Short-term surges in air pollution in New Jersey from the 2023 Canadian wildfires were associated with a higher stroke rate and more serious strokes, according to a preliminary study released March 3, 2026, that will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s 78th Annual Meeting next month.

“Wildfire smoke contains pollutants like ozone and particulate matter, so it is more than a nuisance, it can be a public health hazard,” said study author Elizabeth Cerceo, MD, of Cooper Medical School of Rowan University in Camden, New Jersey. “The 2023 Canadian wildfires resulted in unprecedented declines in air quality across the northeastern United States. Our findings show that short-term exposure to elevated air pollution from these wildfires was associated with a higher incidence and severity of stroke.”

Related: smoking and strokes

For the study, researchers used a stroke registry to identify all cases of stroke that occurred during June and July 2023 and during the same months a year earlier. Ischemic strokes are the most common kind of stroke. Bleeding strokes are more severe and often more fatal.

Researchers reviewed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data for both periods from air quality monitors located in Camden, New Jersey. They calculated average daily exposures for ozone which, when inhaled, can cause shortness of breath, coughing and aggravation of conditions like asthma. They also calculated daily average exposures for fine particulate matter, also called PM2.5, which is air pollution with particles that are 2.5 micrometers in diameter or less.

Ozone levels peaked at 136 parts per billion (ppb) during the wildfires in 2023 compared to median ozone concentration of 36 ppb. Particulate matter reached 211 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) compared to median concentration of 48.5 µg/m³.

Daily air quality data was matched with the timing of each stroke. Because pollution effects may take a few days to impact the body, researchers also took into account the levels from the preceding one to two days before participants had their stroke.

For ozone levels, 72% of the days were 50 ppb or less, with 28% of the days above the recommended level. The World Health Organization guideline for ozone is 50 ppb. Researchers compared 42 strokes that occurred on above average ozone days, with 80 strokes that occurred on below average days. For strokes that occurred on above average ozone days, the incidence of stroke, or the rate at which new stroke cases occurred, was 1.25 strokes per day compared to 0.93 strokes per day that occurred on below average days.

After adjusting for factors like age, sex, race, and cause of stroke, researchers found higher average ozone days were associated with a 0.32 higher incidence of stroke per day.

They also found for strokes on above average ozone days, there was a higher proportion of bleeding strokes and more large artery atherosclerosis, plaque buildup in major arteries.

For particulate matter levels, 38% of the days were above average days and 62% were below average days. Researchers compared 39 strokes that occurred on above average particulate matter days to 83 strokes that occurred on below average days. They found above average particulate matter was associated with longer hospital stays and higher scores on a scale measuring stroke severity.

“While longer-term air pollution has been recognized as a risk factor for stroke, less is known about short exposures to wildfire smoke,” said Cerceo. “Our study addresses a critical gap by providing more information about the neurological impact of wildfire smoke. Our findings can help guide stroke prevention and underscore the need for public health interventions during wildfires.”

When I first studied forestry at the University of Toronto with Professor Sandy Smith, I didn’t realize how deeply the school’s ecological roots would shape the way I look at the world. The University of Toronto has always been, at its core, an environmental university. from its forestry program and plant biology labs to courses in sustainable cities.

So it’s not surprising that one of Canada’s emerging cleantech companies tackling plastic pollution also began there. Meet erthos, a Toronto-area startup developing plant-based materials designed to replace traditional petroleum plastics and help move the global economy toward a circular model.

The company began as a student project at the University of Toronto, where the founders started exploring alternatives to plastic while studying subjects ranging from environmental economics to plant biology. Their early work focused on whether agricultural byproducts and plant-derived ingredients could replicate the performance of conventional plastics, without leaving behind the same environmental legacy.

