People whose drinking water came from newer groundwater had a higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease than those whose drinking water came from older groundwater, according to a preliminary study released March 2, 2026, that will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s 78th Annual Meeting taking place April 18–22, 2026, in Chicago and online.

The study does not prove that newer groundwater causes Parkinson’s disease; it only shows an association.

The research focused on the age of groundwater and the aquifers that supply it. An aquifer is an underground layer of porous rock, silt, or sand that stores and transports groundwater. Scientists increasingly see water sources as a window into long-term environmental exposures.

“One way to examine our exposure to modern pollution is through our drinking water,” said study author Brittany Krzyzanowski, PhD, of the Atria Research Institute in New York City, who conducted the research while at the Barrow Neurological Institute. “Newer groundwater, created by precipitation that has fallen within the past 70 to 75 years, has been exposed to more pollutants. Older groundwater typically contains fewer contaminants because it is generally deeper and better shielded from surface contaminants. Our study found that groundwater age and location is a potential environmental risk factor of Parkinson’s disease.”

The study analyzed data from 12,370 people with Parkinson’s disease and more than 1.2 million people without the disease, matched for age, sex, race, and ethnicity. All participants lived within three miles of 1,279 groundwater sampling sites across 21 major U.S. aquifers.

A case for raw water from ancient sources

A natural raw water spring in Nipissing, Ontario.

Researchers examined groundwater age, aquifer type, and drinking water source—such as municipal groundwater systems or private wells—as indicators of possible exposure to neurotoxic contaminants.

Two types of aquifers stood out. Carbonate aquifers, made mostly of limestone, often allow water to move quickly through fractures, making them more vulnerable to surface contamination. Glacial aquifers, formed more than 12,000 years ago as glaciers advanced and retreated, are composed of sand and gravel that can naturally filter water as it moves underground.

After adjusting for factors such as age, sex, income, and air pollution, people whose drinking water came from carbonate aquifers had a 24% higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease compared with those whose water came from other aquifers. When compared specifically with people whose water came from glacial aquifers, the risk was 62% higher.

Researchers also found that older groundwater appeared to have a protective effect in carbonate aquifers. For each increase in groundwater age, the risk of Parkinson’s disease declined by about 6.5%. In contrast, groundwater formed in the past 75 years in carbonate systems was linked to an 11% higher risk compared to water dating back to the ice age.

“We speculate that the apparent protective effect of older groundwater is seen mainly in carbonate aquifers because these systems can show a clearer contrast between newer and older water,” said Krzyzanowski. “In these aquifers, newly recharged groundwater is more vulnerable to surface contamination, while older groundwater can remain cleaner if it is separated from recent inputs by a confining layer.”

“In contrast, glacial aquifers tend to slow groundwater movement and naturally filter contaminants as water travels underground,” she added.

The findings highlight how where drinking water comes from may matter for long-term health. People can often learn about their water source through local utilities or regional groundwater agencies. For households using private wells, testing water periodically and considering filtration systems can help reduce potential exposure to contaminants.

“This study highlights that where our water comes from, including the age of groundwater and the type of water source, could shape long-term neurological health,” said Krzyzanowski. “While additional research is needed, bringing together knowledge about groundwater and brain health may help communities better assess and reduce environmental risks.”

For the one in three (98 million) Americans living with prediabetes, a surprising fresh fruit pairing may hold promise for heart health. A new study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association suggests that adding one avocado and a cup of mango to your daily routine may help support key markers of cardiovascular health.

Adults with prediabetes who enjoyed this combination daily for eight weeks saw improvements in blood vessel function and diastolic blood pressure – two important indicators of cardiovascular wellness.

Amba is a mango relish you can make

Conducted by researchers at Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech), the study asked adults with prediabetes to follow an Avocado-Mango (AM) diet – adding one medium Hass avocado and a cup of fresh mango to their daily meals and snacks for eight weeks. A calorie-matched control group followed a similar diet, with avocado and mango replaced by calorically comparable carbohydrate-based foods. Those on the AM diet saw meaningful improvements in blood vessel function, which supports healthy circulation, and diastolic blood pressure, a key factor in long-term heart health, compared to the control group.

