and techno-toys to play with global flooding. Now, researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine have created a calculator to show how you score in the global games of girth.

Using estimates of national body weights obtained from the World Health Organization, mean height statistics from national health surveys, and United Nations’ population size data, the scientists were able to discern average Body Mass Index (BMI) figures for over 170 countries.

BMI is a number calculated from an individual’s height and weight, which can be used as a reliable indicator of body fatness. Plug your own statistics into their calculator to see your personal BMI number, and learn how you stack up. You’ll also see how much the planet would strain (or relax) if everyone on the planet weighed as much as you.

As with all large data sets, the calculation holds a margin of error. A faint band appearing on either side of your indicated BMI measure indicates the probable standard deviation: your result is likely within these boundaries.

BMI can screen for weight categories that may lead to serious health problems.

The USA’s Center for Disease Control (CDC) offers two BMI calculator widgets that can be used by adults, teens and children to calculate their personal BMI. The CDC calculators also provide your corresponding weight category.

Use this calculator for adults, 20 years old and older, and this one for kids and teens.

Global population is increasing, in both numbers and individual size. Rapidly urbanizing and quick to adopt the worst of western food trends, Middle Eastern nations are panting their way up the world obesity ladder.

Whether you’re spurred on by the Olympics, or simply embarrassed by being resident in the world’s fattest nations, your fitness plan will get a boost from these simple tools.
