Millions of grey fox, sable or rabbits? So if only 2000 die it's ok? I thought the grey fox was on the endangered species list! All 3 animals are considered treif and an abomination to eat according to our laws of Kashrut. So they can not be considered kosher by any stretch of the imagination…and yet it's ok to kill them to put a decorative trim on a hat or is it the whole hat that is made of their fur? I have seen both. Do you know how these animals are raised and killed? Skinned alive so that the pelt isn't ruined! Not exactly what is done by a shochet when he kills animals we are permitted to eat. I think this is the height of hipocracy!

Tradition is something that should be respected. As it stands, I don't think an awful lot of people can afford to buy the schtreimel, and wearers keep it for life, handing it down to those in younger generations. It's not the same as the pompous women around the world who expect blond (blood free) fur coats to wear for a few months before wanting a new one.

Why are the Ultra Orthodox not also against killing animals for their fur? Why is it ok to wear a hat trimmed in the fur of a grey fox, sable or rabbit? They are just as dead! Use fake fur!
