Today, most large companies have established sustainability goals that they pursue both to mitigate their environmental impact and improve their public reputation. But if you want to see the full benefits, you’ll need to promote those goals – and your progress – effectively. This article will explain how to do it.

Why This Strategy Matters

Sustainability progress does not automatically translate into public awareness or brand value. Without thoughtful communication strategies, meaningful achievements can remain largely invisible to customers, partners, and stakeholders. That is why many companies increasingly view sustainability messaging as both a marketing and communications challenge.

In some cases, organizations bring in experienced marketing leadership, such as a fractional CMO, to help develop a structured strategy for promoting sustainability initiatives while maintaining credibility and transparency. When sustainability efforts are communicated thoughtfully, they can strengthen brand reputation, deepen customer trust, and differentiate a company in competitive markets.

Start With Real Substance Before Promotion

A CMO costs the bottom line, but if they are guided by sustainability goals, ESG and CSR they can set the pace before your next raise and talk the language your customers expect. A fractional position helps you scale without bleeding capital.

Before promoting sustainability progress, companies must ensure their initiatives are genuine and measurable. Today’s audiences are increasingly skeptical of vague environmental claims, particularly as awareness of “greenwashing” has grown. Effective sustainability communication begins with real actions. These may include measurable reductions in energy use, responsible sourcing policies, improved recycling programs, or investments in renewable energy.

Documenting progress carefully is essential. Metrics, timelines, and clearly defined goals provide the foundation for credible communication. When organizations can demonstrate specific improvements rather than general intentions, their messaging carries far greater weight.

Align Sustainability With the Brand Narrative

Sustainability messaging is most powerful when it aligns naturally with a company’s broader brand identity. Rather than presenting sustainability as a separate initiative, successful organizations integrate it into their overall story. For example, a manufacturing company might emphasize improvements in energy efficiency and material sourcing. A logistics firm might highlight efforts to reduce transportation emissions. A technology company may focus on energy-efficient infrastructure or responsible product design. The key is ensuring that sustainability initiatives feel authentic to the organization’s core mission.

Use Marketing Channels Strategically

Promoting sustainability progress requires more than a single press release or website update. Effective communication uses a range of marketing channels to reinforce the message consistently. Company websites often serve as the central hub for sustainability information. Dedicated sustainability pages, annual reports, and progress dashboards allow stakeholders to explore the details behind the company’s efforts.

Social media can amplify these messages by sharing updates, milestones, and behind-the-scenes insights into sustainability projects. Video content, infographics, and visual storytelling often perform especially well in this context. Email newsletters and blog content provide additional opportunities to explain the company’s initiatives in greater depth. Using multiple channels helps ensure the message reaches diverse audiences.

Make Data Understandable and Engaging

Sustainability progress often involves complex data, like carbon reduction metrics, waste diversion rates, supply chain certifications, and more. While these numbers are important, they must be presented in ways that audiences can easily understand. Clear visuals, simple explanations, and real-world examples help translate technical achievements into meaningful stories. For example, instead of only reporting a reduction in emissions, a company might explain what that reduction represents in practical terms, such as the equivalent of removing a certain number of vehicles from the road. Making data relatable helps audiences grasp the significance of the progress being made.

Leverage Public Relations Opportunities

Public relations plays a powerful role in amplifying sustainability messaging. Media coverage, industry publications, and speaking opportunities can significantly expand the reach of a company’s story. Journalists and trade publications are often interested in sustainability initiatives that demonstrate genuine innovation or measurable impact. Sharing detailed information about new programs, partnerships, or environmental milestones can attract valuable attention. Participation in industry panels, sustainability conferences, and professional events can further reinforce the company’s commitment.

Be Transparent About Challenges

One of the most effective ways to build credibility in sustainability communication is acknowledging that progress is rarely perfect. Companies that openly discuss both achievements and challenges tend to earn greater trust from their audiences. For example, if certain sustainability goals are still in development or require additional investment, explaining those realities can demonstrate honesty and commitment. Transparency also signals that the organization is engaged in a long-term effort rather than a short-term marketing campaign.

Turning Progress Into Reputation

Sustainability initiatives can deliver real environmental benefits, but they can also strengthen brand reputation when communicated effectively. Organizations that share their progress thoughtfully often gain recognition as responsible and forward-thinking leaders. The key is ensuring that communication reflects genuine achievements rather than marketing slogans. When sustainability messaging is grounded in real data, integrated into the brand story, and shared consistently through multiple channels, it becomes a powerful part of a company’s public identity. By combining meaningful action with thoughtful marketing and PR strategies, companies can ensure that their sustainability progress receives the attention it deserves.

Consulting giants EY, BCG, KPMG and Deloitte relied on the offsets, raising concerns about how corporate climate claims are being verified.

All the more reason to hire an in-house sustainability agent who understands carbon credits and sustainability. An investigation published today in the Wall Street Journal reveals that more than 140 corporations were allowed to claim carbon offsets credits from one of the world’s largest projects hosted by Verra in Brazil, despite the fact that the project was under investigation for claims regarding its legitimacy.

Related: Carbon capture technologies, markets and trends

Corporations such as BlackRock, Mastercard, and Phillip Morris International were allowed to retire and count these credits towards their emissions-reducing activities while the project was suspended. Evidence suggests that the project may have been illegitimate from its establishment, due to claims that it was located on public lands where it did not have a legal right to operate.

Additional research by Corporate Accountability released today reveals that over 70% of all carbon credits recently retired in Brazil are “problematic” and cannot be counted on to deliver their promised emissions reductions. If you are filing shareholder reports for ESG activities which include Brazil, dig deeper.

The researchers examined the top 50 carbon offset projects in Brazil between January 2024 and June 2025 — which are also among the largest projects globally — and found that millions of these problematic offsets were retired by multinational corporations and counted towards their emissions reductions despite not being likely to deliver.

“Carbon offsets have failed to lead to a decrease in global greenhouse gas emissions,” said Rachel Rose Jackson, Director of Climate Research and Policy at Corporate Accountability.

“Meanwhile, the claims of harm to communities and ecosystems caused by these projects continue to pile up. Yet again, the evidence suggests that those promoting and profiting off these projects cannot be counted on to help protect the planet. With life at stake, who is liable for the continued failures of these projects and the carbon market more broadly? And how many more times do we need to see evidence of their failure before we reorient towards more meaningful and proven solutions that reduce emissions and keep fossil fuels in the ground?”

The research in the new report from Corporate Accountability shows that 32 of the top 50 carbon offsets projects in Brazil are unlikely to reduce emissions. These projects retired 15.7 million carbon offsets credits between January 2024 and June 2025. This means that a substantial portion of the offsets from these projects that corporations were counting towards their emissions reductions were likely doing little to nothing to reduce emissions.

