Paris has long dictated what the world wears. But a quieter movement is reshaping that influence — one that covers more, not less. Paris Modest Fashion Week is part of a growing global shift toward clothing that balances style with cultural, religious, or personal values of modesty. Designers from the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and beyond are using the Paris platform to show that fashion doesn’t have to rely on skin to be expressive.

Flowing silhouettes, layered textures, structured tailoring, and inventive fabrics dominate the runway. The aesthetic is less about concealment and more about how fabric moves, how it frames the body, and how identity is communicated.

For some, modest fashion is rooted in faith: Islamic, Jewish, or Christian traditions. For others, it’s about autonomy: rejecting fast-fashion norms that equate confidence with revealing clothing. In a world saturated with hyper-sexualized imagery, modest fashion offers an alternative language. I can relate. In my early 20s I went through a hyper modesty stage to avoid the male gaze.

Nour Turban’s quintessentially Muslim Parisian outfit combined a beret with a headscarf

There’s also a sustainability angle because modest fashion made from hemp and linen often leans toward longer-lasting garments such coats, abayas, tailored pieces which are designed for repeat wear rather than seasonal disposal. Many designers in the space are also experimenting with natural fibers, ethical production, and slower design cycles.

Designer Hicran Onal

As luxury brands begin to tap into modest markets, questions arise about authenticity and cultural appropriation. Who is telling the story — and who profits from it? Paris Modest Fashion Week sits at that intersection: culture, commerce, and changing values.

One of the things I regret in my life is not buying a pair of Stella McCartney mushroom leather shoes at a TJ Max shop in Berlin. The price was within reach and they looked and felt so sturdy and iconic. All of us may have more chances to dance in sustainable style as Stella McCartney, the sustainable fashion icon and daughter of Paul McCartney, is working again with the fast fashion label H&M. Fast fashion, Zara, Shein, Mango and COS, show us that they aren’t going anywhere. What we can do is when we shop at these international chains is choose sustainable choices over those made from synthetics that leak microplastics.

“I’m excited to reunite with H&M after 20 years since our first collaboration. Reworking pieces from my archive brought back so much energy and joy. This second partnership feels like a chance to look at how far we’ve come on sustainability, cruelty-free practices and conscious design – and to stay honest about how far we still have to go—together.

“I am thrilled to have H&M join me on this road, real change only happens when we push from both the outside and the inside, and I’ve always believed in infiltrating from within to move the industry forward,” said Stella in a press announcement.

Stella not only delivers fashion, she’s the first of the big brands to actually integrate fungus, and plant-based plastics into her pieces, runways and collections. With Balena, she chose the Israeli biodegradable plastic company for her running shoes, she’s worked with cinnamon waste in these biodregadable shoes. And she uses a mushroom based leather for her fashion pieces in clothing and footwear.

When you meet someone, you are often judged and evaluated before you even strike a conversation, based on how you look and how you carry yourself. As much as we may hate it, your attire is an important part of your personality and does communicate a non-verbal vibe about you to the other person. That is exactly why dress codes exist for different occasions and are considered an important element of discipline. However, when you graduate out of your college, your dress codes are vaguely classified as formals and casuals. It often becomes difficult for fresh entrants in the industry to figure out the right way to dress.

Dressing right is very crucial when you are in a corporate role, especially if you aspire to assume a leadership position. Your attire should communicate that you are professional, focus and you mean serious business. This quick style guide will help you crack the ultimate style code.

Clothing

When you are working as a corporate executive, especially in a leadership role, your attire matters a lot. The way you carry yourself is considered to be an important part of your corporate identity. Your clothing is the most dominating element of your overall attire and therefore you need to pay attention to it regardless of your gender and position.

The best clothing option for any corporate executive is to go for a suit. A nicely stitched suit in hues of Black, Blue, and Greys paired with an appropriately contrasting shirt and a tie is a classic gentleman’s dress and you can never go wrong with that one. That being said, many people do not find it practical to wear a suit every day. Moreover, often weather conditions and work dynamics do not allow that kind of attire at many places. In that case, you can stick to a formal shirt and a dress pant. When choosing shirts and ties, pay attention to the kind of colors and prints that you choose.

