At a time when climate anxiety can feel abstract and overwhelming, and being Jewish something people may need to hide in big cities, Adamah Los Angeles is trying something different: turning Jewish values into local climate action with dirt-under-the-fingernails practicality.

This spring, the Los Angeles-based branch of Adamah is inviting the Jewish community to engage climate work not as a distant political slogan, but as a lived spiritual and communal responsibility. Its newly opened LA Sustainability Fund is one of the clearest examples. Jewish nonprofits in the greater Los Angeles area can apply for grants of up to $20,000 to support energy-saving and sustainability projects, provided they are part of the Jewish Climate Leadership Coalition.

That’s real money for real change – the kind of funds that can help schools, synagogues, camps, and community spaces lower emissions and utility bills while becoming more resilient in a warming California.

The initiative arrives alongside LA Climate Week (April 12–16), where Adamah LA is organizing and promoting events rooted in regenerative gardening, volunteering, faith, and climate resilience. Rather than framing environmentalism as gloom and doom, Adamah leans into repair, ritual, and relationship the Jewish way.

This is very much Adamah’s broader model: blending Jewish learning, land connection, food, farming, climate literacy and spiritual renewal into one ecosystem. Even its seasonal offerings reflect that approach. For Passover, which is still ongoing, Adamah has released a sustainability-focused haggadah supplement that brings ecological reflection into the seder through Torah (the Bible), meditation, and climate questions.

There’s also a professional side to the movement so Jewish communal workers can attend “ReTreat Yourself!”, a no-cost June retreat at Camp Ramah in California, designed to strengthen both leadership and spiritual resilience in these hard times.

In a city known for its urban sprawl, wildfires, and climate vulnerability, Adamah LA is building something close to the ground: a Jewish climate culture that is local, networked, and rooted in action.

In Hebrew Adamah is the connection between adam (human) and adamah, the earth.

While Adamah LA has emerged as a strong Jewish climate organizer during LA Climate Week, the broader week also opens space for Christian and Indigenous leadership, two groups whose environmental work often runs deeper than branding or institutional visibility.

For many Christian communities in Los Angeles, climate action is increasingly framed as a matter of stewardship, justice, and care for creation. Churches, faith-based nonprofits, and Catholic organizers often use Climate Week to host conversations around energy, food systems, environmental racism, and resilience in vulnerable neighborhoods. Their language may differ from activist circles, but the mission is often the same: protecting life, land, and future generations.

Indigenous voices, meanwhile, bring something even more foundational. Rather than treating climate as a policy issue alone, Indigenous leaders tend to center land relationship, ancestral responsibility, water protection, and sacred ecology. Their presence in climate events can shift the conversation from sustainability as a technical fix to sustainability as a way of living in right relationship with the earth.

Together, Christian and Indigenous participants help expand LA Climate Week beyond panels and policy. They remind the city that climate action is not only scientific or political, it is also moral, spiritual, and deeply rooted in place.

If you know of other faith-based events happening during the week, drop them in the comments below.

OceanWell secures $11M in series A to build deep-sea water farms as a new approach to desalination, with less energy used, no waste

Desalinating water seems like the golden solution to a dry world. Israel does it. Saudi Arabia does it. Island communities are doing it. But desalination should be a last resort because it’s energy intensive and it has environmental coastal effects. The salty brine is devastating to animals and plants on the shore. Could a novel solution from the US mine water from deep in the sea, using the ocean pressure as the means to drive osmosis through desalination membrane cells?

OceanWell water farm visualization

OceanWell, a water technology company based in Los Angeles, announced $11 million in Series A funding this week to scale its modular deep-sea water farms and launch California’s water farm pilot with Las Virgenes Municipal Water District (LVMWD).

Related: harvesting energy from the waves

OceanWell is developing modular deep-sea water farms made up of pods that harness natural hydrostatic pressure at depths of 400 meters for reverse osmosis desalination. Each pod can produce up to one million gallons of fresh water daily, and the modular design allows for scalable projects based on demand.

