When it comes to ecological deodorant I’ve tried them all in countries around the world. The deoderant crystals, roll-ons, and pots of paste you slide onto your pits with your fingers. It’s come to a point where I can’t trust the eco deodorants because they don’t work, and I can’t stand the non-eco solutions because of the fake smells and the obvious health risks.

Ask my friends on a sunny afternoon in the Middle East: don’t hug me. I smell.

Now it hasn’t been put to the true test of weeks or months, but so far so good: It seems that I have found deodorant salvation in a little non-plastic tube made by a company in New Mexico – a 60-person team making products, mainly deodorant under a brand called Humble.

I bought a Humble deodorant at Nature’s Emporium near Toronto. The scent I found –  bergamot and ginger is – a pleasure, with bergamot being my favorite go to scent. It’s light and citrusy.

Humble’s simple tube makes it easy to apply a few layers of the creamy but dry when applied.

The fact that Humble works is what works for me. I have read some mixed online reviews about it staining clothing:this might be from the MCT, a coconut derived oil used in the formulation but I haven’t noticed any problems. My wardrobe is pretty basic and since I have a sweat problem I tend to avoid pastel colors and colored silks. I work and live in my clothes and Humble, so far so good.

The main ingredients in Humble are things you can probably cook together on your own from products you buy at a pharmacy: MCT, corn starch, baking soda, and beeswax. And that’s what you will love about this product.

The harsh desert climate created all kinds of models for the survival of humans and their livestock – just look to the Nabateans and how they dealt with very low rainfall in the Levant. In the summer when a temperature reaches 122 degrees (50 degree C) finding water resources and preserving food is of particular importance for Bedouins. Searching for grazing and water, Bedouins – nomadic people – move from one place to another with their sheep and goats far from major towns and roads. Dealing with scorching heat, desert nomads applied inherited skills and innovated the new ones.

Making whole animal cheese

Milk and dairy products are essential part of the Bedouin diet, and to prepare cheese Bedouins put milk into messah, a part of the stomach of a young lamb that has to be dried with salt. The cheese is called laban or labne and it’s still eaten widely today in the area. Messah is like rennet for the Bedouin.

“After it gets completely dried up a small part of it is taken and wrapped in clean sheep wool or a piece of textile. It is then put into a bowl of milk using the fingers for a few minutes, and then the milk will begin to coagulated,” said Professor Fawzi Abudanah to Green Prophet.

Abudanah is a professor of Archaeology at Al Hussein Bin Talal University in Maan (in southern Jordan) and as a child he experienced firsthand some of the Bedouin lifestyle. His family still kept and fed animals in the traditional way.

Keeping meat with cheese

The large textile bag in which jameed (hardened laban or labneh cheese) was kept is used for preservation of meat when cooked pieces are placed inside the bag. Due to a high concentration of salt in jameed (a hard dried laban made of ewe’s or goat’s milk) the meat can be protected from rotting for a few days.

For water cooling, Bedouins use either goat or sheep skin called qirbah, which is first cleaned and then tanned.

“Leather tanning is common among the Bedouins in southern Jordan,” the professor continued, adding that they get the necessary material for this process from the oak trees at Al Hisheh forest, northeast of Petra.

Hygiene is a serious problem for anyone who spent even two days camping, not to mention people who are outdoors for years. Running water, boilers, different kinds of soaps, refrigerators and freezers, skin creams and perfumes of well – known brands don’t exist in the wilderness.

Natural SunIn and hair rinse for weary nomads and travellers

To wash hair, Bedouins make use of a shrub called adhuo or the shnan in Arabic – latin name Anabasis Syriaca as an ash-based soap and the hair goes blond if the washing continues.

However, the shrub should be prepared first: “Shnan should be burned and its ash is then collected and soaked in a pail of water. The liquid is then used for hair washing,” Abudanah underlined, noting that to purify drinking water nomads use flour or alum.

When Bedouins collect water from depressions, ponds and springs a small amount of flour or alum are added to the water in a large basin, after a while the sand and impurities will sink on the bottom.

Barnooq is another shrub used as a color fixative when wool of sheep has to be dyed for the production of a rug by weaving.

Scorpion immunity for babies! Ancient vaccines in action

In order to boost the immunity of a new born babies, the father collects scorpions, burns and crushes them, and then mixes their charred remains with olive oil. After that the mixture of the olive oil and crushed scorpions are applied on the baby’s body, as Bedouins traditionally believe that it would protect a child against scorpion venom.