Keep your hues and prints subtle and sophisticated. You wouldn’t want to walk into your office with a splash of colors. Some contemporary workplaces today encourage more easy-going environment and follow a smart-casual dress code instead of a formal one. In such circumstances, do not get carried away by going for something way too casual. Collared polo shirts paired with cotton pants or straight cut jeans are a great smart casual option.

For female executives, the basic guidelines remain the same. Ladies suits have been a huge hit in the fashion circuits in the recent past, so you can make the best use of the current trends by dressing up in a ladies suit. When going for a suit, make sure it is stitched according to your body requirements. For instance, the tailored suits from Ellaé Lisqué are well-fitted and perfect for female executives who want to stand out and show off. If suits are not your thing, you can put up a smart formal top paired with a skirt. Although females have a wider color palette to choose from but avoid picking up colors that are too bright or loud. You can go for darker tones of blues and red, however, stick to a single color or pair up with a neutral color instead of going all colorful. Even if you are personally okay with showing skin, avoid dresses that are too suggestive at your workplace. Wear something that is convenient, manageable and comfortable while at the same time professional.

Shoes

Your shoes are very much part of your overall professional attire. The classic hot always has been the closed toe high heeled shoe. Closed-toe shoes do not mean that you are allowed to walk into your workplace wearing sneakers or joggers. Invest in a good pair of formal leather shoes. Ideally, shades of black and browns are the best choices. The closed toe rule applies to women too, and ideally, women should stick to high heels too. However, if for some reason you are not able to wear heels, go for kitten heels or Wedges.

Remember that often your work will require you to move around and it is important that you wear something that would not give you sore feet. Therefore, even if you are used to heels, pick only heels that are high enough for you to carry all day. Wedges are a great alternative to closed toe heels as the offer relatively much more support and are relatively more comfortable. If you wish to stick to flats, go for pumps. For shoes, try to stick to neutral colors only and avoid hues that are too loud or bright.

Accessories

Accessories are an important part of fashion and style as they help to accentuate your entire look. Although you do not have to completely eliminate your jewelry and accessories from your corporate look, you still have to keep it very subtle. Even if you are a huge jewelry fan, leave your bracelets and necklaces at home when coming to work. The max you can wear is a small pair of studs in your ears, a finger ring or two and a watch. Keep other pieces light and let your watch be the most dominating element of your accessories. Watches have always been associated with class and luxury so invest more in this area. Tag Heuer Carrera has some super classy leather strap watches in its line that you can pick from. Whatever you choose, make sure that your accessories do not become a hindrance in your productivity and allow you to do your tasks effectively.

Hair and Makeup

Although there is not much to do with hair and makeup with men, still style it as professionally as possible. Ideally, avoid very long hair, but if you have longer lengths then avoid keeping them open. Make sure your hair is clean, shampooed and tied up neatly. Although females can leave their hair open, but make sure they are manageable and do not bother you amidst your work. You do not have to invest hours in the morning to style your hair. Tie them up in a neat bun or do a high ponytail or a braid. That would not only look neat and professional, but your hair will stay intact till the day end without bothering you. You can use a styling gel or a hair spray for extra support.

As for makeup, it is best to stay as natural as possible. Use the foundation that matches your skin tone. If your skin does not have too many imperfections, it is best to use conceal and correct and top it up with a good moisturizer and finishing powder only. Avoid heavy highlighters and bronzers and use a very subtle cheek tint. Keep your eyeshades neutral and add a liner and a mascara. If your clothes are dark toned, go with nude or earth-toned lips. If you have kept everything else very minimalistic, you may add a pop of red on your lips.

Back in the day when we started Green Prophet, “circular design” was a new buzzword and mostly just a slide in a PowerPoint deck—something sustainability consultants pitched people who knew nothing. In 2025, it’s different. Circular design isn’t just theory now—it’s practice. It’s policy in some of the boldest companies, cities, and thinkers who are reshaping the future.

The idea’s simple, at least on paper: instead of designing products that end up as waste, we design them to stay in circulation. You don’t throw it out—you fix it, rework it, compost it, or break it down for parts. But circularity today goes far beyond recycling. It’s about designing out waste from the very beginning—and building systems that restore, not just reduce.

