Sheep, goat, and buffalo milk create some of the world’s most flavorful cheeses. And if you are going an extra step and can find it, camel milk cheese might be one to try.

We tend to think of dairy as synonymous with cows, and it’s true that most commercial milk products start there. But cheeses made from the milk of other animals—sheep, goats, and water buffalo—are becoming increasingly common and often easier on digestion. Many people with mild lactose intolerance report they can tolerate these alternatives. If you’re curious about widening your cheese horizons, here’s a starter list of cheese made from non-cow milk.
True feta is never cow-based. This classic Greek cheese is traditionally made from sheep’s milk, or a blend of sheep and goat. It’s firm, salty, tangy, and ideal for salads or pastries like spanakopita. Authentic feta is usually sold in blocks, with a crumbly, dry texture full of little fissures. Cow-milk “feta-style” products exist, so check labels if you want the real deal. Here is a feta dish you can make worthy of a Michelin star.

Manchego

This is an iconic Spanish cheese comes exclusively from the milk of Manchega sheep raised in the La Mancha region. It ranges from semi-soft to firm depending on how long it’s aged. A buttery interior and a signature herringbone pattern on the rind signal authenticity, along with the official D.O. (Designation of Origin) marking. Curado (aged 3–6 months) is smooth, slightly sharp, and perfect on sandwiches or a tapas plate.

Buffalo Mozzarella

Making mozzarella

Mozzarella di bufala is produced from the milk of Italian water buffalo, especially in the provinces of Caserta and Salerno. Its creamy, silky texture is notoriously difficult to replicate with cow’s milk. Real buffalo mozzarella carries protected status in Italy. Counterfeits exist globally, but the authentic version has an unmistakable richness and delicate tang. Loads of TikTok videos suggest how easy it is to make. It’s not. But this salad, a caprese is easy to make after you’ve bought some mozzarella from the deli. Fresh mozzarrela should be floating in water, not hard in a bag like cheddar. The hard stuff will work for pizza but the fresh stuff is a million times tastier.

Labbaneh / Lebbene

Common across Israel and the Mediterranean, labbaneh, labne, or labaney is a soft, tangy yogurt-style cheese made largely from sheep’s milk (though goat versions exist). It’s often shaped into small balls and stored in olive oil, sometimes rolled in herbs like za’atar. It might taste “off” when you first try it but the tang of the cheese grows on your. Spread it on bread, serve with vegetables, or add it to a breakfast mezze. It’s so simple that many home cooks make their own. We take 2 parts labne, 1 part heavy youghurt with a quarter cup of olive oil and wrap it inside laffe bread. Yummy. Here is a recipe for labne here you make from yoghurt.

Humboldt Fog

Humboldt Fog cheese

Created by Cypress Grove in Northern California, Humboldt Fog is an American original made from goat’s milk. Its signature ash line running through the center helps it ripen from the outside inward. The result is a cheese that starts crumbly but becomes increasingly creamy over time, with gentle acidity and a more intense flavor near the rind. It’s excellent on a cheese board or melted over vegetables.

Halloumi

Halloumi cheese

Originating in Cyprus, halloumi is a mixture of sheep and goat milk. Its springy texture and high melting point make it ideal for grilling or frying—so much so that people often mistake grilled halloumi for chicken. Traditionally aged and unpasteurized, it’s now beloved throughout the Eastern Mediterranean and far beyond.

We even have an Amish friend in Ontario, Canada making her own halloumi and selling it in markets in Toronto. It’s texture is a delight and it’s best served fried or grilled. Our friend says that one avoids a strong goat cheese flavor when the goats are kept clean and no urine makes it into the cheese. Reminds us of the expensive cat poop coffee, or argan oil made from nuts that come from a goat’s butt.

Halloumi chews squeaky. Sort of like rubber sneakers in a newly painted mall parking lot floor. It’s kind of neat though, also a bit annoying.

