The livestock and pasture management sector is currently facing several challenges, including rising operational expenditures and labor shortages, compounded by the demand for sustainable, efficient food production. The pressures they face require a radical transformation driven by technological expansion. These combined factors strain traditional farming methods, making technological adoption a matter of survival.

Autonomous systems have emerged as a solution, changing the agricultural landscape through unprecedented precision and insight. From intelligent herd tracking to automated land care, the equipment is unlocking new possibilities in agriculture.

The New Era of Agricultural Automation

The adoption of agricultural automation marks a transition from strictly mechanical labor to data-driven farming, backed by artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and the Internet of Things. It is not merely about the emergence of new gadgets but a necessary response to global pressures for food security and sustainability.

The approach utilizes a wave of technological innovation, including aerial drones, sophisticated robotics and analytics, to gather and interpret information with precision. For example, sensors and global positioning systems (GPS) collect data on animal health and land conditions.

The information undergoes processing by computer vision and AI algorithms before delivering actionable insights. Ranchers can then improve resource, husbandry and operational management before more critical issues arise.

Intelligent Monitoring for Superior Livestock Health

Researchers attach an Icarus sensor at the neck of a goat in Sicily.
© MPI of Animal Behavior/ C. Ziegler

According to experts, the global livestock monitoring market is growing exponentially, with a compound annual growth rate of 12.82% from 2026 to 2033.

One company, Advantech Co. Ltd., developed a system that uses AI and infrared vision to measure cattle’s body temperature as part of daily health screenings. The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona has also designed sensors to observe livestock behavior, productivity, environmental impacts, and physical and mental well-being.

The platforms process data from camera networks and sensors worn by the animals, including devices like GPS, thermometers and accelerometers. Ranchers can establish a baseline for each animal and monitor changes over time. For instance, the systems might send an alert if they detect abnormalities, such as illness or distress.

Receiving a warning about potential disease helps farmers intervene early on, providing rapid treatment that prevents the rest of the herd from falling ill. Overall, the proactive approach reduces economic losses from disease outbreaks and the high labor costs associated with manual assessments.

Optimizing Pastures with Autonomous Ground and Air Systems

The Treetoscope sensor collects information about water and soil nutrients to turn on irrigation systems at the right time

On the ground, robotic mowers maintain pasture quality, mitigate invasive weeds and ensure optimal vegetation for grazing animals. Their operational performance typically covers 1 to 3 acres per hour, depending on the terrain. Implementing this technology can dramatically reduce labor costs and boost worker safety by eliminating the need for manual machine functions.

Complementing these efforts, autonomous drones enable more precise and effective field mapping and surveying, crop and animal monitoring, disease detection, and fertilizer and pesticide applications. Farmers who grow high-rise date palms and walnut trees might use drones for pollination, which is a labor-intensive task.

The multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles cover 4 to 20 hectares per hour or about 30 to 150 hectares a day. For spraying, they usually come equipped with liquid tanks holding 5 to 50 liters. The targeted application decreases chemical waste and environmental impacts.

Farmers also reap a financial benefit. With an initial investment of $40,000 to $50,000, drones help growers recoup costs in just four to six weeks, making it a profitable and validating system for modern pasture management.

Integrating Autonomous Systems for Long-Term ROI

Those interested in integrating autonomous systems must carefully consider the return on investment. Although up-front costs often present a financial barrier, the long-term economic and operational benefits usually outweigh the initial price tag.

Ranchers can reduce labor hours and input costs for feed and treatments by employing data-driven decision-making to improve animal welfare and land productivity. Still, initial investments in these technologies often make them out of reach for many professionals.

Purchasing a GPS tracker for every cow might be unaffordable and impractical, depending on the herd’s size. Fortunately, industry innovations are helping overcome the financial barriers as researchers develop less expensive solutions.

Researchers developed a method for fitting GPS collars to select animals and tagging the rest with low-cost Bluetooth devices. The collars, which connected to the Sigfox network, enabled cost-effective tracking while delivering essential information about the herd.

The decision to invest in autonomous systems hinges on the unique needs of individual operations. Fortunately, these solutions are often scalable, so farmers can target the areas where automation will benefit them most. This allows them to phase implementation in a manner they can afford and still attain significant long-term returns.

The Future of Farming is Autonomous

Autonomous developments have proven practical and accessible for modern livestock and pasture management operations, addressing some of the more pressing challenges today’s farmers face. Although the tools require an initial investment, professionals cannot deny the economic benefits of embracing the technology. As the equipment continues to evolve, it will become increasingly necessary for secure and sustainable farming.