Avocado toast, a family favorite

Blood vessel function improved significantly in participants on the AM diet. They experienced a significant increase in flow-mediated dilation (FMD) – a key measure of endothelial function (blood vessel health) – to 6.7%, compared with a decline to 4.6% in the control. This suggests a meaningful improvement.

Diastolic blood pressure also significantly improved, particularly among men. In the control group, men saw an average central blood pressure increase of 5 points (mmHg), while those on the AM diet experienced a reduction of about 1.9 points – a difference that can be clinically significant if sustained. These benefits occurred without changes in calorie intake or body weight, suggesting that nutrient-dense fruits like avocado and mango may support cardiovascular health without major lifestyle changes.

Mangoes – exotic, delicious. Luscious.

“This research reinforces the power of food-first strategies to help reduce cardiovascular disease risk, particularly in vulnerable populations like those with prediabetes,” said Britt Burton-Freeman, PhD, Principal Investigator and Professor at Illinois Tech. “It’s an encouraging message: small, nutrient-dense additions—like incorporating avocado and mango into meals and snacks—may support heart health without the need for strict rules or major dietary overhauls.”

The Avocado-Mango group also saw increases in fiber, vitamin C, and heart-healthy monounsaturated fat – nutrients tied to cardiovascular wellness – without changes in calorie intake or body weight.
While no significant differences were found in cholesterol, blood sugar, or inflammation, the findings highlight the value of adding nutrient-rich fruits to the diet, especially for those at risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Introduction: The Digital Pulse of Modern Fitness

In an era where smartphones are ubiquitous and health consciousness is at an all-time high, the fitness industry has undergone a radical digital transformation. Fitness applications have moved far beyond simple pedometers, evolving into comprehensive wellness platforms that serve as personal trainers, nutritionists, and community hubs right in our pockets. This sector is not just growing—it’s exploding, with the global fitness app market projected to exceed $120 billion by 2030. For a forward-thinking software development company, this represents a monumental opportunity. However, success in this competitive arena requires more than just coding ability; it demands a deep understanding of user psychology, seamless hardware integration, and data-driven personalization. This is where the specialized expertise of a partner like Cogniteq becomes a game-changer, transforming a standard development project into a strategic, market-leading digital health solution.

The Engine of Growth: Key Drivers Fueling the Fitness App Boom 1. The Post-Pandemic Paradigm Shift in Health

The COVID-19 pandemic served as a profound catalyst, permanently altering our relationship with health and fitness. With gyms closed and routines disrupted, millions turned to digital solutions for the first time. This shift revealed lasting advantages: unparalleled convenience, flexibility, and personalized pacing. What began as a necessity has solidified into a preferred modality for a vast user base, creating a sustained and growing demand for high-quality, at-home, and on-the-go fitness guidance.

2. The Quantified Self and Data-Driven Wellness

Today’s fitness enthusiasts are empowered by data. Users no longer simply “work out”; they seek to optimize every variable—from heart rate zones and calorie burn to sleep quality and recovery metrics. Modern fitness apps satisfy this demand by aggregating data from wearables (smartwatches, heart rate monitors, smart scales) and using sophisticated algorithms to provide actionable insights. This transformation of raw data into personalized coaching advice is a core value proposition that keeps users engaged and subscribed.

3. The Rise of Holistic and Mental Wellness

The definition of “fitness” has broadened significantly. Users now seek a 360-degree approach to well-being that integrates physical training with mental health, nutrition, and recovery. Leading apps have expanded their offerings to include guided meditation, stress management exercises, sleep stories, and macro-nutrient tracking. This holistic approach increases user stickiness by addressing multiple facets of their wellness journey within a single, cohesive ecosystem.