All of this while communities around the world face worsening floods, droughts, and extreme weather — as well as systemic violence fueled and enabled by some of the world’s largest corporate polluters in places like Palestine, Sudan, Venezuela, Iran and elsewhere.

Verra, the world’s largest carbon credit certifier, hosts 23 of the 32 problematic projects in Brazil, which accounts for 12.8 million carbon offsets credits retired between January 2024 and June 2025. Despite promises of reform amidst repeated integrity concerns, Verra appears to continue to host projects that are not proven to deliver real and lasting emissions reductions, says Corporate Accountability.

The Clean Development Mechanism hosts the remaining nine problematic projects, accounting for 2.9 million offsets retired during this period. The Clean Development Mechanism has a history of hosting projects that lack real emissions reductions and has been estimated to actually increase global emissions by 6.1 billion tons of carbon dioxide through approval of empty offsets, according to Corporate Accountability.

Corporate Accountability’s research also revealed that many major international corporations across sectors have retired offsets from these problematic Brazil-based projects. Petrobras retired nearly 200,000 credits from these problematic projects during the research period. Shell retired approximately 66,500 credits, and Equinor nearly 21,000. BlackRock retired 137,000 problematic credits from these projects.

Consulting firms also made significant use of these questionable offsets. EY retired nearly 179,000 credits from problematic Brazil projects. BCG retired around 90,000 credits. KPMG and Deloitte each retired around 5,500 credits. Other corporations using these problematic offsets include Barilla, Philip Morris, Uber, SWIFT, Mastercard, S&P Global, Engie, Yamaha Motor, and Dell.

The voluntary carbon market is predicted to grow significantly in coming years. Climate advocates, academics, communities, and experts are calling for immediate action to reverse the harms and failures of the carbon market, and to course-correct to real solutions that will put us on a proven pathway to Real Zero emissions.

Carlos Augusto Pantoja Ramos, a forestry engineer and PhD student at the Amazonian Institute of Family Agriculture at the Federal University of Pará in Brazil, has worked extensively with communities impacted by carbon offsets projects. He explained that it is not the communities near projects like Pacajaí that have benefitted from these projects.

“The attempt to capture public and common goods, such as land, by projects such as Pacajaí can intensify the concentration of income in the hands of a few corporations and institutional investors, deepening the severe social inequality in regions like the Amazon. This reveals disproportionate gain relationships between the parties involved, many of whom lack the structure and/or technical knowledge to assert their rights.”

At this year’s World Green Economy Summit 2025, Tech Mahindra’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Sandeep Chandna, is not mincing words. In an exclusive conversation with Green Prophet, he insists that sustainability has outgrown its role as a corporate side-project. Forget box-ticking ESG reports — Chandna says the future belongs to companies bold enough to treat sustainability as their core strategy for innovation, resilience, and survival.

Why does this matter? Because Tech Mahindra isn’t just talking the talk. It’s the first Indian company to win the Terra Carta Seal from King Charles III, ranked #2 globally for IT services on the S&P Dow Jones Sustainability Indices, and is already cutting emissions with AI-powered tools and a growing renewable energy footprint. Chandna reveals how putting a price on carbon inside the company — $12 a ton — is changing investment decisions, and how platforms like i.GreenFinance are pushing banks and institutions toward measurable green impact.

For those still treating ESG as a PR exercise, this is a warning shot. Chandna’s message is clear: sustainability is no longer optional. It’s the new operating system for business — one that could define winners and losers in the decade ahead.

Green Prophet: At the World Green Economy Summit 2025, what key message will you be delivering to global sustainability leaders?

Sandeep Chandna – Chief Sustainability Officer, Tech Mahindra:

At the World Green Economy Summit 2025, our core message will be clear: sustainability must shift from being a compliance checkbox to a strategic, purpose-driven imperative that powers innovation, resilience, and inclusive growth. We stand at a critical inflection point where ESG is no longer a reporting exercise, it is the blueprint for future-ready enterprises. We want to spotlight how digital transformation, when purposefully aligned with climate and social goals, can catalyze systemic change. Tech Mahindra’s journey, from pioneering green IT to launching AI-powered sustainability platforms, demonstrates that technology is an enabler and a force multiplier. We will also advocate for cross-sector collaboration, urging leaders to move beyond silos and co-create solutions that honor both planetary boundaries and human aspirations.

How does Tech Mahindra’s role as the only Indian company with the Terra Carta Seal influence your global positioning in sustainability?

Being awarded the Terra Carta Seal by His Majesty King Charles III is both an honor and a mandate. It places Tech Mahindra among a select cohort of global companies recognized for credible, science-aligned transition strategies. As the First Indian recipient, it amplifies our voice in international sustainability dialogues and affirms our leadership in climate-conscious innovation. The Seal validates our commitment to nature-positive solutions, from smart infrastructure to green software. It also strengthens our engagement with standards and frameworks like the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) 2021, Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), International Sustainability Standards Board’s (ISSB) IFRS S1 and S2 standards, Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR), International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC), Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol standards. More than recognition, it is a call to action: to lead with integrity, scale impact, and inspire others across industries and borders.

You’ve been ranked #1 in India and #2 globally in the S&P Dow Jones Sustainability Indices for IT services. How do you translate such rankings into tangible real-world impact?

These rankings are a testament to our rigor and transparency across ESG dimensions, but their true value lies in how we operationalize them. At Tech Mahindra, we have embedded sustainability into the DNA of our business. From reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by over 31% since 2016 to sourcing 31% renewable energy across owned campuses, our actions speak louder than metrics. We have achieved Zero Waste to Landfill certification at key locations and implemented ESG-aligned procurement protocols. These outcomes benefit the environment, enhance stakeholder trust, drive cost efficiencies, and position us as a preferred partner for purpose-driven customers.

Can you share a project or initiative where your sustainability strategy delivered measurable results for both the business and the environment?

One of our most impactful initiatives has been the transition to renewable energy across our campuses. Through strategic investments in solar infrastructure and green power purchase agreements, we have achieved a 31% renewable energy mix at owned locations and nearly 23% globally. This has led to a 31% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared to our 2016 baseline. Beyond environmental gains, the initiative has delivered tangible business benefits, lower operational costs, enhanced energy resilience, and stronger ESG credentials. Complementing this is our green mobility program, which promotes electric vehicle adoption and sustainable commuting, further reinforcing our commitment to climate-positive action.

With a goal of carbon neutrality by 2030 and net zero by 2035, what innovations or policies will be most critical in reaching these targets?

Achieving these ambitious milestones demands a holistic and forward-looking strategy. Our internal carbon pricing, currently set at $12 per metric ton, serves as a financial compass, guiding investments toward low-carbon alternatives. We are aggressively scaling renewable energy adoption, targeting 90% sourcing by 2030. Innovations such as AI-driven energy optimization, smart buildings, and digital twins are being deployed to enhance operational efficiency. Policy-wise, we are aligning with SBTi-approved Net Zero targets and embedding ESG criteria into procurement and vendor governance. These levers, technology, policy, and behavioral transformation are essential to decarbonizing our value chain while sustaining growth and competitiveness.

