<p>Onat Öktem, <a title="Posts tagged with Ziya Imren" href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/ziya-imren/" rel="tag">Ziya Imren</a> and Zeynep Öktem are among the most exciting <a href="http://www.greenprophet.com/2013/05/jds-architects-green-instanbul/">eco-minded architects</a> working in Turkey, and Bird&#8217;s Nest is also among their most unique projects. Eschewing the bigger is better thought pattern, this <a href="http://www.greenprophet.com/2013/06/unhcr-ikea-solar-powered-refugee-shelter/">solar-powered accessory dwelling</a> &#8220;perches&#8221; on existing buildings to create extra space.<span id="more-96540"></span></p>
<p>Albeit designed as a music room for schools that lack the space and appropriate insulation to provide budding musicians with an inspiring place to cultivate their musical genius, Bird&#8217;s Nest attaches to the roof of just about any existing building.</p>
<p>A small structure with a sloped roof designed to harvest rainwater and prevent harmful runoff in urban environments, the nest could also be used to provide housing for homeless citizens, studio space for other artists, or a little accessory dwelling for guests.</p>

<p>A modular structure that ensures flexibility, the Bird&#8217;s Nest boasts numerous sustainability features to mitigate its environmental footprint.</p>
<p>Rooftop solar panels are optimized for maximum solar energy absorption, but occupants won&#8217;t require a great deal of energy in the first place thanks to passive design interventions that makes use of natural daylight to illuminate the interior throughout the day, and solar gain to limit the need for mechanical heating and cooling.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Birds-Nest-by-Onat-Oktem-Ziya-Imren-and-Zeynep-Oktem-03.jpg"><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-96551" alt="Bird's Nest, ONZ Architects, Parasitic Architecture, Green design Turkey, eco architects Turkey, solar power, green design, sustainable design, " src="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Birds-Nest-by-Onat-Oktem-Ziya-Imren-and-Zeynep-Oktem-03.jpg" width="660" height="417" srcset="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Birds-Nest-by-Onat-Oktem-Ziya-Imren-and-Zeynep-Oktem-03.jpg 660w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Birds-Nest-by-Onat-Oktem-Ziya-Imren-and-Zeynep-Oktem-03-350x221.jpg 350w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Birds-Nest-by-Onat-Oktem-Ziya-Imren-and-Zeynep-Oktem-03-560x353.jpg 560w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Birds-Nest-by-Onat-Oktem-Ziya-Imren-and-Zeynep-Oktem-03-370x233.jpg 370w" sizes="(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px" /></a></p>
<p>A mechanical skylight, for example, permits diffused light to permeate the interior, and interacts with cutouts on either end of the small &#8220;parasitic&#8221; pod to flush air throughout.</p>
<p>These photovoltaic panels are also used to heat the interior and purify collected rainwater. This in turn is used to irrigate a small rooftop garden that improves air quality and creates a healthy green aesthetic &#8211; particularly for urbanites.</p>
<p>If you haven&#8217;t been following <a href="http://www.greenprophet.com/2013/02/flying-carpet-of-sea-plastic-among-yap-istanbul-modern-finalists/">ONZ Architects&#8217;s work</a>, take a look at their <a href="http://www.greenprophet.com/2010/11/the-greenest-mosque/">striking eco-mosque</a>, which one the Best <a href="http://www.greenprophet.com/2010/07/eco-mosque-england/">Freestanding Religious Structure</a> in the Faith in Place competition.</p>

Israeli writer <a href="http://www.etgarkeret.com/">Etgar Keret</a> commissioned <a href="http://centrala.net.pl/our-work/keret">Jakub Szczęsny from Centrala</a> to build a tiny house between the crack of two buildings in Poland. Designed more as an artistic platform for intellectual engagement than a serious dwelling, this parasitic structure will be wedged between 22 Chłodna St. and 74 Żelazna St., Warsaw.</p>
<p><span id="more-79504"></span></p>
<p><a href="http://www.greenprophet.com/2012/07/4-foot-parasitic-keret-house/keret-house-jakub-szczsny-2/" rel="attachment wp-att-79508"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-79508" title="Keret House by Jakub Szczsny" src="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Keret-House-Jakub-Szczsny-2.jpg" alt="Minimalist, Etgar Keret, Jakub Szczsny, Centrala, Poland, Warsaw, Parasitic structure, Keret House, Architecture" width="560" height="385" srcset="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Keret-House-Jakub-Szczsny-2.jpg 560w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Keret-House-Jakub-Szczsny-2-350x240.jpg 350w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px" /></a></p>
<p>Remarkably, the narrow Keret House will feature just about all of the amenities of a &#8220;normal&#8221; home, including a kitchen, bathroom, workstation and a bedroom.</p>
<p>Furniture has to be no more than 4 feet wide to ensure that there is plenty of space for passage, but with only 48 square feet to work with, furnishings will be kept to an absolute minimum.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.greenprophet.com/2012/07/4-foot-parasitic-keret-house/keret-house-jakub-szczsny-3/" rel="attachment wp-att-79509"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-79509" title="Keret House by Jakub Szczsny" src="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Keret-House-Jakub-Szczsny-3.jpg" alt="Minimalist, Etgar Keret, Jakub Szczsny, Centrala, Poland, Warsaw, Parasitic structure, Keret House, Architecture" width="560" height="464" srcset="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Keret-House-Jakub-Szczsny-3.jpg 560w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Keret-House-Jakub-Szczsny-3-350x290.jpg 350w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px" /></a></p>
<p>The home is reached through remote-controlled steps that extend and retract, so once everyone is safely inside the small space, it&#8217;s possible to close up the steps to ensure ultimate privacy.</p>
<p>Construction of the prefabricated steel structure is underway just outside of Warsaw and the home is slated for completion by October, 2012. Once that happens, leading intellectuals will be invited to enjoy the unique creative work conditions in the heart of Wola.</p>