4. Gamification and the Power of Community

Human beings are intrinsically motivated by achievement and social connection. Top-tier fitness apps brilliantly leverage this through gamification (badges, streaks, challenges, leaderboards) and community features (social feeds, group challenges, direct messaging). These elements transform the solitary act of exercise into a shared, competitive, and rewarding experience.
A sweeping new genetic analysis of more than 900,000 people in the United States has revealed something profound: as we age, parts of our DNA physically change — and for some people, those changes happen up to four times faster than for others. We’ve read the research that trauma and environmental exposure can hurt us at the DNA and cellular level, harming our future offspring, but this new research will be useful for life hackers, people that want to try to live forever.

Life hackers like Bryan Johnson, a US tech entrepreneur (founder of Braintree, which acquired Venmo) has turned his body into a full-scale longevity experiment called Blueprint. This latest research might allow some people to figure out how they “optimize” differently to live as long as possible.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-151625" src="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/bryan-johnson-life-hacker.jpg" alt="Life hacking is a modern catch-all for a growing movement that treats the human body and mind as systems that can be measured, tested, and improved.
The study, published this week in the leading science journal Nature, examined repetitive stretches of DNA known as repeat expansions — short genetic sequences that copy themselves again and again over time. These repeats are already known to cause more than 60 inherited diseases, including Huntington’s disease, myotonic dystrophy, and some forms of ALS. What scientists hadn’t realized until now is just how common, dynamic, and genetically controlled this process is across the general population.

“We found that most human genomes contain repeat elements that expand as we age,” said Margaux L. A. Hujoel, PhD, lead author of the study and assistant professor at UCLA. “Some individuals’ repeats expand four times faster than others. That level of genetic control points to real opportunities for intervention.”

Researchers from Broad Institute, Harvard Medical School, and UCLA analyzed whole-genome data from nearly half a million UK Biobank participants and more than 400,000 people enrolled in the U.S.-based All of Us Research Program. Using newly developed computational tools, the team measured instability across more than 356,000 repeat locations in the genome.

Related: why this ski resort town is being hunted by ALS

What they found reshapes how scientists think about genetic aging. Repeat expansions were shown to increase steadily with age in blood cells, while 29 distinct genetic regions were identified that either accelerate or slow this expansion. Strikingly, the same DNA repair genes could stabilize one repeat while destabilizing another — a reminder that biology rarely behaves in simple, linear ways.

One discovery stood out. Expansions in the GLS gene, present in about 0.03% of people, were linked to a 14-fold increased risk of severe kidney disease and a threefold increase in liver disease risk — pointing to a previously unrecognized repeat expansion disorder hiding in plain sight.

Related: life hacks using olive oil

Why does this matter? Because these expanding repeats may become measurable biomarkers — early warning signs that disease processes are accelerating long before symptoms appear. More importantly, the naturally occurring genetic variants that slow repeat expansion may show researchers which molecular pathways to target with future therapies.

“This work tells us that genetic aging isn’t uniform,” Hujoel said. “And if we can learn how to slow it in some people, we may be able to slow disease itself.”

For a world grappling with aging populations and chronic disease, the message is clear: our DNA is not static — but it may be more steerable than we thought.

What is life hacking?

Life hacking is a modern catch-all for a growing movement that treats the human body and mind as systems that can be measured, tested, and improved. A life hacker uses tools from biohacking, data tracking, and behavioral science to pursue human optimization and self-optimization, often through the quantified self approach—measuring sleep, nutrition, stress, and performance to guide personal optimization and performance hacking. Increasingly, this mindset is focused on longevity hacking and anti-aging biohacking, with the aim to slow aging naturally, reduce one’s biological age, and in some cases even attempt to reverse aging.

Central to this effort are concepts like lifespan extension and healthspan optimization, which prioritize living healthier for longer, not just living longer. Researchers and biohackers alike track aging biomarkers such as DNA aging, telomeres, and epigenetic age to understand how fast the body is aging at a cellular level—and whether lifestyle, technology, or medical interventions can meaningfully change that trajectory.

We say eat well, exercise within reason, love your God, your nation and your family, and you will have a great life.