How is internal carbon pricing changing decision-making within Tech Mahindra?

Our internal carbon pricing mechanism has fundamentally reshaped how we evaluate investments and operational decisions. By assigning a tangible cost to carbon, $12 per metric ton, we have embedded climate risk into our financial modeling and strategic planning. This approach incentivizes low-carbon innovation, accelerates renewable energy adoption, and ensures that sustainability is a core consideration in everything from facility upgrades to supply chain choices. It is a cultural shift that reinforces our commitment to responsible growth and climate stewardship. It empowers teams to make decisions that are not only economically sound but environmentally aligned.

Could you elaborate on how platforms like i.Greenfinance are helping clients accelerate their own sustainability journeys?

AI platform for green finance

i.GreenFinance is a transformative platform that enables financial institutions to embed sustainability into their lending and investment decisions through automated ESG scoring with sector-specific KPI weighting. For instance, carbon emissions are prioritized in energy lending, while biodiversity and land-use practices take precedence in agriculture. These weights are fully adjustable to reflect regional requirements, regulatory frameworks, and institutional sustainability policies.

Built on an API-first architecture, the platform integrates seamlessly into existing Loan Origination Systems, enabling smart green loan underwriting where sustainability insights and ESG scores are embedded directly into credit decisioning workflows without disrupting core banking systems. Beyond origination, i.GreenFinance provides post-approval tracking of loan proceeds to ensure disbursed funds support their intended sustainable projects, from renewable energy deployment to green infrastructure upgrades. This delivers transparency and accountability for both lenders and borrowers.

The platform combines taxonomy mapping, feasibility reporting, and real-time analytics to provide comprehensive views of project viability and climate risk. These outputs are designed to support internal decision-making, helping lenders evaluate applications, monitor fund usage, and align portfolios with global sustainability standards.

With high configurability, i.GreenFinance adapts to each institution’s policies, product mix, and regional context. By making ESG performance sector-specific, customizable, auditable, and trackable across the loan lifecycle, the platform empowers institutions to move from intent to measurable impact, accelerating their journey toward responsible finance and net zero alignment.

What role will AI, IoT, and other emerging technologies play in driving sustainability transformations for global clients?

With the emergence of Generative AI, we’re solving sustainability’s most pressing challenges at unprecedented scale. i.GreenFinance exemplifies this innovation, delivering smart green loan underwriting, feasibility analysis, and real-time proceeds tracking that transforms how financial institutions approach sustainable lending.

Beyond finance, we’re tackling complex sustainability challenges using agentic AI across ESG reporting automation, dynamic materiality assessment, climate risk evaluation, supply chain assessments, and document intelligence. These solutions address a critical pain point for large enterprises, interoperability across multiple reporting regimes including CSRD, ISSB, SFDR, and regional taxonomies. Our platforms automatically harmonize data across frameworks, ensuring sustainability information is configurable, actionable, and audit ready.

IoT technology complements our AI capabilities by feeding real-time sensor data from assets, buildings, and infrastructure directly into our platforms. This integration enables continuous monitoring, predictive analytics, and early-warning systems for emissions tracking, energy efficiency optimization, and resource usage management—transforming raw operational data into actionable sustainability insights that drive immediate decision-making.

The convergence of AI and IoT creates intelligent sustainability ecosystems that provide 360-degree visibility into environmental performance. Organizations can now identify inefficiencies before they occur, optimize resource allocation in real-time, and demonstrate measurable progress toward sustainability goals with unprecedented precision.

Together, AI and IoT are redefining sustainability, making it smarter, faster, and measurable while empowering organizations to evolve from reactive compliance to proactive strategic foresight and value creation. This technological revolution enables businesses to anticipate risks, capitalize on opportunities, and accelerate their transformation toward sustainable operations.

Your first TNFD report integrates nature-related risks into corporate strategy. How will this shape future investments and operations?

Our TNFD-aligned disclosures mark a strategic evolution, from climate-centric reporting to nature-inclusive governance. By assessing dependencies on biodiversity, water, waste management and ecosystem services, we are embedding nature risk into investment decisions, site planning, and supply chain management. Future expansions will be evaluated for financial viability and ecological integrity. We are developing nature-positive KPIs and integrating them into our ESG dashboards, ensuring that regeneration is part of our strategy. Our proactive efforts to manage nature-related risks and seize opportunities reflect our dedication to creating long-term value for our stakeholders while safeguarding the environment. We understand that the journey towards sustainability is ongoing, and we are committed to continuously improving our practices and strategies to meet the evolving challenges of our global ecosystem. TNFD is helping us future-proof our business, align with planetary boundaries, and contribute meaningfully to global biodiversity goals.

Beyond corporate targets, what legacy do you hope Tech Mahindra’s sustainability strategy will leave for the industry and the planet?

We aspire to leave behind a legacy of transformation, where sustainability is a catalyst for systemic change. We want to demonstrate that purpose-driven technology can solve complex global challenges, from climate resilience to social equity. By embedding ESG into our core strategy, launching nature-positive platforms, and championing inclusive innovation, we aim to inspire a paradigm shift across industries. If we can help reframe sustainability as a source of value, trust, and regeneration, then our legacy will be one of leadership in building a better future for generations to come.

When Maurice Strong needed someone to represent business interests at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, he turned to Dr. Stephan Schmidheiny, a Swiss industrialist who had quietly built a reputation for addressing environmental challenges ahead of regulatory requirements. What emerged from that collaboration was the concept of “eco-efficiency,” a term that would reshape how companies think about environmental performance.

Stephan Schmidheiny’s approach to environmental issues was shaped by practical experience. As head of the Swiss Eternit Group, he made the decision to exit asbestos processing in 1981—years before regulatory pressure forced competitors to follow suit. This early experience in anticipating environmental challenges informed his later work on global sustainability frameworks.

The Road to Rio: Creating a Business Voice

The turning point came in 1990 when Maurice Strong, Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, appointed Schmidheiny as Principal Advisor for Business and Industry. Strong recognized that without meaningful business participation, the upcoming Earth Summit would lack the private sector engagement necessary for practical solutions.

Initially hesitant, Stephan Schmidheiny eventually accepted the role. “What I had seen from my own experience in how the debate on the environment was evolving in Switzerland was that our inability to engage constructively was becoming a fundamental challenge,” he later explained.

To address this challenge, Schmidheiny founded the Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD) in 1991. Within less than a year, he assembled 50 top executives from different industries and regions, including leaders from DuPont, Royal Dutch Shell, Dow Chemical, and other major corporations. By the first meeting in spring 1991 in The Hague, there were 48 members, though 35 attended the inaugural meeting. The council’s mission was to develop a business perspective on sustainable development for the Rio Summit.

