Although beeswax is a better choice than burning parrafin, you want to be careful because it can still be contaminated with a lot of chemicals. Olive oil is super healthy in it’s natural state, but not so much when it’s heated. My pick for healthiest candle is Orb Shabbat Candles, made from Organic Manuka Beeswax which is the purest and most natural of all waxes. They’re non-toxic and non-allergenic, and they smell incredible.. naturally!

i was excited about this because i thought i’d be able to find a good beeswax source for the middle east. one of the sites doesn’t ship international and on the other, international orders can’t be placed online. i want to make my own candles but for now when i can get beeswax i use it only for lotions and salves.

tamar, thanks for the information about the olive oil candles.

so, anyone know where to get good beeswax in the middle east? bars, sheets, or pellets? and, does anyone know what to do with honey in the comb? can i get beeswax from that? thanks!

There are special glass cups which are made for using olive oil for Shabbat candles. I think this family time sounds wonderful though. Maybe you can make candles for memorials and Yom Tov so they will be special.

You mention olive oil in your article.According to Jewish tradition,olive oil is the purest and best medium to use for the Shabbat lights because they shed a stable, beautiful light with a pleasant scent.They are also kinder to your candlesticks :)Take a small shnapps glass or a special glass candleholder, fill 2/3 with water and then pour in a layer of olive oil and add a floating wick. Simple and environmentally sound.