Sukkot, the Jewish harvest festival, is a time when Jews attempt to get closer to nature. They live in make-shift huts covered with thatched roofs, sleep outdoors, and celebrate fruits of different species. Which is why Sukkot (which is coming up in a few weeks) is a great time to visit a farm. There are lots of great farms in Israel – including organic goat cheese farms and educational farms intended to teach kids that farming can be fun – but when you’re trying to get your nature on it is probably best to visit one that lets you be a farmer for a day. Such as Bel Ofri in the Golan, which is hosting special food and wine-making workshops during the holiday of Sukkot.

Workshops will include sweet wine-making (from harvesting the grapes to crushing them by foot), olive harvesting and making olive oil, baking peasant bread in a special oven using special local herbs, and making cheese from fresh goat milk.

Less ambitions visitors can enjoy an eco-friendly meal at the farm’s restaurant, which is built around three ancient trees that continue to grow.

The farm itself is built in the style of an ancient village, Ein Nashot, that was located on the site during Talmudic times. Bel Ofri has it’s own vineyards, orchards, and olive groves, as well as facilities to crush grapes, grind olives for olive oil, and mill flour.

Visitor’s to the farm’s vineyard will receive explanations about the differences in wine-making processes during ancient times and today, and be invited to taste the farm’s own wine.

The workshops will be held from October 12th until October 22nd between 10am and 6pm.

Green Prophet’s new writer Rebecca shares her personal experience raising 5 female goats. She shares an easy goat cheese recipe too!

The first goats arrived to our garden by chance. Our friends needed to get rid of their goats urgently as their neighbours were complaining about the baahing. We weren’t sure what that meant, but we jumped at the chance. My husband and I were both curious, as well as in a genuine need to enjoy a morning coffee that didn’t have soy milk in it.

They were strange and nervous creatures, but the “baahing” didn’t bother us and we later discovered that the “baahing” stopped completely when one of the baby goats was reunited with her mother and returned to nurse.
And so began our journey with learning how to raise and milk our new friends and how to do it in the most efficient, yet humane way.

Goats are really sweet, fairly intelligent creatures. But what got me the most, was their incredible desire and ability to communicate with us. They would bleat in distress if they wanted to get out of their pen and go for a walk, or come back in to nurse or be nursed.

Baby goat hanging out with the chicken and horse.

Once when one of our goats was injured and bleeding, she came and sat by our front door, something that none of them ever do. They greet us hello when we arrive home and offer joyful cries at the site of interesting food. On the other hand, they show no expressions on their faces and will try to eat and chew most things that they see.
They tend to stick together as a group, always selecting the eldest and strongest goat to be their leader. We once found them, walking around our local synagogue, united as usual and chewing inappropriate things.

Milking 3 goats under 15

Milking them was difficult at first, but Asaf (my husband) got the hang of it quickly and knows how to milk three goats in under 15 minutes. The trick is having them respect and like you, but the ability to push them around a little when they misbehave. I have found the domineering factor a little difficult and when trying to milk our largest goat, I found myself holding on to her horns and being dragged across the garden.

We currently have five female goats. They eat a grain mix that we buy them as well as our leftover household scraps. We have a small bin that we keep in the kitchen, and all fruit, vegetables and dry grains go in there for the goats. Anything too wet or harsh, like cooked rice or eggshells go to the chickens. They need to live in an enclosed area as they have been known to destroy our garden and consume all our young trees if left unattended for even a few minutes.

Goats, like many other animals that are kept as livestock, go into heat periodically during the months of autumn, although this can last longer in Israel and the Middle East where it’s warm year round. They are pregnant for a duration of five months so they usually give birth towards the end of winter.

The birth of goat twins

Their births are incredible, fast and quiet. One of our goats once birthed twins at the side of the garden in the exact time it took us to finish our morning our coffee. The male baby goat needs to nurse for a few months, after which he begins to mount and bother his mother- this is when we separate them. We allow the female goats to nurse for as long as they need, this can be almost a year.

After that, the milk can be shared between them and us. Watching this overwhelming process has made me think twice about buying industrialised goat’s milk during the winter. I know that this is a time when baby goats most need their mothers to themselves and that we can share the milk once again around spring time.

This year, we milked three goats once a day. This produced almost three litres. We usually sold 1 litre of unpasteurised milk for 10NIS (about $3), which is a good deal although our customers had to put up with a lot of inconsistency. We made fantastic cheese with the leftover milk. This was our best year of cheese yet. It’s possible to make with all the commercial varieties of goat’s milk available today.

