It runs on solar power. Batteries keep the power for cloudy days.

Reliable light matters in more places than ever. It matters on a back road after sunset, in a cabin with limited power, and at home during a storm outage. Research across sustainability guidance, preparedness resources, and off-grid living coverage points to one clear takeaway: people want lighting that works well, lasts longer, and creates less waste.

That shift helps explain why eco-friendly flashlights are getting more attention. They support two goals at once. They provide travelers and households with a reliable source of light and reduce the need for piles of disposable batteries. For people trying to live a little lighter or prepare a little better, that is a practical combination.

Why Off-Grid Travel Is Pushing Better Lighting Choices

Stedsans in the woods was an off-grid travel destination in Sweden where they offered food that tasted like Michelin-star meals.

Off-grid travel tends to expose weak gear fast. A flashlight that drains quickly, feels bulky, or depends on a constant stream of fresh batteries becomes a hassle. In that setting, simple design matters. So does efficiency.

That is why flashlights remain one of the most useful items in a travel kit. A good flashlight handles short tasks, longer nights, and unexpected situations without taking up much room. Green Prophet’s coverage of greener off-grid living has highlighted rechargeable lighting as part of a more thoughtful setup, especially for people who want dependable gear with a lighter footprint.

The eco-friendly case starts with power. Rechargeable flashlights cut down on battery waste and reduce the cycle of buying, storing, and tossing single-use cells. That makes travel easier in a practical sense, but it also supports a more responsible approach to gear. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that better battery management helps reduce waste, recover materials, and prevent pollution. For people who spend time outdoors, that is not a minor point. It connects a small buying choice to a larger environmental habit.

An off-grid choice for hunters, preppers, survivalists, and traveling in the back bush in case you get caught at night

Efficiency also helps in the field. LED-based lighting uses far less energy than older lighting technology and tends to last much longer. With a flashlight, that can mean fewer charges, less strain on backup power, and more confidence when an outlet is nowhere in sight. A traveler using a small power bank, solar charger, or compact generator benefits from every bit of saved energy.

There is also a comfort factor that often gets overlooked. Off-grid travel already asks people to think about water, power, weather, and storage. Lighting should reduce stress, not add to it. A dependable flashlight that charges easily and performs consistently can make a campsite, cabin, or vehicle setup feel more manageable.

Why Home Preparedness and Sustainability Work Well Together

An off-grid, regenerative roof garden than runs on batteries fueled by renewable energy

Preparedness has become less of a niche concern and more of a basic household habit. People do not need to live far from the grid to understand the value of backup light. Storms, outages, and other disruptions can happen almost anywhere, and they rarely arrive at a convenient time.

That is one reason flashlights still show up on official emergency supply lists. Ready.gov includes flashlights in its kit guidance, and Green Prophet’s own preparedness coverage points readers toward keeping one, or more than one, available. A dedicated flashlight is easier to rely on than a phone light during a longer outage. It keeps a phone battery free for calls, messages, alerts, and maps. It is also usually easier to aim, store, and hand to someone else in the house.

Eco-friendly models bring extra value here. A rechargeable flashlight is easier to keep in regular use, making it more likely to be ready when needed. It can live in a kitchen drawer, near the bed, in a closet, or in a car and be topped off as part of a simple routine. That is very different from the old pattern of finding a flashlight during an outage, only to discover the batteries are dead or missing.

There is a clutter benefit too. Households that rely on disposable batteries often end up managing extras, checking expiration dates, and throwing away old cells. Rechargeable options simplify that process. Fewer loose batteries, less waste, and a more predictable system all make preparedness easier to maintain.

This is where sustainability becomes practical, not abstract. Reducing battery waste is a meaningful goal, but it also makes daily life simpler. An item that supports both readiness and lower waste tends to earn a permanent spot in the home.

What to Look for in an Eco-Friendly Flashlight

Sustainable, re-charchable, LED flashlight

Not every flashlight marketed as eco-friendly will be the right fit. The best choice depends on how it will actually be used. For off-grid travel, portability matters. For home preparedness, ease of access and ease of charging may matter more. In either case, a few features stand out.

