After six or seven trips to Thailand, I thought I knew Bangkok. I’ve visited the busiest roads, like Khao San Road and its side streets. I’ve been to night markets, flower markets, malls, aquariums, and temples.

In recent years, I’ve only used Bangkok as a place to sleep before launching to Chiang Mai or for family adventures to Koh Phangan, Phuket, and other islands where life slows to the rhythm of the sea. But I had never really explored Bangkok itself with teens until now.

With two teenagers in tow and four nights to spare, we decided to give Thailand’s capital the attention it deserved. My son had one request: he wanted to rent electric bikes. A friend of his had explored Japan this way, and he was convinced Bangkok would be just as exciting.

He was right.

Ebikes were our best family activity in Bangkok

After a quick search, I found Go Bangkok Tours (also known as Go Bangkok E-Bike), a highly rated small-group bike tour company run by a Dutch expat named Ray. The company is based in Bang Rak, one of Bangkok’s oldest and most fascinating neighborhoods, not far from Tower Club at Lebua, the gloriously over-the-top hotel famous for its sweeping city views and its cameo in The Hangover Part II. (Side note: I want to stay there next time.)

We booked online without prepayment, showed up with our passports, and were welcomed like old friends. The atmosphere was relaxed and personal. There was plenty of water to drink and even a coconut waiting in the fridge. This wasn’t a giant tour bus operation. It felt more like joining a local friend who happened to know every secret alleyway in Bangkok.

Is it safe to bike in Bangkok with kids?

This was the first question everyone asked when we returned home. “Are you crazy? How do you ride a bike in Bangkok?”

I hadn’t really thought about it because my kids ride bikes in major cities, and we know that in the busiest cities, cars get stuck in traffic and move slowly. I was mostly concerned about the pollution, and surprisingly, it was the least choking air I’d ever experienced in Bangkok.

Bangkok traffic is legendary. Motorbikes weave between cars. Tuk-tuks, which you can hail like an amusement ride, dart in every direction. Crossing the street can feel like a strategic exercise. But the tour was surprisingly safe, except when one rider ran out of power. More on that later.

Our guide was a local Thai, and the tour moved at a relaxed pace. We occasionally crossed busier roads, but most of the ride followed narrow lanes, quiet alleyways, and pedestrian-friendly pathways. Much of the time we were far from heavy traffic, weaving between the backyards and alleys of local communities.

And because the bikes were electric, nobody got exhausted.

Why electric bikes are perfect for teenagers

If you’ve ever traveled with teenagers, you know the secret to a successful trip: to get them off their phones, you need to keep them moving, keep them engaged, and keep them from melting in the heat.

Bangkok in April was blisteringly hot, one of the hottest stretches of weather I’ve experienced in Thailand. The electric bikes solved everything. The pedal assist did most of the work. We still felt active, but there was almost no strain. My teens loved the sense of freedom, gliding through the city with just enough speed to feel adventurous without any real effort.

For families, this is the sweet spot between sightseeing and fun.

One caveat: your teen needs to be at least 160 cm tall.

Ebikes take you to the hidden Bangkok you’d never find in four days

The real magic was seeing parts of Bangkok we never would have discovered by taxi or train.

We passed through narrow canals and quaint neighborhoods where we saw turtles and peacocks. We pedaled through hipster cafés and street art districts, meeting Thai influencers along the way. We explored quiet Buddhist temples, stopped at the bustling flower market, visited a famous hipster coffee shop, and rode through riverside communities before returning by ferry with our bikes.

Another highlight was sampling a strong local herbal spirit nicknamed the Thai answer to Jägermeister. My teenagers were not allowed to join in, and they still haven’t forgiven me.

Feeding turtles in Bangkok

Oddly enough, the most memorable part of the day was feeding turtles.

We stopped beside a canal where there was a pond, and we were given a small bag of sausage pieces. For nearly twenty minutes, my kids and I sat together, placing the sausage on sticks and offering it to enormous turtles waiting below. They fought for our meat sticks, and we loved every minute of it.

It was simple, slightly ridiculous, and absolutely unforgettable.

A four-hour shortcut to understanding Bangkok

Bangkok can be overwhelming. It’s enormous, hot, crowded, and not particularly walkable unless you know exactly where you’re going.

This electric bike tour gave us an insider’s introduction on day one. By the end, we understood the city better and knew which neighborhoods we wanted to revisit.

