Mud and Mirrors Make Interactive Eco-Art in Morocco

Designed as part of the Marrakech Biennale earlier this year, the earthy installation features pillars of mud and straw organized into a spiral design that is then fronted with mirrors that reflect the exhibit itself and the surroundings.

Now based in Berlin, Elín Hansdóttir explains that her site-specific art installations are designed to immerse viewers into the built landscape, which she alters for a sensory treat.

For the Marrakech Biennale, she worked with eight local craftsmen to build a spiraling monument of earth, water and straw that teases light and anyone who is lucky enough to enjoy it.

Located in Tassoultante, this maze-like structure is especially fun for the neighborhood children who run around and admire their many reflections in the staggered mirrors.

We’re big fans of eco-art that reinforces the relationship between us and nature, but Elín’s contribution to the genre is hands-down one of the most interesting we’ve seen in a long while.

  1. That’s pretty awesome! Very interesting! This could probably become the children’s playground in that neighborhood. Eco-art just amazes me!