Each pod requires 1.5MW to operate to pump water from the pod to the shore. And the salt water released from the process is not considered detrimental to the ocean floor.

This technology ensures ultra-clean water by filtering out salts, bacteria, viruses, pesticides, and PFAS, while its components are engineered for durability in harsh deep-sea environments. Unlike traditional desalination methods that are energy-intensive and threaten marine life, OceanWell’s technology reduces energy consumption by up to 40 percent, while protecting marine life and eliminating toxic brine disposal.

“Our goal is to provide utility-scale, reliable and sustainable freshwater solutions that can supply clean drinking water to communities across the globe,” said Robert Bergstrom, Founder and CEO of OceanWell. “We’re grateful to our investors whose collective expertise across water technology, manufacturing and infrastructure project development will be invaluable to our company, and particularly as we look to scale up operations in the coming months.”

Kubota Corporation, a century-old leader in water infrastructure manufacturing, the family office of Jon Hemingway of Carrix Ports, and Charles McGarraugh, former head of metals trading at Goldman Sachs, participated in the round.

There is a rising mismatch between clean water supply and demand – with experts projecting that 5 billion people could be without clean drinking water by 2050. The problem is driven by rising demand for water in key economic sectors like agriculture, industry and manufacturing and compounded by the effects of climate change such as drought and flooding.

How the pods work

Since 1970 water demand has increased by 1.7x, while global supply has dropped by 50 percent. OceanWell aims to provide affordable, abundant freshwater with its deep-sea pods, which produce 1 million gallons per day of potable water each. OceanWell’s first water farm is being developed in its home state, California.

Since its founding in 1890, the Osaka, Japan-based Kubota Group has been working to solve social issues through superior products, technologies, and services in the areas of food, water, and the environment. To address the globally worsening issue of water scarcity, Kubota has increased investment in cutting-edge water technologies. Japan is a large island in need of alternative freshwater solutions.

“One of Kubota’s goals is to provide comprehensive solutions for the entire ‘water circulation loop’ from water production and supply to wastewater treatment and reclamation. OceanWell’s innovative technology, which can provide a stable long-term supply of potable water to water utilities in water-scarce regions, is indispensable for achieving this goal,” said Eiji Yoshioka, Director and GM of the Water and Environment Infrastructure Consolidated Division of Kubota.

Los Angeles is the biggest city in California and the second-most populous city in the United States. Naturally, a city as diverse, dynamic, vast, mercurial, and frequently misunderstood as Los Angeles has many nicknames. It takes time to adjust to Los Angeles. For most individuals, it’s either love or hate. It can be not easy to know where to begin with all the glamor and splendor. Here are some of the most important things I learned from my trip to Los Angeles. This book will provide you with the necessary information to create the ideal Los Angeles itinerary.

Where to Stay in Los Angeles

With so many wonderful hotels in Los Angeles, it can be hard to choose. The Mediterranean climate of Southern California results in moderate winters, low humidity, and plenty of sunshine. Spring provides spectacular blossoms, fresh strawberry doughnuts, and sunny autumns lengthen the rosé and rooftop season. The expansive city is massive – it has a lot to offer, and there are virtually infinite places to stay. Where you visit will probably have a significant impact on your L.A. vacation.

Try an LA cafe for brunch

There are also a lot of Airbnbs and rental homes to choose from. The most significant suggestion is to choose the neighborhood where you ought to be or want to spend the most time to limit traveling and optimize vacationing and then select a lodging in that neighborhood.

If you plan on staying in Los Angeles for more than three or four days, we recommend staying in two or three different neighborhoods, and using a plan my route app to help you navigate the city efficiently. This way, you can make the most out of your time and see all the sights you want to see without getting lost or spending too much time in transit.

