Reuse It or Lose It: Green Your Baby

In honor of international Earth Day, which is on April 22nd, we’ll be devoting a series of posts this week to Israeli ventures and businesses that make our consumption a little greener by reinventing used materials.

If we don’t reuse our resources we may lose them altogether, so these green heroes definitely deserve our attention and support.

Baby toys and clothes, though irresistibly adorable, have the potential for environmental disaster.

They’re used for a short period of time due to the rapid development of babies, many baby toys are made out of plastic or other non-biodegradable materials, and unless a family is planning on having another child then many perfectly good baby items get tossed out.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was somewhere to buy used baby items and also sell your own used baby stuff?  Luckily, somebody thought of that already.

Sharon and Dalit in Tel Aviv’s Florentin neighborhood offer a wide selection of clothing, toys, furniture, maternity clothes, pregnancy books, and strollers, most of which can be viewed on their website.  The store is a treasure trove both for new parents trying to save some money and older parents looking to sell their used baby items.

Baby2Baby, a similar store located in central Tel Aviv, offers the same services and has a very comprehensive website.  Added bonus: they sell trampolines and rocking chairs.

Shablul, in Modi’in Elit, also offers a large selection of second hand baby items.

So the next time you’re thinking of buying a little something for a little baby, think of buying it used.  Not only will you be doing something good for the planet, but you can take those extra cash savings and invest them in the baby’s future or education – I’m sure he or she will thank you for it.
