<p><strong>Children as young as 8 years have fingerprints on 4,500 year-old pottery vessels found in an archeology site in Syria </strong></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Archaeologists analyzed 450 pottery vessels made in Tel Hama, a town at the edge of the Ebla Kingdom, one of the most important Syrian kingdoms in the Early Bronze Age (about 4,500 years ago), and found that two thirds of the pottery vessels were made by children &#8211; starting at the ages of seven and eight. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Along with the use of children for the needs of the kingdom, they also found evidence of the children&#8217;s’ independent creations outside the industrial framework, which illustrate the spark of childhood even in early urban societies. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">The research was led by Akiva Sanders from Tel Aviv University in cooperation with researchers from Copenhagen</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The findings were published in the journal </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Childhood in the Past</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;Our research allows us a rare glimpse into the lives of children who lived in the area of the Ebla Kingdom, one of the oldest kingdoms in the world,&#8221; says Sanders. &#8220;We discovered that at its peak, roughly from 2400 to 2000 BCE, the cities associated with the kingdom began to rely on child labor for the industrial production of pottery. The children worked in workshops starting at the age of seven, and were specially trained to create cups as uniformly as possible &#8211; which were used in the kingdom in everyday life and at royal banquets.&#8221; </span></p>
<p><strong>Related: <a href="https://www.greenprophet.com/2024/01/pottery-glaze-mars/">This pottery glaze could work on Mars</a></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As is well known, a person&#8217;s fingerprints do not change throughout their life. For this reason, the size of the palm can be roughly deduced from measuring the density of the margins of the fingerprint &#8211; and from the size of the palm, the age and sex of the person can estimated. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The pottery from Tel Hama, on the southern border of the Kingdom of Ebla, was excavated in the 1930s, and since then has been kept in the National Museum in Denmark. From the analysis of the fingerprints of the pottery it appears that most of them were made by children. In the city of Hama city two thirds of the pottery was made by children &#8211; the other third was created by older men.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;At the beginning of the Early Bronze Age, some of the world’s first city-kingdoms arose in the Levant and Mesopotamia,&#8221; says Sanders. &#8220;We wanted to use the fingerprints on the pottery to understand how processes such as urbanization and the centralization government functions affected the demographics of the ceramic industry. In the town of Hama, an ancient center for the production of ceramics, we initially see potters around the age of 12 and 13, with half the potters being under 18, and with boys and girls in equal proportions. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;This statistic changes with the formation of the Kingdom of Ebla, when we see that potters were starting to produce more goblets for banquets. And since more and more alcohol-fueled feasts were held, the cups were frequently broken &#8211; and therefore more cups needed to be made.</span></p>
<figure id="attachment_145129" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-145129" style="width: 2560px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-145129" src="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/royal-palace-ebla.jpg" alt="Palace in Ebla" width="2560" height="1707" srcset="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/royal-palace-ebla.jpg 2560w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/royal-palace-ebla-350x233.jpg 350w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/royal-palace-ebla-660x440.jpg 660w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/royal-palace-ebla-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/royal-palace-ebla-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/royal-palace-ebla-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/royal-palace-ebla-800x533.jpg 800w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/royal-palace-ebla-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/royal-palace-ebla-337x225.jpg 337w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/royal-palace-ebla-180x120.jpg 180w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/royal-palace-ebla-810x540.jpg 810w" sizes="(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-145129" class="wp-caption-text">A palace in the ancient Syrian kingdom of Ebla</figcaption></figure>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;Not only did the Kingdom begin to rely more and more on child labor, but the children were trained to make the cups as similar to each other as possible. This is a phenomenon we also see in the industrial revolution in Europe and America: it is very easy to control children and teach them specific movements to create standardization in handicrafts.&#8221;</span></p>