You may relax on the beach for a few days, get an adrenaline rush at the amusement parks for a few days, and then explore the city in Downtown L.A. or West Hollywood. With a slew of new lodging options, many of which are housed in ancient converted buildings, downtown is undoubtedly having a moment. Many of the hippest shops, such as Nomad and The Hoxton, are transplants from other trendy cities. The Ritz-Carlton is a high-end alternative. Award-winning restaurants, stadiums and stages, bars, and museums are all within walking distance in either case.

Try cycling by the sea in Santa Monica or Venice, LA

Santa Monica is the place to go if you want to be near the beach. It’s also on the west side of town, which means the reverse commute will make traveling around the city easier.

This coastal community is an attraction in and of itself, with a mix of celebrities, surfers, and hippies calling it home. While most visitors come to the beach, which is fantastic, there are many other things to do in the neighborhood.

New Things in LA for 2022

Since Los Angeles is such a big city, there will always be something fresh to do and see, be it a temporary exhibit at one of the city’s museums, a festival, a pop-up, or something completely different. The most significant development in Los Angeles is the construction boom. The Los Angeles skyline has already changed dramatically in recent years, with much more to come. This has resulted in a changing skyline, with the OUE Skyspace L.A. being the state’s tallest open-air observation facility. Public transit has also seen significant investment. Visitors to Los Angeles will essentially see this in construction on Metro lines and new stations during the next few years.

This is part of the Metro Vision 2028 Plan, which is a long-term development strategy for projects between now and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This includes a slew of infrastructural upgrades to give Angelenos and visitors more public transportation options, so they don’t have to rely on the freeway.

There are new museums in the future as well. On Miracle Mile, the long-awaited Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has finally opened. This $400 million renovation of a 1939 L.A. landmark has been in the works for a decade. The architecture is stunning, with a distinctive spherical structure and a 1,500-panel glass dome.

Although a road journey from other regions of California, Arizona, or Las Vegas is appealing, most guests arrive by plane, meaning your time in the Southland will likely begin and end at Los Angeles International Airport.

This glitzy glamor capital which is also the epicenter of the nation’s film and television industry inclusive of many electrifying attractions like Universal Studios Hollywood,Beverly Hills, Hollywood Walk of Fame and much more deserves your complete attention.

Saudi Prince Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah – the son of King Abdullah and deputy Foreign Minister – has sued the city of Los Angeles. In 2009 the King’s third son purchased a 5 1/4 acre plot of land in a wealthy Beverly Hills neighborhood for $12 million through his firm Tower Lane Properties.

But once the surrounding community caught wind of Abdullah’s 85,000 square foot plans (akin to constructing a giant Walmart in their neighborhood, they said), 1,000 residents signed a petition urging the city to ensure that appropriate environmental impact assessments are conducted prior to allowing the project to proceed.

Save Benedict Canyon from Saudi Prince

Although there are many massive developments in this elite southern California neighborhood, the group called Save Benedict Canyon claims that the Prince has proposed a plan that potentially compromises the beauty, safety and quality of life for other residents living in Benedict Canyon.

The group also accuses the Prince of flouting legal, land use, and environmental guidelines by providing inconclusive, vague plans to the city for a single use residence that is more likely to become a giant compound.

Abdullah shrunk the 85,000 square foot development plans by 25,000 square feet, but that has not satisfied the community, who set up a Facebook page to take on the wealthy Prince – a single father with three children.

Saudi Prince vs. Los Angeles

In the latest twist, the Prince’s US lawyers have filed a suit in the Los Angeles Superior Court claiming that he is being unfairly targeted and that there is no reason to conduct environmental impact assessments.

The Telegraph reports that the Prince said the city has a “mandatory duty” to issue permits for his palatial residence.

Nickie Miner, a member of the group and longtime resident of Benedict Canyon, said: “The prince appears intent on thumbing his nose at laws that apply to everyone else, as well as to him, in an attempt to build a mega-compound that will pose immense problems for our neighbourhood were he to circumvent his required full environmental review.”
