Lindsay Lohan flies a flag for modest Middle East fashion

modest muslim fashionAmerican actress Lindsay Lohan made an appearance at London Modest Fashion Week (LMFW), a two-day event launched last year in the British capital to promote regional designers who cater to culturally conservative consumers. Invited as a special Guest of Honor, the former wild child took a front row seat at LMFW’s opening ceremony dressed in a silky black hijab. The 31-year-old reportedly relocated to Dubai in 2016, citing her appreciation of the nation’s anti-paparazzi laws on her Instagram account. “I heard it’s not legal to take photos in Dubai without consent… privacy like #monaco and more important world issues than a random photo of me,” Lohan captioned one shot.  She has also spoken of the “calmness” she’s felt since moving to the United Arab Emirates. Now she appears to have further embraced the culture of her adopted home by donning the hijab.

Back in London, she was snapped by other fans of modern fashion, with images popping up on social media. She mingled with Saudi designer Samah Khashoggi, who presented her brand Samah Abayas latest collection on Saturday. Lohan also attended Turkish designer Zeynep Kartal’s Autumn/Winter 2018 show, wearing a black leather dress teamed with a baseball cap with an attached headscarf.

The star later revealed she was wearing a Muslim-friendly beauty look, after dropping by a stall for vegan and halal cosmetic company Hawa.“Oh my days! As if Lindsay Lohan came over to say hello to Team Hawa!” the brand posted on Instagram, alongside a shot of Lohan.“She was so lovely and was saying how she’s into halal cosmetics and what she’s actually wearing on her face today was all halal!”

Arising to fame as a child star in movies such as The Parent Trap (1998),  Freaky Friday (2003), and Mean Girls (2004), Lohan grew up in the public eye. Later entanglements with romantic partners and the police made her a darling of the tabloids.

In December, Lohan told Entertainment Tonight that “I really enjoy my serenity in Dubai… you can go out and have fun, but it’s a different kind of fun that you have. I can actually focus on what I want to do in life. I don’t have to be scrutinized every second. I can have a private life and have a public life, but when I choose to. And I think that’s really important.”

Later this year she is starting production on a film featuring an all-female cast in Saudi Arabia. The movie, called Frame, will follow the story of an American photographer who leaves her husband in America to move to Riyadh. The character becomes immersed in Saudi culture, said Lohan, and is taken in by a group of women who introduce her to their lives.

Publicity stunt or a sincere start on a new life chapter? Maybe she’ll join forces with Haifaa Al Mansour, the first female filmmaker in Saudi Arabia. Watch this space.