Rechargeable power is the obvious one. It cuts battery waste and makes the flashlight easier to maintain over time. LED performance is another strong sign of efficiency. Durability matters too. A product that lasts longer is usually the better environmental choice than one that needs early replacement.

Battery life should also match real use, not just marketing language. Some people need a flashlight for quick household checks. Others need one for longer periods outdoors or during outages. Brightness matters, but so does control. A flashlight that offers practical light levels without draining too fast tends to be more useful than one built only around maximum output.

The larger trend is simple. People want gear that fits everyday life, supports preparedness, and does not create unnecessary waste. Eco-friendly flashlights fit that need well. They are small enough to keep close, useful enough to rely on, and efficient enough to support a lower-waste routine.

A Smarter Light for Uncertain Moments

In Harmoni, an eco-house in Denmark that uses sustainable lighting

A flashlight may seem like a small purchase, but it does a lot of work when conditions are less than ideal. It helps on dark trails, in quiet camp setups, during power failures, and in the everyday moments when dependable light matters most.

That is what makes eco-friendly flashlights stand out. They offer the steady usefulness people expect, while reducing battery waste and supporting a more efficient way to prepare. For anyone building a better home kit or packing for time off-grid, flashlights remain one of the simplest upgrades with the most lasting value.

It may not be a question you ask yourself every day in the city, but if you venture north in countries like Canada where wild bears are a mythical creature to be revered and feared, it just may happen that you will be offered bear meat. My friend hunted a bear on my land in Northern Ontario and a number of my friends spoke about eating the wild meat. It was turned into a well-cooked roast and this was probably a good thing.

According to local media sources in Canada wild game, including bear and deer may be harboring a parasite in its muscle called trichinellosis. If the meat is not cooked well this parasite can spread to your muscles. There are some reported cases documented by the CDC, The Centers for Disease Control.

Human trichinellosis cases in the United States are rare and are usually acquired through consumption of wild game according to the CDC.

The Centers for Disease Control presented microscopic evidence of ‘encapsulated larvae in a black bear meat muscle.’ (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

Related: Caged bear in Saudi Arabia needs rescuing

They commented on cases of people in the US who had eaten wild black beat from Canada. Among eight people who shared a meal that included the meat of a black bear harvested in Canada and frozen for 45 days, 6 trichinellosis cases were identified. The meat was grilled with vegetables and served rare; two cases occurred in persons who ate only the vegetables. Freeze-resistant Trichinella nativa larvae were identified in remaining meat frozen for less than 15 weeks.

It is possible to eat wild game but it is important to know how to cook it. Cooking meat to an internal temperature of greater than 165°F (74°C) is necessary to kill Trichinella spp. parasites. Trichinella-infected meat can cross-contaminate other foods, and raw meat should be kept and prepared separate from other foods to prevent cross-contamination.

Emily Jenkins, a professor of veterinary microbiology who has done extensive research on zoonotic parasites including trichinella, said the disease “pops up every couple years associated with bear meat” and as recently as 2021, she told the CBC, a state-funded media source from Canada.

She says it often comes up with tourists because Indigenous people who harvest wild animals are aware the meat must be well cooked: “It’s often tourists, hunters coming from away who will take a souvenir home with them … so it’s fairly common that people who don’t have that protective knowledge are the ones who unfortunately become infected and that they’ve also shared the meat widely because it’s a delicacy, a gourmet thing,” Jenkins said.

“We’ve had massive outbreaks in France, for example, associated with bear meat from Canada, just because people didn’t necessarily have that protective knowledge.”

So if you are offered wild meat from beer, deer, moose or any other animal – make sure it is well done. Eating meat from the wild is essential for many people who live in Northern Ontario, where I have a home. A young buck harvested after a road kill a few days ago gave someone in my family about 40 pounds of meat. That helps take the pressure off of rising bills and is a natural way to live with the wild.

The local Bedouin knew about them for thousands of years but in the 1920s, pilots of the Royal Air Force flying over the deserts of Israel, Jordan and Egypt saw mysterious line shapes in the ground that they named “Desert Kites” Because their outlines, as seen from the air in their planes, reminded them of airborne kites.