The practice is known in other cultures and among indigenous communities where tribesmen give small dose of poison to children in order to improve their immunity and the poison may develop antibodies against stings.

Closing herd wounds with stinging ants

When their animals, sheep, camels and goats have to be operated, a Bedouin treats possible cuts and wounds with desert ants (fire ants?) that are placed on the wound where the stitches would go. Ants stick to the skin and the herder removes their heads, while their body remains closing the wound until they dissolve naturally.

Slow cooking in the ground

Regarding specialty food dishes, they are prepared in so-called Zarb, and that underground cooking isn’t typical for Bedouins from the Wadi Rumm, for instance, but it has been practiced in places as far as New Zealand and the Balkans. It is an old method when food is put on coal and covered for two-three hours. Usually, chicken, goat or sheep meat are cut into equal pieces, marinated, and prepared with vegetables.

For Professor Abudanah, these hacks are part of his heritage and culture, however, some of these old school tricks are not anymore in use due to modernization, tools and new materials.

After all, a sugar scrub is only sugar, a good oil, and if you want, a natural fragrance like rosewater or a few drops of essential oil.

You can use just about any essential oil but please know that you must use ones that are safe and compatible for your skin. It’s worth reading this essential oils guide to make sure you are choosing the right oil for your skin. Skin is the body’s largest filter, the barrier that shields us from the outside environment. It makes sense to protect it for your health, and keep it supple and smooth for beauty. That’s where sugar helps. It exfoliates (gently rubs away dead skin cells and dirt) and leaves the skin moist and smooth. You can safely use a face and body sugar scrub once a week.

Here’s how you make a sugar scrub. It should take all of two minutes.

Ingredients: I cup sugar 1 cup good-quality oil For a body scrub: 2-3 drops essential oil or a tablespoon rosewater (optional, see notes below.) I wide-mouth glass jar for storage Mix the sugar and oil in the jar. Add the optional fragrance. Voilá. Store the sugar scrub, covered, in the refrigerator, up to two weeks or as long as the oil smells fresh.

Now that you have your sugar scrub, how do you use it?

That’s the luxurious part. Enter your shower and let warm water stream over you for 5 minutes, to soften and warm the skin. You can wash with soap in the usual way before applying the scrub. Take a small handful of sugar scrub into your palm and gently make circles with it on your skin, all over.

No need to scrub hard. It will feel wonderful. Take particular care with your hands and feet. Rinse off with warm, not hot, water. Pat yourself dry, leaving a film of moisture on your skin. And if you’ve made a batch of your own herbal moisturizer, this is the time to smooth it on. That’s it!

Notes:

• White sugar works well, but brown sugar melts more easily.
• Use any good oil: olive, almond, avocado and coconut are favorites.
• Perfuming the oil is optional, but a nice way to spoil yourself. I suggest essential oils of lavender, rose geranium or chamomile, which aren’t expensive and are known to be skin-friendly.  Or use rosewater: a drop of the concentrated, oily product or a tablespoon of the more watery kind. If you really want to splash out, essential oil of rose, jasmine or ylang-ylang are exquisite. Do not apply an essential oil to the skin unless you know that it’s mild and safe. Citrus oils are too rough to apply to the face, but work well for the feet.
• The safest fragrance for a facial scrub is rosewater. Essential oils, and certainly commercial fragrances, are too strong to apply next to the eyes. Use them for body and feet scrubs.
• You may halve the recipe quantity if you prefer to make a fresh scrub more often.

Caveats:

People with broken facial veins, sunburn, a rash or other skin irritation should not use a scrub. People with acne may scrub with plain brown sugar and warm water twice or even three times a week.

The floor of your shower will be slippery with the oil. Take the safety precaution of putting a small towel down on the shower floor for you to stand on.

If you shave your legs, shave on a day when you haven’t done a sugar scrub. Shaving just before or after a sugar scrub will feel prickly and irritated.

Before you decide to spend hundreds of dollars on skin care products and cosmetics, or even get off your couch and walk to the nearest pharmacy, there is a better way to save money with a natural product called Neem. Like black cumin which we love to talk about, Neem is another plant that is considered magical by some Asian countries. Neem comes from a plant called Azadirachta indica, also known as Nimtree, or Indian Lilac. Go au natural without parabens and preservatives in your creams.