Here’s what circular design actually looks like now—and where it’s heading.

We start with taking things apart: Literally. In a world full of glued-shut gadgets and planned obsolescence, modularity is the quiet revolution. Look at the Fairphone 5, made in the Netherlands. It’s not flashy. But if your camera breaks or your battery dies, you can swap them out with a screwdriver. That’s the whole point. No Genius Bar. No landfill. Dutch common sense. That’s my ancestry.

Designers in 2025 are choosing materials based not just on what they do now—but on what they’ll become next. Fashion is leading the charge. Stella McCartney’s working with Mylo, a mushroom-based leather you can compost. Pangaia’s printing T-shirts from seaweed and dyeing them with bacteria. It sounds like science fiction, but it’s already in stores.

Vegan mushroom leather, Mylo

Architecture might be the most exciting space for circular innovation. In Brussels, the government built the Circular Pavilion using 95% reclaimed materials. That’s right—steel beams from old train stations, floors from shuttered schools. In the UK, a startup called Biohm is creating wall panels and insulation out of mushrooms that clean your air and return to soil when you’re done with them.

Ehad Syed creates Biohm for circular design products

Biohm is a biomanufacturing research and development company founded by Ehab Syed in 2016 to create regenerative construction materials and packaging by growing mycelium into food waste or processing difficult-to-reuse or recycled by-products.

Biohm uses orange peel, cocoa husks, and other food waste, to develop and design construction materials such as mycelium-based insulation panels, plant-based concrete alternatives, and sustainable replacers for wood-based construction sheets.

Space. Yes, even space: Circular design is going orbital. The European Space Agency is prepping a mission called ClearSpace-1 that will grab dead satellites and haul them back down to Earth. Meanwhile, modular satellite “swarms” are being tested—think space Legos that can swap parts and repair each other, reducing the need for constant rocket launches (and space junk). Read our latest on sustainable aviation fuel for space.

Amsterdam or Rotterdam aren’t just talking about circularity—they are living it. The city has adopted the Doughnut Economics model and plans to phase out raw material imports entirely by 2050. Old bricks get reused. Procurement policies now favor reusables and remanufactured parts.

Milan is tackling food waste with logistics instead of guilt: it rescues over 130 tons of edible food every year and reroutes it to people who need it. Israel does this as well. Non-profits and volunteers collect tons of food after weddings and large catered events supplying it to those who are hungry.

Here’s the honest take: circular design is not a magic fix. It’s messy. It takes time. But it’s starting to change systems, not just products. When major cities, aerospace agencies, and fashion giants start asking: What happens to this at the end of its life?—that’s a shift. That’s design thinking that looks more like ecology than industry.

The brand offers made-to-order gowns crafted by a single artisan, ensuring minimal waste and a personalized fit.

In an industry notorious for its environmental footprint, demi-couture brand Safiyaa stands as a compelling counterexample. Founded by Daniela Karnuts in 2011, the London-based label has quietly revolutionized luxury fashion not just through its timeless designs, but through a business model that inherently addresses fashion’s sustainability crisis. While the industry produces an estimated 92 million tons of textile waste annually and accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions, Safiyaa’s approach offers a radical alternative—one where waste is eliminated before it begins.

“The most sustainable garment is the one you keep wearing,” Karnuts has noted, cutting through the greenwashing that often characterizes fashion’s environmental messaging. This simple observation forms the foundation of Safiyaa’s sustainability ethos, where longevity isn’t just a marketing angle but a core design principle. As consumers increasingly reject the disposability of fast fashion and question the environmental costs of their purchasing decisions, Safiyaa’s model demonstrates how luxury brands can align environmental responsibility with business success.

The brand’s made-to-order approach isn’t just better for the planet—it represents a fundamental reimagining of the relationship between fashion brands and consumers. Rather than producing seasonal collections based on predicted trends and hoping they sell, Safiyaa creates garments only when ordered, eliminating the industry-wide problem of unsold inventory that often ends up in landfills or incinerators. This precision-based production model has positioned Karnuts at the forefront of fashion’s sustainability movement, proving that eco-friendly practices can enhance rather than compromise luxury appeal.