What began as a campus sustainability idea has since grown into a cleantech company that uses AI to design bio-based resins that can replace common plastics such as polypropylene or polystyrene, while still working within existing manufacturing systems. One of their recent talks was with Colgate-Palmolive.

erthos works with Budweiser for a plastic cap solution

That compatibility with industry matters. One of the biggest barriers to replacing plastics is the massive infrastructure already built around them. Factories, molds, and production lines are designed for petroleum-based materials. If a sustainable material requires entirely new manufacturing systems, adoption slows dramatically. We see that working with big brands isn’t enough. The pineapple textiles and leather company Pinatex, which uses pineapple waste, emerged to great fanfare and worked with brands like Stella McCartney, but one-off and non-committal marketing opportunity can’t build a business. We need more commitment and responsibility taken by brands such as Colgate-Palmolive, H&M, and all ranges of food and plastics industries.

Sustainable fashion by Stella McCartney.
Can erthos help? It focuses on designing materials that can fit into the systems companies already use, making it easier for brands to transition away from fossil-fuel plastics without rebuilding their supply chains. Getting a product to fit into existing moulds and machines is the key for change from plastics to bio-plastics.

The company combines biomaterials science with advanced data tools, they say, to design plant-based formulations made from renewable ingredients such as plant fibers, starches, and oils. By using AI to test and refine formulations quickly, the goal is to create materials that match the durability and functionality of traditional plastics while reducing environmental impact. See Tipa, a brand that works.

The stakes are enormous. Hundreds of millions of tonnes of plastic are produced globally each year, and only a small portion is recycled. The rest accumulates in landfills, waterways, and ecosystems where it can persist for centuries. Worse even, bits of plastics called microplastics are getting into our lungs, our waterways, our food, our brains.

Startups like erthos are trying to change that equation by addressing plastic at its source, replacing the material itself rather than simply managing the waste it creates.

Today the company works with brands exploring alternatives for packaging, consumer products, and other plastic-heavy industries, helping design materials that can be recyclable, compostable, or derived from renewable feedstocks.

Erthos is a Canadian cleantech startup developing plant-based materials designed to replace petroleum plastics and support a circular economy. Founded in 2019 by Nuha Siddiqui, Kritika Tyagi, and Chang Dong at the University of Toronto, the company combines biomaterials science with artificial intelligence to create sustainable plastic alternatives.

We used to be shocked to hear about gender selection in India (female feticide), while the same practice is now available globally through a gender test. A prick of your finger and you send it back to the company and they can tell you if your blood contains a Y chromosome, suggesting you have a boy.

It used to take an ultrasound and a lot of patience, waiting and time to determine the gender of a child. And even then mistakes were made. But now with Canada is one of the few countries in the world where abortion has no legal gestational limit the question about sex selection of a child has become a national issue. Since the 1988 Supreme Court decision that struck down federal restrictions, abortion is regulated purely as a health service. In practice, most clinics stop at 20 to 23 weeks, but hospitals may go later depending on medical judgment, maternal health, or severe fetal anomalies.

There is no law that prevents an abortion at any stage of pregnancy.

Into this uniquely permissive environment enters a booming American industry, which is also available in Canada: at-home fetal sex tests promising gender results as early as six weeks. One of the most visible brands, SneakPeek, markets itself with bright images of happy parents, its website promising “99% accuracy”, and the ability to bond with your child early.

The test uses a blood draw or lancet sample to detect Y-chromosome fragments in maternal blood — a form of consumer-grade cell-free DNA screening. But there’s an open secret behind the marketing: women aren’t only using these tests for bonding. Some are using them to determine whether to continue the pregnancy.

SneakPeek isn’t alone. Competing brands such as Peekaboo, eGenderTest, and a growing niche of boutique prenatal labs offer early gender testing from six to eight weeks, far earlier than the traditional ultrasound window of 14 to 20 weeks.

Their common denominator: they operate in a largely unregulated consumer space. Unlike full prenatal diagnostic tests, which fall under medical oversight, early gender kits sit in a grey zone — sold directly to consumers without clinical counseling, follow-up, or safeguards against misuse.

For Canadians, these tests which can be sent between borders raise uncomfortable questions. If an expectant mother can know fetal sex at six weeks, and abortion remains legal at any stage, what prevents sex-selective abortion, already documented in parts of Canada’s immigrant communities. This can also happen among non-immigrant communities as well. But consider provinces such as Ontario have seen statistical anomalies showing fewer female births in certain populations — a pattern associated globally with sex-selective practices called female feticide.