We also learned about Buddhism, temple etiquette, and the daily rhythms of life in Thailand.

Did you know that spirits in Thailand have a favorite treat?

Those little shrines outside homes, hotels, and businesses are there to attract spirits and ghosts so they don’t move in with you. And their snack of choice? Red Fanta.

If you want to make an offering, crack open a bottle and add a straw.

Don’t avoid Thailand during the rainy season

Warm tropical rain can be part of the adventure. Getting drenched in Bangkok while riding an electric bike sounds less like a problem and more like a story your family will tell for years.

Cost and value

There are several bike tours on offer in Bangkok. Ours cost around $50 per person, which felt very reasonable considering:

Four hours of guided exploration

Electric bike rental

Ferry ride

Snacks and drinks

Expert local guidance

And for the Dutch guest who ran out of power on his stand-up scooter, there was an extra battery pack fully charged and ready to go.

Near the end of the trip, there was one stretch along a busy road where our guide instructed us not to stop under any circumstances. That, of course, was exactly where his battery ran out.

For us, it was easily one of the best family activities in Bangkok.

Our verdict: 10 out of 10

We’ve done temples, beaches, jungle adventures, and countless city tours.

This electric bike tour in Bangkok stands out as one of our favorite travel experiences in Thailand.

If you’re anywhere near Sri Thanu on Koh Phangan, Thailand, around the yoga centers: Zen Beach, Haad Yao, or Salad Beach—make time for Street Vegan. It’s vegan and so satisfying that one meal might convince you that eating plant-based is not a compromise. I suggest for any vegan restaurant owner or chef to come to this modestly-priced venue to learn from a master.

I’ve been to Koh Phanghan a handful of times but things there change fast. Street Vegan was recommended through our musician friend Harel Shachel, who spends a lot of time on the island performing (and eating), and it turned out to be one of those easy, memorable family meals you don’t overthink, you just go back.

Up in the loft of Street Vegan

Street Vegan is right on the main road and easy to reach by car, scooter or the shared taxi trucks. Inside, the vibe is relaxed but special. The upper floor feels like a treehouse, looking down onto the kitchen and you can actually see the food being prepared, which gives you confidence that nothing rushed, and everything made with care. You can say that about Thai food in general but this place is a cut above.

Fresh Thai fruit in a market in Thailand

We went around midday, the hottest month of the year, with the kids and ordered a mix from the menu to share.

The tofu cubes topped with fried onions were a hit—crispy, savory, simple but really well done. Another standout was the sautéed tofu served in cabbage leaves, fresh and nicely balanced. My daughter ordered dim sum, which was light and well made and filled with mushrooms I believe, and we also tried the sweet potato gnocchi with pesto which surprisingly good. Everything in the restaurant is gluten-free and meat and animal-product free.

The highlight for everyone was the chocolate cake. Which I do have have a picture of, sadly because we attacked it.

I’ve made vegan cakes with coconut butter and tofu but this was hand-down taking the cake. I might reach out for the recipe. The cake was creamy, rich, with a delightful crust made from coconut and nuts, and honestly hard to believe it was vegan. One of those desserts you end up finishing even when you’re full.

The guy beside us ordered the Buddha bowl and he looked like a satisfied regular.

What stands out at Street Vegan is the quality of ingredients. Thailand has incredible produce—fresh fruits, vegetables, coconut oil, palm sugar—and you can taste it here. But it’s also the effort behind the food. You can see the kitchen working, step by step, and it shows in the final dishes. The chef told me it’s endless work when I thanked her.

Street Vegan not trying to be fancy or trendy. Just solid, flavorful vegan food in a great setting. It’s open many hours until the night. I hope the owner can hold her stamina because it’s a place worth protecting and sharing. I remember years ago telling everyone to eat at Mama Poos. Now it’s the mama at Street Vegan.

If you’re on Koh Phangan, especially around Sri Thanu, this is a must-stop.

The winter months are the perfect time to travel to Thailand, especially when you get a cold snap or lots of snow. Warm tropical temperatures hovering around 86F, paired with a pineapple strip, a mango shake, and a beach anywhere south of Bangkok can cure anyone’s winter blues.

While Bangkok is fast (we enjoyed ebikes on our last trip with teens), it is furious and sometimes smoggy, and it’s definitely a place to shop. But instead of lingering in Bangkok we decided to take a slow boat up the Chao Phraya River to the Ayutthaya province to see ancient ruins and the spirit of ancient Siam.

