Salt water has been known to be a wonderful remedy for irritated nasal passages, especially in the viral cold and flu season, and for allergy sufferers. Its rich mineral mix reduces the inflammation in the vessels, reducing congestion as well as viral load, and can reduce the chance of developing sinus infections that result when viruses lag. The recent results of a study published in an American medical journal, The Archives of Otolaryngology: Head and Neck Surgery, support this well-known folk remedy. The basic recipe I like is 250 ml boiled water + 2 tsps sea salt (I like Gros Sel de Guerande, a coarse natural sea salt found in many food and health food stores in TelAviv (including Feldman on Balay Melacha and Noi Motzrei Teva on King George). Fill a 1-10 cc dropper with the warm solution (not too hot) and while tipping head back slightly over the sink, instill into nostril. Repeat in other nostril. Repeat 3 times a day. Use smaller dropper for smaller people. In small kids and babies you can pull mucus out using a bulb syringe after instilling the saline. It feels intense and works amazingly well, and you can continue to use it as a preventative when you recover!