A pre-clinical study recently published in Antioxidants finds that Lycored’s Lycomato product used in nutraceuticals has significant benefits for cellular health and aging. Results from this study show Lycomato can improve mitochondrial function, reduce oxidative stress, and protect against cellular damage—all factors that slow the cellular aging process and effect longevity.

Many of us are trying the high-protein keto diet to get fit and are eating protein shakes and enzymes. But have you looked at lycopenes?

To assess the effectiveness of Lycomato, based on lycopene, in delaying cellular aging, researchers treated cells with rotenone, a compound that triggers mitochondrial dysfunction.

Results showed that when cells were also pre-treated with Lycomato, mitochondrial function improved, mitochondrial ROS levels were reduced by about 70%, ATP levels restored to around 70% and the number of senescent cells was dramatically reduced to near-normal levels.

Together, results suggest Lycomato and similar phytonutrient-rich compounds could serve as potential agents for promoting cellular health and longevity.

The company also produces a food dye that replaces the dangerous Red 40 which is both halal and kosher.

How does Lycored red work?

Mitochondria, the energy (ATP) producers of cells, become less efficient and generate more harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS) over time. Increased oxidative stress damages cells, impairs cellular function, triggers cell senescence and accelerates aging. Studies suggest improving mitochondrial function can extend lifespan and promote healthier aging.

These findings support previous research demonstrating the beneficial effect of lycopene, the hero among the six standardized phytonutrients found in Lycomato, on telomere length, a factor deeply connected to cellular aging.

Elizabeth Tarshish, from Lycored states, “Healthier mitochondria generate less oxidative stress, provide more cellular energy and support improved cellular function, contributing to a slower aging process. We’re excited by the growing body of evidence that demonstrates Lycomato may help delay the aging process, extend cell lifespan, and maintain healthier tissues over time.”

Lycored is an international company at the forefront of discovering the beauty within by combining nature’s goodness with cutting edge science to deliver a sensory journey that impacts wellbeing. Established in 1995 in Israel, Lycored is the global leader in natural carotenoids for food, beverage and dietary supplement products. Read more about the company here.
Some of the tools to help treat breast cancer and breast cancer re-occurance risk may be harming women as well. It’s known that radiation and chemotherapy take a toll on the body in the short term but in a new study, treatments against breast cancer can also cause significant long term affects that speed up the aging process in survivors.

In a new study led by investigators at the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center doctors found that common breast cancer treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, may accelerate the biological aging process in breast cancer survivors.

The findings, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, show that markers of cellular aging—such as DNA damage response, cellular senescence, and inflammatory pathways—significantly increased in all breast cancer survivors, regardless of the type of treatment received.

This suggests that the impact of breast cancer treatments on the body is more extensive than previously thought.

“For the first time, we’re showing that the signals we once thought were driven by chemotherapy are also present in women undergoing radiation and surgery,” said study lead author Judith Carroll, an associate professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at UCLA: “While we expected to see increased gene expression linked to biological aging in women who received chemotherapy, we were surprised to find similar changes in those who only underwent radiation or surgery.”

Advances in cancer therapies have greatly improved survival rates, with an estimated 4 million breast cancer survivors in the US today and over 6 million expected by 2040. However, breast cancer is linked to accelerated aging, impacting physical abilities, independence, and lifespan. Biological aging processes, which drive conditions like fatigue, cognitive decline, frailty, and cardiovascular disease, appear to be a major factor.

Evidence suggests that cancer treatments, like chemotherapy, can increase the risk of earlier onset of these aging-related conditions, making it crucial to understand the specific pathways involved to better target and manage them.

To examine how gene expression related to aging changes over time in women diagnosed with breast cancer, the team conducted a two-year longitudinal study that tracked women undergoing breast cancer treatment prior to receiving treatment and again following treatment to see how their biological aging markers evolved.

The team tracked the gene expression in their blood cells using RNA sequencing, focusing on markers that signal biological aging — including a process known as cellular senescence, which is when cells stop dividing but don’t die. These so-called “zombie cells” accumulate over time and can release harmful substances that damage nearby healthy cells, contributing to aging and inflammation.