The Middle Eastern deserts hide many traces from the dawn of mankind. Some of them are so-called desert kites, structures used to capture game animals: gazelles, wild asses, Arabian oryxes, onagers, hartebeests, ostriches and ibexes. From the satellite images, these structures look like gigantic kites that intrigued scholars who spent years researching uninhabited areas of Eastern Jordan, Sinai, Negev Desert and Saudi Arabia.

For many years scholars thought that some of the desert kites represented the border between the Roman and Sassanian empires in the Syrian Desert or water channels, but recently scientists reached a consensus that these structures served Neolithic nomads.

According to a French anthropologist Remy Crassard, it is possible that the “desert kites” in Jordan are some of the oldest in the world.

“Until now, we can estimate the use of the kites in Jordan and most probably in the neighboring regions to the end of the Neolithic, which was around 8000 years ago,” said Crassard in an interview for the Green Prophet. Crassard who leads the “Globalkites Project”, added that in northern Saudi Arabia, hunting traps were later constructed while in Armenia, where some 200 kites have been found, they appear to be used during the Bronze Age (around 5000 or 4000 years ago). By 2022, 6500 had been located in the Middle East.

The desert kites were found in areas far from the Middle East, like Kazakhstan where this human-made traps likely remained in use even in the medieval period.

Kites are different in shapes and sizes, the scholar continued, noting that thanks to a statistical approach, we are now able to propose groups of kites that show a real regionalization of them through time and space. Also, kites might have been used not only for the hunting of wild animals but for their domestication in the Neolithic communities.

In northeastern Syria deposits of animal bones found near desert kites indicated non-selective hunting of animals whose age and sex varies. Some petroglyphs also depict scenes from gazelle and ibex hunting. The most common types of desert traps are bag-shaped kites, star-shaped kites, star-shaped kites with returned enclosures and clover –leafed kites.

In addition to the function of the desert kites, they consist of long dry-stone walls converging on a neck which opens into a confined space that ancient people used as the killing floor. These walls can be hundreds of meters long and in more recent times, during the British and French mandate, pilots who flew over desert first spotted them in the1920s. T.E Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, recorded desert kites in the Negev in 1913 while he explored the area before World War I.

Regarding other finds, the excavations of the kites do not yield any artifacts, Crassard underlined, saying that the research team is also looking for datable elements, so that they can date the structure itself.

“During our last season of excavations in October 2019, we even found some prehistoric gazelles in one of these traps! After analyses, we will publish very soon our results in scientific journals,” Crassard noted.

Describing these enormous structures made to trap various animals by people from Neolithic period, he said that the research team recorded more than 6000 of them from Saudi Arabia to Uzbekistan in Central Asia.

“This is fascinating to study such mega-structures that were not so well understood before being excavated,” he stressed, underscoring that the new project will now provide many clarifications on the function, the dating and distribution of the desert kites that were until recently considered enigmatic structures.

In order to understand the economic and environmental impact of the desert kites, interdisciplinary studies are needed and they gather not only archaeologists but anthropologists, archaeozoologists and geo-archaeologists. The plan of the team of researchers gathered at The Globalkites is to analyze traps in different parts of the world and reconstruct the way game animals and Neolithic people interacted.

It’s easy for us to think of modern humans as the sole destroyers of all things living, but ancient humans also competed with other predators, using traps. This includes nomadic people from what is now Israel’s Negev Desert. A 5,000 year-old leopard trap, made from piles of stone, was just identified in Israel.

Researchers with the Geological Survey of Israel discovered no fewer than 50 leopard traps scattered throughout the desert. In just about each case, they were positioned near areas where sheep and goat were kept.

Once ancient nomadic people began to herd sheep and goat, they developed ingenious methods to curtail leopard and other predators, such as foxes, wolves, hyenas, and caracal, from snapping up their carefully-tended livestock.

Most surprisingly, the same kind of traps were used for thousands of years, suggesting that the design was passed on through the generations.

“The most exciting thing is the antiquity of these carnivore traps, which is totally unexpected,” geochronologist Naomi Porat told Live Science.

The leopard trap as seen from behind

A 1,600-year-old trap was unearthed besides the “nearly identical” 5,000 year old trap, which means predators have been a topic of conversation among desert dwellers in southern Israel for thousands of years.