The recruitment process required considerable effort. Schmidheiny famously flew from Zurich to New York via London on the Concorde to meet DuPont’s chairman Edgar Woolard, arriving within 24 hours of scheduling the meeting. This sense of urgency impressed Woolard, who agreed to participate and helped recruit other CEOs. “Every time he introduced me, he told that story of me dropping everything to get there the next day to meet him,” Schmidheiny later recalled. “I think he thought it was a funny story, but that it also demonstrated my commitment to the project and my respect for him.”

The Birth of Eco-Efficiency

The BCSD’s work culminated in the 1992 book “Changing Course: A Global Business Perspective on Development and the Environment,” which introduced the concept of eco-efficiency to the world. The book, translated into some 20 languages, presented a fundamental shift in thinking about environmental protection and economic growth.

Rather than viewing environmental protection as a cost center, Schmidheiny developed the concept of eco-efficiency, which demonstrated how enterprises could combine environmental protection with economic growth. The term “eco-efficiency” deliberately combined economics and ecology, with the prefix referring to both domains. This approach suggested that environmental improvements could drive economic benefits rather than hinder them, fundamentally challenging the traditional view that environmental protection was merely a cost of doing business.

On June 5, 1992, Dr. Stephan Schmidheiny presented these findings at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The presentation, made alongside about 28 council members, marked the formal introduction of eco-efficiency as a business concept, providing a framework that would influence corporate environmental strategies for decades.

Building Institutional Support

Following the Rio Summit, Schmidheiny continued developing the institutional framework for business engagement in sustainability. The BCSD evolved into the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) in 1995, following a merger with the World Industry Council on the Environment. The organization established its secretariat in Geneva and grew to represent over 200 companies globally.

The WBCSD became a platform for developing practical approaches to sustainability. Under Schmidheiny’s leadership, it produced research, case studies, and methodologies that helped companies implement eco-efficiency principles. The organization’s work influenced policy discussions and provided a business voice in international environmental negotiations.

In 2000, Schmidheiny was named honorary president of the WBCSD, recognizing his foundational role in creating the organization. His continued involvement ensured that the principles of eco-efficiency remained central to the council’s work.

Policy Influence and Academic Recognition

Stephan Schmidheiny’s work extended beyond business organizations to policy development. From 1997 to 1998, he served as Co-Chair of the OECD High Level Advisory Group on the Environment, working alongside Jonathan Lash of the World Resources Institute. The group’s report recommended that sustainable development become a general principle for OECD countries.

The advisory group’s work contributed to the OECD’s recognition of sustainable development as a priority, demonstrating how business concepts like eco-efficiency could influence policy frameworks. The report served as a foundation for discussions at the 1998 OECD Ministerial Meeting.

Universities recognized Schmidheiny’s contributions with honorary doctorates from Yale University, INCAE Business School in Costa Rica, Universidad Católica Andrés Bello in Venezuela, and Rollins College in Florida. These academic honors acknowledged his role in developing theoretical frameworks for sustainable business practices.

Continued Development of Ideas

Stephan Schmidheiny continued refining his ideas about sustainable business practices through subsequent publications. In 1996, he co-authored “Financing Change: The Financial Community, Eco-efficiency, and Sustainable Development” with Federico Zorraquín, examining how financial markets could evaluate environmental performance.

The 2002 book “Walking the Talk: The Business Case for Sustainable Development,” co-authored with Chad Holliday and Philip Watts, provided practical examples of how companies were implementing sustainable practices. The book demonstrated that eco-efficiency principles could be applied across industries and geographies.

Corporate Board Experience

Schmidheiny’s sustainability expertise was sought by major corporations. He served on the boards of UBS for 18 years, Nestlé for 15 years, and BBC Brown Boveri for 16 years. His board experience provided practical insights into how large corporations could integrate environmental considerations into business strategy.

At BBC Brown Boveri, he played a role in the merger with Sweden’s Asea to create ABB, demonstrating how environmental considerations could be integrated into major corporate transactions. His involvement with the Swiss watch industry through SMH (later Swatch Group) showed how traditional industries could adapt to changing environmental expectations.

Legacy and Current Relevance

Today, the concept of eco-efficiency developed by Dr. Stephan Schmidheiny remains relevant as companies face increasing pressure to address climate change and environmental degradation. The principle of creating economic value while reducing environmental impact has become standard practice in corporate sustainability.

The frameworks developed by the WBCSD continue to influence how companies measure and report environmental performance. The organization’s methodologies for calculating carbon footprints, water usage, and resource efficiency build on the theoretical foundations established by Schmidheiny’s early work.

Modern sustainability initiatives, from the UN Sustainable Development Goals to the Paris Climate Agreement, incorporate principles that trace back to the eco-efficiency concept. The idea that environmental protection and economic growth can be mutually reinforcing has become a cornerstone of sustainable development thinking.

Schmidheiny’s work demonstrated that business leaders could contribute to environmental solutions by developing practical frameworks for corporate action. His approach of combining economic and environmental considerations created a model that remains influential in contemporary sustainability efforts.

The evolution from a single concept introduced at the 1992 Rio Summit to a global framework for sustainable business practices illustrates the lasting impact of Schmidheiny’s contribution to environmental thinking. His work helped establish the foundation for how modern companies approach the relationship between business success and environmental responsibility.# Dr. Stephan Schmidheiny: The Swiss Entrepreneur Who Coined ‘Eco-Efficiency’ Before It Was Mainstream

In the annals of sustainability leadership, few figures have shaped the global conversation as fundamentally as Dr. Stephan Schmidheiny. Long before environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria became investment imperatives, and decades before “green business” entered the corporate lexicon, this Swiss industrialist was pioneering the theoretical framework that would define sustainable capitalism for generations.

The journey that led Schmidheiny to create the term “eco-efficiency” began with a profound realization in the late 1980s. As head of the Swiss Eternit Group, he made the prescient decision to exit asbestos processing in 1981—years before regulatory pressure would force competitors to follow suit. This early experience in anticipating environmental challenges would prove formative in his later work on global sustainability.

The social dimension of environmental, social, and governance practices in Saudi Arabia’s real estate sector has gained unprecedented significance as the Kingdom advances toward its Vision 2030 objectives. Dar Al Arkan Real Estate Development Company ESG initiatives demonstrate how strategic community development can drive meaningful social impact while supporting national transformation goals through inclusive, culturally sensitive urban planning.

Community-Centered Development and Social Infrastructure

Dar Al Arkan’s approach to social responsibility extends beyond traditional real estate development to encompass comprehensive community building that addresses diverse social needs. The company’s flagship Shams Ar Riyadh development exemplifies this philosophy, creating a “city within a city” that integrates residential, commercial, and social infrastructure to support thriving communities.