<figure id="attachment_145130" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-145130" style="width: 2560px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-145130" src="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kloosterman-clay-pottery-scaled.jpg" alt="Modern, handmade pottery vessels bahaus and brut style by Kloosterman Clay" width="2560" height="1707" srcset="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kloosterman-clay-pottery-scaled.jpg 2560w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kloosterman-clay-pottery-350x233.jpg 350w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kloosterman-clay-pottery-660x440.jpg 660w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kloosterman-clay-pottery-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kloosterman-clay-pottery-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kloosterman-clay-pottery-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kloosterman-clay-pottery-800x533.jpg 800w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kloosterman-clay-pottery-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kloosterman-clay-pottery-338x225.jpg 338w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kloosterman-clay-pottery-180x120.jpg 180w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kloosterman-clay-pottery-810x540.jpg 810w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-145130" class="wp-caption-text">Modern, handmade pottery vessels Bauhaus and brutal style by Kloosterman Clay. Today child labor is considered a crime.</figcaption></figure>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, there was one bright spot in the children&#8217;s lives: making tiny figurines and and miniature vessels for themselves. &#8220;These children taught each other to make miniature figurines and vessels, without the involvement of the adults,&#8221; says Dr. Sanders. “It is safe to say that they were created by children &#8211; and probably including those skilled children from the cup-making workshops. It seems that in these figurines the children expressed their creativity and their imagination.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><a href="https://www.thenationalnews.com/mena/syria/2024/02/23/german-collector-investigated-over-ancient-syrian-artefact-stolen-from-museum/">Ancient artifacts are easy to find and loot from Syria</a>. Most of the archeology sites are without strict security. And <a href="https://www.greenprophet.com/2024/07/protect-palmyra/">terror groups like ISIS have blown up major archeology sites in Syria and the Middle East</a> over the years.</p>

<p>Scarlet red, a pigment made from insects, is used to make frappacinos pink at Starbucks but it was the dye of choice to make the color scarlet in ancient Biblical times. A piece of ancient scarlet-colored cloth was found in a cave in Israel and was recently studied.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The color of the rare 3,800-year-old textile was produced from the oak scale insects, which the researchers identify with the biblical &#8220;Tola‛at Hashani” (scarlet worm).</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The color scarlet worm is mentioned 25 times in the Bible, often alongside <a href="https://www.greenprophet.com/2013/12/hidden-secrets-of-techelet-holy-blue-dye-discovered-in-israel/">blue (holy Tekhelet)</a> and <a href="https://www.greenprophet.com/2021/01/king-david-purple-dye/">purple (Argaman &#8211; see King Davi&#8217;d cloth)</a>, which are considered the most precious and prestigious colors in the ancient world.</p>
<figure id="attachment_144290" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-144290" style="width: 1600px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-144290" src="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/ancient-red-samples.jpg" alt="sample kermes ancient dye" width="1600" height="1200" srcset="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/ancient-red-samples.jpg 1600w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/ancient-red-samples-350x263.jpg 350w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/ancient-red-samples-660x495.jpg 660w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/ancient-red-samples-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/ancient-red-samples-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/ancient-red-samples-500x375.jpg 500w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/ancient-red-samples-800x600.jpg 800w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/ancient-red-samples-1000x750.jpg 1000w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/ancient-red-samples-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/ancient-red-samples-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/ancient-red-samples-180x135.jpg 180w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/ancient-red-samples-720x540.jpg 720w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-144290" class="wp-caption-text">Samples of fabric created from insect that dyes red</figcaption></figure>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">It is mentioned in the context of luxurious clothing, in the use of Tabernacle textiles, and in other cultic contexts.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The rare textile, which is less than 2cm in size was discovered in 2016 in the “Cave of Skulls” during excavations conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority and the Hebrew University as part of a broad Heritage Project to save heritage finds in the Judean Desert caves from antiquities theft.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The excavation, led by Dr. Eitan Klein, Dr. Uri Davidovich, Roi Porat and Amir Ganor, uncovered a tiny red textile, which was sent for further research along with dozens of other textiles found in the cave. Despite its small size, the textile&#8217;s color caught the researchers’ attention.</p>