“They look like a pile of stones, like a cairn, and you need a good eye and also some digging around to realize what it is,” Porat told Live Science.

A piece of meat on a piece of rope that is attached to a slab door lures the carnivore, which is then unable to escape the box trap.

This discovery was published in the September issue of the journal Antiquity based in the UK.

Today there are no more leopards left to hunt in the Negev desert. The last was seen one decade ago, and they are almost extinct in neighboring Jordan as well.

Egyptian bird hunters trap thousands of migratory birds in a variety of different ways.

Some set up a wall of nets along the Mediterranean Sea to capture the common quail, others set up “shade traps” on the ground, complete with an electronic bird call device that lures the birds in to their senseless death, while others set up nets in trees.

On their long and perilous journey south, migratory birds will seek out acacia trees for rest, but they’ll find hunters waiting for them instead, who will shoot at everything in site, according to The Guardian.

Bycatch, which refers to birds accidentally called up in the murderous fray, are rarely spared even though some pubescent, unenforced laws in Egypt require such caution. As such, scores of shrikes and warblers and other birds will also die unneccessarily.

The European Golden Oriole is particularly vulnerable as hunters seek them out as “natural viagra” for residents of Arab Gulf countries that need a little help in the bedroom.

At one tree at an oasis somewhere in Egypt, Jonathan Franzen, who visited the country last year to report on threats to migrants across the Mediterranean for National Geographic, watched as hunters massacred approximately 5,000 golden orioles.

These are then sold through middlemen to Gulf countries such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, although Baha el Din claims that .

All told, roughly 140 million birds will be killed in Egypt alone. Lebanon will exact a terrible toll on the migrating bird populations as well, as hunters often kill just for the blood and sport of it, and song birds will be captured in Cyprus and sold for a pickled dish that is considered a delicacy.

Franzen was so disturbed by the scale of unregulated killing in Egypt that he compared this bi-annual bird catch to fishing, a senseless sport that virtually nobody considers to be out of the ordinary.

This was the only way for him to come to terms with the mentality of the people who are responsible for this terrible tradition.

Yet the taste for the sport of tracking and shooting an animal has persisted, and in some countries, hunting is carefully regulated to maintain a sound balance between predator and prey.

Working with the local environmental agency, a new resort in the United Arab Emirates hopes to entice hunters to come and “kill for the pot” at their high end desert lodge near Al Ain. For a steep sum, they can hunt for deer and gazelle, which will be cooked by trained staff at the end of each day.

Throughout most of Middle East and North Africa, hunting regulations are so poorly enforced that men can shoot a bonnet full of birds or a wolf without any government reprisals.

We’ve seen this time and again in Lebanon, Kuwait and elsewhere. Hunting without careful oversight can lead to devastating losses – like the one million migratory song birds killed for a pickled dish in Cyprus.

Some argue that hunting should be banned altogether, while others claim that total bans are unrealistic and lead to poaching.

Most Green Prophet writers could not be persuaded to pick up a gun and shoot anything – especially not animals that are hanging on tenterhooks in the wild.

But there is clearly a market for hunting, and if we have to choose, we would prefer a regulated hunting environment that involves more than trophies for rich men’s walls.

This appears to be what Mourouj Hotel and Resorts will offer when their new boutique lodge opens in September, 2013. Although nothing about the development promises to be “green.”

Visitors will have their own private pool complete with jacuzzi and sauna in 15 “royal villas” in the water-strapped desert, for which they will pay a whopping $3,763 a night.

This price includes hunting excursions and the use of resort weapons.

While deer and gazelle will definitely be available between September and April each year, according to The National, there’s also a chance that hunters will be able to shoot birds.

“It will be prearranged hunting in coordination with the UAE Environment [Agency] and it will of course take into account safety and security,” Tarek Elsherif, the managing director of Mourouj Hotels and Resorts, told The National.

He added that they hope to attract customers who normally flock to Africa and Asia to spend all their money out in the desert instead.

Dubbed by locals as a “serial porcupine hunter,” Rami Fahmawhi has a longstanding track record of hunting porcupines, which are listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a protected species of least concern.

