Ever see the video Follow the Frog? We posted it below so you can have a good laugh before you go out and embark on a poor career choice as you save the world. While the video does an excellent job of branding products for the Rainforest Alliance Certified mark, it does a less good job of conveying the real jobs that are available to you that can and will make an impact in changing the world. Like the jobs in the solar industry; like the jobs available in the Middle East waiting to be filled by skilled people like you. The job we offer below does require some years of experience, there is no time like the present in building your experience toward the direction of the sun.

Consider working in Dubai for world-changing solar energy projects: Beresford Wilson & Partners is looking for a solar sales executive to run its mission of creating energy efficient solar energy installations in the Middle East. Salaries to live in Dubai will be competitive, and it’s a great way to secure a job in an industry that is only growing steeply upward. You will need to have some experience in the industry and some experience already working in the United Arab Emirates.

Not long ago Dubai was relatively undeveloped. Today it has dreams of bringing on the best and most novel sustainability solutions for the region, stewarding them in and implementing them across the entire United Arab Emirates. Foreigners are pretty free to live their own lives, and there are large communities of English-speakers and expats from your country in town so you won’t feel lonely as you adjust to the new culture which you can be a part of shaping.

The company is looking for a key Account Manager to join their growing sales team. And your job will be to develop the solar energy market in the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.

Jordan is very much in need of renewable energy. With ample sun, it is still one of the poorest countries in the world, and new energy initiatives can jumpstart ambitious projects the nation has in areas like water security. Read about Solar Mamas for some grassroots background. And see this project on hydroponics.

Solar panels give energy to the Jordanian palace

The sales job will involve promoting and selling products related to solar inverters. Inverters are key for increasing efficiency and output of solar panels and installations. Even if you are yet to be experienced in solar, it’s an industry that is easy to learn, and easy to fall in love with. The company is also working closely with the SHAMS initiative in Abu Dhabi. It is one of the world’s largest solar concentration plants, and it is diversifying the UAE’s Energy Portfolio.

If you want the sales job you will need:

5+ years working in the UAE with a Solar Manufacturer

Proven sales record

Fantastic market knowledge

Extensive network with EPC, Developers, Engineering Consultants, ETC

MORE ABOUT THE SALES JOB HERE

We all want to see a world move away from oil. And no better place to make your impact than in the Middle East, a region still so reliant on the power of oil.

Now watch the video below and have a laugh.

Key investors in renewable energy for the Middle East and North Africa regions will be on hand to discuss the criteria for securing project financing. They will present the case studies of the Shams 1, a 100MW plant in Abu Dhabi and the Noor 1, a 160MW (being constructed in Morocco). Meet the World Bank and more at the Menasol conference this May 6 to 7 in Abu Dhabi.

Understanding the details of how to secure project finance in the MENA markets will be crucial for developers in the emerging markets in MENA.

In Saudi Arabia, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates, where the most potential for CSP is evident, there are regulations and requirements that need to be fulfilled.

Some of the key factors to be considered are acquiring land permits, fulfilling local content requirements and the technical considerations such as having a proven track record of technology and selected equipment providers, according to the event organizers.

Who will be there to help guide the way?

Barbara Riccardi, Director of Global Infrastructure and Finance, Natixis Bank, a french corporate and investment bank, and Ulrich Schoppmeyer, Director Power, Renewables, Water, KfW Ipex, from a German banking group, will be evaluating these considerations and will be giving their first hand insight on granting the investment on the Shams 1 CSP plant in Abu Dhabi.

Understanding the difference between financing projects in the Middle East and financing projects in North Africa will be crucial for developers to know where to establish their future investments.

Jonathan Walters, Director, Regional Programs and Partnerships, The World Bank, will be giving his first-hand insight into the investments granted for the Noor 1 CSP project currently under construction in Ourzazate, Morocco.

Visitors to Menasol will also get the chance to see Shams 1 in person: Shams 1 is the Middle East’s largest and only operational CSP power plant and one of the largest in the world. With a power output of 100MW, Shams 1 solar field extends to over 600,000 m2 and it has over 250,000 mirrors.

For more information on the topics that will be discussed at MENASOL click here. Or contact Sarah Kingham at sarah@csptoday.com

Men can claim free land and no-interest building loans; couples get cash towards their wedding expenses. And next January, lucky residents in two Abu Dhabi neighborhoods will get high-tech trash bins.

The bins are actually owned by the municipality’s waste contractors, who will introduce the new technology in two pilot areas. The challenge will be getting everyone to place the trash inside the “intelligent” garbage cans.

Each bin is electronically chipped with its geographic and technical details. Garbage trucks will be fitted with a device that can read the bin data, and link to a central monitoring station which records collection times and alerts management when the units need washing. Compared to the electronic monitoring of private communications recently exposed in the USA, this data collection is minor; but unlike the US surveillance, this one the public welcomes.

The monitoring station can quickly determine the last pick-up and check if collections were missed, according to Dr. Salem Al Ka’abi, acting general manager, Center of Waste Management.

The pilot is aimed at squashing persistent complaints about inconsistent pick-up (residents making a stink about uncollected trash will receive quicker municipal attention), and better serving the emirate’s overarching waste-to-energy ambitions.

Green Prophet recently reported on Abu Dhabi’s plans for an $850 million incinerator plant which will convert municipal trash into green fuel. Trash collection becomes a critical link in the waste-to-energy chain as the plant must be fed a constant stream of non-recyclable garbage.