Rethinking Production: The Environmental Benefits of Made-to-Order

Traditional fashion production follows a speculative model: brands create collections months in advance, produce them in volume, and then push them to market through aggressive marketing. This approach inevitably leads to overproduction, with the fashion industry routinely creating far more garments than the market can absorb. The result is staggering waste—deadstock clothing that sits in warehouses, sells at deep discounts that undermine brand value, or ends up destroyed.

Safiyaa disrupts this wasteful cycle through its made-to-order model. “Every Safiyaa item is developed and made to order at the brand’s London, New York, and Istanbul ateliers,” the company states. This approach serves multiple environmental functions simultaneously. It eliminates excess inventory, conserves raw materials, reduces energy consumption in manufacturing, and decreases the carbon footprint associated with storing and shipping unwanted products.

The environmental benefits extend beyond waste reduction. By producing locally in its ateliers rather than outsourcing to distant factories, Safiyaa minimizes transportation emissions that would otherwise be generated by shipping materials and finished products across global supply chains. This localized production also allows for tighter quality control, ensuring that each garment meets the brand’s exacting standards—another factor that contributes to longevity.

“Safiyaa remains an independent vertically integrated family-owned company, dedicated to bridging the gap between a bespoke made-to-measure service and customized technology designed to avoid over production,” the brand explains. This vertical integration gives Karnuts unprecedented control over the entire production process, from design to delivery, enabling a level of environmental stewardship that would be impossible in a more fragmented supply chain.

Material Matters: Fabric Selection as Environmental Strategy

While Safiyaa’s made-to-order model addresses the quantity side of fashion’s environmental equation, the brand’s approach to materials addresses the quality dimension. Karnuts has built Safiyaa around “luxurious fabrics” selected not just for their aesthetic appeal but for their durability and longevity—characteristics that are inherently eco-friendly.

The fashion industry’s shift toward sustainable materials has accelerated in recent years, with eco-friendly demi-couture brands increasingly embracing organic cotton, hemp, recycled polyester, and deadstock fabrics. These materials require fewer resources to produce, generate less pollution, and often have a significantly lower carbon footprint than their conventional counterparts.

Safiyaa’s emphasis on “rich colors and luxurious fabrics” reflects this growing awareness of material sustainability. By selecting high-quality materials that maintain their appearance and structural integrity over time, Karnuts ensures that Safiyaa garments remain wearable for years or even decades—a stark contrast to fast fashion items designed to last only a few wears.

This focus on material quality connects directly to Karnuts’ founding vision. When she launched Safiyaa, she was responding to a gap in the market for women’s clothing that matched the longevity and investment value of men’s tailoring. “It was thus that Safiyaa, named after her daughter and meaning purity, was formed,” the brand explains. This pursuit of “purity” extends to the environmental dimension, with Safiyaa’s materials selected to withstand both changing trends and physical wear.

Beyond Seasonality: Timeless Design as Environmental Practice

Perhaps the most revolutionary aspect of Safiyaa’s environmental approach is its rejection of fashion’s seasonal cycle. Where conventional luxury brands introduce entirely new collections multiple times per year, encouraging consumers to constantly update their wardrobes, Safiyaa focuses on “timeless, elegant pieces that endure beyond a single season.”

This seasonless approach represents a profound environmental statement. By creating garments designed to transcend fleeting trends, Karnuts challenges the planned obsolescence built into most fashion business models. Safiyaa pieces aren’t designed to look dated after six months—they’re created to remain relevant and desirable for years, reducing the pressure on consumers to continually replace their wardrobes.

“When it feels impossible to keep up with the latest trend cycles, Safiyaa offers a wardrobe built on foundational pieces that remain relevant year after year,” the brand notes. “Karnuts has focused on perfecting a core range of pieces that are designed to last, keeping up with consumer sentiment by introducing new categories such as bridal and loungewear rather than making larger collections.”

This philosophy aligns perfectly with the emerging eco-friendly demi-couture movement, which emphasizes “seasonless collections” focused on “timeless designs rather than seasonal trends.” By encouraging customers to invest in pieces that can be worn for years, this approach reduces the environmental impact associated with frequent fashion purchases.