The data was then analyzed using statistical models to help identify aging-related changes.

The team found that regardless of treatment type there was an increase in expression of genes that track cellular processes involved in biological aging. Specifically, genes that capture cellular senescence and the inflammatory signal from these cells, indicating that their immune cells were aging faster than normal.

They also saw increases in DNA damage response genes, which are genes that are expressed when there is DNA damage. Although chemotherapy did have a slightly different pattern, similar to what others have shown, they also noted changes in women who did not receive chemotherapy.

“The results suggest women who receive treatment for breast cancer have a pattern of gene expression that indicates increased DNA damage and inflammation, which could be important targets for recovering from cancer and having a better quality of life in survivorship,” said senior author of the study Julienne Bower, professor of psychology in the UCLA College and psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences and member of the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“We’ve only just begun to understand the long-term consequences of cancer therapy and these findings are a critical step toward understanding the biological pathways that drive many post-treatment symptoms in breast cancer survivors,” added Carroll. “Our goal is to find ways to improve survivorship, not just in terms of years lived, but also in quality of life and overall health.”

The team is now exploring a new biomarker that measures a woman’s biological age and the pace at which she is aging. This could help determine whether the aging signals detected during cancer treatment have a long-term effect on biological age. The team plans to investigate factors that may influence this, with a focus on protective behaviors such as exercise, stress management and healthy sleep patterns. Green Prophet previously covered the hunt for a breast cancer biomarker. You can read it here.

With the help of new technology and machine learning algorithms, doctors can now use data-driven insights to predict and prevent diseases, find high-risk patients, and ensure each person gets the appropriate treatment.

The impact of predictive analytics in healthcare cannot be overstated. Research estimates that by 2021, the healthcare predictive analytics market will be worth $9.3 billion, expanding at a CAGR of 24.5%. Rapid expansion like this demonstrates predictive analytics’s rising significance in the healthcare industry.

In this article, we’ll explore predictive analytics in healthcare and see how it impacts the industry.

What exactly is Predictive Analytics?

Simply put, predictive analytics is a type of data analysis that uses statistical algorithms and machine learning to figure out the possibility that future events are going to happen based on what has happened in the past.

In healthcare, this means using and analyzing patient data gathered from sources like electronic health records, medical imaging, and wearable devices to identify patterns and risk factors that can be used to forecast outcomes like the occurrence of diseases, complications, the onset of a condition, and adverse events.

How is Predictive Analytics Being Used in Healthcare?

Humans can take months going through scans. Computers can do it much faster

Below, we will discuss how predictive analytics is used in healthcare.

Early Detection and Prevention

Predictive analytics significantly impacts healthcare by facilitating early detection and prevention of diseases, thereby playing a crucial role in population health management and preventive care. By analyzing patient data, medical professionals can identify individuals at high risk of developing chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, or Alzheimer’s, and subsequently devise targeted intervention strategies to mitigate or manage these conditions.

Through the implementation of predictive models and machine learning algorithms, healthcare professionals can uncover correlations between seemingly unrelated factors, contributing to a more comprehensive risk assessment. This empowers practitioners to make informed decisions and deliver personalized, proactive care to at-risk individuals, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes and reduced disease prevalence.

Understanding the senior heart age and how it can impact overall health is crucial for preventing heart-related issues later in life. By factoring in elements such as lifestyle choices and genetic predispositions, healthcare providers can offer targeted advice and interventions to improve heart health and extend longevity.

Undergoing treatment before something happens may be the best approach to protecting your heart and maintaining independence as you age. People who are prone to getting a stroke are ordering Eliquis online which helps them regulate blood clotting and reduce the risk of severe complications. Taking these preventative steps can give individuals more control over their health. It also allows them to stay active and engaged in their daily routines with greater confidence.