Abu Dhabi produces an estimated million metric tons of (non-recyclable) municipal solid waste (MSW) annually, which can produce 100 megawatts of energy, the same amount of power as the world’s largest concentrated solar power (CSP) plant, Shams which also opened in March in Abu Dhabi.

About half of Abu Dhabi’s trash will ‘burn’ into green electricity in new $850 million power plant.

Maybe you saw the wonderful movie, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. Or maybe you’d read stories on Green Prophet about Masdar, or Shams, the world’s largest CSP plant in Abu Dhabi. Arab nations and their economies are certainly not all about oil and natural gas these days, and in fact these nations are becoming leaders in amazing projects in renewable energy. Now in the news: Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates has just announced the creation of an $850 million incinerator plant which will take garbage from the city and “burn” it into green fuel.

The new plant is to be built at the Mussaffah Sea Port, according to The National, and is being commissioned by the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company. Suppliers and supporters start your business tender engines!

Figures estimate that a million metric tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) will be burned every year, to produce 100 megawatts of energy, that’s the same amount of power as the world’s largest CSP plant, Shams which also opened in March in Abu Dhabi.

The National Energy company which goes by the abbreviation TAQA will be looking for builders and operators, and to have the plant ready by 2016 or 2017. It is expected to run for at least 40 years.

Saif Al Sayari, executive officer and head of TAQA’s energy solutions division said: “The waste for our plant in Abu Dhabi will come from various collection points in the emirate of Abu Dhabi and will be diverted from landfill at Al Dhafra.”

Emirates Rail, the national railway of the region may be used to divert some of the waste. And waste will include solid residential as well as commercial and industrial.

Waste heat will generate steam to drive a turbine to produce green electricity.

“It is not too different to what we do at our other eight thermal power plants in the UAE, which all burn natural gas,” Al Sayari noted.

New technologies have produced better filters for removing contaminants that would otherwise enter the air. “The emissions will fall well within globally recognised guidelines, such as the Waste Incineration Directive, applicable to all European plants, of which there are hundreds,” Al Sayari noted.

According to estimates the 100 MW plant will prevent more than a million tonnes of CO2 or carbon dioxide from entering the air. Carbon dioxide is used to quantify all types of greenhouse gas including methane. Greenhouse gas emissions are what’s causing global warming and a forecasted radical climate change.

The plan here isn’t just to burn everything in sight, but to use the incinerator as a last stop for all waste that cannot be sorted and recycled. The City of Abu Dhabi currently produces about 5,000 tonnes of waste per day. The new plant will consume about half of that. A small pilot will be built on Delma Island before the larger plant goes into operation.

Meanwhile in other good news, Westin Abu Dhabi is turning food waste from its golf resort into fertilizer, and the city of Abu Dhabi’s area farms (yes there are farms in the desert!) is converting farm waste into compost.

A new report published by Green Tech Media (GTM) Research pins the surge from today’s near-negligible production on rapidly rising energy demand spurred by MENA economic expansion, population growth, and urbanization. It helps that the region is supersaturated with sunlight.

Factor in rising opposition to nuclear development and growing public awareness of the environmental sins of fossil fuels, and solar’s sunny reception makes perfect sense. Plus renewables, specifically concentrated solar (CSP) and photovoltaics (PV), would provide a secure domestic substitute for state-subsidized oil-generated electricity.

Saudi Arabia and Turkey are expected to account for 70 percent of MENA’s total demand; each nation has unique motivations and strategies.

Conservation of oil for export is driving Saudi’s solar targets: 16GW of PV and 25GW of CSP by 2030. Turkey’s swing towards solar is a defense against its tenuous reliance on imported Russian and Iranian gas.

Saudi production will be based on large-scale ground-mounted arrays and CSP plants. Turkey will go with commercial and industrial rooftop PV segments.

In 2005, Turkey was the first MENA nation to establish a feed-in tariff (FIT), a limited program that failed to create adequate demand to attract large manufacturing. But with a retooled FIT in place and favorable renewable energy policies, Turkey’s predicted to experience significant PV demand. The nation has a 2023 solar target of 3GW, a planned capacity that GTM believes they’ll significantly exceed.

Abu Dhabi is moving forward with Shams-1, the world’s largest single-unit (100MW) concentrating solar power plant. Qatar plans to install 1.8 GW of PV capacity by 2014 and Dubai aims to source 5% of its power supply from solar by 2030. Then there’s Abu Dhabi’s EU-backed Desertec project.

Jordan and Morocco also have solar ambitions.

Last December, Jordan announced the kingdom’s first FIT. Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) Commissioner Mohammad Hamid told pv-tech,“With rising international oil prices, the government has been looking for ways to reduce electricity demand and costs. We found that the best way to achieve both is by encouraging Jordanians to go solar.” ERC claims that solar could save individuals and small to medium sized businesses up to 70% on their monthly bills.

Intentionality is great, but implementation demands strong policies and reasonable regulatory frameworks. In a region experiencing dramatic political and social change, solar’s future remains dubious.

The report was authored GTM Research analyst Scott Burger in collaboration with the Emirates Solar Industry Association. Burger presented highlights at the World Future Energy Summit on January 16th, describing major stakeholders, overall market structure, and long term outlook of each solar market in the region.