Pecorino

Pecorino cheese

Pecorino simply means “sheep’s milk cheese” in Italian, and it’s a key member of the great Italian cheese families. Pecorino Romano is the version most commonly found outside Italy—salty, sharp, and a great substitute for parmesan. Other regional styles include Pecorino Sardo (Sardinia), Pecorino Siciliano (Sicily), and Pecorino di Filiano (Basilicata). All add depth to pastas, pizzas, and anything deserving a savory kick.

Tzfat Cheese

One of France’s most renowned blue cheeses, Roquefort is made from the milk of Lacaune sheep and aged in limestone caves. Legend says a shepherd abandoned his lunch—bread and fresh ewe’s cheese—to chase after a woman. Months later he returned to find the cheese transformed by blue-green mold into what we now call Roquefort. Its veins create a sharp, smoky tang that pairs beautifully with nuts, figs, or crusty bread.

We pulled up into a barren plot of land that stretched for miles. I, and the rest of my Onward friends in my Israel internship program were utterly confused. Where were we? I remember thinking. We were quite literally in the middle of nowhere, just miles of open, dry land, the land of Israel.

Once we got off the bus we were brought into a room with tables and a board where we learned what we were here for. Project Wadi Attir, is a sustainable development organization that aims to farm through Bedouin traditions in an eco way. Fostered by The Sustainability Laboratory, the goal of this project and the other projects is to integrate sustainable practices of agriculture.

The property is located in the north Negev desert and it desires to bring back original Bedouin traditions like folk medicine that have been long forgotten from the past. Traditional Bedouin culture were nomad Arabs who farmed the land in a sustainable way. This project brings back this method of farming so that farmland is better preserved and taken care of, and this was very clear as we were taken on our tour of the property.

They showed us around the 100-acre land and showed us some of the goats and sheep. The goats are milked by hand only and we even were able to hold one of the goats. They also served us some labneh, which was goat cheese they made on-site. You can make your own labneh with our recipe here.

Hold a goat

“This whole project is to take all the tradition and knowledge the Bedouins had for thousands of years in the desert and try to use it and bring it back with the most advanced technique and technology,” said Mohammed Alnabari, one of the founders of the project.

This project was also inspired to achieve a holistic approach back to a natural way of healing. Similarly to Tavlinsky and Cafe Levinsky crafting their ingredients on site, the project produces its own herbs, dairy products, and vegetables all made sustainably through an ancient Bedouin method of cultivation, and is supposed to provide a more natural way of living.

It is also hopeful to inspire other farmland to adopt this agricultural style in order to preserve the planet and support the Bedouin community and lifestyle. You can also buy their herbs and medicinal plants in the store they have on site.

Although it may seem like this place is all designed to be ancient and hand produced, there are solar fields on site that they use to generate electricity. In addition, the goat milking facility is one of the most advanced in Israel. Each goat has an ID bracelet, which tells them a lot of information like how much milk it yielded, how much time it milked, how old she is, and information on the milk cycle. “It can milk 48 items, goats or sheep at one time,” said Alnabari on the milking process. There are 100 goats and 100 sheep being milked right now on-site, giving about 3 liters of milk and being used to produce traditional Bedouin cheese.

What was so unique about my experience at Project Wadi Attir was that there were little kids there, learning, playing, and just experiencing the culture. When we arrived, the kids were staring at us like deer in the headlights. A group of modern, flashy young adults from America standing in front of tiny children that knew nothing of our lifestyles. I wasn’t able to speak to any of these children (mostly because they didn’t speak English), but it would be so interesting to know what they are thinking and get the perspective from their side.

The children that were at Project Wadi Attir

This Project not only builds a more sustainable Bedouin farm life, but also reestablishes a Bedouin tribe that brings people together from all over the world. As international relations is a complicated subject that is so heavily discussed in the Middle East, these projects are crucial in creating stronger bonds between people because it allows us to look each other in the eye and see different perspectives.

Seeing how other people live is the first step in forming peaceful relations and also grows our intellect just to see how other people live.