<figure id="attachment_144291" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-144291" style="width: 2560px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-144291 size-full" src="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/red-cloth-dye-scaled.jpg" alt="Red cloth found in this archeological excavation site in Israel" width="2560" height="1696" srcset="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/red-cloth-dye-scaled.jpg 2560w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/red-cloth-dye-350x232.jpg 350w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/red-cloth-dye-660x437.jpg 660w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/red-cloth-dye-768x509.jpg 768w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/red-cloth-dye-1536x1017.jpg 1536w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/red-cloth-dye-2048x1356.jpg 2048w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/red-cloth-dye-800x530.jpg 800w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/red-cloth-dye-1000x662.jpg 1000w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/red-cloth-dye-340x225.jpg 340w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/red-cloth-dye-180x119.jpg 180w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/red-cloth-dye-815x540.jpg 815w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-144291" class="wp-caption-text">Red cloth found in this archeological excavation site in Israel</figcaption></figure>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Using analytical equipment, they identified the origin of the dye, finding that oak-scale insects produced the red dye used for the woolen weft threads while the warp threads, made of linen, remained uncolored. The textile was dated to the Middle Bronze Age (1767-1954 BCE) using carbon-14 analysis.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The research was led by Naama Sukenik from the Israel Antiquities Authority, Prof. Zohar Amar and Prof. David Iluz from Bar-Ilan University. Like most archaeological research, it takes years to sift through findings and analyze results: The research results were published this week in the <em>Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports</em>.</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;In ancient times, the dye was produced from the female scale insect, which lives on the kermes oak tree (<em>Quercus coccifera</em>),&#8221; said Sukenik: “Collecting these kermes was done in a very short window of time – one month out of the year, in the summer, after the female laid her eggs but before they hatched— when the amount of dye was greatest.</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">The short period in which the kermes could be collected, the difficulty in finding them due to their small size (between 3–8 mm), and their camouflage colors, that make it difficult to locate them, as well as the small amount of dye that can be produced from them — and on the other hand, the beautiful red hue (scarlet) that can be produced from them for dyeing textiles, made their use highly prestigious.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-144292" src="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kermes-vermilio.jpg" alt="The red kermes vermilio" width="600" height="800" srcset="https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kermes-vermilio.jpg 600w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kermes-vermilio-350x467.jpg 350w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kermes-vermilio-495x660.jpg 495w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kermes-vermilio-169x225.jpg 169w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kermes-vermilio-101x135.jpg 101w, https://www.greenprophet.com/wp-content/uploads/kermes-vermilio-405x540.jpg 405w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The red dye from kermes was mentioned in ancient trade documents, such as in cuneiform tablets from Mesopotamia, dating back to 1425 BCE.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;In the Bible, the dye extracted from oak scale insects is referred to as &#8220;scarlet worm,&#8221; says Amar of Bar-Ilan University. The term &#8220;worm&#8221; in ancient times was a general term for various insects and their developmental stages. The biblical association of this color with a living creature demonstrates impressive zoological knowledge, considering that female scale insects lack legs and wings, to the extent that some Greek and Roman naturalists even mistook them for plant granules.</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">Throughout history, various species of scale insects have been used to produce red dye. To this day, in South America, another species of cochineal scale insect, which lives on certain species of cacti, is used for dyeing textiles.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">According to Prof. David Iluz from Bar-Ilan University: &#8220;Although it was discovered that Israel has a native species of scale insect living on Palestinian oak (<em>Quercus calliprinos</em>), capable of producing a red-orange color, the analytical results indicate that in the case at hand, the species of scale insects is <em>Kermes vermilio</em> which lives on the kermes oak tree (<em>Quercus coccifera</em>).</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;This tree species is common in the central and eastern Mediterranean region, including Spain, France, and other areas, but is not found in the Land of Israel.&#8221;</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Despite the wealth of written historical evidence about the widespread use of dyeing with scale insects in the ancient world, until today, very few textiles dyed with kermes insects that predate the Roman period have been found worldwide.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The red textile from the “Cave of the Skulls” in the Judean Desert represents, as far as we know, the earliest evidence of woolen textile dyed with kermes.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;Although it is difficult to know how this textile arrived in this desert cave, it is significant evidence of ancient knowledge in dyeing wool fibers using scale insects to achieve the red color as early as the Middle Bronze Age — about 3,800 years ago,&#8221; says Uri Davidovich, an excavation director at the Cave of the Skulls on behalf of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.</p>