We boarded the boat at 1PM and met with Teerapole who we’d been coordinating with via email. We met at a well-traveled temple and on a small pier where the fish are protected from fishing.

He tells Green Prophet: “I think the river culture in Thailand is becoming something of the past. Not many tourists have an opportunity to see a simple way of lives of Thais since boat travel is less popular than other means of transportation. It’s also amazing to know how local people have learned to live with nature for centuries.”

Over on the boat, the group was small, in total about 15 of us, and we had ample space and privacy on the renovated rice barge which is more than a 100 years old. A covered deck protected us from the sun, and the occasional hot rain. Around 1:30PM we pulled off the pier and headed up Chao Phraya River, passing endless barges trucking goods like freight trains or Mac trucks to and from Bangkok. At one point a passing barge hit a bridge and that was scary. We also had a toddler at the time and made sure she was wearing a life jacket the entire time because you never know.

Don’t expect the excitement of the turquoise water you’ll find down in the south on this river trip. This is a well-traveled river, giving credence to Bangkok being the Venice of the East. The journey takes you to the banks of the King’s Summer Palace (the one from the movie The King and I) gave us ample time to think and imagine a different way of life so connected to the water, and so far from the thirsty Middle East from which we arrived. The water is most murky and brown, without smell but don’t expect to jump in to cool off.

Factories that line river, including the Singha Beer factory are contributors to industrial pollution in the river as well. There are over 30,000 industrial facilities that line the river, and many of these are in clear view as we chug along.

The drive to Ayutthaya from where we were in Bangkok takes about an hour and a half by car. The Mekkala Cruise we took lasted about about five hours at night, and a couple more in the morning. We enjoy the slowness of going up river. It was a one night trip.

Along the way we couldn’t help but notice the sandbags, the general disorder and the waterline marked by paint or sand shadows, showing where the floodwaters had risen only three months ago. Even ancient river people attuned to the currents are not immune to the chaos of climate change.

But river people live simply, many of them parking their boats under their homes.

After a half day on board we get off to visit a fresh food market. Being a little late for the day, the pickings were slim. We returned home to find a wonderful candlelit dinner waiting for us. The food was the best so far that we’ve had in Thailand and the staff of four were very careful to make sure they prepared food to suit our dietary habits. I was eating lacto-ovo vegetarian and they got it without any explanation.

As for facilities you couldn’t be happier: The gorgeously renovated rice boat and cabins were spotless and well equipped with private toilets and showers.

After docking for the night, the next day early in the morning the boat started on its journey without us knowing it. Then we docked for a nice treat: we stopped at a Mon village (see the local food truck below), an ecological village that clearly was affected by the flood. Red flood lines were painted on all the electricity poles throughout the village. See how they shop for fresh food below.

Back on the boat we ate breakfast and continued along our way to the King’s Palace.

Run by the company Asian Oasis, the same outfit that runs a couple of eco-lodges in northern Thailand, the Mekkala Cruise was an overnight cruise that starts in Bangkok and ends in the old capital of Siam.

As revelers race towards the islands looking for parties and sunshine, an honest retreat is the Mekkala’s slow boat cruise bringing you closer to the every day people that inhabit the suburbs of Bangkok. The drop off destination is a perfect launch pad for another day of must-see tourism sites: the King’s Palace, and all the 4,000 year old ruins in the Ayutthaya region. These are the ruins that will give you a bit of scope and scale of the Thai culture.

In the spirit of protecting and celebrating the river culture of the Bangkok area, we learned from our own intuition and the staff on board how important the rivers are for the way of life in Thailand. I give this boat cruise a big thumbs up as a gentle way to ease into Bangkok and the time of your life in Thailand. It’s easy to find a hotel and get glued to the beach life in Thailand or settle for default shopping trips in Bangkok. Taking a slow boat river cruise is a fun and easy way to feel authentic travel without missing your creature comforts.

We have also travelled to Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai as a family on an unforgettable trip, but we stayed in huts and homes that had mud floors and we ate from campfires. It will bring you smack dab in the middle of all the ruins, with the help of a motorbike taxi.

Thai people have an extraordinary grace, charm and sense of humor that you can really only experience in person, in their own country.

What are Thai people best known for I asked Teerapole when we were docked in Bangkok. What can they give the ecological movement? Tolerance, he told me. Thai people are open-minded and are easy to embrace change. I told him that the Thai people also have a lot to teach the world. Their family values, communal eating habits, their simple way of life should be embraced by all of us.