Here are 10 ways Neem can work wonders on your skin:

1. Quick exfoliation. Add a  little honey to Neem powder and applied on the skin to exfoliate. This keeps your face clean and free from the dirt and grime off the street; use it as a paste or mask and gently scrub it off after ten minutes. Wash off with cold water and pat dry. Do this three times a week for a month for best results.

2. Detox with Neem. If you are fair-skinned, use Neem to create radiant skin. Boil Neem leaves drink half a cup of the juice to help fight microbes and bacteria, and free radicals too. Breaking down free radicals that prevent skin cancer.

3. An early morning snack.  “You are what you eat” says the old adage, so why not begin with an early morning ritual on an empty stomach, chewing a bunch of fresh Neem leaves? In doing so, the blood vessels are purified and natural detoxification happens. Infections are removed from within, which if left unchecked can burst out on the surface as eruptions, pimples, acne, eczema and other skin ailments.

4. Neem paste to treat scars and blemishes. Grind a cup of Neem leaves and add two teaspoons of turmeric and one teaspoon of lime and honey. Apply the paste on the face for twenty minutes, and do this twice a week. Gently rub the chin and the cheeks in circular motion, and the neck in vertical moves. Wash off with cold water;the antibacterial properties will heal blemishes and scars in no time.

5. Skin ulcers. Did you know that the paste of Neem leaves can help reduce the painful effects of skin ulcers? Scabies, eczema or psoriasis?  Use the paste of Neem to do away with blemishes the holistic way!

6. Aid bites and stings. The oil from Neem leaves and its seeds help act to relieve stings and bites, cuts and wounds, knicks and rashes too.

7. Eyebrow dandruff and lice. Sounds disgusting to think about it but some of us actually suffer from eyebrow dandruff and extra yuck, lice. If left untreated could leave a ghastly sight in years to come. A teaspoon of Neem paste can fix you up.

8. Neem wash. Suffering from chicken pox and worried about the scars? Worry not; grab a bottle of fresh Neem juice extracted from the leaves and mix it in a bucket of water. Wash your face five times a day and the scars may go away.

9. Shiny eyebrows and lashes. Neem leaf paste can help keep the eyebrows thick and the lashes thicker should you suffer from thinness. Apply once a day and a month from now you may notice a difference.

10. Remove dark circles around your eyes.  A teaspoon of Neem paste is all that you need. Chill the paste for an hour in the freezer, and apply it on your eyelids with a cucumber peel on each eye to help cool the zone. Remove in ten minutes and wash off with cold water.

With so many benefits from the Indian Lilac or Neem plant, we wonder why anyone would spend tons of money on chemical based products, when Mother Nature really has it all!

A new trend is sweeping across America: scores of people are ditching shampoo for more earth and hair-friendly alternatives – including nothing at all. But would this work in the Middle East? Would the lovely ladies of Lebanon ever give up their luscious shiny locks? Turns out, they wouldn’t have to. Check out five reasons to embrace “No poo.”

Before I proceed, full disclosure: I use shampoo (though I only buy the organic, paraben and sulfate-free variety), and probably to my own detriment. I have to wash my hair every second day or it looks like an oil rag. So the reasons I’m listing here come from other sources rather than from any personal experience.

Alternative methods for going “no poo” include dissolved baking soda with diluted vinegar,  or honey with various oils like coconut oil.

That said, here are five most common arguments listed for ditching shampoo:

1. Shampoo strips hair of natural oils: we haven’t always had commercial shampoo products, but now we think we can’t live without it. But we can, and if we did, our sebaceous glands that control how much oil our scalp produces would be a lot happier. Most shampoos are said to stunt natural oil production, which dries out our hair. Then our glands produce too much oil to compensate. Most people believe it takes anywhere from two to six weeks to break this cycle without shampoo.

2. Many shampoos contain nasty chemicals: last year the Environmental Working Group released a report that showed that 98 popular shampoo and cosmetic brands contain chemicals that are known carcinogens or neurotoxins. They claim that the concentrations present are insufficient to cause real harm, but is it really worth the risk?

3. Many shampoos contain silicone derivatives: Dimethicone is used to coat the hair, which is supposedly designed to make hair more manageable. Instead it contributes to further damage since it prevents moisture from reaching the hair, which then dries out. Also, Triclosan, an antibacterial agent, is said to affect hormone levels.