The Israel Nature and Parks Authority (INPA) first caught him with two full sacks full of quills and other Indian crested porcupine body parts, including pieces of stomach, in 2009, and he was soon indicted for the crime. But that didn’t stop the serial hunter from pursuing more of his prey.

Despite his 2009 brush with the law, Fahmawhi continued to hunt porcupines, although it is unknown how frequently he evaded the park authorities. Then in February this year he was again caught with at least one porcupine in his possession.

The Haifa District Court issued a $2,600 fine (NIS 10,000) but INPA was not satisfied that this sentence adequately punished the crime and so they appealed the judge’s decision.

The court accepted the appeal and Fahmawhi is expected to begin his prison sentence next month.

This is a major achievement in the struggle to preserve wildlife and in the struggle against criminals hunting and possessing protected wildlife without a permit,” according to a statement released by INPA.

The judges who overturned the fine, Shmuel Berliner, Igal Grill and Bracha Bar-Ziv, wrote that “The law defines both the terms ‘hunting’ and ‘confining’ as violations of the wild animal protection law. This is not a ‘minor’ infringement that does not justify applying the suspended sentence.”

Porcupine meat is a sought after commodity on the black market, where they sell for up to $200 each, and porcupines suffer a great deal when monogamous families are broken up by poachers.

Photo:Haaretz/Nir Kafri

Wildlife in Israel have always been under threat from economic over-development and hunting, including poaching by migrant farm workers. Illegal poaching and outdoor hunting in the country has now reached levels that could soon result in some animal species becoming extinct or unable to naturally sustain themselves in the wild. This revelation was reported in a recent weekend magazine article in Haaretz. Local Druze for instance are hunting porcupine to extinction.

A variety of wild mammals and birds are at risk, ranging from hoofed mammals such as gazelles and wild boar to smaller creatures such as hares (once plentiful but now scarce), partridges, and at least two species of porcupines.

In addition to the habitats of these animals being diminished by agriculture and housing construction, illegal poaching by hunters (many of them licensed) is becoming a problem that Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority are struggling to cope with.

The Nature and Parks Authority (NPA) is the body that sends out game rangers to patrol open areas where wildlife live. As reported in Haaretz, Dr. Yariv Malihi, wildlife ecologist for the NPA’s central district, made the following foreboding statement regarding the future for many kinds of wildlife – as well as for natural habitats themselves:

“Nature in Israel is fragile and hanging by a thread. It is under assault from every direction: infrastructure, development, activities in the field (including illegal hunting), and the desire of people to live. In recent years, this has been compounded by criminal hunting, which involves night pursuits with the use of projectors, indiscriminate shooting, and intimidation of the wild populations. The animals are in constant stress, and this has a critical influence on their ability to reproduce. This element of stress that hunters inject into their world can bring about the collapse of whole populations that are already at risk.”

The larger hoofed mammals which need more habitat and food supplies to survive are also being threatened by what is now their no. 1 predator : man. Gazelles are hunted illegally for their meat that is sold on the black market for high prices.

Porcupines, a large nocturnal member of the rodent family, are especially prized for their meat by Druze hunters.

Porcupines are often caught in traps baited with vegetables at the entrance to its burrow. If it can’t free itself, the animal is clubbed to death by the hunter, as shooting it damages the meat. Wilds birds, including doves and pigeons, are also hunted as their meat, along with ducks and partridges.

Of the 2,160 hunting licenses still issued each year, the NPA estimates that fewer than 500 people actually hunt for sport. Although many of these try to obey the laws and do not hunt illegally (I used to be one of them until I gave it up more than 12 years ago), many others may be poaching as selling wild game can be quite profitable. Although the law calls for heavy fines, few fines for poaching have ever been issued.

A new law is being considered in which hunting will be discontinued as a sport; only hunters who win permits by lottery will be permitted to hunt wild animals that are considered to be causing damage to crops and private gardens. The animal that falls mostly into this category is the wild boar, which has managed to coexist with humans although it doesn’t go near them, except to raid gardens and crops.

Changing the hunting laws may help protect endangered and stressed wild animal species, but NPA officials are worried that this could put further strain on the fragile “cultural ecology” that exists between Israeli Arabs, Druze and Jewish populations that live within close proximity to each other in the areas where game is hunted, as well as the country as a whole.