This five-million-square-meter development includes essential social amenities such as schools, healthcare facilities, mosques, and recreational spaces, creating an environment where families can build lasting connections while accessing critical services. The integration of cultural and religious facilities demonstrates the company’s commitment to preserving Saudi cultural values while embracing modern urban living.

The social impact of such developments extends beyond immediate residents to influence broader community dynamics, creating spaces where traditional Saudi values intersect with contemporary lifestyle expectations. This balance reflects the sophisticated understanding of social responsibility that underpins effective ESG implementation.

Workforce Development and Gender Inclusion Excellence

The social pillar of Dar Al Arkan Real Estate Development Company ESG strategy encompasses significant commitment to workforce development and gender inclusion. More than 30 percent of the company’s employees are women, substantially exceeding industry averages and demonstrating tangible support for Saudi Arabia’s women’s empowerment initiatives under Vision 2030.

This commitment to gender diversity reflects broader social transformation goals within the Kingdom, where increasing female workforce participation represents a critical component of economic diversification and social progress. The company’s employment practices demonstrate how private sector companies can contribute to national social objectives while building more inclusive organizational cultures.

The company’s emphasis on developing human capital extends to supporting Saudi nationals’ career advancement, with over 43 percent of employees being Saudi nationals. This focus on local talent development contributes to the Kingdom’s goal of reducing dependence on foreign workers while creating meaningful career opportunities for Saudi citizens.

Affordable Housing and Social Access Programs

A cornerstone of Dar Al Arkan’s social responsibility framework involves addressing housing accessibility across different income levels. As Chairman Yousef Al Shelash stated during the World Economic Forum in Davos, “the vision is there not only to facilitate for the developers and for the foreign investors, but also to facilitate affordable housing for most of the Saudi citizens.”

This commitment to affordable housing aligns with Vision 2030’s goal of increasing Saudi homeownership rates from current levels to 70 percent by 2030. The company’s diversified development approach addresses multiple market segments, from luxury offerings to affordable housing initiatives that support government homeownership goals.

The social impact of expanded housing access extends beyond individual families to influence broader community stability and social cohesion. By creating opportunities for homeownership across different economic levels, Dar Al Arkan contributes to building more inclusive communities where diverse socioeconomic groups can thrive.

Cultural Heritage Preservation and Community Identity

Truffle hunting in the deserts of Saudi Arabia

The preservation and celebration of Saudi cultural heritage represents a crucial aspect of Dar Al Arkan Real Estate Development Company ESG social initiatives. The company’s developments consistently integrate architectural elements and spatial arrangements that reflect Saudi cultural values while accommodating modern lifestyle preferences.

This cultural sensitivity is evident in projects like Buraidah Hills in Al-Qassim, which the company describes as “a residential community true to its Saudi roots.” By incorporating traditional design elements and cultural considerations into contemporary developments, Dar Al Arkan helps preserve cultural identity while supporting modernization goals.

The social value of cultural preservation extends beyond aesthetic considerations to encompass community identity and social cohesion. Developments that respect and celebrate local cultural heritage create stronger community bonds and contribute to social stability during periods of rapid change. The company’s approach to cultural integration reflects understanding that healthy communities require both modern conveniences and cultural continuity.

Stakeholder Engagement and Corporate Social Responsibility

Dar Al Arkan’s commitment to social responsibility encompasses active community engagement initiatives that foster social cohesion and civic participation. The company’s developments include communal spaces, recreational facilities, and cultural venues that encourage interaction and relationship-building among residents.

These spaces serve as platforms for social connection and community building, supporting the development of strong neighborhood networks that contribute to social stability and mutual support. The integration of parks, walking paths, and gathering spaces reflects understanding that healthy communities require opportunities for both formal and informal social interaction.

The company’s support of corporate social responsibility and its charity support program demonstrates commitment to being “a force for good in the development of the Kingdom.” This engagement with investors who value environmental, social, and governance metrics in their investment strategies positions Dar Al Arkan as a leader in responsible business practices.

Supporting National Social Transformation Goals

The alignment between Dar Al Arkan Real Estate Development Company ESG initiatives and Saudi Arabia’s broader social transformation goals demonstrates the company’s strategic contribution to national development. The Kingdom’s Vision 2030 emphasizes social progress through economic diversification, cultural preservation, and quality of life improvements—all areas where Dar Al Arkan’s developments make meaningful contributions.

The company’s approach to social responsibility extends to supporting government initiatives through partnerships and collaborative development projects. By working closely with government entities and aligning development strategies with national objectives, Dar Al Arkan amplifies the social impact of its projects while contributing to coordinated progress toward Vision 2030 goals.

As CEO Anand Raheja noted, “We are well positioned to support and contribute to Vision 2030’s objectives of diversifying the economy and increasing the Saudi home ownership rate. The real estate sector is a key element in delivering on Saudi’s aspirations and Dar Al Arkan is determined to play a leading role in helping to achieve these goals.”

Through its comprehensive approach to social responsibility, Dar Al Arkan demonstrates how real estate development can serve as a catalyst for positive social change, creating communities that support individual flourishing while contributing to national development goals.

Is it sustainable though?

Discover how sustainable investing and Green Forex can transform finance. Learn how ESG factors influence currency stability for a greener future.

Sustainable investing, which was once a niche concept, has now become a mainstream financial strategy. Today’s investors understand and value environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors more than ever, making them key considerations in allocating their assets. This change comes from two main factors: clients increasingly want their investments to align with their values, and there’s growing recognition that sustainable practices can lead to better long-term financial results.

What Are Sustainable Investing and Green Forex Strategies?

Sustainable investing means investing in companies that follow ethical and responsible practices, which helps them operate more environmentally and socially consciously. The fundamental purpose behind sustainable investing revolves around using financial resources to drive positive societal changes and benefits. Investors have various options, including buying shares in companies producing solar panels or biofuels or joining community loan funds.

The three main subheadings under sustainable investing represent various investment areas in this field.

Environmental investments evaluate companies’ management of non-renewable resources and their approach to climate issues and clean energy transitions.

The social component of sustainable investing examines initiatives that address human rights issues and diversity concerns. These topics cover both gender equality and support for underprivileged communities.

The governance element of sustainable investing evaluates companies that promote business ethics alongside trust, transparency, and marketplace compliance. These businesses prioritize ethical practices above all else while treating profits as a secondary goal within their organizational structure.

Sustainable investment has also influenced the forex market by creating “Green Forex.” This foreign exchange form is growing on MT4 trading platforms. Why? Investors now assess ESG factors when evaluating currency strength because countries with eco-friendly policies often experience improved currency stability.

According to an IISD publication by David Uzsoki, in 2036, nearly all global assets under management could incorporate ESG principles. Sustainable investing and Green Forex could play a pivotal role in the future of finance. Let’s find out more.