Craftsmanship as Conservation: The Environmental Value of Quality

Central to Safiyaa’s sustainability credentials is its commitment to craftsmanship. Each piece is “made by a team of dedicated artisans to create elevated, versatile collections made for women by women.” This artisanal approach stands in stark contrast to mass production methods that prioritize speed and cost over quality and durability.

The environmental benefits of craftsmanship are substantial but often overlooked in sustainability discussions. Garments that are meticulously constructed by skilled artisans typically last longer, reducing the need for replacement and keeping textiles out of landfills. The attention to detail in construction—precise seams, proper finishing, strategic reinforcement—ensures that Safiyaa pieces maintain their structural integrity through years of wear.

“Known for sharp tailoring and form fitting silhouettes,” Safiyaa exemplifies how craftsmanship contributes to environmental sustainability. The brand’s emphasis on tailoring ensures that each garment fits its wearer perfectly, increasing the likelihood that it will remain a wardrobe staple rather than being discarded due to poor fit or construction.

This focus on quality over quantity represents a return to pre-industrial values in clothing production. Before the rise of fast fashion, garments were significant investments, carefully maintained and often passed down through generations. Safiyaa’s approach helps revive this tradition of clothing as long-term investment, with all the environmental benefits that entails.

Technology as Environmental Enabler

While Safiyaa honors traditional craftsmanship, it doesn’t shy away from technological innovation that can enhance sustainability. The brand is “committed to bridging the gap between a bespoke made-to-measure service and customized technology designed to avoid over production.”

This integration of technology into the made-to-order process represents an important evolution in eco-friendly demi-couture. By leveraging digital tools to streamline ordering, pattern-making, and production planning, Safiyaa can deliver customized garments with remarkable efficiency, reducing resource waste while maintaining quality.

“Safiyaa delivers power of choice and connects the craftsmanship to the client,” the brand explains. This direct connection between artisan and client, facilitated by technology, eliminates many of the inefficiencies in traditional fashion supply chains. Customers receive exactly what they want, artisans create pieces they know will be appreciated, and the environmental waste associated with mass production is avoided.

The Future of Sustainable Luxury

As Safiyaa moves “into its second decade of solid growth and global expansion,” Daniela Karnuts’ approach to eco-friendly demi-couture offers valuable lessons for the broader luxury industry. By combining traditional craftsmanship with innovative production models and a steadfast commitment to timeless design, Safiyaa demonstrates that environmental responsibility and business success can be mutually reinforcing rather than mutually exclusive.

“Imbuing traditional artisanal principles with pioneering technology are just part of Safiyaa’s commitment to leading a responsible, transparent and forward-thinking company with integrity and innovation at its core,” the brand states. This integration of old-world craft and modern efficiency creates a blueprint for sustainable luxury that other brands would be wise to study.

In a world increasingly conscious of fashion’s environmental impact, Safiyaa’s model offers a compelling vision of how the industry might evolve. By creating garments designed to last physically and aesthetically, producing only what customers actually want, and maintaining exacting standards of craftsmanship, Daniela Karnuts isn’t just building a successful luxury brand—she’s helping redefine what luxury means in an age of environmental awareness.

As consumers increasingly demand that their purchases reflect their values, Safiyaa’s eco-friendly approach to demi-couture positions the brand for continued relevance and growth. By demonstrating that sustainability can enhance rather than compromise luxury appeal, Karnuts has created more than just a fashion label—she’s created a model for how we might consume more thoughtfully in a resource-constrained world.

What we love about JAK: let’s start with apples…

JAK is a Lisbon-based footwear brand redefining premium sneakers through high-quality craftsmanship, sustainable sourcing, and timeless design. Designed in Portugal and crafted in family-owned factories, JAK shoes embody a commitment to style, comfort, and ethical production.

JAK firmly believe that it is possible to live more sustainably, consuming less and making better choices, for them and for the environment. Since 2014, on a daily basis, they question (and change) what goes into their products, where it comes from, how it is transformed and by whom. That is how they add value, that is how they make an impact.

Here’s the list of the most important materials in their products:

The fashion industry is one of the world’s biggest polluters, with synthetic dyes playing a major role in environmental destruction. Every year, textile dyeing releases over 200,000 tons of toxic chemicals into waterways, polluting drinking water, harming aquatic life, and devastating ecosystems. Conventional dyeing processes require vast amounts of water, contributing to severe water shortages in many regions. Meanwhile, synthetic dyes are often made from petrochemicals, leading to increased carbon emissions and long-term soil degradation.