Personalized Treatment Plans

The effects of Chinese medicine, herbal and acupuncture can be quantified and integrated with predictive medicine

Leveraging patient data and identifying patterns and risk factors enable healthcare professionals to design customized treatment plans that address each patient’s unique needs. This results in more effective therapies and reduced adverse effects, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Personalized medicine, a burgeoning field in healthcare, harnesses the power of advanced analytics and genomics to create individualized treatment regimens, taking into account factors such as genetic makeup, lifestyle, and environmental influences. Tailoring the process enhances the efficacy of medical interventions, reduces the likelihood of adverse drug reactions, and shortens recovery times, leading to an overall improvement in the quality of patient care.

Resource Allocation and Optimization

Predictive analytics allows healthcare providers to anticipate the demand for specific services, facilitating optimal resource allocation.

For instance, detecting an increase in the prevalence of a particular condition enables practitioners to reallocate beds, surgical instruments, and medical equipment to ensure patients receive timely and appropriate care. Predictive analytics can inform staff scheduling, ensuring adequate personnel are available to address fluctuations in patient volume.

Through resource optimization and allocation alongside streamlining operations, healthcare facilities can enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and minimize patient wait times, ultimately improving the overall patient experience and contributing to better health outcomes.

Minimizing Hospital Return Rates

Utilizing predictive analytics, medical providers can identify patients at higher risk of hospital readmission and implement preventive measures, such as personalized treatment plans or post-discharge support.

This approach not only reduces readmission rates but also alleviates overall healthcare costs. Analyzing factors such as patients’ medical histories, social determinants of health, and follow-up care compliance, healthcare providers can develop targeted interventions to support patients during their recovery and minimize the likelihood of readmission.

These strategies may include comprehensive discharge planning, home care services, or telemedicine consultations, ensuring patients receive adequate support and resources to manage their conditions effectively.

Fostering Patient-Centered Care

Lastly, predictive analytics enhances patient experiences by enabling healthcare providers to better comprehend patient needs and preferences. If areas for improvement, such as reduced wait times or more accessible communication channels are identified, providers can create a more patient-centric healthcare environment. Advanced analytics can also inform the development of tailored patient education materials, ensuring patients receive relevant and easily digestible information about their health conditions and treatment options. By fostering a culture of patient-centered care, healthcare providers can empower patients to take an active role in managing their health, leading to increased satisfaction and improved long-term health outcomes.

Healthcare Predictive Analytics Examples

There are numerous examples of healthcare predictive analytics. Some of them include the following:

Improving Medication Adherence

With predictive analytics for healthcare, providers can find patients who are likely to stop taking their medications and create targeted interventions to help them do so. Some of these interventions are reminders, education, and other ways to help people take their medicine as prescribed.

Optimizing Hospital Operations

Another use is that it improves how a hospital runs, like managing beds, staffing, and inventory. Healthcare providers can estimate the number of patients and the number of staff members they will need. With this, hospitals ensure they have enough staff and the tools to give high-quality care.

Population health management

Professionals can identify trends and patterns that may impact health outcomes, e.g., disease prevalence, risk factors, and social determinants of health. They can use this information to develop targeted interventions and care plans to improve health outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.

Fraud detection

Stakeholders can use predictive analytics to look at healthcare claims data and find patterns that may point to fraud, waste, or abuse, like billing for services or treatments that were not needed. Providers can use this information to look into and stop fraud, lower costs, and improve healthcare quality.

Drug development

The process of making a drug is complicated and expensive. It involves finding possible drug targets, testing the drug’s effectiveness and safety, and getting regulatory approval. At different points in the drug development process, predictive analytics is used to improve target identification, predict how well a drug will work, and improve the design of clinical trials.

Conclusion

Predictive analytics is transforming the healthcare industry in unprecedented ways. While its use in healthcare is still in its early stages, it holds immense promise for the future of medicine. As technology improves, we expect to see more examples of healthcare predictive analytics that will improve results and change the medical field.

But as we embrace the potential of predictive analytics, it is important to remember that we must also prioritize patient privacy and data security. We must ensure that providers remain committed to patient-centered care.