4. Plastic shampoo bottles pollute our environment: we don’t know about you, but we are so sick and tired of seeing plastic destroy our wild and beautiful places, killing both land and marine based animals. As people shampoo their hair more frequently than we ever have needed to in human history, we produce an extraordinary amount of waste that is particularly poorly treated in the MENA region. Not to mention chemical pollution, which most waste water management facilities are poorly equipped to handle.

5. Shampooing hair costs a lot of money: shampoos, especially the more decent brands, costs a lot of money. Considering that most proponents of No Poo recommend washing with baking soda and then rinsing with vinegar to restore the hair’s pH, keeping hair shiny and healthy need not eat into your monthly budget.

If you decide to experiment with a shampoo-free life, most people recommend washing your hair with baking soda, but there are other alternatives that may be more effective depending on hair types. Let us know how it goes.

Greenprophet: Tell us the basics. Where in Israel did you grow up? What scents, herbs and spices from Israel do you now like to work with? Tell us about your connection to the land and the people.

AYALA MORIEL: I grew up in Clil, a small organic village in the Western Galilee of Israel. There were always beautiful smells in the air and each season has its own unique scents that brought a rush of excitement for the upcoming season. I think the most powerful smells are in fall and spring though: the first rain, hitting the dry thirsty earth is unforgettable and a scent I always miss! Also, the first tangerines and guavas and the scent of the olives during harvest in the fall.

Winter brought the obscure smell of hail, smoking chimneys from the wood-stoves and fireplaces in the village, brewing sage tea with honey for winter colds, and wonderful citrus fruit like pomelo, and the occasional narcissus flowers found among the thorny bushes will perfume the air around it but smell quite repulsively indolic when approached…

Spring covered the meadows and mountains with wild flowers so fragrant I would get a headache from intoxication… The thorny Kida Seira in particular. And the citrus groves give off the heavenly orange flower perfume!

Summer is all about the beach and the salty Mediterranean sea. And sun, of course, which bakes the earth and releases the scent of the wild herbs and bushes on the mountains – cistus (from which labdanum is obtained), sage, wild mountain thyme and white mint, etc.). At nighttime the jasmine and honeysuckle bushes give off the most heady and poetic aromas…

I work with so many of the materials I grew up with and feel blessed to have “met” them early on in my life, and many of them are my most favorite aromatics to work with: labdanum (from cistus, aka rockrose), orange blossom, jasmine and sage.

GP: People often have a ‘signature’ scent, and yet for the most part are unaware of the potential hazards in their favorite fragrance. How do you go about educating them and encouraging them to spritz with only the eco-sexy and environmentally friendly scents?

AYALA: Scare tactics in marketing revolt me, so I don’t use these, ever. I always focus on the positive aspects of using nature’s scents, obtained from fragrant plants in the forms of tinctures, essential oils, absolutes, resinoids, balsams, etc.

Also through my educational programs (workshops, events such as tea parties, as well as trade shows and retail shows) I get to interact with people face to face, answer their questions, bust myths and educate about everything I know in relation to the olfactory world and natural aromatics, including some health and environmental issues.

GP: There’s a growing awareness of the importance of greening our personal lives. Some have called this philosophy eco-sexuality, while others say it’s not likely to make a real difference to the environmental with greater things like population growth being bigger challenges. How do you address the naysayers or disenfranchised?

AYALA: I believe it’s a learning curve for us as a society how to do the transition to sustainable, more healthful lifestyle that is better for us and the planet. It’s not going to happen overnight and every little action helps to make things better. There is so much misinformation about what’s truly environmentally safe and friendly and what is not. For example: what would be better – to use an endangered species and distill it’s natural essential oil, or to use a synthetic alternative? The answers to such questions are never simple. There are some synthetic materials that might be more environmentally friendly than naturals in the sense that they won’t hurt the environment as much.

GP: What do you love about your work!? And where can people in the Middle East find your products?

AYALA: Being a natural perfumer allows me creativity and freedom and brings me much pleasure on a daily basis. But even more so – being able to share my passion with people who appreciate natural perfumes, are aware of the sensory world and find as much meaning in perfume as one would in literature, theatre, a piece of art or a melody.

I’m most thankful for the people that I’ve met through the sense of smell – perfume opens people up to tell stories that they would have never otherwise told me and it is always fascinating to me to hear people’s stories related to the sense of smell. No two scents are perceived the same.