Canada once debated legislation that would prohibit abortion “solely for reasons of sex selection,” but no party has touched the issue since — fearing political blowback and the slippery slope of re-introducing limits. Meanwhile, consumer technology is shifting the timeline. What was once a second-trimester question is now a first-trimester decision, made in private, with no doctor involved. The ethical dilemma is not theoretical because it is already happening.

As these tests spread and become cheaper, Canada will eventually need to confront a difficult truth: technology has moved faster than policy. And for now, the companies profiting from the trade bear none of the responsibility — leaving society to navigate the consequences. Reddit forums have users discussing accuracy of the test and who uses it. They can even determine if your twins are identical or not, with 99% accuracy at 10 weeks. (Twin zygosity testing exists, but not all companies offer it — depends on the lab).

One user writes: “12 weeks and had ultrasound. I was hoping I would feel differently after it. I have four boys that I love. I have had gender disappointment with each. I’m pregnant again and did a sneak peek clinical test that was a vein draw and a home test that was a snap test and had both come back boy. I cannot stop hoping for a miscarriage. I am debating termination. I hate myself for this and feel like a terrible mother. I am so depressed. Has anyone been through this? Please don’t judge me.”

A responder writes: “It’s 100% up to you whether you choose to terminate, and that being said, I’m curious as to why a specific set of genitalia matters. There’s a chance that one of your kids could be transgender, and that means one of your current kids could be a girl, and she just hasn’t told you yet.”

Another suggests IVF to select gender “next time”

It sounds made up—until you read the documents, see the photos, and talk to the people who were there.

A new exposé by the National Post in Canada has revealed a covert program at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London, Ontario, where puppies are used in disturbing cardiac experiments that many scientists now call outdated, cruel, and unnecessary.

Security footage shows puppies arriving in unmarked vans, hidden beneath blankets, before being wheeled into a locked facility known by insiders as the “secret sixth floor.” There, researchers induce up to three-hour-long heart attacks in the dogs. After imaging the damaged organs using the same PET and MRI machines used for human patients, the dogs are euthanized, their hearts removed, and their bodies stored in barrels until disposal. Their names marked include Croissant, Toast, Rye and Bagel.

Related: Palestinian mayor offers $6 for every dead dog

The program is publicly funded, approved under Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) protocols, and legally sanctioned. But critics say that’s no longer enough.

Canada has no federal law governing the ethical treatment of animals in scientific research. We experimented on bunnies held in the Zoology building at the University of Toronto during undergrad and were told that there were ethics guidelines in place.

The CCAC provides guidelines but lacks enforcement power. In fact, the agency admitted to the IJB that it has only revoked certification once in the past eight years and does not conduct ethical reviews of individual studies.

At St. Joseph’s, hospital officials argue that the use of dogs is still necessary to model human cardiac injury.

Only 13 dogs from the program have been rehomed in over a decade, hospital officials admit.

In a country where animal experimentation is largely hidden from public view, this investigation has peeled back a curtain that many would rather keep closed. Whether the outrage sparks change—or is buried with the bodies—remains to be seen.

Early April in Northern Ontario, Canada and finally a few dry spots to test the MoonCool e-bike. This was my first attempt at putting together and riding an e-bike. First off if I had looked at the video online I would have opened the box in a few seconds. I hadn’t so 1/2 hour later I managed to open it. I needed a stronger arm to unfold the frame.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-146644" src="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/mooncool-offgrid.jpg" alt="The Mooncool bike comes 80% assembled in a big box, ready to roll.
Everything fits easily according to instruction manual except for the front light wire. I had to redo that part to make it fit (kind of short). I charged the battery in November when it arrived. It snowed the next day do had to wait till now, April to test it. The battery, which I kept in the house over the winter, held its full charge for 4 months.

Today I locked the battery in position with the key. It took a few readings of the instructions to realize that there is an on/off switch on the battery itself before the power activates the display.