The impact of synthetic dyes on individuals is equally alarming. Many dyes contain carcinogenic and hormone-disrupting chemicals, which can lead to skin irritations, respiratory issues, and allergic reactions for both workers and consumers. Prolonged exposure has been linked to neurological damage and reproductive health problems, making it clear that the dyeing industry’s toxic practices are harming not just the planet but also human well-being.

As consumers and brands alike search for sustainable alternatives, one company is leading the charge in transforming the dyeing industry—Algaeing. This innovative company harnesses the power of algae to create eco-friendly, biodegradable dyes, offering a groundbreaking solution to the toxic world of textile coloration.

Synthetic dyes have been the standard in the fashion industry for decades, but they come with a heavy environmental and human cost. The production and use of these dyes contribute to:

Water Pollution: The textile industry is responsible for 20% of global wastewater pollution. Many dyes contain heavy metals, carcinogens, and toxic chemicals that seep into rivers and oceans, affecting both marine life and human health.

High Water Consumption: Dyeing fabrics can consume up to 200 liters of water per kilogram of fabric, a staggering amount that worsens global water scarcity.

Carbon Emissions: The production of synthetic dyes relies on fossil fuels, releasing greenhouse gases that drive climate change.

Harm to Workers: Textile dye workers are frequently exposed to harmful chemicals, leading to respiratory diseases, skin disorders, and even cancer.

Microplastic Pollution: Many synthetic dyes are used in polyester and synthetic textiles, contributing to microplastic pollution in the environment.

With fashion brands and policymakers increasingly prioritizing sustainability, the industry is in desperate need of an eco-friendly alternative. Enter Algaeing—a company proving that nature itself holds the key to cleaner fashion.

What is Algaeing?

Why Algae-Based Dyes Work

Algaeing’s innovative process offers several advantages over conventional dyeing methods:

Zero Toxic Waste: Unlike synthetic dyes that release toxic residues, algae dyes are completely biodegradable and safe for ecosystems.

Minimal Water Usage: Traditional textile dyeing requires excessive amounts of water, while Algaeing’s process reduces water consumption by up to 80%.

Carbon-Negative Production: Algae naturally absorb carbon dioxide during growth, making the dyeing process carbon-negative and helping combat climate change.

Biodegradable and Skin-Friendly: Algaeing’s dyes are free from harmful chemicals, making them hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and safe for both workers and consumers.

Efficient and Scalable: Unlike plant-based dyes, which often struggle with consistency and scalability, Algaeing’s dyes can be produced reliably at a commercial scale.

The Future of Sustainable Fashion

When you buy a sweater you are going to want it to last years not just a season. You will want it to be warm and sustainably made, so the obvious answer is a sweater from the Spanish company babaa.

I saw a babaa sweater in green online and I knew I had to have one. It started with the striking emerald colour, but then I heard the babaà story, how they raise their sheep and knit their products, and knew I wanted babaà to be my primary wool sweater for the winter. babaa speaks about the place where we need to go to slow down mass consumerism and lack of connection to ourselves.

Maybe the biggest joy this sweater gives me is knowing that it journeyed through the Spanish countryside and if I look hard enough, I can still find bits of nature where the sheep travelled.

Looking decent is important to me, but I want my clothes to represent my values. It’s hard for me to buy fast chain fashion: it doesn’t feel good, it doesn’t look right, it’s not the right thing to do. Educated readers know that the skills of fine craftspeople in fashion are disappearing in Europe and around the world, now that Zara and H&M can produce clothes and shoes for a throwaway, runaway plastic culture.

How do we slow down and recoup what we are losing? Supporting artisan designers and the farms and the craftspeople who keep them in business, of course.

Of course you can go to a local mall and likely find something decent, but babaà is more than just clothes. It’s connecting us to our past, present and future.

babaà is founded by Marta Bahillo (pictured below), from Madrid. She studied Fashion and Textile Design in Dublin, Ireland and after graduating – with a particular passion for knitwear and natural textiles – Marta moved to Argentina to design womenswear for a major fashion house before returning to Spain and founding babaà in 2012.