Invest in agriculture

The Rise of Sustainable Investing, Market Expansion, and Growth Trends

According to MSCI, ESG Investing began back in the 1960s. However, during that era, people invested in them as a political statement, with investors avoiding stocks linked with tobacco. Today, this concept has grown beyond political activism. It is now a values-based part of financial analysis. Investors see it as a complementary strategy with fewer “activist” connotations.

Sustainable investing has come a long way in its over six decades of existence. Grand View Research reports that the global ESG investing market was valued at USD 25.10 trillion in 2023. Europe dominates with 85% of sustainable funds, totaling USD 2.5 trillion in 2023. In the same report, the market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.8% from 2024 to 2030. The growth will stem from rising awareness and demand for value-aligned, sustainable investments.

ESG assets will keep rising as investors see their long-term potential. In 2023, sustainable funds returned 12.6%, outperforming traditional funds’ 8.6%. This outperformance spans equity and fixed-income assets. Therefore, sustainable investing is not just an ethical choice but a financially sound one.

Green Forex Strategies – A New Frontier

The forex market is the world’s largest financial market. Currency trade is based on economic, political, and social factors. Traders have traditionally focused on interest rates, inflation, and geopolitical tensions, which aid in predicting currency movements. However, this doesn’t seem so anymore, with the ESG wave reshaping forex trading.

Countries with strong ESG policies attract more foreign investment, boosting their currency value. Conversely, nations with poor sustainability may see weaker currencies. That said, here are case studies on how ESG impacts currency values;

The Euro and Green Energy policies: The EU implements green policies like the European Green Deal. This aims for carbon neutrality by 2050. These initiatives make the euro attractive to environmentally conscious investors. This way, the euro has stability.

Norway’s Sovereign Wealth Fund: Norway integrates ESG principles into its sovereign wealth fund management. They prioritize investments in sustainable industries. This strategy supports the Norwegian krone’s stability despite changes in oil prices.

Future Predictions and Emerging Trends

As the world advances towards a more sustainable future, ESG factors will play an essential role in financial investments such as forex markets.

Investors who incorporate ESG financial assets into their portfolios will likely have a competitive edge. Central banks may also set monetary policies based on ESG factors.

As green policies and ethical governance become the norm, here are key trends to anticipate:

Increase in ESG-oriented investments

Investments in renewable energy, particularly solar and wind

Redirecting financial resources to protect and manage natural ecosystems sustainably

Carbon trading and CO₂ footprint offsetting

Technological Advancements — Blockchain and AI enhancing ESG reporting transparency and efficiency

The world is looking back to the past to see what the future can bring.

The world is changing. There is no question about it. But everyone can attest that it’s not for the better.

Climate change is a real threat to humanity and probably one of the biggest problems we’re facing in the 21st century. The BBC reported that human-made climate change was responsible for 10 of the deadliest extreme weather phenomena in the last 20 years.

Citing data from the World Weather Attribution (WWA), the news outlet says that storms, heatwaves and floods in Europe, Africa and Asia claimed the lives of more than 570,000 people.

An Action Plan for Sustainability

Rising global temperatures, increased income inequality and geopolitical tensions are by-products of climate change.

The systematic disruption of the status quo is set to deepen unless consumers, governments and corporations band together to come up with actionable plans.

Strategic management consultant Dr. Oliver Eitelwein believes disruption is needed so we can reconsider what we thought to be fact and reshape how we interact with our environments. Dr Eitelwein’s statement points to one word: sustainability.

Business leaders have the power to enact change. In this article, we’ll discuss how corporations can increase their sustainability practices.

What Does Sustainability Mean to My Business?

ESG environment social governance investment business concept. Women use a computer to analyze ESG, surrounded by ESG icons .close to the computer screen in business investment strategy concept.

It’s not an easy question. But starting with the basics will help plan a roadmap.

Define what sustainability means for your business. Does it encompass social impact, environmental responsibility or economic endurance? Once you have the answers, incorporate them into your sustainable business strategy.

How Can My Business Actively Contribute to Conservation?

Partnering with NPOs and conservation warriors is the first step in committing to change. Collaboration work makes a positive impact on your business and communities.

This requires extensive research and ensuring your brand’s ethos aligns with your partner’s mission statement.

For example, if your company prides itself on sustainable packaging or recycled materials, it’s worth checking out initiatives that reduce plastic use in the environment.

This partnership ethos also applies to industrial waste streams. For instance, responsible management of IBC totes and steel drums diverts waste from landfills and conserves resources. For companies seeking such a solution, this is the operational standard that defines providers like Kelly Drums.

Right now, ocean conservation remains a passionate cause for many. However, the ocean plastic crisis is hindering much-needed research in discovering new species.

Merit researcher Dr Adrian Glover leads deep-sea exploration for the Natural History Museum. He says in some regions of the deep ocean, his team has calculated over 80% of the species they bring up as samples are discoveries.

The world’s oceans need projects and startups recovering trash so that scientists like Dr Glover can continue with their work.

“To see those places littered with plastic, to see people losing their income and way of life… it’s the driving force behind why we clean,” says 4ocean.

Are My Customers Willing to Pay More for Sustainable Products?

Bootstrapping in business, whether you run a startup or a brewery, means doing everything you can with your own hands and skills before you pay someone else to do it.

It’s a fine balancing act when integrating sustainable practices without compromising profit margins. You’re answerable to board members and shareholders where the bottom line is always increased revenue.

Maddyness says that assessing the economic value consumers place on a product or service is important. Yet, as business leaders, you must discern the financial implications of going green.

Eco-conscious consumer trends point to a willingness to make decisions with the environment in mind. Yet, the current economic climate is the difference between a higher price point and making sustainable choices.

How do I Measure My Sustainable Goals?

Business with a purpose has emerged in recent years as a marketable buzzword but at its core lies a spirit of aligning business goals with environmental and sustainability objectives.

Sustainability Magazine claims companies are continuously embracing business models that incorporate corporate social responsibility (CSR) and other sustainable practices into their metrics. Yet in doing so, some are greenwashing their mission statements to increase their green credentials.

Rose Stuckey Kirk, Chief CSR Officer at Verizon, tells the publication companies must maintain a firm grip on tracking goals set in their initiatives. Integrate analytics for each project and set goals aligned with your business strategy.

How Can I Use Technology to Advance Our Goals?

Sari Beeri from MIT uses AI to map city trees for urban planners and to assess the impact of climate change

The World Economic Forum describes businesses as the engines of innovation; harnessing emerging technologies to accelerate solutions.

Merging all lines of business towards sustainable management includes production and value chains.

Cloud-based digital technologies present a solid starting point and flexible integration of datasets. This solution can scale at the same pace as a company moves towards net zero.

Explore green IT innovations, blockchain for supply chain transparency or renewable energy sources to increase energy efficiency.