Mind you I am a senior putting all this together and the excitement of finally being able to go for a ride between mud & ice spots might of made me a bit inattentive while reading the instructions.

For seniors, the cost of mobility options can be a barrier. But electric tricycles are an affordable alternative that offers long-term value. They eliminate the recurring costs associated with cars and provide the freedom to explore the city without relying on public transport or family assistance.

Electric bikes and scooters has transformed the way pedestrians can zoom around a city and town with ease – especially during the last mile of public transport. City and town life can be a whirlwind of bustling streets, crowded public transportation, and fast-paced changes.

For seniors, navigating this dynamic environment can pose unique challenges, particularly when it comes to maintaining independence and mobility. This is where e-mobility solutions, especially electric tricycles, step in as a game-changer. Mooncool sent us an electric bike to review and we are waiting for our off-grid “pilot” Raven to have enough winter battery and snowmelt for her review.

Meanwhile:

Why E-Mobility Matters for Seniors

Mobility isn’t just about getting from point A to point B; it’s about preserving autonomy, staying socially connected, and maintaining mental and physical health. Just like new moms enjoy using the baby stroller for carrying small purchases made at the mall or market, an e-bike can help older people maintain mobility and allow them to do their every day shopping and errands. As people age, traditional modes of transportation may become less accessible. Buses are hard to alight, and can be slow and overwhelming. Driving can be stressful or unsafe due to declining reflexes or vision issues. Some people choose to not keep a car in the town or city for its restrictive cost and upkeep on insurance and repairs.

Enter electric tricycles—a perfect blend of stability, ease, and efficiency. With three wheels, these bikes offer the balance seniors need, eliminating the fear of tipping over. Plus, the electric assist reduces the physical strain, making it easier to travel longer distances without exhaustion. E-bikes are getting their moment in the sun for wheeling kids around the city. Seniors want their turn.

The Advantages of Electric Tricycles

Enhanced Stability and Safety: The three-wheel design offers a solid foundation, reducing the risk of falls. This is where company’s like Mooncool safety design for elder people truly shines, providing extra features tailored to senior needs, like anti-slip pedals, low step-through frames, and ergonomic seating. The grandkids like to jump on the back!

Affordable Transportation: Owning a car comes with hefty expenses—fuel, insurance, maintenance. Electric tricycles, on the other hand, are a one-time investment with minimal upkeep costs. They’re an affordable solution for seniors looking to maintain mobility without breaking the bank.

Eco-Friendly Choice: E-trikes produce zero emissions, making them a green alternative to cars. Seniors who care about leaving a positive environmental legacy will appreciate this eco-conscious option.

Health Benefits: While the electric assist helps on tough terrains, riders can still engage in light physical activity, promoting cardiovascular health, joint mobility, and mental well-being.

Mooncool Safety Design: Built with Seniors in Mind

When it comes to senior mobility, safety isn’t negotiable. Mooncool safety design for elder people prioritizes features that address common concerns:

Low Center of Gravity: Reduces the risk of tipping over, even on uneven surfaces.

Enhanced Braking Systems: Ensures quick, controlled stops.

Comfortable Seating: Ergonomic seats with back support reduce strain during longer rides.

Visibility Features: Built-in lights and reflectors improve visibility in low-light conditions.

These thoughtful design elements help seniors feel confident and secure, encouraging more frequent use and greater independence.

Affordable Freedom in the City

For seniors, the cost of mobility options can be a barrier. But electric tricycles are an affordable alternative that offers long-term value. They eliminate the recurring costs associated with cars and provide the freedom to explore the city without relying on public transport or family assistance.

Moreover, many cities are expanding bike lanes and e-mobility infrastructure, making it safer and more convenient than ever to use electric tricycles. Seniors can run errands, visit friends, and enjoy outdoor spaces, all while maintaining control over their schedule.

A new study has found that the smartphones we all carry in our pockets could help collect weather data from the public to provide early warnings for wildfires and other extreme weather conditions.

All smartphones are equipped with multiple micro-sensors capable of collecting important environmental data, such as temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, magnetic field, light, sound, location, acceleration, gravity, and more. These data help us find our way or define our location and they warn us when the battery overheats or the device absorbs moisture — all in real time, without saving the data.