Thailand is known for luxury travel, great massages and food, unbeatable weather, lots of smiles and miles of beaches. But as inflation rises and the standard of living increases for Thai people, finding luxury on Phuket in your price range won’t be easy.

For about $200 a night you can get a room in a medium+ star hotel close to the beach, the strip of shops that offer mango shakes, pancakes, pad thai. For much less you can travel to the North and visit hill tribes and villagers in the areas of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, which is really not to be missed. We sent our kids to live with a hill tribe in Chiang Mai. You can too!

A resort in the jungle, on Phuket Island, Thailand

But if you can increase your budget for a few days, a trip to Keemala, an eco luxury resort in the jungle, offers a mini vacation inside the regular fun of Thailand. It costs about $900 a night for a luxury pod, with two floors, and a private pool, and for a few days you can dream away to the sound of crickets at night and quiet during the day at the large pool or spa.

Daily yoga lessons in a cave and cultural enriching crafts (like weaving plant fronds) are part of the deal at Keemala, along with the regular fare you can find at any Thai spa: massages, facials, and alternative treatments.

Keemala caught my eye from the sea when we were on a boat trip coming home from a hidden beach. It’s not on the beach in Phucket, but a half hour walk or short taxi drive to a small Muslim village down by the coast, and taxis in Thailand, including Thailand car rental with driver, are affordable and convenient.

The concierge gives you a checklist of what you expect before your arrival, including what kind of pillows you like and how many. You will be given hand-crafted luxury soaps and creams and coffee you can grind in an old fashioned coffee grinder in the mini bar area on the first floor of your pod.

Be aware of shifting policies as the government moves to reclassify it as a drug

Even before it was recreationally legal it was easy to find cannabis on the streets of Thailand. Head to a busy Phuket a couple of years ago, and cannabis pre-rolls were as easy to find as a Thai pancake. Last year when we were in Koh Phangan we went on an ATV tour to an organic farm. They offered hydroponically-grown lettuce and organic honey to us, along with jars of cannabis – all for sale.

But what could have been a boost to local and international tourism (it was the Thais from Bangkok who bought the cannabis in the end on our ATV trip) is falling out of favor with the mainstream Thai public.

About 76% of people who took part in a survey in Thailand said they “totally agreed” or “rather agreed” with their leader’s policy u-turn to re-criminalize the plant, according to a survey by the National Institute of Development Administration.

Related: our family trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand

The poll was conducted via phone between May 14 and 15 among 1,310 Thai nationals aged 18 and above. About 23.4% disagreed with the move, while 0.9% declined to answer or said they had no interest in the issue. Thailand’s latest prime minister Srettha Thavisin, nicknamed Nid, is a Thai businessman and politician currently serving as the prime minister of Thailand since 22 August 2023.

The proposed policy reversal is a blow for Thailand’s nascent cannabis industry after decriminalization was pitched as a way to boost agricultural income and the country’s wellness tourism industry.

Related: high tech shisha helps you smoke 100 cigarettes an hour

Srettha has vowed to restrict the use of marijuana to medical purposes. Canada is one of few countries in the world where medical cannabis legal. Varying stages of legality can be found in the United States but laws vary from state to state. While Israel is a medical cannabis research leader, recreation cannabis is not legal. A Telegram drug dealer recently got 8 years in jail for enabling cannabis buying and selling. Cannabis use, and even detection in your blood from previous use can put you in jail in the United Arab Emirates.

With changing laws in Thailand, tourists should exercise caution when using cannabis there. Thailand can be cruel and strict with tourists who break their laws.

About 75% of respondents in Thailand support the restricted use of cannabis for medical reasons, while 19% said the government shouldn’t implement any policies to support the use of the plant, the latest poll showed.

Cannabis advocacy groups last week rallied to protest Srettha’s order, asking the government to reconsider the plan to protect the interest of a rising industry and a large community of growers. Thailand’s lush tropical climate could be a great place to establish cannabis factories for export.

Almost 8,000 dispensaries and a large number of consumer-agro firms have cropped up across Thailand.

There is no promising way to calculate the health of a country. The best one can do is to rely on metrics such as environmental factors, average life expectancy, and other signifiers to list one country on top of the other. It is the only way to determine the healthiest countries in the world. Other factors such as happiness and satisfaction with one’s life come into play.