According to Marta, “All the materials we use are 100% natural which means our yarns are not mixed with acrylics or any other synthetic fibres. Better quality material means warmer, longer lasting clothes that even improve with wear.”

A big part of their work in creating great sweaters is sourcing local providers and supporting the local textile industry. Their wool comes from sheep in the north of Spain where it compiled, processed, and dyed by Spanish artisans using traditional methods and tools, like the ones shown below.

According to Malta, “These sheep that you see all over Spain are the ones that provide our beautiful pure Spanish wool. Many of you see bits of nature in your babaà jumpers when you get them. Now you know where it comes from! We are very proud to support this traditional local industry so important for the biodiversity and the environment.”

Read more about the sheep shearing process here.

The sheep are also brought out to pasture through a ritual called trashumancia –– the seasonal movement of people with their livestock between fixed summer and winter pastures.

The cotton for the cotton sweaters is sourced in Andalucia, in the south of Spain. The wool and cotton is then shipped to a workshop in Barcelona where it is knit. Designs are all oversized to make you feel cozy and to leave space for growing children.

The fashion sector is one of the most polluting industries on the planet; only airplanes are worse. Like the concept of an ‘eco-friendly jet,’ slow fashion may sound like a contradiction in terms. ‘Fashion’ is synonymous with ‘change,’ which strongly implies ‘wastefulness.’ So you’re right to wonder what it means, and if it’s just another gimmick to sell you something. But sustainable fashion is real. So long as you shop mindfully and check the credentials of the company you’re dealing with, eco-friendly apparel is more than just the latest hot trend. Slow fashion is the way of the future.

1. More Time & Space

Most of us are suffering from a shortage of time and space, both in our home and in our mind. Investing in sustainable fashion is good for the planet, and it makes sense for the individual too. Classic, quality pieces free up valuable real estate in your closet and your brain. Having less to wade through to figure out what to wear saves you time and brain space, making it a win all the way around. Shop designers who create sustainable, timeless designs that will wear well for years to come, like Eileen Fisher and Vivienne Westwood.

For versatile and eco-conscious additions to your wardrobe, explore options like long sleeve sun shirts for women that combine function with style. These pieces are ideal for layering, offer sun protection, and hold up well through repeated wear and washes.

2. Less Landfill

Once upon a time, sustainability was the fashion. Wealthy individuals aside, most people had a set of clothes for work and something special to wear for worship and holidays, and that was it. Ditto for jewelry. Items were passed down from one generation to the next and nothing went to waste. What happened? The fashion sector decided consumers needed to buy more. Rather than 2 seasons just 20 years ago, there are now up to 24 fashion cycles per year. Clothes are also designed to fall apart so you must buy more. The result has been a $1.5 trillion industry which is great for sales, but not so much for the planet. Clothing production has more than doubled over the last 2 decades. The more clothes we have, the less we wear them, and the faster they wind up in the trash. Textiles waste in landfills increased by 40% in the US in just the 10 years between 1999-2009. Currently, only about 15% of textile waste goes to recycling. We must do better. Buy sustainably, wear what you own, and try consignment, both as a buyer and seller.

3. Reduced Carbon Emissions

The way textiles are produced really matters, and the type of textile matters too. Apparel manufacture creates about 10% of total global carbon dioxide emissions. Polyester is found in about 60% of all garments and producing it releases 2-3 times more carbon than cotton. If you’re thinking a natural fiber like cotton is the way to go, the answer is yes, but it’s not that straightforward because the way standard cotton is produced is less than ideal and requires the use of large amounts of pesticides. By contrast, growing cotton organically requires significantly fewer chemicals, resulting in healthier soil, as well as healthier workers who must handle them. Look for labels like Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Oeko-Tex, Better Cotton Initiative, and Bluesign.

4. Cleaner Water

The fashion industry is responsible for an estimated 20% of water waste around the world. To produce a single cotton tee shirt requires the use of approximately 700 gallons of water. That’s about 2 1/2 years of drinking water for one person. Synthetics are responsible for some 500,000 tons of microfibers that end up in the ocean every year, the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles. Add to that the 8,000 different synthetic chemicals used in the dyeing process, most of which are toxic to humans, animals, and the environment, and it’s clear things need to change. In China, it is estimated that about 90% of the local groundwater is polluted. The best way to clean up our water is by buying less and seeking out clothes made using sustainable practices.