Humanity is in flux. We are standing at the precipice of inevitable change. One wrong move could mean all the hard work we’ve done until now will be null and void.

Corporations are capable of swaying opinions and leading the masses. Use that power to bring about change for the sole purpose of protecting this world for future generations.

Bitcoin mining—the process by which new bitcoins are entered into circulation—is notoriously energy-intensive. It requires powerful, specialized computers known as ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits) that are capable of handling immense computational tasks. These machines operate continuously and compete against each other to solve mathematical problems that become progressively more difficult over time. The energy consumption of these operations is substantial, often compared to the energy usage of entire countries.

The nature of Bitcoin mining is inherently energy-intensive. It requires powerful, specialized computers that are capable of handling immense computational tasks. These machines operate continuously and compete against each other to solve mathematical problems that become progressively more difficult over time. The energy consumption of these operations is substantial, often compared to the energy usage of entire countries.

One of the unavoidable byproducts of this massive computational effort is heat. A significant amount of heat is generated as these high-power devices run 24/7, leading to concerns about wasted energy and its environmental impact. The electricity used is another major factor, with the sourcing of this power becoming a critical point of discussion within the cryptocurrency community and beyond, as stakeholders seek more sustainable practices.

In an innovative twist, some enterprises are channeling the waste heat generated from Bitcoin mining to more productive uses. As Bitcoin mining operations generate substantial amounts of heat due to their intense computational requirements, this byproduct has traditionally been viewed as an inevitable, albeit problematic, consequence. However, a growing number of forward-thinking companies are now exploring ways to capture and utilize this excess heat, transforming it from a waste product into a valuable resource.

One such leader is Akbar Shamji, the founder and CEO of a privately held Canadian company whose operations are focused on the designing, building, and operating of ESG focused data centers. Shamji’s aim for the company is to both contribute to the sustainability of blockchain technology and lead by example in the movement towards greener digital infrastructures. Below, we explore how he and others in the blockchain industry are setting a standard for responsible practices in the digital currency landscape.

The energy demands of bitcoin mining

Bitcoin mining is an essential component of the cryptocurrency network, serving both to process transactions and to create new coins. This process is underpinned by a method known as “proof of work,” which requires participants, or “miners”, to solve complex cryptographic puzzles. The purpose of these puzzles is to secure the network and verify transactions, preventing issues like double-spending. Miners who successfully solve these puzzles are rewarded with newly minted bitcoins, incentivizing continuous operation and competition.

The requirement to solve these puzzles means that Bitcoin mining rigs—specialized computer systems—are constantly running high-power computations. This relentless demand for computational power translates directly into high energy consumption. Each puzzle solution requires miners to perform trillions of calculations, which in turn consume vast amounts of electricity. This has led to the installation of “mining farms,” locations with large numbers of mining rigs, often situated where electricity costs are lowest, sometimes regardless of the environmental impact of the energy sources.

The environmental concerns associated with Bitcoin mining are significant. The energy-intensive nature of mining often relies on non-renewable energy sources which contribute to carbon emissions and broader environmental degradation. In regions where coal or other fossil fuels are the primary energy sources, the environmental impacts are exacerbated.

This high energy use also strains local power grids and can lead to increased energy costs for local communities. As the value of Bitcoin increases, the incentive to mine intensifies, potentially leading to escalated energy use and an increased carbon footprint, posing substantial challenges to global efforts to combat climate change.

Transforming waste heat into a valuable resource

In the context of Bitcoin mining, waste heat refers to the thermal energy generated by mining rigs during their high-power computational operations. In the absence of effective heat management, this waste heat is often released into the environment, representing a missed opportunity for energy recovery and adding unnecessary strain on cooling systems. Efficiently capturing and repurposing this waste heat can significantly enhance the overall energy efficiency of Bitcoin mining operations and mitigate some of the environmental impacts associated with their energy-intensive nature.

In Norway, Akbar Shamji’s company has established a hydro-powered data center that features an innovative program for recycling its heat into greenhouses. This program captures the excess thermal energy from its Bitcoin mining operations and repurposes it to support agricultural activities, transforming waste heat into a valuable resource. The process starts with advanced heat recovery systems, like heat exchangers, which transfer thermal energy from the mining equipment to a water-based medium or air. This heated medium is then channeled to nearby greenhouses.

Once in the greenhouses, this recycled heat helps maintain an optimal temperature for growing crops, which is particularly valuable in colder climates where consistent warmth is essential for year-round production. By utilizing this waste heat, Shamji’s company not only reduces the dependency on traditional heating sources (typically powered by fossil fuels) but also lowers the energy costs for agricultural operations.

The program is a prime example of circular economy principles in action. By recycling the byproduct of Bitcoin mining—heat that would typically be released into the environment—Akbar Shamji’s company boosts the sustainability of its data centers and supports local agriculture. This clever reuse of waste heat improves both the efficiency and environmental impact of the mining operations while fostering a cooperative relationship between technology and agriculture.

The greater impact of innovative practices

Some server farms are buried deeo underground to offset carbon emissions created by air conditioning. Choose services that are moving in this direction

The use of waste heat from Bitcoin mining into agricultural practices opens up exciting prospects for the future of both sustainable agriculture and renewable energy usage. As more companies adopt similar innovative approaches, the potential to revolutionize agricultural heating practices becomes increasingly significant. This shift could lead to broader adoption of renewable energy sources and waste heat recovery systems, enhancing the overall sustainability of farming operations. By turning what was previously considered waste into a valuable resource, industries can contribute to a circular economy that reduces reliance on non-renewable energy sources and minimizes environmental impact.

These collaborations can foster innovation and inspire other sectors to reevaluate their waste products and byproducts. The successful integration of waste heat into greenhouse operations can serve as a blueprint for other industries, encouraging them to explore similar partnerships that could lead to sustainable practices and solutions. This shows that the path to greater sustainability is not limited to advancements within a single industry but can be significantly accelerated through cross-industry collaboration, leveraging diverse expertise and resources for a more sustainable future.

What’s more, the broader impacts of these developments extend beyond environmental benefits. By showcasing practical, scalable solutions for integrating renewable energy and waste heat recovery, these advancements can drive policy changes and encourage investment in green technologies. As businesses and governments recognize the economic and environmental advantages of these practices, we may see increased support for policies that promote sustainability and innovation. Ultimately, the continued evolution of these technologies has the potential to foster a more sustainable and resilient energy landscape, benefiting both agriculture and the broader economy.

According to Akbar Shamji, his company’s core focus is to innovate in the blockchain space while building ESG focused data centers. As the world grapples with issues like climate change, resource depletion, and environmental degradation, the need for creative and effective strategies such as these has never been more urgent. Technologies that repurpose waste, enhance energy efficiency, or reduce carbon footprints are not just beneficial; they are essential for the long-term health of our planet.

Know the difference.