It is not only about how developed a country is or what an average person’s annual income is either. Other factors such as alcohol consumption, smoking habits, obesity rates, and many other factors can also contribute to a country’s position in the list of healthiest countries across the world.

Thanks to tons of research and case studies, the disadvantages of alcohol consumption are not unknown to people anymore. Understanding the potential harm alcohol causes, it is fair to assume that Indonesia, a country with the lowest rate of alcohol consumption, will make it to the list of healthiest countries.

Indonesia is a Muslim-majority country with a strict ban on alcohol consumption. People who consume alcohol in Indonesia are frowned upon. In addition, the excessive taxes on alcohol also help in deterring people from purchasing and consuming alcohol.

Hungary

Vaccinations have made healthcare easier and more accessible for millions of people worldwide. While people have different points of view about vaccinations, Hungary remains the country with the highest vaccination rate, with more than 99.9% of children vaccinated against children. The benefits of reliance on vaccination have contributed to strengthening their overall health.

Experts agree that improving the healthcare system of Hungry can bring it to the top of the list. As the country’s vaccination efforts continue to strengthen, they may gain a lot of benefits from expert healthcare providers and dedicated nurses.

Iceland

Geothermal powered nature hot tubs in Iceland.

Smoking is very detrimental to your health. It is a truth that has been established for decades. Keeping this in consideration, think about a country to advertise about banning tobacco on mass media. Yes, Iceland also has the honor of banning all promotions on tobacco products. This is a very positive forward.

Although Iceland is one of the most high-income countries in the world, entertaining smoking as a habit can be a challenge to your budget. Hence, it is fair to say that smokers must think twice before visiting or moving to Iceland.

With the highest cigarette prices in Europe to keep people away from the deadly habit, many people are unable to afford this life-threatening hobby. In short, Icelanders care about health, happiness and wealth. They also value renewable energy, keeping the skies clean and the carbon emissions low.

Thailand is a great place to travel for comfort. There are glorious mangoes –– just picked and still holding warmth from the sun: they fall right into your hands or onto a plate of sticky rice. You will find that eating a great pad thai or going for a massage is as easy as breathing or going for a walk.

How can I describe Thailand quickly? Like your body is falling into the womb of nature –– it’s just a blessed place.

Traveling to Chiang Mai with the Family

It’s easy to travel to Thailand for comfort whether you are single or with a family. I have never met an easier place for that and have been there 5 times before my most recent trip. Thailand was there for me when I was freshly in love. It was there after a breakup. Thailand was there for me when I was pregnant with my first and it is where my second just started growing in my womb. We’d take them back there to play in the sand and jungle as infants and toddlers. We’d release turtles in their name. Send out lanterns to the sea with their hopes and dreams and blessings.

This spring after an isolating Covid period and with the kids at the perfect age for adventure traveling, we decided to take them away for family time and really invest in our experiences. This time we were going to go outside our comfort zone – we’d go outside the Thailand we knew: beaches, floating markets, temples, and beaches of Samui and Phuket. This time we would rely on my husband’s old memories from the early 90s to take us back to the mountains in the north.

Meeting the Akha People

Over the years my husband recalled traveling and meeting the Akha people three decades before. This was a trip to a paradise where you entered by elephant and came out leaving nothing behind. There was opium smoking, loads of smiles, and an innocence of mankind he experienced then.

He remembers it like a dream. And as an ecological ideal: Every scrap of paper, plastic – every bit – was saved and repurposed into something else.

We should go back, he says, but how?

I found Frans online, a fellow from Holland who is running an adventure tour company called Green Trails. He’d fallen in love with Thailand around the same time as my husband’s first trip. It was when Thailand was just opening to the world and the visitors couldn’t believe the bounty they’d discovered. Frans was easy to access and answered my query quickly: could you help us meet the Akha people?

Frans told me his company was providing accessible nature-based trips to Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai areas, along with itineraries that enable an extraordinary adventure in a short time. We could meet tribes people, even stay with them, but still have moments of comfort between the simple settings by staying in hotels during our stay. We had 6 days to spend in the north before our connecting flight back home. Frans jumped to help us plan a trip of a lifetime.

