Reuven Fields Brings Israeli Scrapiness to his Scrap Metal Sculptures

From small-scale butterflies to large horses, Reuven Fields’ scrap metal sculptures breathe life into discarded pieces.

It takes a lot of energy to mine metals from the earth, and significantly less energy to recycle metals into something new.  But if you can upcycle used metal scraps into something else (such as an upcycled aluminum can chair) without it undergoing a significant process?  That’s ideal.  And industrious.  The concept has not evaded Reuven Fields, an Israeli artist currently living and working in North Carolina in the United States whose front lawn and studio are filled with sculptures fashioned out of scrap metal.

Born and raised on Kibbutz Hazorea in Israel, Fields moved to the US about ten years ago to seek out greater opportunities for his metal art.  He studied metal design at Wizo Canada in Haifa, but soon became interested in performance art and using his sculptures in combination with music.

The video clip above, Cycles of Life, shows one such performance piece with his upcycled metal scrap art being combined with flowing water and music.  “My interest has always been more kinetic,” Fields says.  “I’m still a performance artist at heart.

Since moving to North Carolina, Fields has been active in the community and created many residential, commercial and public pieces.  He often participates in local art festivals and competitions as well.

Fields welcomes visitors to his studio, where works every day (except on days when he’s at the local scrap yard collecting materials).
