Massive sandstorm swallows Amman’s airport!

Sandstorm closes Amman airportA massive sandstorm swooped down on Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, Jordan today – a small part of an extreme weather pattern descending on the region. Strong winds sent desert sand airborne, darkening skies across the kingdom and causing near blackout conditions in Jordan’s capital city.

Hot winds whipped across the desert plains surrounding the country’s main airport, and the resulting sandstorms forced changes to air traffic patterns, diverting regularly scheduled arrivals to Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv. Flights operated by other Arab carriers, which cannot land in Israel, diverted to Aqaba airport in southern Jordan.

Extreme sandstorms – and concurrently, lashing rain in other parts of the country – are disrupting air and ground transport in Palestine, Israel and especially water-starved Jordan, where a heavy heat wave has prompted calls for a national holiday. Viva climate change!

  1. JTR says:

The Earth’s weather system is reacting to the massive and growing tons of pollution we humans dump every day, and until we agree to safely recycle 100%, it will get vey much worse..