Authentic Family Experiences in Nature

Frans came back to us with a trip that would let us meet the various Hill Tribe people in a way that would be pleasant for everyone in our family, a girl 11, and boy 9 and two adults, one who can agree to hiking but who doesn’t love it much. Some people on the internet complain that these days visiting Hill Tribe people can feel exploitative like you are visiting a zoo. This is not at all what we encountered on our trip.

Frans arranged that we’d have an English speaking guide, Rung, who was from the region and who could communicate with the Hill Tribe people. Years’ long friendships and cooperation with Frans made our arrival welcoming without any suspicion. Thai people were still wearing masks at this time and many villages were no longer interested in meeting tourists, out of fear. But Frans knew who he could approach.

What to do along the way

We flew into Chiang Mai from Phuket and early the next day met Rung and Joe, our guide and driver. While driving to the areas of Chiang Rai and the hill tribe people we would have adventures along the way –– visiting avant garde museums, white water rafting, longboat sailing down rivers, visiting local markets and temples that are an art exhibit or spiritual exercise –– choose your own adventure. But it was planned and perfected by Frans, who over the years has learned what adventurous tourists would like to see. We were even able to add on adventures and make time for them if we saw something along the way that caught our eye.

But the blueprint of the trip was solid. Frans built us a trip that helped us experience the wild nature in Thailand that you would only find if you had a few months and a backpack. You could tell that the hill tribes he works with are coming from a long and trusting relationship that goes back decades, not years. For that, we were welcomed to these tiny villages even while the rest of Thailand was in semi lockdown wearing masks and keeping a safe distance.

Meeting the Palong People

The first encounter with the Palong tribe near Chiang Dao was meeting our guide and with him holding a machete we hiked from one Palong village Lahu to Pang How. We walked a few hours along trails he had carved out the day before, while he picked native plants showing us what they are and how they can be used in cooking. We got inside the jungle, his land, where agriculture and eco-tourism are the mainstays.

After pointing out plants such as wild rattan and ginger and making us walking sticks from bamboo, we entered the village. His family and extended tribe offered us shy hellos and greetings and after time my kids and their kids started to mingle, my daughter making a friend with a girl her age.

They picked papayas, fed the pigs and got accustomed to village life which is basic but comfortable. Outdoor toilets and sleeping in small bamboo huts is the accommodation. The floor is made from dirt, but it’s packed tight like it would be in a clay house.

Some of the women taught us about the old ways of husking rice, and we were given a loom-weaving lesson –– my biggest take home is that they worked hard, sometimes days, to string together a meter of fabric that they assemble by hand.

Dinner was cooked by our host and our guide, and it was absolutely delicious and over-the-top. Our host and Rung worked for a couple of hours making sure it was perfect and exactly to our specifications: no seafood, meat or gluten. That’s a tall order in Thailand but our hosts arranged it with care.

At night the village girls of the village put on a show and my husband and our host took turns on a handmade instrument that kind of looked like a 3-string guitar. My family sang, we danced some and laughed our faces off at how the simplest, unusual encounters can make your soul expand wide. This is why we wanted to come here, It was for this. I was thanking Frans in my heart.

The Palong tribe, we learn, has its own colorful background. Not long ago they moved from Myanmar to Thailand and are distinguished by their rattan hoops and silver belt worn around the waist. The costume is a reminder of a bird, a mystical creature from which the Palong people are believed to be derived.

Meeting with the Akha People

An early morning with the dogs barking and roosters about, then we break-fasted and hiked around the village where Rung taught us about the village heart, the huja rawl. Up into the hills we visited the gardens of Sukhum, where fruits like mangoes grow. We trekked through to a Lahu village and then a Karen village –– and then started our drive to Thaton. We overnighted in a hotel and woke the next day to meet the Akha Tribe.

Along the way and cooling down in a cave temple – think ancient mystical cave where people seek immortality in Jitterbug Perfume? – we took a boat ride to a Lahu tribe village called Phatai.

We then continued to Chiang Rai and then to the Huay Mae Sai Waterfall where we met our local Akha guide from the village Ban Apha. When we arrived our guide Armue prepared our lunch, “jungle style” in a bamboo rod steamer he’d shucked from the forest. It felt like a Michelin Star experience. We dug in. High from the food and the waterfalls (only) we would learn that there is no more opium cultivation in the hills. That the tribespeople were eventually trained to manage agriculture and fruit trees to make a living. That living is now supplemented with homestays and eco tourism.

After lunch we hiked to the Akha village which was a pleasant walk through the forest and where our host and guide showed us native plants and told us folklore stories.

