Israel touts some of the world’s best solar technology advances (see our extensive solar energy company guide here), but its Middle East neighbor Dubai, says it is planning to set up the region’s largest solar energy manufacturing plant. They are expected to start producing by the last quarter in 2010, and will manufacture photovoltaic panels that can generate 130 megawatts of power annually.

The building plans call for a 1 million square foot plant, with solar panels to be produced as big as 5.7sqm. Similar plants will be built in China, Mexico and Bulgaria. The announcement was made during this week’s Green Dubai World Forum 2008.

According to the Khaleej Times, it will be the Middle East’s largest solar panel plant, and it will be located in Dubai’s Technopark. The intent to build the solar plant came with the announcement that that UAE intends to adopt green building legislation, the first of its kind in the world. Dubai hopes to become a sustainable building pioneer, and has started incorporating green building practices into new projects since the beginning of 2008.

Dilip Rahulan, the CEO of Solar Technologies said: “The energy from sunlight striking the Earth for 40 minutes is equivalent to the global energy consumption for a whole year. The mission of Solar Technologies is to accelerate the adoption of solar photo-voltaic by rapidly expanding manufacturing capacity and significantly reducing the cost of solar modules through innovations and manufacturing excellence.

“We intend to become one of the largest solar photo-voltaic module manufacturing units in the world over a period of time.”

    When a country have the chance to be 10 months plain of solar, why not to build the economy to solar energy;

  2. Dubai must make the difference…

  3. I'ts not surprising that solar panels in the Middle East are proliferate, because the weather there is hot. It's residents should start adopting this trend in order to save energy while taking advantage of their weather's condition.

Good to see solar panels being actively used.

  6. Thank you and it is great info. I have visited Dubai before and it is a great place to build the solar plant there.

    To whom it might concern

Hello my name is Sam Hui, I work for a trading company in Hong Kong and we have recently started a factory producing solar products and solar panels. We are currently looking for different companies to cooperate with us and I was wondering if you would be interested in having a look at our products, as we are getting the product firsthand we can offer great prices for all kind of different solar power products.

    Thank you.

Look forward to hear from you

    Kind regards
    Sam Hui

  8. It is amazing how something like Solar Panels (which will be the norm in a few years) is still so expensive to build.

Not many people know that for houses.. its not that expensive to build your own solar panels.. i have and my friends/family have too, we saved thousands!

But nice to see big companies finally going this route!

Solar power especially in the Middle East proves that the next generation electrical networks will be powered by the sun. The huge desert areas could be the next gold mines of the century. Well done for Dubai!

  10. wow. 1 million sq feet! that region is really gearing up for solar. countries like saudi are also flexing their muscles with some massive investments. let’s face it, with their finance and climate they can’t go wrong

Hi, I was looking around for a while searching for best practices technology and I happened upon this site and your post regarding echnologies FZE Plans To Build Middle East’s Largest Solar Panel Plant in Dubai | Green Prophet, I will definitely this to my best practices technology bookmarks!

It doesn’t surprise me that they would be doing this in Dubai. The city has really taken over as far as innovative designs and thinking. Denver, where I work, is looking at building solar energy plants every few square miles. It won’t get rid of the natural energy consumption, but at least something.

  13. David says:

Do they get solar panels from China?