The Avian Influenza outbreak had at least one positive outcome in Egypt: it kept both local and migratory birds safe from hunters. But last year in December the government re-opened the country to what seems to be a permanent hunting season without any kind of regulatory oversight, leaving Maltese hunters and others free to conduct wild killing sprees that frequently result in the deaths of untold numbers of birds.

This video was released by the Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) to raise awareness of what one conservationist called “crazy fanatics” from Malta, who aren’t hunting as much as they’re slaughtering even endangered species.

Hope reversed?

Mindy Baha El Din, an American conservationist who married a renowned Egyptian Ornithologist, is a tireless activist for animal rights in Egypt. When Arwa interviewed her last year she expressed hope that the revolution would usher in an era of improved protection for the country’s precious biodiversity, but so far it seems that almost the opposite is taking place.

Although progress has been made in Hurghada, the scene of the country’s very first dolphin sanctuary, and Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) is taking to task restaurants that serve illegal sharks and other marine creatures, the lawlessness that has seeped into every aspect of Egyptian society has affected its wildlife as well.

A surge in hunting trips

After the government made bird hunting legal again, a host of tour companies have been offering “dream” duck hunting tours and other trips with “experienced hunters.”

Royal Dream Tours will take as few as one person on trips that last up to four days through Cairo, Fayoum, and Binyusef. They note in their online literature that everyday is good since “hunting season is open now.” Hunting trips with Wadi Tours last as many as seven days.

But Mindy’s husband Sherif told Egypt Independent earlier this year that it’s not possible to have a hunting season when there are no rules in place to guide hunters’ conduct. As a result, no one is available to mitigate the kind of free-for-all depicted in this video.

Pelicans, Spoonbills, Glossy Ibis, Egyptian Vultures and Osprey are among the birds massacred by jubilant Maltese Famers, along iwth Lanner Falcon and Bonelli’s Eagle, bringing to mind several other recent incidents including thousands of fruit bats gunned down in Lebanon and one million songbirds in Cyprus killed for a pickled dish.

Monitoring the massacre

In response to pleas from Egyptian conservationists, CABS has pledged to monitor the next hunting season. “We will monitor important rest areas around Lake Nasser for migrant birds on passage,” CABS spokesperson Axel Hirschfeld promised, adding that they “will work closely with local ornithologists and law enforcement agencies.”

Hopefully their presence will deter reckless hunters.

Falconry is a time-honored tradition in the Gulf, but like more recent sports such as race-car driving and rugby, it is a male-dominated sport. So when the Katara cultural village in Qatar recently announced the launch of the world’s first female falconry association, both men and women issued ridiculed the move.

Women and hunting don’t go together

HE Sheikh Joan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is hosting the 3rd Qatar International Falconry and Hunting celebrations at the Sabkha Marmi Sealine in Doha, Qatar. Festivities conclude tomorrow, but not without a controversial bang.

Today Katara formally announced the inauguration of the new all-women venture, which will include conferences and competitions designed at preserving the country’s falconry heritage.

But many people argue that women and hunting don’t go together and never have, Gulf News reports.

Women and falcons against tradition

“This is against our traditions, and engaging in this exclusively male sport will make people scoff at us,” a Facebook user wrote, quoted by Al Rayah – an Arabic daily in Qatar. “It is a waste of public funds and our women are going to behave like men,” said another.

These protests came in response to the idea that in order to engage in falconry, women would have to spend days in the desert (instead of the kitchen?)

Hessa Al Meftah, the head of public relations at the Qatar Foundation for the Protection of Women and Children, told the paper that creating a female falconry association is “laughable.” “It has always been known since time immemorial that falconry is for men only,” she told Al Rayah.

“Our grandmothers have been involved with men in almost everything, but history does not record a single case of a woman engaged in falconry,” she added.

Women have better things to do than falconry

Social activist Leena Al Dafie told the daily that women have better interests than falconry and that more time should be spent protecting Qatar’s society and traditions.

Our own Green Sheikh recently honored the United Arab Emirates’ former president Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan who loved falconry for the role it played in his country’s rich cultural history. Can this legacy – traced to ancient Bedouins who relied on the birds of prey to help them hunt – withstand the introduction of women?