5. Healthier Planet

Fashion brands are well aware of the hard facts about the waste they’re promoting, but businesses exist to make money. In some cases, this has created the problem of ‘greenwashing,’ or the unscrupulous practice of making a product sound more eco-friendly than it actually is. But there are plenty of brands, both big and boutique, that are legitimately taking steps to combat the pollution problem. For example, Adidas is developing sneakers from ocean plastic. Levi’s is working toward 100% sustainably-sourced cotton and renewable energy by 2025. Cuyana offers single-origin, traceable cashmere right now, and is committed to using 100% sustainable materials as early as 2022. Veja is a certified B Corporation, meaning it meets certain standards of social and environmental sustainability. Stella McCartney was one of the earliest adopters of sustainable fashion and, besides using recyclable and renewable materials for her apparel, also employs renewable energy in the company’s stores and offices. These are just a few examples, and there are many more who are serious about their commitment to a healthy planet.

As consumers, we have the power to vote with our wallet. Be smart: do your research, think before you buy, and wear what you have. Small steps really do add up.

It starts with a whisper from Rachel Carson in the 60s and starting now 2021, it’s going to be an ecological thunder. Maybe it’s COVID-19 or Greta Thunberg, or a general awakening of humanity, but haven’t you noticed how brands you love are adopting eco-friendly practices, even claiming to go carbon neutral from their source, and not by just buying carbon credits?

Green Prophet has reported on eco companies over the years and normally we love a novel idea like a good solar company helping Africa.

But companies unrelated to the just goal of saving the planet can also be part of the big idea. Here are companies doing cool things that are helping the planet in unexpected ways.

There are plenty of digital media companies out there providing a lot of information on eco friendly products, eco friendly brands, and what you should be looking for. We recommend you take a look at some of them and one of our favorites is the team over at Puratium. They go into extensive review of many brands and eco friendly products. Check Puratium out here.

Estee Lauder shows us that when it comes to the planet they are more than skin deep. To achieve Net Zero emissions and RE100 goals by 2030, Estée Lauder reduced its carbon footprint by investing in renewable energy. The company signed a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) for 22 megawatts of wind power from the Ponderosa wind farm in Oklahoma to cover more than half of the company’s electricity footprint with renewable energy technologies.

Next on our list is Everlane. It’s an American sustainable brand that focuses on timeless pieces, clothing, shoes and bags alike. If you visit Everlane’s website you will see that they give you a starting price point, but then you can chose to pay extra to sustain their green production process.

Everlane has headquarters in San Francisco, California, plus offices in New York. The company has now vowed that it will stop using virgin plastic by this year, 2021. In 2018 Everlane started a new campaign called ReNew where they create outwear crafted from the materials that were created out of 3 million recycled plastic bottles.

Teva sandals, seeing a revival from the 80s, just announced TevaForever, a partnership with the international recycling leader TerraCycle, dedicated to giving well-worn Teva sandals a new life. The recycling program reinforces Teva’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact and keeping waste out of landfills.

Well-worn Teva sandals have a soul of their own, shaped by every wild adventure they’ve weathered. When they are ready to be retired, there has never been a great place to go—until now. Through the TevaForever Recycling Program, well-loved Teva sandals can be mailed to TerraCycle at no cost to the customer, diverting them from landfills so they can be recycled into something new. Teva’s long-term vision is to work towards solutions to one day fully close the loop by recycling old Teva sandals into new ones.

Another fashion brand we love is Veja. Veja was founded in 2003 by Sebastien Kopp and Francois- Ghislain Morillion. The founders met with organic cotton farmers in North Brazil and wild rubber tappers in the Amazon to establish the production chain behind Veja. In 2006 Veja started using vegetable-tanned leather to produce its now world-famous sneakers.

The Veja trainers are made of organic cotton, wild rubber, and vegetable-tanned leather and recycled plastic bottles. These shoes don’t just look great, they are made from great things.