Whether you meet someone for the first or 100th time, you will want to leave a lasting impression. One of the best ways to do this is to ensure your skin is healthy and glowing. Since the first thing people see when they meet you is your face, it is crucial that it is blemish-free. There are several hygienic techniques, products and treatments that have shown to be very effective in reducing wrinkles, blackheads, age spots and acne scars. Below, you will discover exactly what these are so you can get started immediately improving your appearance.

UV Protection

The sunlight is extremely harsh on skin. Not only will the sunlight dry out your skin and make you look older, but also its UV rays will put you at risk of developing skin cancer. The best and only way to protect your skin is to utilize lotions and sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. These protects will keep your skin moist and protected from the harsh UV rays, even if you spend hours basking in the sun.

Routine Facial Massages

Massages offer an array of health benefits, including both mental and physical. While you enjoy having your body massaged, you should also consider getting a facial massage. The kneading and rubbing techniques will not only reduce tension wrinkles, but also increase the oxygen and blood flow to the face. The therapist will massage the soft lines around the eyes, brows and mouth, as well as the forehead. You will looking stunning and feel like a million bucks at the completion of the massage.

If you are living on a strict budget and cannot afford a professional massage, you should consider investing in the best face massage tool. Only a 10-minute massage will transform your tired, aging face into a beautiful, glowing and healthy appearance.

Considering The Water That You Are Using

Everyone automatically assumes that washing their face is something that is helping them in the long run. Of course, washing your face is much better than not washing it, but what you might not realize is that the water you are using to wash your face could actually be doing more harm than good. For instance, soft water is not really known for completely removing soap and other harmful agents from your face. If you live in an area where the water is soft, you need to make sure that you are taking advantage of facial cleansers. However, you also want to use the cleanser wisely, as these products could also dry out your skin and cause more damage. To avoid dryness caused by bar soaps, hydrate your skin using natural and safe goat soaps, which have organic ingredients.

If you live in an area where the water is hard, you have probably noticed that the soap doesn’t lather very easily. Unfortunately, this has probably prompted you to use more and more cleanser, which just completely dries your skin out. Taking advantage of gentle, non-soap formulas can be the perfect solution to this problem, as these products are designed to clean without lathering.

Be Cautious Of The Air Quality That You Are Exposed To

You probably already know that secondhand smoke and smoky environments can be extremely harmful to your health. However, what you might not know is that smoke can be devastating to the skin as well. Because it can cause your body to release free radicals that damage the skin and speed up the aging process.

Along with smoke, there are a variety of other indoor and outdoor pollutants that can damage your skin. Make sure you that you aren’t smoking, avoiding smoky areas, and constantly changing your heating and air filters regularly.

You also need to keep in mind that dry indoor air can be detrimental to you skin’s health, as well. Dry air not only dehydrates the skin, but it makes to lines more visible. A good humidifier can be the perfect answer to this problem, as it will put enough moisture back in the air.

And then produced milk.

Mr. Nasser Al Alwi paid about $820 for his billy goat at a livestock show in the United Arab Emirates. It has since been used to breed, and has not disappointed his proud owner, who says he wouldn’t sell this goat for 10 times as much as he is worth.

There did not appear to have been any warning that the billy goat would essentially become a hermaphrodite. In addition to retaining his reproductive organs, “or the parts that make him male,” says Al Alwi, he also started to produce ‘milk’ from two new udders.

Although he is confident that his billy goat is producing delicious milk, Mr. Al Alwi has chosen a cautious path and sent the milk for laboratory testing to ensure there’s nothing too freaky about it – before he considers allowing others to have a taste.

“We are waiting for the lab test results to make sure the milk is of good quality and fit for human consumption and whether it could be used for medicinal purposes,” he told The National.

Mr. Alwi may be hoping that he has found his miracle meal ticket, his path to unlimited wealth and freedom – a hermaphrodite who makes powerful babies and then feeds them, but men and women of science might have burst his bubble.

“He is producing something else – but it is not milk,” Veterinarian Dr Ulrich Wernery told The National. “It is impossible, absolutely impossible. Because it is a male that is why. There are female organs and then there are male organs.”

“From my opinion it is ridiculous.”
