Israeli designer Omer Polak has designed an adorable wearable vase that keeps a flower or herbs close to the wearer’s chest. The Boutonnière is a lapel pin made from blown glass attached to clothing via a small brass pin.

Exceptionally well-designed to even allow a spot of water at the bottom to keep the flower or herbs fresh for at least a day, the lapel pin is more than just a cute gimmick.

Perfect for weddings and other special occasions, the Boutonnière (which means button hole in French), also continues Polak’s fascinating exploration of our sense of smell.

For his graduation project S-Sense, Polak explored the life of an anosmic, a character who has no sense of smell.

“Smell is vital in our everyday lives,” said the designer. “It is a major component in our sense of taste and it has a wonderful ability to create memories and bring them to the forefront of our consciousness.”

The anosmic eventually learns to smell with “an odour-learning device that operates as biofeedback.” Once she has a grasp on scents she has never before experienced, she finds ways to amplify them with “designated jewelries.”

Which is how the Boutonnière functions. Not only does it provide great visual appeal, but it allows the wearer to choose a particular scent that they would like to carry with them throughout the day.

This particular scent may conjure up memories of walking through fields of tulips in the Netherlands with a lost love, or cooking in Tuscany with an obscure wild herb.

Whatever the purpose, we love the latest example of fine Israeli craftsmanship infused with an unparalleled combination of beauty, metaphor and neuroscience.