We arrived with a lot of excitement. Armue’s wife was stressed because the new baby goats weren’t herding in the right direction –– so my kids ran down to save the plants the goats were trying to eat. Have you ever held a bleating baby goat in your arms like a puppy? Our kids did this with wide smiles, while enjoying cats and kittens, chickens and a puppy near the hut.

Learning to cook authentic Hilltribe

We learned about the Akha clothes and were given a masterclass in cooking –– all suited to our dietary restrictions. We had fresh fish, soy protein, various soups, including a potato soup with red curry that I have recreated a few times since our trip. The highlight for me was cooking in the dark on the floor of the kitchen in an open pit fire.

I was just an observer but when the power went out and the rain came bolting onto our home-hut we had a taste of being Primal Man, but banded together in circumstance and ceremony. Our meal was magazine worthy and our beds were delightful, clean and private in a large bamboo hut resting on stilts on the edge of a jungle valley.

We arose to an endless feast again and were given a tour of the village and even peeks inside private homes. Saying goodbye was hard and I could have shed a tear because there is a true-ness and an authentic-ness to what we felt and experienced even though there was a financial transaction. It felt that there was joy for both sides in our meetings with the hill tribe people.

Our remainder of the trip didn’t fizzle out for a moment. We continued to a wonderful modern art museum. We visited iconic structures known by their colors: Blue, White, and Black. The Blue and White are temples, the Black House (Ban Dam) is a museum. White (wow) is for the Wat Huay Pla Kang temple, and its giant statue of Kuan Im, the goddess of Mercy. We took an elevator inside and I am still humming the chants of the monks and singers in my mind.

Over the 6 days with the adventuring in nature, riding down rivers in boats, waterfalls, trekking, caves, I couldn’t help but think of what an amazing trip this is for families but even more so dreamed of it as something my daughter could do with peers in a couple of years when she is a bit older. Eco-tourism, respectful meetings between the east and the west, jungle sports, great new cuisine, the safety and comfort of Thailand where the honey of nature is waiting for you to come and taste it.

“In general,” says Fran, owner of Green Trails, “we pay attention to tribal culture, languages, dress. One area, we have been doing well in are tours for schools and university groups. I want to develop this further because these trips are so rewarding for the students and the villagers.

“I want to focus on traditions, culture, and history as well as the preservation of heritage places and crafts,” he notes.

Getting there requires a visa

When planning a trip to Myanmar, you should consider your accommodation choices but you don’t need to plan too carefully because there will always be low-key laid back, low-cost places to stay like in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in Thailand across the border.

To get a Myanmar visa for US citizens, you need to provide information about your first few nights’ lodging. That’s not all, for the visa to be approved your accommodation must be a registered hotel, inn, or guest house. You can’t add a private address to your application form, ruling out homestays.

Also, camping in Myanmar is not permitted. However, that does not stop you from being in touch with nature.

Lodges in Myanmar are the perfect choice if you want to enjoy an eco-friendly vacation and enjoy the spectacular landscape the country has to offer.

Here we explain what you can expect from an eco-lodge in Myanmar and some of the best options for your stay.

What Is an Eco-Lodge?

Keemala in Thailand which borders with Myanmar, but farther down in Phuket.
An eco-lodge is a type of rural accommodation surrounded by nature. They usually accommodate just a few guests with a small number of rooms.

As the name suggests, eco-lodges are designed to have minimal impact on the environment. They are sustainable and make efficient use of natural resources.

Not only are they kind to the environment, but they also benefit the community by using local suppliers.

An eco-lodge also has many benefits for you, the traveler. Not only will you make a positive contribution to the local area, but you’ll also enjoy a remote setting away from the noise, hustle and bustle, and pollution of towns and cities.

If you’ve previously stayed in a green hotel, this could be your next step. Eco-lodges are similar, but you’ll be more immersed in nature.

Eco-Lodges in Myanmar

With many tourists becoming increasingly concerned about the impact they have on their destination, the demand for eco-accommodation is growing. There are now several eco-lodges throughout Myanmar, offering travelers a relaxing and inspiring stay.

Arakan Nature Lodge

The lodges and treehouses are built using sustainable sources and natural materials yet at the same time designed to be cozy and comfortable. Water is heated using solar panels. It’s a family-run business like most small hotels are in Thailand in Myanmar, and, as a guest, you’ll get an insight into local community life.