Professor Colin Price and student Hofit Shachaf from the Porter School of the Environment and Earth Sciences used data collected from the global public via the WeatherSignal app (OpenSignal) to develop a methodology for assessing wildfire risk based solely on smartphone data collected by the public.

The results were published in the journal Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS).

The researchers demonstrated that smart use of such data could support early warnings for severe wildfire events, especially since millions or even billions of data points are collected worldwide every day by our smartphones. Today, early warning systems in remote forested areas typically lack data due to the absence of weather stations in remote locations. (Some researchers are using using goats, dogs and elephants to predict the weather!)

We take our phones everywhere but the data is normally lost and not saved.

Collin Price

However, many companies have started to collect smartphone data to use for various purposes, with user consent. The researchers believe that this huge data source could aid in forecasting extreme weather and natural disasters.

One key parameter determining the likelihood of a wildfire is the moisture content in vegetation (essentially the fuel available for the fire), which, in turn, is determined by the temperature and relative humidity of the surrounding air. Both the temperature and relative humidity can be easily obtained from the public’s smartphones. But smartphone data do contain errors. The temperature reading might reflect the air conditioning in your office, while the humidity sensor might identify moisture when the user is taking a shower.

The researchers say the huge amount of data collected from smartphones allows us to remove outliers in the data set. Furthermore, since the micro-sensors are not calibrated before they are put in our phones, it was necessary to first calibrate the local smartphone data against commercial meteorological stations. This procedure turned out to be relatively straightforward, with just a single calibration needed to correct a smartphone’s readings.

After calibrating or “training” the device, the researchers analyzed major wildfire events: one was the massive fire in Portugal in July 2013. The results were surprising, with smartphone data collected from the public showing significant anomalies before and during these major fires.

“It’s surprising, but even though each smartphone has its own errors and biases, with large amounts of data from many smartphones, we can average out the errors and still retain useful data,” Shachaf says. “The large volume of data helps overcome issues associated with individual smartphones.”

“Given the rapid increase in the number of smartphones worldwide, we propose utilizing this data source to provide better early warnings to the public and disaster managers about impending natural disasters,” Professor Price concludes. “Better early warnings could prevent natural hazards from becoming natural disasters.”

Teenagers – the bastion of youth and health. But in Canada a teenager is now in critical condition after being infected with a version of the H5N1 avian influenza flu virus. Doctors and epidemics researchers are on high alert. According to news outlets in Canada the teen is in stable but critical condition, and has developed acute respiratory distress syndrome, where the lungs become so damaged that they can no longer supply enough oxygen to the body.

The teen developed symptoms on November 2, and was hospitalized at the British Columbia children’s hospital on November 8. The teens symptoms started with conjunctivitis – an infection in the eyes – along with a fever and a cough.

Viral genome sequences from the virus suggest that this is a mutated form of H5N1 — which is related to the one infecting US dairy cattle but this permutation might be better at infecting people through the human airway. If true, it could mean that this virus could rapidly evolve to make the jump from birds to humans. “There is reason to be concerned,” says immunologist Scott Hensley. “But not reason to totally freak out.”

“The fact that we have a first human case in Canada is not at all surprising, given what is happening in the US and Europe, as well as what is happening in domestic bird flocks in British Columbia,” said Dr. Brian Ward, a professor of medicine at McGill University, researcher with McGill’s J.D. MacLean Centre for Tropical Diseases, and co-director of McGill’s Vaccine Study Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

“Millions of migratory waterfowl are flying over Canada right now, many of which may be carrying or infected with the virus,” he added. “The bottom line is that increasing evidence of mammal-to-mammal spread among dairy cows, elephant seals, and mink and ermine farms is worrisome, but we don’t need to sound the sirens yet.”

Infected birds shed the avian flu in their saliva, nasal secretions, and feces. Birds become infected when they have contact with the virus as it is shed by infected birds. There is a danger when birds from poultry farms are overcrowded and wild birds contact the industrial ones under stressed conditions.
