The municipality in Abu Dhabi is sponsoring 500 solar-paneled recycling containers.
A whole host of constructive ideas are being generated in the UAE’s capital, Abu Dhabi. A pair of cousins on segways educate visitors to the Corniche about waste management, and the municipality’s turn-it-off campaign encourages moderate energy and water use. The most recent plan, timely following our post yesterday about the need for recycling facilities, involves distributing 500 solar-powered recycling containers throughout the city. The goal is to encourage a world-class conservation culture everyone will want to visit.
Khalifa Mohammed Al Mazroui; the General Manager of the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City expressed the following philosophy to Khaleej Times:
Sponsoring this national project by the Municipality comes in the context of its strategy to achieve and improve sustainable development with the aim of maintaining the community health and safety, boosting the culture of sustainability, engaging the community towards such concepts and adopting them as daily routines, and encouraging individuals to transform this practice into a genuine culture.
In so doing, Abu Dhabi hopes to distribute responsibility for environmental conservation among constituents as well as the government. But in order to do that successfully, the facilities need to be available. It is not helpful to preach the need for recycling if it is not convenient to do so.
A patented, 100% Emirati concept, the 500 containers are being distributed by Visual Media supported by the Khalifa fund. The containers will allow users to separate their organic, glazed and paper waste at the source.
Solar panels will collect energy throughout the day that will then be converted to electricity at night to light up the containers. Like the Corniche segways, such displays of technological might demonstrate possibility.
Within the next year, the containers will be placed along the Abu Dhabi corniche, and in the Family, Formal, and Central Parks.
All of the ADM initiatives described fall under the capital’s 2030 urban evolution plan to create an attractive, sustainable, and world-class cosmopolitan city.