Modern consumers are increasingly conscious of the social and environmental impacts of the products and services they purchase, preferring to do business with companies that show ethical practices, and that they are committed to positive social and environmental impacts. In a 2020 survey of consumer sentiment in the United States, over 60 percent of respondents said that they would be willing to pay more for a product with sustainable packaging. Another recent study conducted by NielsenIQ found that 78 percent of U.S. consumers say that a sustainable lifestyle is important to them.

Industrialism has led to incredible advancements that make modern life what it is today. However, it’s becoming evident that our business practices have impacts beyond just profits, affecting our planet and society. This realization means it’s crucial for both big and small companies to reassess their operations with sustainability in mind. Despite this, the growing demand for sustainable businesses has led some companies to engage in “greenwashing,” an unethical practice that involves making false or baseless claims about being environmentally friendly, exploiting the benefits of a green image without genuine action.

According to Dudley Gann, founder of the green consulting firm EcoVision Solutions, he often encounters clients who have a desire to incorporate more sustainable practices into their business, but fear that if they do not tackle every single minute aspect of eco-friendly practices they will be accused of greenwashing.

“Many of my clients share a common fear—they worry that any effort towards sustainability that isn’t perfect will be seen as greenwashing,” said Gann. “But the journey to becoming more sustainable doesn’t require immediate perfection. Needing time to adjust resources and introduce new practices isn’t dishonest—it’s a part of the process. The key to genuinely integrating sustainable solutions into a business is to enhance transparency. Being open about where you are in your sustainability journey helps build trust and shows a commitment to real change.”

Before founding his consulting firm, Gann spent over two decades working in green technology. His business EcoVision Solutions offers guidance to businesses seeking to adopt more environmentally friendly practices, providing customized solutions that align with their specific environmental goals. He regularly contributes to various blogs and publications, focusing on sustainable business practices, and has additionally spoken at several conferences on the subject.

The concept of greenwashing

It’s crucial to define what greenwashing is and what it isn’t. Greenwashing occurs when companies falsely claim to be environmentally friendly or socially responsible without evidence to support these claims.

Unfortunately, the growing popularity of sustainability and green initiatives among stakeholders is fueling greenwashing. As consumers and investors increasingly prefer companies committed to responsible and sustainable practices, some businesses may resort to greenwashing as a shortcut to attract this eco-conscious market, despite lacking genuine sustainable actions.

“Greenwashing will usually involve focusing on short-term, convenient, superficial issues rather than addressing long-term challenges that would truly benefit society and the environment,” said Dudley Gann. “Leaders who go down this path might not see the double whammy they’re setting up for their company. Not only are they missing the mark on addressing real issues, but they’re also flirting with a major reputational hit and a trust meltdown if their dishonesty comes to light.”

Greenwashing often shows up as a lack of evidence or third-party validation for eco-friendly claims. It might involve using broad terms like ‘environmentally friendly’ without offering specifics, ignoring the company’s less sustainable practices, making green claims irrelevant to the product or company, or simply stating claims that are outright false. In 2021, the European Commission and National Consumer Authorities conducted an investigation of online marketplaces for signs of greenwashing. They found that 42 percent of the environmental claims they reviewed were exaggerated, false, or misleading.

Some companies engaged in greenwashing focus their marketing efforts on promoting the eco-friendly aspects of their business, ignoring the parts that are not environmentally friendly. Meanwhile, other companies resort to outright lies, intentionally deceiving customers and regulators with false information. However, being accused of greenwashing doesn’t always imply bad intentions. Sometimes, it may simply be due to poor communication. Vague environmental claims that lack clear, verified data can seem dishonest, even if there is some truth to them. In other cases, companies might set overly ambitious sustainability goals that they ultimately fail to achieve, not because they didn’t want to, but because the goals were too challenging to meet.

“Greenwashing does not apply to companies that are genuinely working towards sustainability, even if they are just beginning to put these practices into place,” Gann said.

The far-reaching impact of greenwashing

As previously discussed, greenwashing can significantly undermine consumer trust and loyalty. This breach not only damages the brand-consumer relationship, but also reduces customer loyalty. Additionally, a pervasive culture of greenwashing breeds skepticism among consumers towards all environmental claims, making it difficult for companies genuinely committed to sustainability to gain recognition and trust.

The environmental and social consequences of greenwashing are equally concerning. It misleads the public about what environmental issues should be prioritized, diverting attention from urgent problems that require immediate action. This shift can stifle true innovation in sustainable technologies and practices because companies may opt to spend more on marketing their products as “green” rather than investing in genuine environmental improvements. Furthermore, greenwashing could unintentionally result in weaker environmental rules and policies. When it’s hard to tell apart real sustainability actions from greenwashing, policymakers might end up setting less strict rules, not fully tackling the biggest environmental issues.

“The impact of greenwashing extends way beyond the immediate effects on consumer behavior. It creates serious difficulties for environmental sustainability and social equity. Addressing greenwashing is essential for fostering a more honest, more responsible, genuinely sustainable future,” Gann said.

According to Dudley Gann, in order to avoid greenwashing companies need to deeply integrate sustainability into their core mission and values. This involves making environmental responsibility a fundamental aspect of the business model itself, rather than an afterthought or a marketing strategy. Here’s how to do it:

Embed sustainability in the mission: Make sustainability a central component of the company’s mission statement. This ensures that all stakeholders, from employees to investors, understand that environmental responsibility is a key priority.

Incorporate it into the business model: Design the company’s operations, products, and services around sustainable practices. This could mean opting for eco-friendly materials, investing in renewable energy, or developing products that have a smaller environmental footprint.

Set clear sustainability metrics: Establish specific, measurable goals for sustainability efforts, such as reducing carbon emissions, minimizing waste, or increasing the use of renewable resources. Use these metrics to track progress and make adjustments as needed.

Hold everyone accountable: Implement standards for sustainability that apply to everyone in the company, from the CEO to entry-level employees. Encourage a culture where sustainability is everyone’s responsibility, and where individuals and teams are held accountable for meeting environmental goals.

Continuous education and training: Educate employees about the importance of sustainability and train them in specific practices that can help achieve the company’s environmental goals. This can help ensure that everyone is equipped to contribute to the sustainability mission.

Transparent reporting: Regularly report on the company’s sustainability efforts and progress towards its goals. Being open about both successes and areas for improvement can help build trust with consumers, investors, and other stakeholders.

Engage with stakeholders: Listen to customers, employees, and partners about their views on sustainability and how the company can improve its practices. Engaging with stakeholders can provide valuable insights and demonstrate a genuine commitment to environmental responsibility.

“Getting to sustainability isn’t about nailing it perfectly right out of the gate. It’s more about being open and honest, taking small steps to get better over time. When a company really makes sustainability part of its DNA—like, it’s in everything they do, from their big mission down to the nitty-gritty daily stuff—that’s when they start to make a real splash,” Gann said.