Fantastic (and easy) goat cheese recipe:

•	Place milk (doesn’t have to be super fresh) in a pot and heat until 75˚C, (milk will just be starting to bubble)
•	For every litre of milk add 1.5 tablespoons of good quality organic yoghurt (yes it does make a difference) as well as 2 tablespoons of vinegar.
•	Allow these to cook together for a few more minutes, turn it off and let it cool down completely in the pot. (on these cold winter nights you can even leave it out all night)
•	The cheese should float to the top, take this out and leave it in a large tea strainer. Add sea salt and other flavours at this stage and then allow the cheese to sit in the strainer that needs to be placed over a bowl.
•	Refrigerate for about two days, before transferring to a plastic container with a lid.
•	Comes out like a cross between cottage cheese and ricotta!

Yum.

So there’s a little sharing on raising goats in my garden in Israel. I hope you enjoy it and feel free to ask me about my experience in the comments below – or email me rebecca@greenprophet.com.

For the past few days Israeli farmers have been protesting a governmental decision to cut the amount of foreign workers legally permitted to come work in the agricultural sector, with the demonstration planned to continue tomorrow as well.

The growers have been demonstrating in several junctions across the country, and their most significant act of protest has been to cut off the supply of vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs, fresh fish and poultry to markets and supermarkets all over the country throughout the duration of the three-day strike. Essentially, the farmers are asking that more imported farmers hands be allowed to work so that they can continue to supply the Israeli public with fresh, local produce.

They are asking the government to reverse a decision that would make it extremely difficult for Israelis to be locavores.

A year and a half ago the government agreed that they would increase the quota of foreign farm hands from 22,000 to 26,000 – a promise that has yet to be kept. Avshalom Vilan, the Secretary-General of the Israeli Farmers Federation, said that “the government promised us the workers a year and a half ago and never delivered. Why should we believe them now?”

Fresh, local produce is what’s better for the environment by a long shot. All the energy and fossil fuels that go into packaging and transporting food from foreign countries is extremely polluting, and totally unnecessary for a country like Israel that is able to grow most of its own produce.

It is a little ironic, though, that the farm hands can’t seem to be local as well. Most immigrant farm workers come from Thailand, since Israelis apparently lack a desire to work in agriculture.

Impress your date and reduce your negative impact on the environment with a green-ified date.

Dating can be rough. Firstly, it can be hard to find that special someone (which is facilitated, in our modern times, by some form of online dating site or one of those popular US dating sites), and secondly, it can be difficult to come up with a date that is fun for you, your date, AND the environment. The classic “dinner-and-a-movie” date often involves a great deal of wastefulness since most restaurants are major resource and food wasters. But it doesn’t have to be. If you want to flex your creative side and show off some environmental muscle, try going on a green date.

Need some help? Here are some ideas:

1. Cook a homemade, local, and organic meal for your date. A home cooked meal is one of the easiest ways to someone’s heart. Put in the extra effort and make something a little more challenging and different for your date. If you need some inspiration for Middle Eastern recipes, search Green Prophet’s archives.

2. Take your date out for a meal at an eco-friendly restaurant. Not a cook? That’s ok, not everyone can be. But how about enjoying an eco-friendly meal together anyway? Look for a restaurant in your area that uses mostly local (and, if possible, organic) ingredients with a largely vegetarian menu, and it’s an added bonus if the restaurant recycles. Some restaurant suggestions in Israel are: Cafe Louise, Mitzpe Hayamim, Goats with the Wind, and LovEAT. In Saudi Arabia, check out Pizza Fusion’s organic pizza. In Abu Dhabi, go out for some sustainable fish at one of Le Royal Meridien’s restaurants.

3. Go for a romantic bike ride. Take your date out to see the sunset on a bike, enjoying some nice scenery and some exercise along the way. Bring along some refreshments to enjoy at your final destination like some wine or locally brewed beer.

4. Get your hands dirty at a local farm. In our modern culture, many of us have to go out of our way to get physically active. Which is why when we finally do get to run around and use up some energy, it’s a lot of fun. Do something different and get your hands dirty at a local and preferably organic farm. In addition to getting some exercise, you’ll probably get some great fresh food to take home as well. Check out WWOOF for a list of farms near you.

Spend a weekend at an eco-tourism destination. Tourism destinations aren’t just for tourists. Go on a mini-vacation nearby that’s a little off the beaten track and try an eco-tourist spot. Read our tips for eco-touring in Yemen, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Iran, and Syria.
